The exception being if you know your rival is self-destructive. After Manzikert, the Seljuks released Emperor Romanos IV, and were likely pleasantly surprised to see the Romans spiral into a civil war which would forever open Anatolia to the Turks.
Hello. I'm from Argentina. As a teenager, I went to a school that had a very strong nationalist-catholic-hispanist ideology. As such, the reigns of the Reyes Catolicos, Charles V (or I ) and Philip II were a very important part of our histoy classes. Also, the "what would happened if only..." was a very usual position. Then i studied in a catholic university and these subjects were relatively relevant in the Modern History curriculum. But i dont remember ever hearing about this abandonment of the "burgundian" strategy by Charles as a posible reason for the failure of his proyect. I've been listening your streams for some weeks and i found them very informative. Congratulations for your work
Despite being an Anglican, I actually wish mainland Europe had been United on a Christian empire. Europe had always torn itself apart rather then being conquered. The US didn’t conquer Europe, it collected the scraps of what was left after the war.
It's definitely frustrating that the overwhelming majority of historical content on UA-cam is just summaries of broad events, the niche of detailed longform content absolutely needs more attention
@@austin-9132honestly though, the condensing of history really serves a purpose too... think just how many young boys must become fascinated with history from something like "Kings and Generals". The historical fiction novel Ascanio by Alexander Dumas shows Francis I making a similar mistake when Charles traveled through French territory. Francis made Charles promise that Francis would receive Milan but didn't even ask Charles to put anything in writing because he believed his word was enough. In Ascanio, Francis is portrayed as the idealist obsessed with chivalry while Charles is the more machievelian one.
Are there any books or further reading about this topic? It’s incredible how Charles V has the opportunity to checkmate most of his enemies and he never noticed it.
Charles V made some sort of treaty with the Duke of Lorraine in the 1540s but some years back I tried to find information about the treaty online and could hardly find anything in English.
So he should have acted like the emperor Sigismund at the Council of Constance(early 1400's) that gave czech reformer Jan Hus safe conduct to the council but then reneged and had him burnt at the stake!? Church had to be reformed otherwise Europe would have gone into a steep decline.
Wouldn't Ferdinand still have been chosen as king of the romans instead of Charles' son? Even if Charles achieved his strategy, Ferdinand is still more popular with the princes of the empire.

You say charlemagne made a mistake dividing his territory but in truth dividing Austria from Spain saved Austria from spains disastrous policies against England and France

I'll be honest, your solo and scripted episodes are by far the best to me.
The main lesson here is that if you capture your main rival in battle, don't let him go.
Put him in a cage and carry him into battle a la Timurlane
Wrong. If you kill your enemies, they win.
By that point french nobility could have continued the war without him.

I appreciate how you dont dumb down the events for the masses and talk in detail for people interested and already familiar with the material

No, the quote is "German to the horses". He didn't speak English. I mean, why do you think Charles V would speak English?
@@felixheavier5478 His aunt was married to the English king (Katherine of Aragon) and his son Phillip married the English queen (Mary Tudor)
Yes I'm pretty sure English is not a part of the real quote

He traded Burgundy for the New World. An excellent trade, because Burgundy devoured every dynasty who tried to reign it.
