If it had not been for Henry VII greed, Catherine could’ve returned to Castile and contracted a new and better match. He could’ve returned her dowry, but he was such a miser, so he didn’t. The negotiating between Henry and Catherine’s father did her no good, as her mother died early, and as then quite low in the list for the succession to the Castilian throne (because her sister Juana was then queen regnant of Castile) made her a poorer possible bride on the royal marriage market as ‘only a princess of Aragon’.

By the time Catherine married Arthur, she was even lower on the succession for Castile as her sister Joanna already had 3 children, she would have 3 more by the time her husband passed. Plus Spain was going to become unified and Joanna or her oldest son, Charles would be its ruler.

@@janefelix3821 Spain as we know it today was only officially united under the the time of the Bourbons. It was only dynastically united at the time of Isabel and Ferdinand and were only continued by their heirs (Joanna, Charles, Philip II, etc...). When Isabel died Ferdinand had little authority over the Castilian court since he's an Aragonese. Catherine can still perform her duties in Aragon while Joanna can continue hers in Castile

Fernando was a miser no less. Looking at Catherine’s household expenses before she married Henry - they were in dire straights. She couldn’t afford clothes - kept ordering fabric to add to the bottom of the skirts, and when it would wear out, she’d have to tear it off and sew on another piece of fabric. She was selling her plate, her jewelry, anything of value to feed her small staff and herself.
Mom and Dad and later Dad never sent a coin with an ambassador.
I have researched a lot, I was wondering whether there were any legal issues for the parents to help their daughter. But there didn’t seem to be anything that would prevent them to send her some money for her household needs.
Until Isabella passed away, she and Catherine corresponded consistently. And she shared with her mother her difficult situation. They sometimes indeed couldn’t afford firewood and food.
For Henry (the VII) I see since the marriage wasn’t consummated - legally she wasn’t his family. And it was so strange that he considered marriage with her, then this long drawn negotiation of marriage with Prince Henry. So, say, she was the guest of the Crown - England also never provided financial support to Catherine these years between the death of Arthur and marriage to Henry. But we say Henry VII was a miser, he was greedy.
I cannot understand zero help by her own parents, being fully aware of her difficult circumstances.
And she did ask her father in one of the letters, and in his answer he diverted her to demand support from Henry VII. Mystery!

After Arthur died-it would have been best for all parties if Catherine of Aragon had gone back to Spain.

Certainly, she would have been much happier

@@lonelyqueenofhearts7030 Not necessarily I shall say, since at the time marry Henry really was the best option, none could’ve predict future, that Catherine would somehow unable to have sons(at least none out of infancy) and that Henry turned to such a jerk to his wife and daughter.
Like seriously at the time Henry was still so young, it wouldn’t be fair to judge him back then based what we know already. People changes throughout years and I dare say that at the beginning they were genuinely happy and genuinely love one another.

This is a classic example of prudent decision making by all side...guess...what....England being allied to Spain would have made England...Spain and Portugal exploring sea togather....lots of wars would have been avoided....all the piracy by England on Portuguese and Spanish ships would have been avoided

Exactly! but England's claim to the throne at that moment is kinda weak which was Henry VII's focus. He who descended from the York wants a union with a Lancaster descent so the Plantagenets will find it difficult to claim the throne back. Catherine was just a pawn in the end.

@@QWERTYUIOP-wu6ht It was Henry's claim to the throne that was weak, not England's claim. Henry claimed the throne of England was his by right as a descendent of Edward III but the rights of his wife, Elizabeth, far outweighed his own. While both Elizabeth and Henry can trace their history as far bad as Edward III, it's the fact that Elizabeth's claim is patrilineal and thus stronger than Henry's which is matrilineal and considered weaker. I do think that it sucks that in the end, Ferdinand never delivered on his word and left his daughter to rot in a foreign country while he tried to take the crown of another.
