The chess24 Legends of Chess is the 4th stage of the $1 million Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour and features Magnus Carlsen and his predecessors as World Champion Vishy Anand and Vladimir Kramnik. It consists of two stages, a 10-player preliminary, where each player plays each other once, followed by a knockout among the top 4. Prelim ties are played as 4-game rapid matches, while knockout ties are the best of 3 such matches. The prize fund is $150,000, with $45,000 for first place, while the winner also qualifies for the $300,000 Grand Final.
The time control is 15 minutes for all moves with a 10-second increment from move 1. The winner of a preliminary tie decided in rapid games gets 3 points. If the score is 2:2 an Armageddon game is played, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4 but a draw counts as a win for Black. A winner in Armageddon gets 2 match points, while the loser gets 1. The knockout format is the same except before Armageddon there are two 5+3 blitz games. No draw offers are allowed before move 40. Official website: chess24.com/tour

Ivanchuk has been my favorite player for a very long time now. I've always said that when he brings his A game, no one can beat him. The best they can hope for is to draw without too much embarrassment, the worst is he plays like a chess engine and dismantles you like a children's rod puzzle. I also think he's the most exciting player because you truly never know which Ivanchuk you're going to get, so you can't really prepare too well.
He is a legend of chess for sure. IMO, he often looks like he isn’t interested or doesn’t care which makes him even more dangerous as an opponent.

Hello agadmator I want to say thank you for putting out these videos they’ve helped me improve my chess a lot. I’m 13 years old and have been playing chess since I was ten but at the start of the year I started to get more serious about my chess playing at least one or more games a day online and watching videos and in January I was rated 600 and yesterday I finally got to 1200 and beat an IM in a simul (though he was playing 19 other people and blundered in time trouble.) Will be telling my grandchildren about this one moment of wit and bravery during the pandemic when I found a winning move Magnus missed and almost knocked my screen over.
Incredible! Magnus is still the Thanos of Endgames but this time he got Chuckied by Chucky. Thrilling game. It's like an mma fight where two champions are knocking each other down until one gives up at the end. It's amazing how many intuitive moves got ignored in this game but the technical ones are rarely forgotten.

He has been playing so well. Perhaps some humility will be good for him.
@@Chesscat2022 Magnus is fairly humble with others. However, he is always disgusted with himself when he doesn't play well. He personally wants to play better and doesn't like losing like a good champion before him.

Chucky and Moro are two of my fave players. They are a bit inconsistent, yes, but when they play well, you can always say that they deserve a brilliancy award for the way they surprisingly crush their opponent.
I've been obsessing over the last phase of this match all night and morning. I'm not a master and I could be wrong, but not playing white rook to F8 does not look like a blunder. Black king to H7 strongly defends against that attack. In every scenario I played there if Magnus continued the attack I could not find a combo where he wouldn't loose the rook and possibly trade queens with no checkmate. The only winning attack I could see with the time left is rook to F7 and queen to anywhere on row 7 to its left. It feels like such an obvious play that I am suspicious there was a black move that I do not see yet. The only mistake I saw at the end was leaving D7 undefended. I'm not sure if he didn't see it or gambled for the win since they were getting low on time.
Either way it was a very beautiful game. Thank you for the channel and commentary.
I don't completly understand what you're saying after your Rf8-Kh7 Idea but after that White can simply play Rf7, pinning the Queen to the King with the Rook
I'm also a bit confused... in the case Rf7 is played, cant black just play Re4 to eyeing the white queen, forcing Qd7, going into a draw?
And if Rf8 is played it is pretty much the same, black will lose the queen, but white cannot checkmate. Used an engine to double check, and sees it as a draw. Maybe magnus thought he had a winning chance and already saw that the Rf7/8 line was a draw?
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I'VE SPOTTED THE WINNING MOVE in an agadmator video lol. small joys
Tal, Ivanchuk and at last Mr.Barnes joins my top tier! They never fail to entertain us🤩

I've never seen kasparov get his ass so thoroughly kicked until he played ivanchuk. The best part of that victory was that he kicked kasparov's ass so badly that kasparov didn't even have time to be an asshole.
It was as if kasparov was so stunned that he just accepted defeat. Instead of Shitting on his opponent for playing better than himself haha.

I love that Tal quote. Valuable lesson for many situations.
This endgame was hilarious. I thought magnus was going to win and i didn't believe he missed the Rf8 move
I will go for magnus if he's not against Ivanchuck. Because every time Magnus faces Ivanchuk, Ivanchuk is pulling out the child of Magnus out.
Rf8 wasn't the move, you can trade queen with rook, yes it's winning in material but white won't be able to checkmate with just queen alone, besides black still have 3 strong pawns and a rook! Rf7 is probably the checkmate move, although a bit long and tricky (I think there's one alternative move to prevent checkmate if white plays Rf7, which I haven't calculated lol)...

I never thought I'd live long enough to see them battle again
I couldn't help but crack up when you said Ivanchuk was "every World Champion's worst nightmare."
when these two play they do a "dance of the engines" as well.
Exactly my thought. If you can't think of a move that improves your position, then just make a move that doesn't make it worse. Engines have the same problem.
@@cinegraphicsChess engines have no problem finding the best move.✅
@@gazmendrahmani1846 yes they do, when situation becomes complicated and there are too many moves to consider. They can't test all the possible moves, so they test only those that seem best based on heuristics (which may include AI, or machine learning to recognize certain patterns, but it's still guessing). Guessing is never 100% accurate so it's always possible that some of those they rejected actually lead to victory in less time (or prolong the loss, in case all moves lead to loss).
Always exciting to hear agadmator saying “It’s as of this move that we have a completely new game...”.
Magnus was so shocked afterwards, but these things can happen towards the end of a rapid game
This was a very suspenseful game. First Magnus was winning. Then Magnus blunders. Then Magnus is winning again. Then he blunders again. Now Ivanchuk is winning.
That first "hello everyone" has just the right energy
Great game. I've read many comments of Magnus missing the "obvious" move. But, let us recall two things: 1- OTB is very different than on analysis and 2- Probably he was in midst of a time trouble scramble. The thing is, rapid games such as this can be very dangerous when the major pieces are on the board, because there are mating threats all over the place. Probably Magnus didn't went all in with the rook on f8 because he was concerned with a possible counter attack of Chucky with the Queen and the Rook. Of course, such counter-attack was impossible, because the Queen on e8 was covering d7. There are many factors for these oversights, in particular, in blitz, you are reacting, and there is no time for analysis. Once Magnus missed Rf8!, I think it's not at all surprising that he missed it again, because he just wasn't even considering such move in the first place.
Thanks to Antonio for the analysis. A great game, Chucky is always a great fighter. We should call him: "Vasyl, the Giant Slayer".
Chuky usually looks very confident such that even when he makes a blunder he looks like he just pulled a crushing move. That's probably why Magnus was confused and didn't find the winning move.
It is an online tournament dude, might be true anyway though
Wow! utter brilliance by Ivanchuk.
Your analysis of the games is superb! You replay the games with the insight and speed of a titled player. It's fascinating!
How simple are you? All Agadmator does is have stockfish analyze whatever game he feels like uploading to UA-cam and then he just takes on the human persona of Stockfish and rambles about the game. Listen to how he talks. He constantly mixes up which side is to move and doesn't even know what a good move is unless the engine suggested it to him. How he got so many subs to his channel is beyond me. He's not even IM level. I watched a game where he played against one of Magnus's friends and Magnus moved the pieces while his student told him what to move. Magnus's student destroyed Agadmator so simply it wasn't even worth watching the game. I've played Antonio on Lichess a few times and he knows simple openings but that's it. No middle game strats whatsoever and his endgame is terrible because he doesn't know how to play the middle game. That's cool though you can be a fanboy if you like I won't judge
Ivanchuck is basically the Hatsumi Sen of the chess world (if you enjoy Kengan Ashura you know what I'm talking about). I Love that guy! You don't see people like that very often...
Heard the words Magnus resigned the game after quite a while...most of the time Magnus either wins or draws🤘🤘🤘 congrats ivanchuk
Vassily may not have been a world champion ever but he definitely created a new level of his own which that new level is comparable with world championship , maybe Keres , Korchnoi and Rubinshtein can be considered for the same title after him ...

Everyone makes mistakes when there is time pressure . But the great players hardly do that. Such was the case with Magnus . We should not forget that he did not lose any match up till this point in the tournament.

I feel really proud of myself. I found a checkmate sequence that Magnus missed
@Matuscara Just because you're too stupid to find a tactic doesn't mean the rest of us are. Chill out and let people be
Man I was sad after every game I missed a mate in 5 in and just today I spotted one against a 2200 on lichess. Can't tell you how pumped I got. Also relaxing to see the world champion miss a mate in 2, reminds you that they're human too.
Time pressure I guess
I thought this was an April's fool joke with that ending... how did he miss that mating pattern TWICE, and then allow Qd7 -facepalm-
Because it’s Ivanchuk!!
Low on time. Also at the GM level you trust your opponent's skill to not let obvious mates. So you dismiss them.
@@MegaAgamon That's just a dumb excuse. They know really well that everyone can blunder. Everyone makes mistakes, this time it was Magnus.
I was a little stunned like I was entering some alternative reality. The champ shoudnt miss such tactics especially twice, he is human after all, still a great champ.
@@nirolf12 9/10 times a GM "blunders" is a trap to lure the opponent in. When you are low on time like those gentlemen you rarely have time to proper analyse the game. So they often disregard obvious mates because they think that those are traps.

Ivanchuk had a winning position several times and later Carlsen was also able to win.
That is the central trick of these fast games. The one who best played under the pressure of the final seconds won. Congratulations to the great Vasily Ivanchuck.
When Ivanchuk plays world champions, its as if he is the world champion, even his photo looks like a nerdy version of Putin lol.
You posted these game preview just within 5 minutes the actual game finished !! You incredible agad🤘
Only If Ivanchuk Could 've Played With The Magician..
It Would've Been Awesome.
who, Morphy?
@@ecartmen1997 Mikhail Tal.
What a beautil game! How come I've never come across it? Thanks Agad. Didn't even bother me that I watched it on Friday eve two years ish after the release :)
So happy to see Chuky back on this channel!!!
At 16:03 After queen b2 Check king h3 is loosing the Game, because the rook can just capture on h4. The King has to capture the rook and Then queen h2 is checkmate. So After Queen b2 Check the rook would have to Go back to f2
Correct me if i Missed something
Magnus didn't miss the move if you look he could have sacrificed his rook and the king had to take it and he could chase him witht the Queen resulting in a draw.. Smart move by magnus. See if you can find it yourself...
Everyone talking about greatness of ivanchuk or Magnus and this game but agadmators consistency is the greatest
16:53 Rook f8 doesn't work as King h7..
If Kh7, then simply Rh7 and you lose the queen. 🤷🏻♂️
First time ever I guessed both black and white winning ideas even without pausing the video. Wondering what was the time situation, missed this game online, jumped into match only in Armageddon. Also this quote of Tall is very good for this game!
Thx Agadmator for your work and for correct pronunciation of "Ivanchuk" and "Alekhine", u only 1 in chess!
Black queen on g7: see everyone , I am protecting the king
Black rook on c4: hahahaha queen , you are just protecting the queen , see me , I am attacking white pawns and I will finish the game
Me: stop this !!!!! You all are doing great things , you both are equal , stop this , it is chess , not fighting club , stop fighting both of you.......rook and queen !!!!!!!!!!!! Funny ????? Isn’t it ????????????
4:04: agad: Hey Magnus, why didn't you push d5?
Magnus: That's because if I push that, I will get checkmated in 90 moves.
