Dude you gotta see Ivanchuk vs Shirov. Or Ivanchuk vs Kasparov where he basically taunted Kasparov with his knight. It’s not like one or two games decide a persons playing style, but if there are some games that get me weirdly inspired to try something insane, it’s got to be a Chucky.

It is easier to draw a game than to win and therefore to choose to play black in an armageddon game is an obvious choice to make for most players. I'm guessing MC won the toss. The style of play for black is anti-positional, defensive end welcoming to exchanges and repeating moves. I'm not sure a 1 minute advantage fairly compensates the white player, but then what other options are there?..

09:52 for white it was better to move queen from f2 to e1 attacking knight in e4 protecting knight in c3

Then after black traded the knight, he definitely wins an extra f5 rook or else gets a free knight and mess the white king position up, i think.

I think that if Ivanchuk had kept his queen on the sixth rank it would have maintained the pin of Carlsen's knight against his queen. Ivanchuk could even grab the a-pawn to create a passed pawn threat. By moving the queen off the sixth rank he removed the only significant compression of Black's position.

Ne7 Qe8, Nxc7 axb5 the Knight on c8 is trapped and if either Nxb6 or Nxd6 for a Desperado move just c takes. It's 2 knights for a pawn and a rook. The c pawn is also pinned to the Queen and black gets the semi-open a file while directly attacking the a pawn.

what kind of player is Ivanchuk to give chills down the spines of champions?
I mean, you review all the games of every player possible, every ivanchuk game, and yet when you face him it will always be a New Game.
He must be the player who contributed most to New Games.
    "Oh you know this line?"

Whatever happened to bidding for time?
White gets five minutes and each player tells the arbiter how much time they'd accept to play black with draw odds. Lowest time gets the black pieces and if both players make the same bid then you choose randomly.

I noticed with Chucky both in Game 3 and in Armageddon that his clock management was reckless. In Game 3 he was over a minute ahead of Carlsen (around 1.30 to 30 seconds) and took an eternity over his next move. Again, towards the end in Armageddon he took too long to make decisions.

Armageddon definitely feels heavily favourable to Black, so it pretty much *is* decided by the initial coin toss
at that high of a level, honestly these people could force a draw in their sleep if they wanted it from the start(there's a reason draws are so incredibly common). the 1 minute difference isn't enough by a long shot to make the difference, especially when white is forced to play so aggressively and hope for the best that some plan works out
just going into shorter and shorter time formats until someone comes out on top would be enough honestly
