Mrs Tanner is wrong on one issue: namely she is not uneducated. I would argue that she is wonderfully self-educated on this important subject.

    • @Lillith1941
      @Lillith1941 10 років тому +1

As she "educated" herself with the help of whomever, whatever inspired her, she at first claimed that writings of Spaulding or E. Smith was what Joseph Smith (who predicted his name would be well-known for good and for evil) plagiarized .
Now on her site she realizes just as I had noticed, if he plagiarized anything it was the Bible.
If she convinces Mormons to doubt what has that gained for Christ? More atheists since many of the young that leave Mormonism become atheists. The Jehovah witnesses have noted this and pointed it out. In a secularizing world, Sandra Tanner has helped some Christ followers to choose the wisdom of the common culture.

The uneducated one is the interviewer. Any one who can interview hundreds of people who have had good reason to leave the Mormon Church and have shown them to be a fraud, and this person (the interviewer, John Dehlin) remains a Mormon points to someone who has a problem with truth and reason.

She did struggle to understand the burden of proof at 24:48. (I suspect she actually understands it just fine, but had to go outside of that understanding when defending her faith, as always inevitably happens).

@@Lillith1941 I totally disagree. The "Jesus" whom Mormons believe in (that He is a brother to Lucifer); had an earthly father, etc. etc. has NOTHING to do with the Jesus Christ of Christianity and the New Testament. My only problem with the LDS Church is their blasphemous use of the name of Jesus Christ! "After all you can do...." totally blasphemes the fact that Christ shed His blood for our transgressions. He paid the FULL price...for the redemption of many. Mormons believe that they will be exalted to "god level" through WORKS... and this is also blasphemous.

I ran into a copy of Changing World of Mormonism in the basement of a friend in 1997, then called Sandra in tears and went to the ULM. She really helped guide me out of Mormonism in the days when I was just beside myself. I can’t fathom how many people would be in mental and emotional bondage without the Tanner’s work. So grateful.

Praise be to God for giving many the strength to not be deceived or fall into the Deceiver's snares. Praise God for relating to all of us and giving liberally and upbraiding not. For warning us of the complacency of the proud people of His time. Praise God for having a mansion prepared for each of his children, each one who recognizes Christ and the Spirit he placed in their hearts at birth-they who find joy and lightness in their hearts at the mere mention of the name of the Son. Praise God for giving a place for those who would follow Him and leave others to worship how, when or what they may.
Praise God who will claim His own and works His wonders as the Kingdoms of Lightness and Darkness spread further and further apart in preparation for His second coming.Praise god who called the humble and the meek and wasn't too thrilled with the proud Pharisees.
But we all know the story and how it began and how it ends...

I lived in Salt Lake City, Utah for 14 years as a non-Mormon and I understand what she says about Mormons staying with it to stay part of their group, and primarily for social and family reasons. Their intent on converting others is particularly distressing. It is like their ability to gain new Mormons is a sign of their truth. But, it is simply to keep them busy so they will not question anything.

Apologies John, I asked you in the previous video to ask Sandra about her apparent hypocrisy regarding her Christian faith but you did it here...and you really pressed her on it and that's really commendable. Well, I am an active Mormon and love truth. There are many issues I can't understand, most troubling is Joseph and polygamy.
I still have a strong feeling that the church is the most true on earth, but I tend to believe that Joseph is a fallen prophet. I don't know, though. I am just trying to live the best way I can, I will read the scriptures, and love the truth in the Book of Mormon. I find it extremely uplifting and it brings me closer to my God.
I will try to improve and love God and my neighbor. For the rest I am very interested in getting answers concerning Joseph in the life hereafter.
Anyway I enjoyed your comment. All the best for you!

At 28:00 where Sandra talks about the After Death Communication when Jerald appeared to her, this is not uncommon. What is sad is that she continues to say that this experience is "not in my theology". If she would open her mind to it, this happens often to many people of different faiths, and even those of no religious beliefs at all. Many Near Death Experiencers have told wonderful stories of their experience of going into the Afterlife and what they learned there about that realm. I do appreciate her sharing that very personal and even sacred experience. Thank you, Sandra.

As I’ve mentioned before, I met her in the early 90s. I went to their bookstore. I met Gerald too, but just for a second. He was wearing a vest and was, if I remember right, getting something ready for a printing press.
Anyway, I bought several books from her that not only helped me leave the church, but a couple cousins, their spouses and children as well.
I was as deep into it as could be. I was also depressed because I am gay. And I brought that up. She pretty much agreed with the Mormon Church that it was contrary to God’s wishes. At the time it was devastating.
So I read her books which opened my eyes about Joseph Smith, Polygamy, The Book of Abraham, Book of Mormon, Mountain Meadows Massacre - pretty much everything touched on in this 4 part interview.
I left it and have never regretted it and never looked back.
But, I consider Fundamentalist Christianity as much a problem in the world today as Mormonism.
I reject the bible as authoritative in pretty much anything. I accept some of it is inspired, but much of it is nonsense.
I would no longer classify myself as Christian. Christianity is based on the atonement. A concept that to me, is entirely unnecessary.
I have come to believe Jesus was a Teacher/Prophet who survived the cross and fled to Kashmir and Tibet and continued teaching there. The true tomb of Christ is in India, a 1950 year old little green building.
There are dozens of documentaries on you tube about Christ’s training with Buddhists between the age of 12, when he disappeared from the bible story, and 33 when he reappeared in Palestine.
The evidence is there that he married, had a son and lived to old age. In Buddhism he is known as Saint Issa.
Anyway, I will never join any church again. But I am a firm believer in reincarnation. I believe Jesus was a trained Buddhist who, while being Jewish rejected the eye for an eye philosophy of that culture, and embraced and taught Buddhist principles such as do turn the other cheek and the Golden rule.
I believe Sandra replaced a belief in one form of cult for another. Fundamentalism, in any religion is bad.
In addition to the books I purchased from her, which helped me out of Mormonism, the National Best seller ‘Rescuing the Bible From Fundamentalism’ did more to help me out of the idea that if Mormonism is false that leaves Christianity for me to fall into.
IMO she is wrong about gays, gay marriage, the purpose of marriage being procreation, non Christians not making it to heaven if they don’t accept Christ…etc.
But I she is honest and open, and threw me a lifeline back then when I was drowning in the cult. And I will always appreciate that.

I thoroughly enjoyed this four part series on Mormonism. I discovered Sandra Tanner about a year ago, and while I did not grow up Mormon and am a Protestant, I have grown in my respect for her this last year. What a valuable individual in the body of Christ and in the Mormon church. I really love her refreshing candid honesty, and her desire to live her life as befits a born-again believer having come out of the cult of Mormonism. I didn’t always appreciate some of the questions, as they felt a little confrontative (?), but felt she did her level best to answer them as best she could. Thank you Sandra, for your service in in the Lord’s Kingdom. I look forward to the day with you when you‘re reunited with your beloved husband. Actually, both your earthly husband and best friend, as well as your heavenly husband and King.

Jesus has shown us that we need to be baptized (water and spirit), so where do you get your baptism from? Yes, there are things that are not understandable about the LDS church. Like Joseph and the women and other issues. I expect to understand these things later on.

@@mareike5600 This is such an important topic! T0 me what you say still sounds performance driven.
The New Testament balance between grace, faith (which to me implies repentance) and works is best expressed in these verses from Ephesians 2: 8For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9not by works, so that no one can boast. 10For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life.
So we are saved by grace thought faith - the pressure is off, our sin is removed (we are washed in the blood of the lamb in Revelation), Christ's righteousness is credited to our account, we don't need to meet any minimal behavioral standard, we are just declared clean!
But God has works for us to do and so we do them out of love and thanksgiving for him.
I'm trusting Christ's death on the cross ALONE for my salvation. It sounds like you are trusting His death to get started and then a bunch of church and performance related things ("we need to grow") to be good enough for salvation.
Ultimately, performance based justification runs into Jesus' words: Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
      Which no one can do.
Thanks for wishing me a beautiful day. I pray the same for you today.

one more thought. I think John was a little harder on her. I think it is for two reasons: one I think he is in general harder on Christians than non-Christians who come out of Mormonism and I also think he was trying to get an emotional response out of her...which he did. As far as homosexuals are concerned I think she is just a product of her age and time. (wow sounds like a Mormon Apologist lol). In the Mormon church we are taught to love the sinner and hate the sin.
When you become a Christian that changes because we are ALL sinners in the sight of God. None of us are deserving of His presence or even a second hand thought, however he came to earth took on a body and died for us. He never said only love certain people. He said to love ALL people. It is his job or responsibility to decide who is deserving of going to Heaven or to Hell. Not us.

Can we at least agree on the fact that visions don't occur? Whether or not we're talking about Joseph, or Mohammed, or Sandra Tanner...It can't be that one group or person is right while the rest are wrong, because even though you're 100% convinced your team is right, just remember that your conviction is equally matched by the proselytes of all the others that had "visions." Some of these people are charlatans, others are lunatics or suffering some level of hysteria, or a combination of some/all of these. To think otherwise is sheer arrogance and provincialism. Mrs. Tanner as sincere as I believe her to be is just using her God (i.e. belief system) to explain her lack of verifiable knowledge.
And by the way, calling someone anti-mormon is not akin to calling a black person a n*****-that was cringeworthy.

Joseph Sonners I think it is obvious that visions occur and have been scientifically verified that they do, but maybe not particular visions and do not necessarily show which is based on "reality" nor from whence they came. Remember even Joseph said he had visions that he thought were from God but later learned that they were false and from Satan. A lot of people are down on Black-and-White thinking but one must remember that we live in a binary world (quantum) at the lowest level. The question is at what level is Black and White thinking appropriate and which questions should one ask. One might be "Did God visit Joseph, if so how?" Maybe it is unanswerable, but at least it makes for valid inquiry.

What we accuse others of comes from running the facts or visual through our own persona. IOW we are as we judge.

Thank you for sharing the stories.
I went to many denominations after leaving the catholic church in my seeking the one true church. I even got a hold of a Book of Mormons after coming across the Mormon channel on cable television. Had two young men come to my house and they brought their bishop at one point. I discerned through praying that it was not the right path for me and I thanked them for their efforts to convert me. Any church that teaches they are the only true church is not teaching truth. Run!
Ask and you shall receive; seek and you shall find; knock and the door will be open. We are all on this journey of life. My perspective on all religions is that they serve a purpose in our seeking answers to life. I did not feel whole until I came across Louise Hay's message on accepting self unconditionally so that I can receive and give love. She was ministering to people with AIDS. We talk about Jesus dying on the cross for our sins, but we never mention who we are in Christ. We are one. We have the Holy Spirit to teach us all things. The comforter. Thus we have freedom! It is the freedom to seek and we discover that what we are searching for is within us. We must love ourselves (accept ourselves completely as we are) unconditionally. Then we will not judge anyone. As we overcome our fears, we mature into Christ. Perfect love casts out fear. No fear of what's ahead because we know we have God in us. We are never alone. Blessings.
