I worked on airhead BMWs at a Police workshop in Europe for three years, back when the /5 was the mount of choice. I have to say you have tackled this rebuild with gusto, doing many right things and a few dubious ones on account of not having a lift and the right tools. The BMW airheads are simple but in the simplicity is a lot of good engineering that requires finesse and knowledge. I became certified after a period working under some ace Beemer mechanics. (Not techs as they call them today).
You have done a great job and I hope the bike runs well for you. Kudos to your girl friend: none of mine would ride on a bike.

Thank for sharing Robert. The bike has truly never missed a beat on a ride, whether it be around town or across the state.

I just bought a barn find 83 R65. Everything the guy said was good on it, isn't. Tank rusted thru. Motor locked up. No power to anything with new battery installed. I'm realizing what I thought was a quick carb repair job is looking like a frame up resto. I just bought a motorcycle lift because I'm an old man and I can't bend over for very long. This week I'm going to start pulling it all apart. Wish me luck! Lol

I haven't torn into it much yet, but I'm worried the engine on the r90 I purchased might be soft seized, so I know the feeling. At least this way you'll go through the whole bike and know what you can count on! Thanks for the comment, good luck on the rebuild. Keep me posted!

With my Bmw R100 project which is 12 months in as i type this. , I removed the cylinder head and barrels & gearbox first to have less weight to lift out of the frame. nothing worse than back pain.but i am planning a full engine rebuild

At the time, I was really avoiding that. Heard horror stories about the head bolts stripping out and wanted to avoid that if I could, but smart idea.

Did I just watch you put the engine back into the bent frame ???

No, the bent frame was blue, the new frame is black.

could've just cut the frame in to pieces..

True. I figured I'd keep the frame in case I ever came by someone that could straighten for a deal.
