Thank you for the clear and concise explanation. I have three beautiful Avet reels and I can't wait to use them.

I've never used a scale to set my drag..Out here in San Diego I've set my drag by pulling line off the reel, it's not as precise as a scale maybe but I've never got spooled or had a big tuna or yellowtail break off do to my drag being too tight..just my 2¢

Instead of a scale, which I don't have, I slowly increased the drag until it could lift a gallon of water in a plastic jug.

I understand that you need to set your drag at 1/3 of the breaking strain. Buy why??? Why not set it at any old pressure?

01:25 "You want to set your drag to 1/3 the breaking strength of your line"..... this advice is often given but it is not a set in stone rule, just a recommendation. It also doesn't apply about as much as it does apply. A better recommendation is "your drag should not exceed 1/2 of the breaking strength of the smallest line on your reel". This would require you to set your drag at full. If using 30lb line you would set your FULL drag at anything under 15lbs. Different fish require different amounts of drag. For kings 10lbs is too much drag. Set it to 3-4lbs at strike which is around 6-8lbs at full. That puts you around 10% of line strength at STRIKE and around 20% at FULL. Anything less than 1/2 the breaking strength of line at full drag and you should be good....

So set your drag to full and adjust the knob from there? (Obviously when In free spool) Like don’t set your strike drag. Set your full drag, this way for instance, with 30 lb line and the lever all the way forward, the max drag is 15 lbs. you can’t go over, correct?
