Big congrats all around. Also, Senior is just the coolest guy. One hand in his pocket, a tool in the other, and things just come around. Great camera angles and editing. Really interesting to see how it comes together.
Senior must be an electrician. Electricians are taught to always keep one hand in their pockets or behind their back to avoid grounding themselves and getting shocked.
Boy, Howdy, Buddy, CON GRA TIU LA TIONS!! To me this was the most anticipated video of all UA-cam world. The little pony couldn´t sound happier, very, very happy Cat fan greets from Germany
Man, she sure sounds good. Nothing like that first pitter patter of the heart when she takes off. Excitement, anxiety, fear, accomplishment, etc. It all boils down to this. She's ready to be pieced together soon!
I would be content just having that engine available to roll out and start on special occasions. And every time I went out to the garage would qualify as a special occasion. Congrats on the successful rebuild.
WELL DONE SIR, its March 18th, so I am setting my reminder for the build, well done, you are constantly consistent and very well details and organized shop too, truly envious, well done
Using a rope to start a pony engine on a caterpillar diesel engine in the year 2022? Where did I miss the boat? Rebuilding that pony engine is far more expensive than buying an electric starter an retrofitting that old diesel engine, had to take an old man to get it going, age and treasury always overcome youth and skills, well done, please don't forget to paint it with the right yellow caterpillar color, remain me my younger years when I used to play with them. After all this congratulations to you guys you have done a superb job, excellent.
To hear the voice of a long silenced machine that had been rebuilt is the closest thing a mechanic does to having a newborn child cry the first time. I re-lived the anxiety of that first successful fire up of my D311 in my 212 grader that I'm sure you felt when it was still bleeding the air out of the system when it wouldn't quite start. Props to you and Senior, your both did a wonderful job on the mechanical restoration of that powerplant. #5J1113 will live another day to pull another plow!
It's great to see younger generations learn to appreciate the machines that help build this country and much of the industrial world. Good luck and bless all.
I think I am now plagued with a psychological issue Why Because I have watched this video 11 times now and every single time it brings a tear of joy to my eye I love it keep up the good work
A great day. I have good thoughts and fingers crossed. Squatch, that is probably the most beautiful diesel engine I've seen in many years. Thank you for bringing us along for the ride.
Best video I've seen all day! I love running an engine in for the first time since rebuild. Thanks to the Squatch Boys for sharing all of their hard work. I'm happy I found this channel and stuck with it.
SQUATCH!!! I kept my promise! On my way home from work I got my favorite beer and as soon as that diesel roared to life I cracked one open. I am so very proud of you and you wouldn’t even believe how I was yelling in excitement when it started and told all my kids to come in and see. What an incredible achievement and I aspire to be as great of a mechanic as you and your father are. I turn wrenches everyday and I still learn so much from you and your dad. I’m looking forward to many more videos from you gents. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!
Congrats, Squatch! Made my day again for sure. Don't think I ever followed anything on YT or on TV with this much interest and for so long. Truly great job!
Woo..Hoo!! The heart of the beast is alive!! Great job Squatch, It's so much fun to see your Dad take such an interest in the project too. This has been a great trip... I loved every minute of it.
I pulled hand cranks on D8 2U10,000, D8 36A and starter cord on log loader in WA State during the early 1970's! After that, pulled hand crank on a D8 1R in the Alaska Range...! Years later worked for NC Machinery in Anchorage and few knew how to start a pony motor Cat or where the "Thermoids" are located on the master clutch...! It was knuckle-breaking work, but satisfying -- I still miss the smell of unburned diesel on a cold day...! Robert Hammond
Ah, I've been waiting 3 years for this day :D. Not going to lie, the old anxiety was high watching this until she popped off. BEST 1113 EPISODE EVER!!! God, I need a drink now, and I was only watching. You must feel amazing now that that first (and second) start are under your belt. Congratulations so you and Sr, you've done some amazing work bringing this old lady back to life. You've earned a nice cold Mountain Dew sir!
100 proof Everclear Mountain Dew cocktail ? When I was temp stationed down at Coast Guard Airstation Mobile Alabama I got introduced to that one of my fellow Aviation Machinist Mate buds in the helo shop at a shrimp fry party his Dad thru to celebrate getting his shrimp trawler back in the water after a major rebuild. I thought I'd never survive the hangover from that one. So much fun while the party is ragin' but thank God we had the next day off from flight training duties with Cadet Aviation candidates. I couldn't have done a preflight or preflight inspection to save my soul. The shop CPO was in even worse in the hangover department I heard. They had a great crew down there summer of '78 and '79. I'd never heard of a place where you could buy beer by the gallon jug legally.
Perfection. That pony motor runs like a boss. Every detail over the last few months comes together for massive success. What a great moment! Congratulations! Job well done!
Old American Iron.. Love it! When I was younger had a friend who had a D2 on his ranch. That thing ran great and sipped fuel I ran it one time 8 hrs. straight and it only used like 5 gallon of fuel. Great Video!
Magnificent! After all that work, to have that pony motor start on the third pull has to be a great feeling. Another piece of history saved for another generation.
Wow, we are all excited! And hardly any adjustments. It is really amazing to put together several thousand parts so perfectly that all you need is a screwdriver to make the smallest adjustments and it runs like a top! That is attention to OCD detail for sure! Congratulations again!
Well done sir!! All that work has paid off nicely. Sure is easy making that pinion latch adjustment when it’s all out in the open like that. The only thing I was missing from this video was the smell 😎
A huge congratulations to squatch and squatch senior to all your efforts to bring the d2 back to life and it sounds totally awesome the pony motor and the diesel engine. It's so nice when you finally get to the start up day and all goes well. Minor adjustments are only natural. Keep up the great videos Toby 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Wow Toby!!! All the planning, the decisions, the many, many hours of work, the creation of new tools, your endless knowledge and experience, the eye for fine details, the Senior work, knowledge and magic, and you have yourself an engine that looks and sounds so great. This was like having Christmas in March for me. You have also created a legacy of knowledge to guide others going down the same road. Congratulations on your success and thank you for sharing your efforts and Senior with us.
Isn't it a delight when you start a completed refurbishment of a grand engineering marvel from all those years ago. Bet it smelled beautiful when you engaged the pony motor. This video sequence has bought back many memories of times using these tractors. Thankyou for saving it; and others!
As a 47 year mechanic for a Caterpillar Dealer, watching the detail and time you put in to this project was a delight! At each step I enjoyed your attention to the paper work you used and the time you took in doing so! Congratulations to this point, keep it up!!
What a beautiful moment! Like two surgeons operating, monitors initially showing a flat line, but after some precise wrench interventions, beep, beep, beeeeep and then all of a sudden the patient is brought back to life, alive and well, perfect heartbeat and all bodily functions a go. Fantastic work, congratulations to you both.
You justdon’t realize how big that engine is until you get a little perspective. I did like the senior magic fingers moment too. We old guys have that for some reason.
I am amazed at the artistic flow of a lot of the parts on these cats. Maybe it is the mechanical nature of some parts to need flowing curves but others seem to be put there for artistic value. Some people spent a lot of time at a drawing board and maybe a little art crept in there.
It sounds great. I am happy to be along for the ride on this one. Finally pulled the trigger on being a member. Look forward to seeing the project come together. Been following since the beginning. It has been a great project to watch. Thanks for letting us tag along.

That is totally awesome! Congratulations Squatch!!! She sounds so good!!! Hope we can get to see it at my plow day this year! Of course I know that’s a lot of work yet!!

My father was one of the biggest Caterpillar fans. When l see you go through all that work to start that little D2, now l know why my old man hooked up the old 8n Ford pto to the D2's pto shaft with overunning clutch and cranked the main diesel instead of using the pony motor. Those old Cats were truly engineering works of art but a pain to start. Congratulations great job on getting her running, good luck 💪
I'll bet people all over the world are lifting a beer to you while watching this episode! Pretty cool when you see the stack clean up and you know it is running on its own.
Nothing like it when the engine fires for the first time. I have not done any project this intense. Still a great deal of satisfaction when the engine starts. My hats off to Squatch and Senior. A labor of love.
