Holy cow! I knew this day would come, but did not expect it to be so soon. It is all coming in to focus. A lot of very determined work went into making that assembly go so smoothly.
Assembling the D2 after everything is rebuilt, cleaned up , etc. is the reward for all your hard work!! As much as I enjoyed hearing the pony and diesel fire up for the first time this video was even more enjoyable. The next will be when it moves under its own power!! Damn its looking GOOD!!

I find that back turning a threaded piece allows you to feel the starting points of both threads to meet and "fall back" from each other. This allows the threads to start into each other cleanly. As a avid viewer of this series, it is most enjoyable to watch the reassembly of the D2 into the best machine that could be made from machine that you pulled from behind that building. I find your begrudging affection for this machine to be what hooked me, and probably a lot of others to continue watching. As it and you were being pulled around by Sr. and the steering clutch broke loose that first time...the look of hopeful optimism was infectious. There are channels that deal with similar equipment that I have seen and had to leave, because the Host was obnoxious. Or faking it till he makes it. Sorry, I've got other things to do than that. You sir, are always enjoyable to watch and everyone knows that you have and will put in the work required to have a successful rebuild. Thanks Squatch253
To get real old "skool" solidly built, well over engineered machinery restored, the research, the meticulous detail into every single nut, bolt and washer - or shim - expertly documented and narrated is such a bloody satisfying thing to watch and listen to. Thank you , Toby. I enjoyed senior's vid too, hoping that some one would sort that mag tester out - I thought of Kenny like many others. Also hope he gets some more sap out of those trees! Bless your dear father, mine will be 86 in july.
I think my favorite moment was when the new gasket and cover went on over the main clutch. I was remembering back to when you and Senior were salvaging 1113 and it had piece of wood for that cover. Much better now!

I first saw a D-2 in 1980. A bridge contractor whose yard was across the road from ours had it. The owner told me he was going to restore it and teach his grandchildren how to be Cat-skinners. It looked to be complete, and in about as good shape as yours was when you started this project. The D-2 is proof that superior engineering is timeless. I can almost feel the master clutch snap in and out. Great job!
Boy Oh Boy are you and Pacific Hillbilly fascinating to watch as you're rebuilding your Dozers. For an old multi diploma mechanic on everything from small engines, motorcycles, Coast Guard radial seaplane engines and turboshaft Helocopter engines (plus aircraft ground support diesel engines) the way you guys show and explain in detail what your doing every step of the way pretty much qaulifies you guys to actually be Vocational school instructors if you chose to pass on your knowledge and work habits to another generation. Thanks for the entertainment you provided.

For this episode, mostly I was enjoying the camera work....plus the drama of will this nut get the heck on its bolt! But the best was the interior shots of gear meshing--never before in my viewing experience....kudos to the camera guy!
When I was younger, I use to always wonder what it would have been like to sit back and watch Michelangelo paint the Sistine Chapel. Hmmmm.....I imagine I would have gotten the same feeling as I watch you work. Beautiful and wonderfully satisfying!!!

Part of me was kind of sad though, thinking how old we are going to be, when you were putting the finals on, when the next guy pulls it apart and the clutch pacts see the light of day again!! LOL

It’s worth mentioning how not-dirty your hands were after the build: it speaks to how exacting your work has thus far been. The fact that you are able to run all your threads down by hand is also testament to your eye for detail. There’s a small corner of me that’s disappointed to see this project come to its conclusion: it’s a real pleasure to see you work and bring together your innate skill, your demanding standard and your immense knowledge. And with the snap of your fingers it looks like a D2 again! Aside from tracks all of your heavy lifting I’d done my friend - the most time consuming part of the tracks for you is going to be swapping the pads, that’s a lot of hardware and surface prep 👍

Congratulations on completing this one look forward to the rollout. When I was a kid I lived in a mining town and they used a D1 to plow the streets in the winter and to level the ore in the ships. Not a Mechanic on those Cats. But thoughts came when viewing the mounting the Transmission to Engine. I would thought there would be a Gasket between those two products to Keep the Main Clutch Housing Clean of Oil, Fuel and Etc.

One thing that I learned working on equipment is that it is better to use self locking nuts wherever possible. Zero chance of them backing off.

Not a Mechanic on those Cats. But thoughts came when viewing the mounting the Transmission to Engine. I would thought there would be a Gasket between those two products to Keep the Main Clutch Housing Clean of Oil, Fuel and Etc.
