thank you for dedicating time to cover land cruiser 100! these days there is a tons of commercial content about new cars and its really nice to see some real review on something 20 years old
I have owned 2 of these (my son rolled one that I plan to repurpose as a matching base camp trailer). I have extensively modified it and it is a brilliant platform. Of all of the mods, ICON based suspension overhaul was the most profound change, lifting it and dramatically improving on and off-road handling characteristics. Factory suspension was good, but the ICON upgrade was huge. The off-road capability now blows away most Rubicon wranglers. I also added an auxiliary fuel tank, Method bead grip wheels, 34” Falken AT4W tires, rock sliders, snorkel, cage and drawers for the back, fridge/freezer, Warn winch in a Slee steel bumper, Blue Ridge Overland Gear organizers, etc. I intend to regear and add lockers front and rear. I left the engine stock thus far, no real complaints other than fuel economy and recommend an aux tank and/or Jerry cans or rotopax. I hate the infotainment system from 2003 on and much prefer the older simpler system. Overall, these are brilliant vehicles with massive potential.
I wouldn't replace any bumper covers, but I would put 32's and a super 10 muffler with a 3" tail pipe on it. Nothing too crazy, and locking hubs up front, so I could have an actual 4x2 mode.
100 series is the best LC version. Comfortable, powerful ('05,'06 versions) and extremely reliable. For the majority of LC owners/buyers it does everything you might want/need. I would have it over the 80 or even 200 series.
I fully agree that it is very much loved. I own a 105 series. The 105 series is a 100series with an 80series live axle in the front instead of the independent suspension of the 100series. It also comes standard with front centre and rear diflocks. Mine has only done 200000km and had a full toyota service record.
Please be aware of the SAIS (secondary air injection system) issue with this generation of LC's. Also - there is a workaround but SOME LC's have a fault in the programming where the workaround won't work. I had an 07 LC with the fault... going into limp mode every day where the temp was under 40* is why I now drive a GX460.
This is my fav modern LC. I like the reserved styling. Classic and clean. Has everything you need. Can upgrade capability easily. Bulletproof drivetrain. What’s not to like?
I almost thought TFL got a 105. But still a 100 series with 4.7 V8 is by far better option. The next top choice would be 5th gen 4Runner 4L v6. Then comes the LC200s 5.7V8. Per Mr CarCareNut the UZ is one of the best engines Toyota produce. I'm also happy the 5th gen 4Runner 1GR-FE 4L V6 also in the best engines list.
I'm going to agree with another comment that the title is kind of click bait. That said, I enjoyed the video. I have a 2001 LX470 and it's the best car I've ever owned. Perfect mix of quality, comfort, capability, and reliability.
I'll never understand " hated" that must just mean it's the generation that didn't get lockers. I put 353k miles on my 02 100 and it's still my daily driver, purring like a kitten. In fact, my radiator just started leaking at 352k miles and I replaced that. The alternator and 1 coil finally gave out at 352k miles! Timing belt change every 90k miles! I also just replaced an 02 sensor. Incredible truck! I put a Grom carplay and backup camera, LX steering wheel, Dobinsons lift, TRD wheels...sexy truck!
Love my 06 LX 470. The AHC is such a nice and usable feature. For the price it would be hard to find a SUV that is more capable, comfortable, or more reliable. I can beat it in the woods and then drive home 80+ mph on the highway. I plan on driving it for another 20+ years.
All over the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Yemen the Toyota 100 series is King with tens of thousands of these models showing milage of 500,000 miles plus , and are easily repaired and serviced by scores of mechanics from Syria , Lebanon, Iraq and the Emirate States , these Toyota 100 series will live on as long as there are passionate owners in the middle east and Africa
That LC100 looks almost exactly like my mom's 2001 LC100 on the inside, only the center stack is a little simpler in my mom's. And hers is a Diesel. I love driving it! Their main problem is rust on the frame.
I am the original owner of a 2000 100 series exactly like the one in this video. It is without question the most reliable, best built car I’ve ever owned and will take you anyplace you’re brave enough to go. I also have a ‘97 2door Tahoe Z71 which I dearly love but as good as it is, the Land Cruiser will go places on stock all season Michelin LTX tires my Tahoe can only dream of. If there is ever a zombie apocalypse, I’m taking the 100 Series!
Absolutely spot on with this commentary Tommy! My 98 looks exactly like this. I always said it looks like a hippo in spandex. 😂 but I love it for all the reasons mentioned and would not trade it for anything.
Hi from rural Australia. I've got a 105 series with 700,000klms.. it's just about run in nicely now!😂 What the hell is a 105series I hear you Americans ask. It's a poverty pack 100 series with no computer, wind up windows, vinyl seats, 1hz naturally aspirated 6cyl diesel engine, solid front axle. It's selectable 4x4 with locking hubs. It's not fast but is about as dependable as gravity. It's absolute simplicity compliments my brain cells and it's never not got me home.
Over the past 25 years we've owned a 1981 FJ 60, a 1991 FJ 80, a 1999 LX 470 and now a 2004 100 series. When the FJ 60 was first released it was likewise mocked by 40 series lovers. Then a decade later it started to earn some respect. Same thing with the 80 series. Now the 100 series. Each one we have loved! But once you drive this V8 you can never go back. 313,000 miles and just drives like a dream!
The LC 100 was my first of 4 Land Cruisers. I kept it for 200,000 miles and it was fantastic. The only benefit of the 200 series v the 100 is the engine. I always felt the 100 was a bit under powered.
Continually calling this the black sheep strictly based on appearance is a strong opinion that many people here will disagree with. As a 100 series owner these are probably the best LCs you can buy right now, as the 200 series is showing questionable longevity and the 80 series is slow and becoming difficult to source parts. These will go 500,000 miles with little effort.
As a watch guy, comparing anything to a Rolex is a bad idea. Rolex are desirable for their style and name, not quality. They don't keep time all that well and they are prone to needing repair. Seiko would have been a better comparison. Beautifully built, never give you problems, but not something to brag about.
I feel like you might be selling Rolex short. They are well built tool watches that can be passed down for generations. I think you can even compare a Rolex service to a timing belt swap on a 100 series. I feel like the Sub vs Series 100 is an astute observation, even though grand seiko might be a more apt comparison.

I like the 100 the most of all the land cruisers (the 80 is a close 2nd). The 100 reminds me a lot of the 1st Gen Sequoia, which I also really like, and I own (2003).
my 1999 Land Cruiser laughed hysterically at "low teens mpg" 12-13mpg all day every day. 14+? never happened never will But the good news is you meet a lot of nice LC people at gas stations
American tax payers own many of these. All of them are the 4.2 TD. Early models have the CT-26 turbo from the Supra and MR2. Later they came with new Garrett Technology (GT) VGT turbo. It accelerated very well.
I drove one of those around the base in Afghanistan for a few months...was uparmored or at elast thicker glass/doors etc so it road like a boat with shocks/struts that were shot. Fun times!
I LOVE them, but, as you point it, it was a hard act to follow after the 80 Series. Check out the 105 Series. It’s a 100 Series body on an 80 Series chassis with a diesel engine. The Holy Grail, in fact.
@@scotteppers yeah, I know we didn’t receive the 105 and that it had both engine options, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be imported. It’s around 25 years old now.

Same! I always thought 100’s were lame till I got one. I have a ‘99 and also a ‘91 fj80. Having both in my yard…feel like a king! Gearing up to put a 4 speed manual in my 80 😮
You are wrong the best engine Toyota has put in a Landcruiser is the 1HDT-FTE diesel. I bought two new 80 series first one 1990 HZJ80 4.2 litre diesel that I put a turbo on , the a FZJ80 in 1997. Loved the petrol motor. Then a 100 series with the 1HDT- FTE , toured all over the out back of Australia crossing deserts and remote areas. 490 ft pound at 2200 rpm. I now have a 300 series with the twin turbo 3.3 litre V6. It is superb for my needs , but I would have loved to have the 100 with the 10 speed automatic from the 300 ….🍺🍺🍺🇦🇺🦘
The 100 series is not the black sheep. While it doesn’t have a solid axle (can easily be fixed with a sas with an 80 series axle) it’s V8 is more reliable compared to the 5.7L. The 5.7s are dropping head gaskets way more frequently compared to the 2uz. The torsion bar suspension is way more foolproof and requires less maintenance. I’d take a solid axle swapped 100 series over an 80 series every time.
I truely love 80 series have had 4, current driver is a hdj80 from europe, But if you want a great vehicle that will do mild stuff and is comfortable on the highway, this is it.. just remember like an 80 if you dont fix it yourself they can get expensive, they are 20+ years old and even 20 year old toyotas will need gaskets and seals...rubber does deteroiate over time...
The 100 had one big disadvantage (apart from the blobby styling) this was the first LC with IFS and it showed. The suspension and CV axles proved to be fragile off road. Toyota knew that because in some markets they sold something called the 105 which retained the solid font axle from the 80 series. I also must pont out that the 4.5L straight 6 was not ancient - it 1st appeared in 1992, but continued in production until recently as an industrial engine. Americans complain about the power, but I think it must be because of the autobox and emissions controls fitted for that market. I have the 3rd world version with a manual box and not even q catalytic converter and I can't really complain about power. I tow a 3500 lb trailer and rarely have to change down except on mountain passes. I have maxed it out 110 according to the GPS .
Interesting. I have a auto 80series and reading your comment I wonder if I should drive more in 2nd gear. 4th is only for flat highway, 3rd is for most of the time. Second is for going up hills. Should I put it in 2rd more often?
@nicholasvazquez5846 I have no experience with auto boxes - never owned one. I have driven other people's auto cars and don't like them one bit. Having said that, one thing to know is that an engine is most efficient at its torque peak rpm. So on yours that would be 3200 rpm. With my Carburettor engine that peak is at 2800, so that's where I keep it whenever possible when towing (= 66 mph) Questions - do you have the 3F engine or the 1FZ? The 3F was hopeless. Also have you done that big tire +lift kit thing that so many people like to do? That makes a big difference in the negative sense - messes up that gear ratios, gives you a false speed reading and greatly increases drag.
Because of the change to ifs and the styling not being as good as the fj80 land cruiser and it also lost the front locking differential and that reduced its off road abilities even more than the loss of a solid front axle.
@@lukeh6367they’re not valuable they just don’t look cool. They’re dated looking but also have no heritage in their design. They look like an 05 explorer.
That Landcruiser is a beautiful design. The trick with the Lexus version is to run it stock until something breaks, then convert it to the Landcruiser springs and dampers. I now drive a 2004 Corolla, and everyone keeps telling me that is the era to go for, as it is the peak of reliability and durability across the Toyota line up. Personally I think the 4.7 V8 is a fine sounding engine. It does not sound distressed or like it is working hard when being pushed. That tells me that the torque output is decent both in amount and location in the rev band. The slow steering is good. It makes it easy to locate the car with precision on the road or in adverse conditions. Were I after a vehicle of that sort, this would be top of the list. Just have to make sure the frame is solid. Some of them had frames that biodegraded into piles of ferrous oxide rather prematurely. There was a forced recall to replace frames on ones that failed. That went pretty much for all the full framed Toyota models. That fuel consumption is very off-putting, I have to say. While not 4 or all wheel drive, a 1986-91 Ford Crown Victoria or Mercury Grand Marquis wagon with the 351 and towing package is going to have similar cargo space, a 6,000 pound tow rating, and manage to return about 35 miles to the US gallon on the highway. It will go anywhere the average sport-ute driver wants to go. They are also a million mile plus vehicle when the tow package is present.
100 for the win. Elitists hate them because they are not the latest and greatest. Hard core offtoaders hate them (mostly) because of the lack of front solid axle (not every country got a 105-series). 100LC's just ooze that early 00's class. Its an era where its still old school luxury but has modern enough equipment and not loaded with crappy tech. And it goes most places off road as well.
These earlier generation Land Cruisers are over-engineered when compared to other Toyota SUVs.....such as the 4Runner or Sequoia (I'm not suggesting these are "bad" vehicles either, quite the contrary). The various systems in the LC are just beefier and more robust, therefore, they tend to last longer. Pretty much any Toyota SUV from the late 90s and early 2000s is a good choice, but the Land Cruiser has legendary longevity.
Great video review. I haven’t heard the 100 being the black sheep of the crew personal opinion and I do think of others that the 200 is the ugliest of all of them on top of being the most expensive. I have a 99 land cruiser with the rear locking diffs. I particularly bought an older model 100 because of the rear lockers. I do agree with your assessment that the 100 is likely the cheapest to get into a land cruiser, but I feel that’s going to definitely change soon. I do believe based on the history of the 100 will soon has its place alongside the 80 the 60 and the 40.
The Toyota people are all over the place right now because they are so distraught about the fact that that the new land cruisers are having so many issues
Completely agree. Good and bad. I do not have one but I have the 2uzfe in a '06 Tundra. Bad gas mileage but reasonably strong and capable. I'd like/ love to find an LC like the one Andre's dad has for a reasonable price, well maintained.
So this is Andre's dads LC? If my memory is correct didn't he purchase the red Tahoe from TFL for his dad too? Sounds like he got a sweet garage lineup going on. Anyways great video
Toyota had a tough time trying to beat the 80? All they had to do was put the updated engine and interior on the old chassis....simple. Biggest complaint in hind sight is the ifs

My friend’s mom bought one of these in 96 or 97. We took it out one night and I got to drive it. It was a very comfortable ride and was luxurious for that time. It wasn’t that bad in looks back then. Her’s was Green with tan I believe.
The 96 and 97 are 80 series w straight axles instead of IFS..full float rear end and coil springs front/rear..amongst other...Goodies.
thank you for dedicating time to cover land cruiser 100! these days there is a tons of commercial content about new cars and its really nice to see some real review on something 20 years old
I have owned 2 of these (my son rolled one that I plan to repurpose as a matching base camp trailer).
Tommy has never been a real fan of the 100 series but I agree, it needs some aftermarket love to look good.
I wouldn't replace any bumper covers, but I would put 32's and a super 10 muffler with a 3" tail pipe on it. Nothing too crazy, and locking hubs up front, so I could have an actual 4x2 mode.
If you can secure a 100 series land Cruiser, do so. It is a great value and the 2FE-UZ engine is truly remarkable. "Get one!"
the 2uz is very maintenance heavy, get a 1fz or 1hz
100 series is the best LC version. Comfortable, powerful ('05,'06 versions) and extremely reliable. For the majority of LC owners/buyers it does everything you might want/need. I would have it over the 80 or even 200 series.
80s better in everything except top end power. But they both have their purposes
@@jraddd347780s are rusty rn, I've been cross shopping 80 series 1fz with 105 1fz and as much as I'd prefer the lighter 80 series, they're all rusty
I had an 07 LC with the fault... going into limp mode every day where the temp was under 40* is why I now drive a GX460.
this affects 2005-2013 Toyota trucks, not just the Land Cruiser. Including the 2010-2013 GX460.
Series 100 LX470 on struts is my absolute dream daily. What an amazing truck.
Best feature of the 100 series? The ball chiller
Plus they are very reliable and easy to maintain … high demand
That LC100 looks almost exactly like my mom's 2001 LC100 on the inside, only the center stack is a little simpler in my mom's. And hers is a Diesel. I love driving it! Their main problem is rust on the frame.
Hired one in Australia. Amazing vehicle. 2 fuel tanks and diesel. Still my favourite hire car ever.
How much miles now and what where the biggest repair bills?
Absolutely spot on with this commentary Tommy! My 98 looks exactly like this. I always said it looks like a hippo in spandex. 😂 but I love it for all the reasons mentioned and would not trade it for anything.
Hi from rural Australia. I've got a 105 series with 700,000klms.. it's just about run in nicely now!😂
What the hell is a 105series I hear you Americans ask.
I don't think we ever got them.
cast iron block with required TB and water pump every 60-80k miles is why it lasts for so long. that block means won't crack and can machine headers.
You can get the Land Cruiser with the ahc suspension I have one with it. Mine is an 07.
Thank you for confirming my choice to buy the lc100 i am eyeing.
The LC 100 was my first of 4 Land Cruisers. I kept it for 200,000 miles and it was fantastic. The only benefit of the 200 series v the 100 is the engine. I always felt the 100 was a bit under powered.
620,000 miles on mines!! 2000 100 series!
Finally some good content, that's what we were waiting for (land cruiser owner)
Tommy saying Celine Dion. Means everything. 😂. We all know how he jams out in the car 😂 I mean you do have the range for it champ. Awesome vlog and Kelly Clarkson music of course
100 series owner here! it's my first ever LC. Sometimes I think about getting the 80 or 200 or my personal fav the 79 series, but honestly I think I'll stick to my hundo for a while. if anything I'll add to the fleet... not replace :)
Get an 80 to go with your hundo, you won't regret it. Put a 2uz in your 80 and your golden!
I like the 100 the most of all the land cruisers (the 80 is a close 2nd). The 100 reminds me a lot of the 1st Gen Sequoia, which I also really like, and I own (2003).
my 1999 Land Cruiser laughed hysterically at "low teens mpg"
12-13mpg all day every day. 14+? never happened never will
But the good news is you meet a lot of nice LC people at gas stations
American tax payers own many of these. All of them are the 4.2 TD. Early models have the CT-26 turbo from the Supra and MR2. Later they came with new Garrett Technology (GT) VGT turbo. It accelerated very well.
That is why I prefer the 100 series with the diesel engine 1HD-FTE - great torque, great grip
100 was so good. My 2000 LX470 was more solid and rode & handled FAR better than my trashy LX600, or the GX.
It’s a vibe.
Great Review!
My only suggestion…
A run through of a few tech specifics such as, engine, trans, diffs, etc.
Good Morning, Tommy! Good to start the day with a TFLClassic video.
I got an Hzj105 and love it!
A bit slow but best of both worlds!
I drove one of those around the base in Afghanistan for a few months...was uparmored or at elast thicker glass/doors etc so it road like a boat with shocks/struts that were shot. Fun times!
my daily driver is '98 TLC - love me some 100 series
I don't know what he's smoking, but 100 series is one of the most loved Land Cruisers in existence.
The Americans know nothing about land cruisers never got all the amazing engines in any of the series leading all the way up to the 200 with the VDJ
105 series with a 1hdfte would be the best car ever made imo, and i own au falcons
I LOVE them, but, as you point it, it was a hard act to follow after the 80 Series.
Check out the 105 Series. It’s a 100 Series body on an 80 Series chassis with a diesel engine. The Holy Grail, in fact.
You can also get it in the 4.5L petrol.
The 4.2L N/A diesel is a snail.
America did not get rhe 105 series. Also the 105 came in an FZ and HZ Models.. Petrol and Diesel.
@@scotteppers yeah, I know we didn’t receive the 105 and that it had both engine options, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be imported. It’s around 25 years old now.
@Queensizemusic
This is true..
A HZ105 would be sweet. But upkeep of a 97FZJ80, 87 FJ60 costs enough.
You in the states also?.
On MUD as LandCruisersRU.
Have a good 2025.
@@Queensizemusic all it really is, is an 80 series mechanically with a 100 series body, but it was mostly lower trim models so it was less plush than what half the 80 series models already had.
was just tellin my wife this the other night... cant believe I own a 100!! I hated the 100 for so long for all the wrong reasons. Now i'm both an 80 and 100 owner. 100 by a country mile is the better choice and daily driver. Final answer
Same! I always thought 100’s were lame till I got one. I have a ‘99 and also a ‘91 fj80. Having both in my yard…feel like a king! Gearing up to put a 4 speed manual in my 80 😮
@@reubensrustyauto😮😮
Im convinced im gonna swap a 8cylinder into it
You are wrong the best engine Toyota has put in a Landcruiser is the 1HDT-FTE diesel. It is superb for my needs , but I would have loved to have the 100 with the 10 speed automatic from the 300 ….🍺🍺🍺🇦🇺🦘
The 2UZ-FE will easily outlast a turbo 1HD-Fte.
@@svein-haraldribland8559 can I have some of your drugs please….
Iv had the 62 series, still drive my 80, I like these 100 series.
Dude what?? Nobody hates it. It just doesn't get enough recognition or respect. That thing is super underrated!
You guys need to bring back the buy or bust series!
The other shortcoming of the 2UZFE is the starter is located UNDER the intake manifold.
For real, a very big pain in the butt
With my Carburettor engine that peak is at 2800, so that's where I keep it whenever possible when towing (= 66 mph)
Questions - do you have the 3F engine or the 1FZ? The 3F was hopeless.
Also have you done that big tire +lift kit thing that so many people like to do? That makes a big difference in the negative sense - messes up that gear ratios, gives you a false speed reading and greatly increases drag.
I don't know. I recommended the Lexus variant to a co worker looking for a "good off roader" He ended up getting a Jeep Commander 🤷
I am not a Toyota guy but this car is a LEGEND.
So, .............why are they hated?
The IFS i think, but Toyota also offered 105 with solid axle and some got 70 series as working horse
They're not.
@@lukeh6367 read the title
Because of the change to ifs and the styling not being as good as the fj80 land cruiser and it also lost the front locking differential and that reduced its off road abilities even more than the loss of a solid front axle.
@@lukeh6367they’re not valuable they just don’t look cool. They’re dated looking but also have no heritage in their design. They look like an 05 explorer.
100 series is the most loved landcruiser. Super reliable strong v8 just amazing
That vs LR3 what one are you taking?
I worked for Lexus when first LX470 came out , now days they still get drug money for them, even if over 400klms on them here in Australia.
Pretty much any Toyota SUV from the late 90s and early 2000s is a good choice, but the Land Cruiser has legendary longevity.
i like the 100 series land cruisers. hope to see buy or bust episode soon.
2001 models with 200k plus are fetching $4500 in Dubai...
The Toyota people are all over the place right now because they are so distraught about the fact that that the new land cruisers are having so many issues
There is no NEW LAND CRUISER 300 in US we only got a Prado 250 that its cheap smaller brother.
@@terryivanov9009Who cares about US?
100 series rear seats recline, they do not slide forward/backwards. 100 series is the only series!
Hey mate, just wondering if you'd recommend a v6 4.5L GXL or a v8 4.7L GXL?
Completely agree. Good and bad. I do not have one but I have the 2uzfe in a '06 Tundra. Bad gas mileage but reasonably strong and capable. I'd like/ love to find an LC like the one Andre's dad has for a reasonable price, well maintained.
The front looks kinda like a mixed of 1st gen LS and Avalon
I have a 2004 LC. Not yet 200k miles.
So this is Andre's dads LC? If my memory is correct didn't he purchase the red Tahoe from TFL for his dad too? Sounds like he got a sweet garage lineup going on. Anyways great video
I agree on the land cruiser history and the 80 series is the best land cruiser built
For classics, do Honda CR-Z
Off the mark with this one. The 100 series is as loved as all the others
i love this one but my fav is the 80 series
Toyota had a tough time trying to beat the 80? All they had to do was put the updated engine and interior on the old chassis....simple.
Biggest complaint in hind sight is the ifs
