Scalping Bermuda Lawns a Critical Spring Step

Doc goes over tips on scalping Bermuda lawns including some updated information. Scalping is the only way to make sure 100% of the grass that's showing is solid green. If you don't scalp, you'll have lots of dead, brown grass showing through when you start cutting. He also suggests doing a core aeration at this time since the lawn is going to be short.

I am totally on your email list Doc! The funny thing is whenever people stop to ask about my lawn, the first words out of my mouth are “Doc says…”. LOL! If I won that mower, I’d probably mow every lawn on my street just to be able to use it! 😆

Hey doc I've watched a lot of your videos and I treated my yard for weeds as I just bought a house and it was really overran. I'm a first-time homeowner so I'm trying to get my yard looking really good so I overkilled it with the spray that you had mentioned in your previous videos. It's been a couple weeks now and everything's dying off do I need to go out and break up all the dead weeds?
I deployed and missed my pre-emergent window 😢😢😢 living alone and having trust issues that someone isn’t going to ruin your lawn is tough 😂

Doc, have you thought about revisiting your leveling video near your pond? Similar to when you did your mower ruts at your old house? That might make things easier on the reel mower, plus, I have a hillside that needs work. Maybe the video could help me out. Thanks for doing what you do.

Can you feature the beach house to show how the zoysia lawn maintenance during the spring? I put down my pgf balance but can’t find that bottle of prodiamine online so I may have to image for trouble area in my lawn being overtaken by dollarweed.

Looking great Doc! I found a nice used 20” McLane reel mower w/ a catcher I’m interested in buying off Craigslist but the front of the unit has two wheels, not that ribbed bar you have. Am I able to swap the wheels with a bar?
You should get the harley rake attachment for the skid steer its much much better and faster then the bucket with teeth

I've always heard that if you disturb the surface you will lose the efficiency of your pre em? I'm running my core aerator after the rain this week and then applying pre em afterwards. Have I been told incorrectly?
it only opens up maybe 3% of the surface but scalping and aerating both stir up seeds.
Funny for years you were fighting weeds. Now you large areas of broad leaf grasses and clover. I would consider the Toro Zero Turn as it is very versatile.

So 2, 4D is not a pre-emergent? I still got weeds but I may have to re-seed some of the shady areas of my lawn. Can I seed if I apply it and how long should I wait to re-seed?

On my second cut, HOC is 2 inches. Lotsa invasive grasses, Poa and maybe some fescue. I am retired so I have a lot of time. I bought a jug of Roundup and a sponge, gloves and bucket. My zoysia is still sleep, so 2 weeks ago I “painted@ the poa and fescue to kill it. My zoysia is at 2, and the poa/fescue six maybe seven inches high. So it was easy to see and do. Couple of days later it was dead. I still have a lot because my dum dum neighbor dumped a 50 pound bag of fescue on top of his zoysia lawn ( he is an idiot and doesn’t know what he is doing). I tried to explain to him, but he blew me off. Plus his cultural practices are bad, cuts lawn every three weeks, no bueno.
Glad that I found your channel as there are so many conflicting theories on how to take care of Bermuda yards. Your videos and guide are pretty strait forward and I am looking forward to the results in my yard.

I have tiff tuf bermuda, some of the areas are thin. I have an unlimited source for water and currently have an irrigation system. Can I mix in a fescue seed with my lawn year round? If so how do I adjust the fertilizer and pre emergent.

Hey Doc, what brand and type will you be reseeding the bermuda area with?
I've been following for several years and used this channel to renovate my bermuda lawn! It's come a long way. The only thing I'm missing is a reel mower! Or to be honest, I would definitely use that zero turn for a side hustle and do some mowing for businesses around my house.
Split program: Doc I put out my Dimension pre emergent this afternoon for split program - storm rolled in tonight and calling for roughly 2” of heavy rain.. maybe more.. am i screwed? Should I re apply?
If the soil was dry... you should be ok. We had the same rains.
