Any man who tries to be good all the time is bound to come to ruin amongst the great number who are not good. Hence a prince who wants to keep his authority must learn how not to be good and use that knowledge or refrain from using it as necessity demands.

I volunteered as a tax aide. I have finished reading the 48 Laws of Power. A woman walked into our office using a walker plus she had an oxygen tank. I prepared her return. I noticed how long it took for her to sit down. I walked over to my boss (volunteer) to see if he could review and complete her return since her mobility was limited.
He asked me in a loud voice, “Are her legs broken?”. I said, “No”. He said, “Tell her to come to my desk”. She overheard our conversation. She gathered her walker and oxygen tank and walked over to his desk. He completed her return. She walked out of his office but stopped by my desk to thank me. That angered my boss since she did not thank him. Power games happen even in volunteer situations not just work situations.

@@lolawants2008 I agree with you. I had just finished reading the 48 Laws of Power when this incident happened. I assumed that the games that Robert Greene talked about happens in a work environment or politics but not in volunteer organizations. Also, both my boss and the woman are of the same race while I am not. That also angered him that she came to thank me and not him.

@@timcolaba church, school, book club, gym, mom’s groups, yada yada. So sad. It’s so gross a man like that in that position. That woman should not have had to lower her dignity to work with him to get the help she needed. There is a great Ted talk I think about “givers, takers, & matchers” - I think it has correlate ideas that dovetail interestingly, either way it’s pretty mind blowing to help explain a lot of dynamics for me in my life (definitely a giver, often to my detriment). I’ll try to find the link but those keywords should prob work to find it. Fascinating & also depressing.
Edit- okay yeah it’s a Guy named Adam Grant- there are a couple Ted talks, a google talk & some other by him. I forget what he’s done but I think he’s one of those with an “impressive” résumé. Worthwhile subject for a dive

I learnt over the years being someone who is straight up front and not playing the game that it is easy to identify a good leader from a bad one. The good leader tends to embrace the straight up honesty and the bad leader has no tolerance for it at all.

Man, I've said this before. I wish this book had been published back in the late '70s or early'80s, when I was a young adult. None of the 48 Laws was taught anywhere. Instead, you had to learn the lessons, but doing so always left you in a state of confusion and cognitive dissonance, because the laws contradicted what was taught and generally accepted: "honesty is the best policy," "just be yourself in all situations," "strive to be a high achiever and don't care what anyone else thinks," "show off your talent with pride" "good things come to those who work hard" and on and on. This book has everything that I needed to learn but was not taught. Better late than never.

I feel like everyone already sort of innately knows about the existence of this "game", even if some may not want to admit it for one reason or another.
The hard part is to find balance when doing this, when to play and when not to play. Playing too much means being stuck in a fake world of mind games, social approval and politricking. Unhealthy life of lies if taken too far. But never playing at all means risking the loss of resources, opportunity, productivity and teamwork. And the opportunity to face social adversity and grow as a result. And this is the only way to become a leader among other humans. And the world sorely lacks good leaders/"bosses"
I find the best leaders have a good sense of how to guide the game such that everyone feels they are a "boss". Everyone has accountability and wants to support a good boss who supports a good team. In that case, everyone wins the "game" in this best case scenario

Crazy thing is my mother played all these games with me as a child . She had this book from when I was very young, never understood her logic back then but until I picked up the book about a year ago, things started clicking . Very interesting.

I wonder if power is simply a temporary gift, something one holds for a while before it inevitably moves on? It seems that those around the powerful tend to mimic their actions-not necessarily out of loyalty or admiration, but because of the influence they currently wield. In this sense, it’s less about the individual themselves and more about aligning with the authority they represent, knowing that power can shift hands at any time. We all instinctively play this game because we immediately recognise who holds power in the moment. It's not just about conscious decisions, but a natural response to the dynamics of influence that shape our interactions with society and the world.

At my job, I have no power, as a low level employee. Still, as Robert Greene has said, you have to understand that people are touchy feely beings, that have these extra senses going on.
I see this, in real time. Amongst my most closely-seated peers, you let me start coming in 10 minutes early or leave 10 minutes late, it’s almost like my peers don’t know whether to sit, stand or leave. I hear at least one of them slowly packing, some keys jiggling, then it’s like they’re sitting and waiting for me to budge. Like they’re worried they missed a memo on when they can come and go. I’m not a manipulator, by nature. Still, I notice these things. I don’t derive much power from it. I just notice that that’s simply how people navigate.

@@GabrielXDrums yeah, I saw it years ago, too. I worked for an office supply store. No one was happy there. Then, I quit, because I was hired at Apple Retail. That office supply store started losing the few people they had. Just takes one person to make a move.
I guess what feels weird about it is that it feels like a game of Follow the Leader, except you don’t even have to be a leader.

@@privateprivate8366 they’re all clones, it happens especially when I tend to hit on women, usually I go for the prettiest ones and me being a decently looking guy, they respond nicely usually and then other guys around I notice them turn their gaze and think that’s a green light to ALSO try to make a move or swoop in, it doesn’t happen often but I can see when it does.
      Another example lol

    • @privateprivate8366
      @privateprivate8366 Рік тому

@@GabrielXDrums well I think it happens in a few spheres.
Many years ago, I worked 2 jobs. One as a creative, full-time, during the day. The other, Apple Retail, nights and weekends.
I have a decent face. But no great body. Still, at Apple, there were 3 coworkers that hit on me. One wanting to take me with him to Italy. One manager wanting to take me with him, to Ireland. He even had a bit of a jealous rant, in front of a couple of customers, when I didn’t reciprocate and I scolded him for it.
But then, I was telling a coworker about 2 of those guys, at my day job and it was within earshot of the company president. I don’t know if that was the cause. But I’d been working for that president for 7 years. All of a sudden, the chase was on, for about 4 years. He was everything. Great looking, seemingly smart (not sure, if you’re chasing me and you’re my married boss), and he seemed to be a sigma male. Perfect. But, I picked up on even a jealous and possibly possessive streak. Wasn’t sure if he fired another guy, who seemed to have his head on me, for that.
So, in some environments, it’s possible that something small and quite unlikely, might trigger a cascade of changes. And note that, that president was an indifferent and angry personality. I figured he hated me, as much as he did everyone else and everyone, including me, was terrified of him. Still, something triggered this change.

I've never really liked many of the power games people play. Even when I'm the one at the top or higher up. It gets selfish, I feel like people will place themselves ahead of others for their own sake. I understand it from an objective viewpoint, but it's never felt genuinely right or authentic to me. Once you see how prevalent it is it can turn you off from even putting yourself in those situations. Maybe this is a flaw in myself, because it is the way of the competitive world and if you don't interact and behave similarly you will often lose to those that do/are. I just don't like the thought of having to ignore or dismiss my conscience to get ahead. Perhaps it's why I much prefer to work alone, but that greatly limits your options for career progress. Hmm, must think on this more.

Suddenly an idea sprung to my mind: what if Robert Greene wrote a book titled _"The Art of Passing It On"_ or something of the kind? Such a thing would be a great resource I believe, especially for men (and women) of about his own age group and upwards! I believe he is exactly the right man with the appropriate expertise to write such a book of guidance and it would be of very meaningful help to humanity!
