Safety doesn't kill malfeasance does. When honda came to the USA with its groundbreaking safety and survivability, the percentage of deadly crashes increased....so did the speed. Drivers felt safer, did more dangerous things, and died because of their actions. Going slow in the left lane in itself doesn't cause crashes, idiots trying to speed around them in the right side do. (Though if you block traffic in the left lane you're still a cunt who's existence creates more crashes) But Speeding cars in general just add more energy to crashes as well. There's a direct correlation between energy released in vehicle collisions and survivability. Speeding is only safer fir the selfish asshole doing so.
Just tell them to look up visual saccades and tell them to look in a mirror at each eye and switch which eye you are looking at. Your visual cortex literally edits out fast moving things it finds irrelevant. Then ask them what will happen if they are looking at the radio dial and someone goes from 80 to 53 in 7/8ths of a second when you are only 7 ft behind them. When people say 'I didn't even see...' human reaction time sucks, and if you have the best in the world you are just the best sucky human.
Nigel still not knowing how good his voice is, even after all these years is surprising to me. It won't be for the lack of compliments (from random people though).
Nigel has a ridiculously attractive voice and cute looks as well. Honestly even without his looks, he could just start becoming a voice actor and I’d listen to hours of him reading audio books. I’m not saying they have to be erotica, but if there was erotica read by Nigel, it’s not like I wouldn’t want to listen to it 😳 I’m in a lesbian marriage but I would be Nigel’s lightbulb if he wants. Respectfully.

if you're filling up your car with the engine running, at least on a somewhat modern car, you can get a check engine light or the engine can even start to stumble or misfire due to how the evaporative emissions systems work on modern cars. That's why a worn out, leaking, or cheaply made aftermarket oem replacement gas cap can cause a check engine light as well. Your car knows if you fill up without shutting it off. And it judges you for it.

I am a big ole traffic nerd, watching individual driving patterns and reading at what stage the lights are in, and whether they are censored or timed, really helps.
I once almost caused an accident because I was wearing snow boots and tried to press the break but my boot was so large because of my foot size that after pressing a little bit my boot was on both pedals, and the breaks were not activated enough to prevent accelerating. I also had trouble just pressing the accelerator without hitting the breaks or getting stuck behind the breaks. Ever since then, even in winter, I drive barefoot.
Nigel's take on drivers is pretty much spot on IMO. You're either a bad driver or you're just trying to slalom between all the bad drivers from point A to B.
The driving conversation reminds of that classic George Carlin observation: “anyone who’s driving slower than you is an ‘idiot’… and anyone driving faster than you is a ‘maniac’!”
For some reason I feel like Nigel's driving is exactly like that old Mickey Mouse cartoon where Goofy is driving them with a caravan and shit hits the fan both left and right but somehow everything ends up just fine and he hasn't noticed anything ever going wrong. Like he's obliviously living on the edge of chaos but everything just works out in a "The Man Who Knew Too Little" kind of way.
I just don't get why people think saving seconds is worth anything at all while driving, even if you get to where you're going, seconds aren't going to make a difference, and the increased risk is just insane to accept in order to save seconds.
I think the way Linus Sebastian describes Chinese manufacturing is best. He says (not a direct quote) "The Chinese factories can make stuff for much cheaper, but the quality and worker treatment is much worse than an American factory, but if you want the same safety, worker benefits, quality, and etc. Then the cost compared to American manufacturing is about the same."
With the screwdriver moving from Taiwan to mainland, he seemed to change his tune regarding quality. Way more impressed with the quality and expertise.
I'm in Oregon and I don't think there's any law against pumping your own gas. I see people do it often, especially if a gas station is particularly busy, but there are also a few places that will just trust you to do it yourself. They typically have someone available to pump the gas, but you can just tell them you got it and they understand. The more commercial gas stations around here are a bit more adamant on having the attendance pump the gas, but I've never seen an attendant stop someone from pumping it themselves, even at these commercial gas stations. It's like a choose your own adventure book for gasoline.
I'm in Idaho & we can't understand Oregon & their weird gas pumping thing, it's kinda hit or miss...I looked it up & apparently it's a law made back in the 50s that's still in use today 😂
@@thirtythreeeyes8624 gas pump fires aren't exactly a common thing 🤷🏻♀️ Also, Oregon can be kinda rabid about it, like they'll stop you if you try to pump your own gas (multiple experiences) it's not really to help people, they are a bit crazy over there. Sorry Oregon 🤷🏻♀️
@@westie430 Common no but, if they do happen it's a pretty big deal. Besides who gives a shit about pumping their own gas, would you want to fill up your own propane tanks or do you enjoy bagging your own groceries too?
@@westie430 I've never seen an attendant prevent someone from pumping their own gas, but I live in an incredibly rural county so things aren't the same here as they are in the cities and whatnot. I'm also on the coast, so if your experience in Oregon is from the godawful East then I can't really comment much on that. It's also different in the metropolitan areas around places like Eugene, Portland, Roseburg, etc.
@59:00 When they fill propane tanks, they open a valve on the tank they are filling. This is how they tell when it is full. You never fill a tank more than 80% so there is room for expansion if it heats up. The valve is at the 80% mark assuming it's on a level surface. Once liquid, rather than vapor propane comes out, you stop. They are supposed to shut the out-going valve everything is connected to so pilots go out before filling. Also, if there is an on demand water heater, there is a chance that there is a spark ignitor that could start if someone tried using the hot water while the propane is being filled. So no one should be in the rv while it's being filled.
It's kind of weird to say this in an age when stick shifts are far less manufactured than automatics, and we even have one pedal driving with electrics, but I think there's a lot to be said for the mindfulness you have to drive stick. I honestly think having mostly driven in my stick shift has made me be a much more mindful driver simply because if I get distracted, I can't shift down or up or whatever. I don't know if this is true, but I remember some countries in Europe still required people to learn stick, even tho basically no stick shift cars were being manufactured anymore. But like, driving stick, you learn your rpms, shift points, etc., by touch and hearing, but you also start to pay more attention to things like the tires and breaking, because those are more involved with a stick. It's not just pushing break and pushing throttle.
I agree that driving a manual can force a driver to be more aware. My wife and I both learned on manuals. All of our avoidable accidents have been in automatics, now we both daily drive manuals. My ADHD mind wanders in an automatic, I get bored, accidents happen. Driving a manual is fun for me (usually) and I'm always thinking 5 seconds ahead, driving predictable. Now manuals are no longer an option in many cases because it won't play well with modern driver assists and CVTs do better on mileage tests.
You're by law required to learn stick where I live You can choose between auto and stick for the actual exam tho, and you get the same license no matter what if you pass, but you MUST learn on stick
I don't know about european countries where people have to learn driving manual without manual cars being produced, but I do live in a european country where driving manual is the norm and automatic cars are very much in the minority. So yes, people here do learn to drive manual, because they will most likely only ever drive manual cars, as they are the standard here, so they are very much still being produced. There might also be other european countries where what you said applies, but I don't know the specifics of every countries car industry
I really like inked designs on shirts, like you can literally see the fibers in the design, but it's probably way more expensive to do that with a black background.
Guys i actually really liked the driving discussion! I think Nigel might be onto something about "bad" (accident prone) drivers just being oblivious because good drivers avoid them
Used to refill whilst running because my car had a dodgy immobilizer that made it a crap shoot to get it started. One time it had a cracked return hose and was pumping fuel on to the forecourt. I panicked, jumped in the car, and drove it home leaving a trail of fuel behind me like something out of an action movie. But no-one threw a cigarette on the ground to blow me up. 🤣
In Oregon the pump attendants will usually fill you up with the vehicle running ESPECIALLY if it's a shitty car because sometimes it's so shitty that you can't get it started again so once it's running you just don't shut it off.
Oregon and New Jersey both have employees at gas stations to fill your vehicle for you. I know in Oregon at least, that except under special circumstance you aren't allowed to fill your tank yourself. This becomes interesting when we Oregonians go to another state and have forgotten how it works.
I live in oregon and i fill up my gas all the time cause sometimes the attendants are busy and i know some places that are understaffed and have you do it
Custom framer here- I have had to frame some...things in the past, but i can tell you that most people can get things custom ordered now. I do now have an idea to offer discrete framing for anime conventions now
51:00 The funny thing is I took drivers ed a few years ago and they actually teach you NOT to do it hand over hand nowadays. Push-pull steering is the standard drivers ed steering technique. It's also 8 and 4 now instead of 10 and 2.
I have gotten gas while the car was running exactly one time, the battery was shot and I had to get a jump to get the car going in the first place and was worried if I turned it off it wouldn't start up again.
i know a lot of people who've always filled up while the engine was running. i really dont see the issue other than over caution. Unless you are having gasoline fights with a car that backfires there really isnt any way for anything to happen. gas fumes really dont escape the gas port much, you can smell extremely small amounts, plus it rises away from the car. If you are really worried about the car leaking gas somewhere then what difference does it make when filling, vs driving away? The main reason people do it where i live in the midwest is because it gets fucking cold. When you've only just started your car and got to the gas station in the morning, you want that heater running while you stand outside. Also a lot of older vehicles are a pain to get started and the last thing you want is for the cold to kill your battery while youre pumping gas.
I've lived in Florida for 30 years, and I've seen 1 person pump gas while the car was running. I was with my buddy while I was in highschool. I, very stoned, thought I was going to die a painful, firey death. Full on panic for like 3 minutes, and nothing happened we were just fine. Apparently it is a thing people do.
Vapors aren't contained from the nozzle going into the neck of the fuel tank.. you can see it evaporating while you pump. You are outside tho so it dissapates pretty quickly. It's a non-zero % chance you kill yourself and anyone around you.....
"China has better manufacturing capabilities and resources." Well, yeah, decades of off-shoring almost ALL manufacturing in almost every industry will have that effect.
I think turning off your car to refuel is more important when you're talking about older vehicles, where static electricity could start a fire. From what I've heard modern cars often have grounded fuel fill ports and grounded gas nozzles at the pump. So it would be very rare to start a fire by filling with your car running. But there are laws that say you cant leave your car while idling as well and this may have more to do with those laws.
I mean most handles for the nozzles are rubber so if it was you that was static, even turning of the car won't help. (My apartment is filled with static in the winter, I have to discharge myself whenever I get up)
So I was a young new driver and I had to get to an apointment over an hour away, this was the 90's so I had a paper map and thats it. there was multipul detures from contruction. I get the the place and I am hauling ass when I see there is a temporary dirt side road leading to the driveway to the place. being young.... I cranked the wheel, the car (a 1978 pontiac catalina) went into a slide. the back end hit a wooden telephone pole which changed the slide and sent my car into the fence of the place I was going. the chainlink lifted up over the car and pinned it down. I walked the driveway and explained I had crashed into their fence, and that I was there because I had an apointment for, drum roll please.... Drivers Education. they thought it was the funniest shit ever.
@@westie430 yeah it was one of those times where you start to wonder if you are in a movie or something. I also got lost on the way home, ended up having to beg for cash and use a payphone to call my parents. My Dad knew the exact turn that I messed up on the way home and luckily thought the cash was pretty funny too. I drove that car for a couple more years with the back bumper held up with wire. eventually added duct tape racing stripes and a wrestiling trophy as a hood ornament.
Coming from a cold climate, I always left the car running while fueling up. Didn't even know it was a concern until I moved to another state and someone said something. Now I'm going to have to dig and and see if the risk has been quantified... I mean, I get that it's a risk, but, so is driving around with 10-20 gallons of flammable liquid in the first place. That said, I'll probably remember this podcast and turn the car off from now on. So, thanks. You either saved my life, or wasted 30seconds of it per month for the rest of my time on earth 😂
I stop the car in gas stations simply to save fuel (as well as to lock it while I go buy stuff inside) lol... fuel prices here are just kind of disgusting and I often take a while at the gas station anyways. And in-before someone says I'm an asshole for leaving my car standing at the pump... I have seen over half the pumps in use simultaneously just **once** (I have a car with over 1000km range so I basically never have to fuel anywhere but at my local fuel station, which is in a small town lol)
I've had one multiple vehicle collision, and it was a head-on that was my fault because my entire brake system failed which caused me to lose control. The result has been that my trust in repair shops have been destroyed because the brakes had been recently fixed.

I would say that it's perfectly safe to fuel up with the car on if you are getting diesel, I would do it with gasoline but i don't recommend it. (Disclaimer: When you take advise check the source, this is a comment on a podcast that is called safety third)
I'm from MN. I never turn my car off when getting gas, especially in the winter. I'm not on my phone while filling and I'm by the nozzle, but I never turn it off.
i believe i brought this on myself. I modified my flywheel to less than half the stock weight for tincy bit more power out and quicker shifts. the mod caused a weird "warm start" issue where it doesnt like to start after less than hot driving. I own a pair of gas station jumper cables due to this... its a known issue i have. starts cold, starts hot. not warm. I fill running, dont tell my mom.
lots of engineers have anecdotes about their experience with chinese suppliers and if it were up to them theyd rather buy stuff from here and pay extra than having to deal with that but usually the company makes the decision so you make do
Ugh I live in Oregon and the gas filling law is so stupid...especially beacause in rural areas, the stations close at like 9:00...so after that you can get stranded. One of the many reasons I love having an electric car now
We have gas station employees that fill gas and they won't fill gas unless you turn off your engine, and they have special shoes which prevents static build up

(Though if you block traffic in the left lane you're still a cunt who's existence creates more crashes)
But Speeding cars in general just add more energy to crashes as well.
When people say 'I didn't even see...' human reaction time sucks, and if you have the best in the world you are just the best sucky human.

if you're filling up your car with the engine running, at least on a somewhat modern car, you can get a check engine light or the engine can even start to stumble or misfire due to how the evaporative emissions systems work on modern cars. That's why a worn out, leaking, or cheaply made aftermarket oem replacement gas cap can cause a check engine light as well. Your car knows if you fill up without shutting it off. And it judges you for it.

I once almost caused an accident because I was wearing snow boots and tried to press the break but my boot was so large because of my foot size that after pressing a little bit my boot was on both pedals, and the breaks were not activated enough to prevent accelerating.
A lot of the time people don't even get that far in thought, just that it feels faster so that's good enough

@@mattymerr701 I wonder if it's because of what the chinese government is
I'm in Oregon and I don't think there's any law against pumping your own gas.
@@westie430New Jersey too and I would imagine it does keep the fire risk down on top of making a few more jobs and helping out disabled people.
@@thirtythreeeyes8624 gas pump fires aren't exactly a common thing 🤷🏻♀️
Also, Oregon can be kinda rabid about it, like they'll stop you if you try to pump your own gas (multiple experiences) it's not really to help people, they are a bit crazy over there.
53:24 Allen is so aware, we were actually missing Kevin there.
You're by law required to learn stick where I live
You can choose between auto and stick for the actual exam tho, and you get the same license no matter what if you pass, but you MUST learn on stick
@@theonebman7581 20 years ago in the US my driver's school wouldn't teach parallel parking, much less manual. Long live the stick.

I think Nigel might be onto something about "bad" (accident prone) drivers just being oblivious because good drivers avoid them
Its because nigel has an authoritative voice
Used to refill whilst running because my car had a dodgy immobilizer that made it a crap shoot to get it started. One time it had a cracked return hose and was pumping fuel on to the forecourt. I panicked, jumped in the car, and drove it home leaving a trail of fuel behind me like something out of an action movie. But no-one threw a cigarette on the ground to blow me up. 🤣
Part of my IT work was recovering data and that of course includes photos. I've seen some horrible shit over the years.
To quote the mythbusters, "suki des Nigel san"

I have gotten gas while the car was running exactly one time, the battery was shot and I had to get a jump to get the car going in the first place and was worried if I turned it off it wouldn't start up again.
every time i get on the road i actively prevent like 2 accidents that i was un aware would have occured
Nigel may have gotten the simps to undress for him, but Allen got sniddies. I would count that as a win.
i know a lot of people who've always filled up while the engine was running. i really dont see the issue other than over caution.
'Hunker down and work hard' never a truer word spoken ahaha
All the Safety Third ads this episode convinced me to get 4 sticker packs & a pin.
I've lived in Florida for 30 years, and I've seen 1 person pump gas while the car was running. I was with my buddy while I was in highschool. I, very stoned, thought I was going to die a painful, firey death. Full on panic for like 3 minutes, and nothing happened we were just fine. Apparently it is a thing people do.
it's really not a big deal to do. you're more likely to create a spark after getting into/out of your car because of the static build up.
Vapors aren't contained from the nozzle going into the neck of the fuel tank.. you can see it evaporating while you pump. You are outside tho so it dissapates pretty quickly. It's a non-zero % chance you kill yourself and anyone around you.....
Def already put these stickers on my work trucks. I'm a plumber so the "open hole" on the excavator truck is perfect
I cranked the wheel, the car (a 1978 pontiac catalina) went into a slide. the back end hit a wooden telephone pole which changed the slide and sent my car into the fence of the place I was going. the chainlink lifted up over the car and pinned it down.
I always keep away from smashed/crashed cars because if it happend once, it will happen again, but not with me
I stop the car in gas stations simply to save fuel (as well as to lock it while I go buy stuff inside) lol... fuel prices here are just kind of disgusting and I often take a while at the gas station anyways. And in-before someone says I'm an asshole for leaving my car standing at the pump... I have seen over half the pumps in use simultaneously just **once** (I have a car with over 1000km range so I basically never have to fuel anywhere but at my local fuel station, which is in a small town lol)
Back fire is when combustion comes back out of the intake. After fire is when excess fuel is ignited in the exhaust.
I've had one multiple vehicle collision, and it was a head-on that was my fault because my entire brake system failed which caused me to lose control. The result has been that my trust in repair shops have been destroyed because the brakes had been recently fixed.

i believe i brought this on myself.
