It’s that time of year again when we reflect on what it’s taken to keep the E60 M5 on the road and in good shap.
This time round I also go right back to when I first bought the car 5 years ago.

Only had mine 14 mounths now and with all my cars it went straight to bmw specialist for a health check and a full main service new gearbox speed sensor and gearbox oil and 2 oil changes so not bad it is M.O.T next then oil change again...i must say a massive thanks to GUY because without your videos i like lots of others would not have ever got a e60 m5 ......
Respece to you GUY ❤🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Nice one Steve, good luck with the MOT 👍Cheers, I appreciate it 🇬🇧🇬🇧
Your cars are so clean man! I've got a 2004 BMW 330Ci Msport (very low mileage absolute peach my pride and joy) and also a 130k mile 2004 645Ci V8. Greetings from Essex!👍
Good to hear from a viewer from my home country 👍 That’s a nice pair of cars, i daily drove a 330ci for 9 years, it was a great car! Yes, I’m a clean freak with my cars
I love my 2009 M5. And it may sound weird but I love spending money on it to keep it in great shape :)
All the best for you and your car and keep on posting these great videos !
Cheers Max, yes there’s certainly much worse things to spend your money on, that’s for sure!
@@MTechGuy definitely:)
Wow. The fuel consumption is very eyewatering 😮
It’s no joke!
I've owned my 08 M6 from 74,000km to 99,000km and it's been extremely reliable. The only three things that have needed replacement due to failure are the oil cooler, thermostat and voltage regulator which are all very common items with these cars. I had the diff seals replaced too due to a minor leak. This generation of M5 and M6 are about the closest thing I think you can get to an affordable supercar. The running gear is very similar to a Lamborghini Gallardo, Lexus LFA or Porsche Carrera GT, yet these BMW's are a fraction of the price. They are an absolute event to drive, so much so that just like the aforementioned models I think treating them as a 'special occasion'/weekend car works best as they crave the open road and are somewhat unpleasant (I find personally) to use in everyday scenarios. For that I use my E90 330i, another brilliant car.
Thanks for sharing Will, them items are pretty common and not really a big deal. Absolute event to drive is accurate! Although I like driving mine so much I have been daily driving it from time to time more & more. Good choice on your daily driver though, I currently have a 130i manual as my normal daily with the same engine
Just discovered your channel.. very informative & useful.. good to see you doing things properly. 👍
Cheers James, thanks for checking out the channel. Hope you get some value out of the videos
starting to save up for an m5 for myself one day, hopefully within the next 2 or so years. Your videos are helping a lot with understanding what to look out for on these cars.
Nice one, get one while they are still cheap
@@MTechGuy that’s exactly the plan, might not get insured for it when I’m 20 but I’ll probably keep it forever so it won’t matter
I own a 2009 M6 convertible with now 58k km’s. Nothing happened so far. I averaged 14l/100km during our holiday, so using less fuel is possible! 😊
Would be interested to see you do a clutch realignment between clutch replacements. Wondering if the helps to shake off some of the jerkiness we all experience with the SMG sometimes..
Keep them videos coming! Thx.
That’s not bad mileage on a run. No plans to access the clutch at this stage, the SMG has always operated smooth
07 m5 with just under 170k. Had it for 5 years as well. Have done the motor, rod bearings, rod bolts throttle actuators, whole smg unit, clutch twice. All plugs and coils. Thermostat, steering sensor. Im sure there are PLENTY more things im missing haha.
Thanks for sharing, most of them items to be expected (except SMG unit) but clutch twice! you must drive it hard!
I am selling my 06 with 166000km, owned it for 6 years, only small issues like yours, but been a very reliable car, will miss her for sure.
Hi Jay, yes I’ve seen it for sale- not gonna lie, I’ve been tempted! Did you buy an F10?
Yea, not allwed to keep both, so the one the wife refuses to drive, has to go, not sure if that says more about the car, or the missus?
Fair enough, it’s the SMG that does it!
It’s been reliable?
I’ve seen most people complaining about it breaking down constantly
@@Stol3nXDrive you do have to keep up the maintanance, but mine has been really good, only once in 6 years did it leave me on the side of the road, that was a flat tyre.
I have a 2010 bmw m6 with 53k miles. Only put 1k miles on it and recieved it with a few issues when bought. Replaced the battery as it was drained and was old, 1 coil went out on me, the power steering fluid and now have an engine light for pre-cat 02 sensors (next up on my list). My upcoming maintenance is differential fluid since im getting grinding noises then around 70k need rod bearings, vanos line as well as trans gear/smg oil. I would LOVE if you made a maintenance sheet on what you recommend yearly/bi yearly....
Thanks for sharing. Those items are nothing for a 14 year old car. Looks like you have a good plan moving forwards. Nice idea about the maintenance sheet, I might make a video on it
@@MTechGuyplease do 🙏
Happy owner of a 2006 M5.
I would say that the maintenance cost and fuel cost of this thing make me love my EV 😅
There’s no getting around the fuel cost, that’s for sure.
An EV doesn’t scream like the S85 V10 though!
@@MTechGuy Yes, the last of a kind!
love the S85....and all previous M engines.
I laugh at persons calling the S85 or S65 Sister engine bad....hows the S63's holding up to time? Turbo fart-car with far more expensive problems.
YES, it is more powerful and quicker than any E60, but is it truly an "M" engine?
Hands down, the sound of all n/a "M//" engines better! And with newer, only slushbox....not even a dual-clutch.
Welcome to the Lazy M5....for those who do not drive!
lol!
had my m5 almost a year now , i have replaced myself the fuel filter and fuel pumps , new injectors , rod bearings new pcv valves , new engine mounts 3 oil changes , diff and gearbox oils and smg fluid and updated the ccc to cic , lots of really usefull information from yourself m tech guy . loving the car done just under 5k miles since i bought it and just doing another oil change and oil test
That’s awesome! How do you like the CIC?
@@MTechGuyi love it , better screen and bluetooth connection and much better maps and faster acces
So far the only time mine has 'failed to proceed' and needed towing home was ~400Klm after I changed the fuel filter.
Took a while to debug, but I found the feed line from the pump had jumped off the new Bosch filter's inlet barb... giving me 10 x injector fuel pressure errors in ISTA-D :-\
Thanks for sharing. Interesting, the fuel filter is a fiddly job. Good job finding the fault
@@MTechGuy Fiddly alright. If doing it twice in a week wasn't hassle enough, when it let go I had just filled it to the brim with fuel, 15mins earlier :-\
@@asecret900 Haha, of course, it’s always the way 😬
Wow! I thought my M6 fuel economy was bad at ~19.6l/100km and I beat on it whenever I take it out. Maybe fuel type difference between Canadian 94oct pump gas vs New Zealand's?
That’s km’s/L I’m quoting here. I run it on 98 RON octane
Hey mate .. curious your thoughts on the smg shifter knob and if there is a way to lube the ball or mechanism in which it moves inside .. thanks
I would remove it and give the mechanism a clean under the shifter boot
@@MTechGuy well I will have to wait for the master Mtech guy to make a video on that... 😉
Do you think the original 18 year old alternator need to be replaced even when it works fine at the moment?
I have a 2006 BMW M5 V10- third gear engine malfunction and I think it might be the alternator that is part of this problem. Thank you.
ISTA has a code 002788 and code 0027D0
DME: Fuel pressure, setpoint/actual-valve comparison at maximum pressure
DME: Fuel-pressure control adaptation
If the alternator tests OK it’ll be fine at that age. When the regulator starts to die it will come up on the dash with a charging/battery faults in most cases.
Sounds like you may have issues with your fuel pump/fuel pump module/fuel pressure sensor?
I replaced the fuel sensor, the canister and the fuel filter and it didnt solve it, i read someone on m5board said they eventually found that the pump wasnt connected to ground and it solved the problem and others said alternator can also cause this problem, you can see 20 second video in my channel how third gear acceleration causes this malfunction
Did you make a video of the pinion seal work for the diff?
No video for that one
@@MTechGuy ahh bummer. I have a leaky rear diff. Going ti clean the vent and see if that helps. Any resources you'd recommend for DIY if I end up having to do the pinion seal?
Ever thought of manual swapping it?
No, I really like the SMG, and prefer it over a normal manual in these cars
@@MTechGuy fair enough. What about a dtc swap?
@@AbdulHaq11901 Rather have a regular manual over a DCT, but SMG III is by far my favourite
@@MTechGuy interesting. Because im looking to get a m5 soon and was thinking to get it manual swapped right away
@@MTechGuywhy is it favorite over DCT?
