Lil trick, turn distortion on, but only turn the tone knob and level pots, leave distortion at 0 - this will cut a bit of the metallic elements of the hats and cymbal to more of the og sound.
Wow! Very slick production, nicely done! I too was a Korg Electribe ER-1 owner back in the mid/late 00s. Wish I still had it now. It was nasty where the RD-6 is smooth. But sometimes you need a bit of both! Couple of things you didn't mention in your video: (this one might be obvious for drum machine users) the CH and OH are on a choke group - that is, if a CH is triggered whilst the OH is still sounding then the OH gets cut short. This is to mimic how a hi-hat works on a real drum kit. Also, playing the CH and OH together on the same step produces a different sound - a harder, slightly longer CH. And FYI, the original TR-606 (oh, how I wish I still mine) didn't have a clap, so the CP sound on the RD-6 (taken from the Boss DR-110) is a very welcome addition.
Nice jam @ 4:00 . . . It sounds like great drum machine for ambient, synthy music that you mentioned. The jam you made would be great to listen to as you cruise down the highway at midnight. I just ordered this unit and see that the stock is starting to thin out across the USA. I figure the window might be closing to pick one up like some other Behringer clones that are now discontinued. I like that the bass drum is not overbearing, the snares are not too punchy, the cymbals are crisp, metallic and pleasantly synthetic. The DR 110 claps cut through the mix, but don’t sound cheesy, like many 80’s claps.
Thank youj so much for this review of the RD-6! I have the Behringer TD-3AM, as well as a Donner B1. I am not a pro musician, but I have been living and breathing goa trance since the late 1990's. I am an old school hardware guy, just can't wrap my head around these VST's and software programs out there. I want to touch and feel what I'm using to make my music! The only thing I really want is a decent drum machine, easy to program, and will easily interface with what I have now. I'm thinking the RD-6 will work fine for me, thanks for your review!
For the quality of this video, I was absolutely shocked to see you hadn't passed 1,000 subscribers yet. I've got one of these arriving today and it's also my first drum machine in quite a while. I think I was most drawn to the noisy open hats and the clap. I can just about guarantee I'll eventually get behringer's 808, but I'm not convinced that this one would get any less use as a result.
Would this be a good budget drum machine for post punk? I am really looking for a darker, flatter tone. If I am not mistaken, you can plug guitar pedals into this?
Yes, you can connect guitar pedals to the RD-6 in fact, to give you some good news, The Sisters of Mercy used the original machine (TR-606) to make their song "Alice" and it sounds great. Also, the group Noise Rock Big Black used the original for some EPs they made, so this replica of the original will be very useful for you to do Post-Punk.
Your “quick context demo mix” won a like from me and a subscription. Sounds great and your video looks awesome, I look forward to hearing more of your opinion. Respect. Nice one, Sir.
I can confirm that yes, this happens with the RD. It's actually insane the amount of variation in groove you can create in just the hihat track, by mixing together closed, open, closed and open together, closed after the open, accents on steps, and the occasional cymbal.
Love your video....Just a question...would you tell me how you make the bass line in the demo? Love that sound as well. Please let me know if you can...Best regards.
Sub'd! Great review. I'm looking at one of these just for the trigger out. But after listening to it, it's got a great little minimal sounding kit. And they're soooo cheap. Thanks!
I did buy a RD 6 which was great however i later sold it it once i was able to buy the RD 9 as i like it's Kick, Snare /clap & hi hats over the RD 6. Otherwise its a good unit the RD 6.
having used the roland with a similar lay out for years I was interested to see what preloaded sequences it had not just the loading capability. Sometimes if your live you need to punch in something quick that will suffice. sorry that it wasn't shown. but i do like the layout. may wait to see one the flesh. Thanks for the view. Stay safe. db
I really appreciate how you explain, and then demonstrate each of the sounds/functions of this cool little drum machine (I think that you’ve convinced me that I really, really want one) BTW, I, too have used (actually still own) an ER-1 (ES-1, as well) Totally agree with BigCrashTrapLoop who said that there is most definitely a place (sonically) for both! AWESOME demonstration video- You did such an awesome demonstration video that I absolutely had to hit that “subscribe” button! Looking forward to you getting 1,000 subscribers so that I can (and WILL) win that beautiful black Behringer from you! Until hearing from you with the wonderful news that I was the lucky one, be well, my Friend! Hugh
i got the rd6 last week,i got a volca sample a couple of days ago, instantly regretted getting the rd6,the korg has 10 sounds with loads of variations and you can load your own samples!
I have the Sample but it really distracts me with all the parameters it has. I much prefer something simpler, even the cheesy rhythm machine on my old home organ. With that I can just kick it on and noodle for like an hour. It all comes down to how focused you are I suppose. (Or buy both, they're cheap.)
You did not explain track mode or how to chain patterns. A complete waste of time watching this. Find one by someone willing to explain such things as sync in/out and what triggers and inputs actually do.

Great tip mate.
@@AtticusBleep this cuts the main gain stage across the other instruments too, so the indy outs are your friends in this case.
Kinda like big black sound?
Dzięki za przetłumaczenie 👍
RD-6 high hats always end up in my jams. They cut though a mix like a dream.

What a great video. Quality of picture and sound was top notch and you presented yourself perfectly. I thoroughly enjoyed this!
Thanks appreciate the feedback!

The black one looks sweet.
This unit sounds really good. Specially the tuning of the hi hats that is much lower than other models

Did they recreate the old trick where an open hi hat on the same place as a closed make a third, kind of choked hat sound?!
I can confirm that yes, this happens with the RD. It's actually insane the amount of variation in groove you can create in just the hihat track, by mixing together closed, open, closed and open together, closed after the open, accents on steps, and the occasional cymbal.
Yes RD-6 is a analogue copy of 606 with modern improvements so if some trick work on 606 generators, its gonna work on RD 6
why did you say behringer TD6 ?
I came to the comments for this

Hiya from Manchester new supporter to your channel. I got the yellow one today off amazon 💛
Can I connect the rd6 directly to the speaker?
Yes just use MIX out Jack
Great demo...gives a clear idea of the machine.
Brilliant video thanks it would be cool if you could do a video showing how to connect it to synths with CV. Thanks again
nice rundown of this great clone by #behringer - super quality video too nice one
Thanks buddy!
The short track made me sub... good review and photography.
Thanks for this review, cool lil machine
Great job on the review!!
I guess, I'm no 1000. Gratulation! 👍

I'd like to know if it's possible to save pattern & chain ("songs") over MIDI, audio (old way, like cassette) or USB?
There already bulid in memory and it can hold max to 16 patterns (watch "RD-6 on depth tutorial" to know how)
Thanks, I am going to buy it, i am convinced.
Great video! Keep it up!
if you end up giving this one away, will you replace it with the same or something else?
I really like the demo song at the beginning
Great review. You Sir are a professional.
I could hear the sound very well.
What is your a/d converter or audio interface?
Just a Focusrite 18i20

Check out Last Step if you want to hear the 606 sound used to incredible effect
I had the ER1 a few years ago. I sold it, I didn't really care for the workflow.
Just found your channel, I subscribed!!
who is the flag for?
This costs like 7 or 10 usd less than a volca drums here
Does this “drum” machine have any actual drum sounds?
It's an analog machine, so no. That's what people said about the Roland 808 when it was released.
@@ryanedwardmusic hahah that and the tb-303, was considered a failure until someone dropped some acid house
3:32 nice!

Not at all . i have the two machines
Not better but sometime you dont want the power of the 808 and thats where the RD6 works better for general electronic music.

yeah, they're kind of 2 different things, one is a drum machine, one is a sampler that can be made into a drum machine.
Do not even think about buying TAMA or other drum stations! Some idiots made them big, unsyncable and only 8 sounds.

It is a great beginners drum machine.. but after about 6 or 7 months you will want to move on from it

I'll never understand why people use toy speakers. Why not make it slap with a bass, drum or keyboard speaker
Sounds mushy
Too much talking. People love to hear themselves talk. Just play the gear and show us what kind of rhythm programming skills you have.
The Roland TR-06 is so much better...
Not better for analog it isnt.
