I am visiting Vienna on my birthday next week and am very much looking forward to it. The trams appeal to me but I wouldn't have a clue as to how to use them and where to get on/off so I'll probably just walk everywhere.
The fact that you said "but it's your job to validate it". Bruh, you can literally choose an option which says "validate now", which ironically you've shown
it's a system of suburban trains covering the outskirts and surrounding region (up to about a 50km radius from the city center), and operating at fairly short intervals (usually at least every 30 minutes on most lines). Basically a metro, but going a bit farther outside the city. Also note that all trains (S-Bahn, Regional/Regional-Express, InterCity/RailJet, ...) are part of the Vienna fare system, i.e. your ticket is also valid in them within the city limits = the core fare zone ("Kernzone").
