My favorite way to get around Vienna is on the U-Bahn. Last year, I rented an apartment in Herminengasse. The nearest subway station was Schottenring and was only half a block away. Second favorite way of getting around was walking. From that same apartment, the Billa supermarket was a five minute walk. I LOVE Vienna.

Great videos, thank you for all the information and tips!! I am planning a trip to Vienna in March. I want to ask you what is the best way to transport from Vienna to another city or village. Should I rent a car or use the train? A video for other popular destinations like Hallstatt will be really helpful. Keep up the good work!
Depends on where you want to go. Larger cities and even many regional destinations are all easily reachable by train. A day trip to Salzburg, Linz, Eisenstadt or Graz is very easy by train (maximum about 2h30 travel time one way), Innsbruck and Klagenfurt are about 4h-4h30 by train, so that may be a bit tight for a day trip.
Renting a car is a good option, if you also want to explore "off the beaten track".
Since you mentioned Hallstatt: this is generally doable using public transport; there is a train station at the other side of the lake with a boat service directly from there, as well as regional buses.
But please note that it's about a 3h30 to 4h30 trip (one way) from Vienna. Going by car is about the same time (if not even longer, depending on traffic). Many tourists who plan to visit Hallstatt seem to underestimate this! If you leave Vienna in the morning you will basically arrive during "tourist rushhour" in Hallstatt, so if you really want to explore the area (the town itself, the ice cave, ...) getting accommodation locally and staying over night may be the preferable option.

I would recommend you to buy your 7 day ticket online. You can screenshot the ticket afterwards and don't beet mobile data while you're on Vienna.

Update: As of Summer 2023 Westbahn has joined the fare system, so tickets are now also valid in those trains (but for inner-city tickets that's basically irrelevant, as their only connection within the city is between Westbahnhof and Hütteldorf).

The Vienna Pass is only a great offer, if you plan to visit a lot of attractions. The 6day pass is 170€ at the moment, which means that you need to visit around 15-17 attractions to save money 😁
There's a new Wiener Linien 7day transportation pass which is 17,10€, I would recommend you to buy is as well 😎 the connection to the Airport is not included tho.
The Opera walkingtour is included in the Vienna Pass aswell, and they happen to be every day, mostly 2-3 times, you will find the schedule on this website 😁 www.wiener-staatsoper.at/en/staatsoper/guided-tours/

Great vlog! Very informative. If I buy a weekly ticket does it start on the day you buy if validate it at time of purchase?
If you buy a 7 day ticket online, you will be asked for the date you want your ticket to start 😁 so you can buy it in advance. You don't need to validate it if you buy it online

Going to Vienna next week for 5 days, still trying to figure out if we should buy the 7-day tickets or the 72-hour tickets. I am a bit confused as what the 72-hour ticket would offer as far as attractions. Could you please help, thanks!

So if you're in Vienna for a week, I would recommend you to buy a 7 days Ticket - it is 17,10€ and is as expensive as the 72h ticket 😁
You can use this ticket for all kinds of Subway, S-Bahn, Bus, Tram except CAT, Westbahn and tourism offers.
I would recommend you to buy your ticket online in advance, you can do it either in the Wien Mobil app or online on the wiener linien homepage 😎 you're welcome!

Hi, thanks for the video, so basicaly If I want to go to the Vienna center from the airport I should by a ticket from the ticket machine and not from mobile app, as the airport is not part of the Viena city zone?
No you can buy it online! But make sure it’s an Öbb train (either railjet or S7)

Greetings from Singapore. I found your video interesting and informative. many thanks, Question - u mentioned that we can just buy 1 ticket within the city area and use it for bus, tram and underground, is it correct?
Yes, but it’s only one way, so you could travel by bus, change to a tram and again to the underground train until you’re at your destination. To travel back from there you would need to buy a new ticket. Unless you have one of those special tickets you can get, like a 24, 48, or 72 hrs ticket or a ticket valid for a few days. There are various options if you’re staying for more than one day.
The 24hrs ticket will cost you €8 which is much better value buying a single one way ticket that would cost you about € 2.50 for a one way ride, whereas you can have an unlimited number of rides from the moment you validate that 24hr ticket at the validation box in every tram, bus, and sometimes trains. If you need to take the underground train make sure to validate the ticket at the gates of the station, before boarding the U-Bahn.

Hey there! Thanks for the feedback 👍🏻 so in generell there is only one Zone and it works in the whole city! But for those Places you don’t really need a tram or any other transportation! Just walk it is not that far 😉
From your hotel go to u1 Hauptbahnhof/Südtirolerplatz and from there it is only a couple of stations to Stephansplatz! Leave the metro there and walk from there! You will find everything 👍🏻 the first district is very walkable!

The tickets from the ÖBB (national railway) ticket machines are already validated!
If you bought your ticket online at the website of Wiener Linien, or at the App Wie Mobil, they are also already validated!
Only if you buy a paper ticket inside the metro station, at a ticket machine, you need to validate them at those blue validator machines. I dont really understand i saw a weekly pass that is valid from Monday to Monday and a 7 Days tickets (that s new, i think). Weekly and 7 Days are the same? Or 7 Days really means from the date i wannt 7 days. Because if you stay 4-5 days is the same price for 72 Hours and 7 Days... but i don t understand if is really 7 days starting from the date i selected. Can you explain, please? Thank you.
The weekly pass is for a _calendar_ week, i.e. Monday to Monday.
The 7-day ticket is more flexible and starts counting at the day you validate it.

Children below 6 years are free. From 6-15 years they can use a reduced-fare ticket.
I am old and can’t walk very much. You advise not to use taxis or the fiakers. How close are the tram and Ubahns to major sights, I.e. Museum Quartier, Judenplatz?
In that case Taxi or Uber could be helpful but the centre is really walkable!

Es gibt da sicher `ne persönliche Vorgeschichte.
Der CAT ist einfach gesagt eine Touristenfalle und es gibt in ganz Wien nur eine einzige Zusteigemöglichkeit. Es gibt weit günstigere Wege um zum Flughafen zu kommen. Alle 30 Minuten fährt eine S-Bahn zum Flughafen und es gibt auch noch die Airportbusse, welche ebenfalls günstiger sind.

Der einzige Mehrwert des CAT ist dass man das Gepäck schon in Wien einchecken kann (allerdings auch nicht für alle Fluglinien). Das bringt aber nur auf der Fahrt _zum_ Flughafen etwas.
Für die Strecke vom Flughafen in die Stadt ist er heiße 3 Minuten schneller als der REX - ob das den mehr als dreifachen Preis rechtfertigt überlasse ich mal jedem selbst. Insbesondere weil man dann immer noch ein Ticket für Wien selbst braucht, dass man bei der S-Bahn bereits hat.
In der Praxis ist der CAT aber meist sogar langsamer, wenn man nicht gerade im Hilton wohnt (ob man dann aber überhaupt mit der Bahn fährt...), da man in Wien-Mitte dann ja meist sowieso in ein andere Verkehrsmittel umsteigt (die anderen Züge halten auch noch an weiteren Stationen im Stadtgebiet, wodurch man mit denen in aller Regel näher am Fahrtziel umsteigen kann).

There are Ticket offices/Information desks at the major stations, just like in basically every other city.
Apart from that the ticket machines should be quite self-explanatory, and also the names of the tickets are quite straight-forward. What exactly was hard to understand for you?
