Part of the reason it is also staying afloat (although a very small part), is the fact the team colors are hard to confuse for the background, different from the other team, and the fact the colors are mostly located around center mass, giving you a easier view of the colors, you can also put character recognition in the same category as this, because without these two things, tf2 wouldn’t be as fun in Scout looked the same as heavy, pyro, spy, etc.
Yeah, TF2 went through multiple phases in its development before they finally landed on the look the final game has. it originally started life looking more like a generic army game, and then was originally going to be a humans VS aliens type game, before finally settling on the 1960s inspired timeperiod for the game. Team Fortress 1 was actually a lot military-like designs, with the 9 classes of the first game all looking and sounding like military soldiers. (Canonically, the TF1 team does exist within the same universe as TF2, and have since received an overhaul to have their own unique appearances.)

This artstyle is just the best to keep it alive, “the windwaker effect” as I call it, is If a game is so stylistically distinct that it can’t be distinguished if it was made in the early 2000s or just last week, and that’s definitely the best way to keep a game relevant

I think part of its charm is wrapped up in the semi-cartoon models, animations, & physics. There aren't many Co-op/FPS/MMO that don't take themselves seriously but TF2 combines enough absurdity between mechanics/playstyle with the nonsensical whimsy of the game world/lore & characterizations to make it enjoyable. How many Call of Duty servers, for example, provide the lobbies & game maps an opportunity for players to dance a conga, for example?
TF2 is less like a time bomb ticking off its countdown than it is a running joke waiting for a new punchline to fall into place.

Since you are playing tf2 now, if you want, I have duplicates of all of the unlockable weapons you can just have if you want em. I just need your steam acct link and I can send em over, no problamo (except for the achievement unlockables, those milestones are fun to hit, and for the most part, the weapons you get from them are worth the effort you put in, so I don't wanna ruin that grind for you.)

i dunno if it's present in overwatch, but have you looked up the voicelines for when you cause a domination? the characters really don't hold back the insults and my personal favs are absolutely the sniper and spy with them both having the most cruel ones! (you dominate someone by killing that player 4 times without dying to that player yourself and lasts until that player gets one revenge kill on you. yes the player can see that you're dominating him as there's an icon over your head for that player.)
