    “They didn’t invent WASD gameplay”
Actually, they kinda did. It was the release of Half Life that standardised the idea of First-Person Shooters using WASD for movement, before then, it was all over the place what was used for movement controls. Now they WEREN'T the FIRST to use it by a long shot, but it's Half Life's success that allowed it to become standardised.
Half-Life was also one of the first games to use mouselook as opposed to the directional keys. Granted, Team Fortress started out as a Quake 1 mod before being ported to GoldSource as a Half Life mod, it still counts.
Edit; I need to stress that I am NOT claiming that Half Life was THE first to do either of these things, because some people apparently can't read properly.

Although half life was a big boy at the wasd thing (by making controls orbit around it), it was mostly quake that introduced that movement mechanic based off 1 guy that played doom with the wasd key setup, and everyone started using like him, got popular, then quake added as the default to their game (If I'm correct(

@@Komradvsky Note that I said 'ONE of the first, not THE first'
DooM didn't have mouselook, you could use a mouse to turn left and right, but that's not the same thing. You can't look up or down freely in that. Not without mods that came out long after.
As for Quake, it was a bit more in the niche side of things in terms of shooters. Half Life's popularity is what helped cement a lot of these modern trends. Other games may have done it first, that doesn't mean they were the ones who made it the go-to thing.
Don't think I'm disparaging Quake or its importance to gaming. GoldSrc is based on the Quake 1 Engine, after all. Half-Life and its stellar success compared to its predecessors is what helped bring these things to the forefront of gaming. In much the same way Halo Combat Evolved did three years later with its own contributions.

About two weeks ago I celebrated my 10 year anniversary of TF2. One of my favorite things is how the game draws in new people who go forward to learn more and even make content. The community continues to live on despite the lack of Valve's involvement.
You're a part of the reason TF2 is still relavent. Every new fan, every new piece of content; is another push to keep the flame going. So thank you.

Came out 14 years ago and had 8 years of development, part of which was because there were some older iterations of the game that were axed before the devs settled on what have today.
0:30 The difference is passion and the devs being allowed to express that passion in their work. 'Triple A' nowadays doesn't indicate quality but rather backing of large game corporations and publishers.

I always find it interesting how many games try to copy TF2's gameplay mechanics but ultimately they miss the mark. Overwatch, for example, was open about TF2 being an inspiration to its design following its release. I've played a lot of both games (not really that good in either), and I've found an emotional difference in myself during them.
In TF2, I'm never really upset that I died because I have a functionally identical weapon somewhere in my backpack to whatever killed me. There wasn't some magical button press that stacked the odds against me. When I die, I can just accept that yeah, I have fewer hours in the game than most players who've had the game as long as I have. I'm naturally going to make mistakes and die from them.
In Overwatch, I actually find myself offended at a lot of my deaths. I main support, usually Ana and Mercy, and it is fun to play like that. Yet, here's the thing: I'll die in ways that were genuinely not my fault with nothing I can do about it. A Doomfist can press Q to target support (because that's the smartest way to use it) and kill the most active support player without even needing to be in line of sight. You can't always dodge that situation because the target circle moves faster than the realistically expected movement speed. A Soldier 76 can press Q behind you, and the literal aimbot ability can kill you before you can whip your mouse around and kill him as a support because the weapons aren't really suited for direct combat. A Tracer can teleport behind you, press Q to place an instant kill bomb on you, and press E to teleport back while also healing the small amount of damage she may have took in the split second she was there.
In short, TF2 doesn't grant extraordinary abilities to single button presses that can override the standard capability of the mercenaries. Backstabs require timing and smart positioning. Ubercharge meters reset to 0 every death. A Sandvich requires you to stand still to consume. Rocket and sticky jumps are more than an ability button with a cooldown, they are actual practicable skills. Sure, Overwatch doesn't sell stronger weapons or abilities for money, but certain heroes are given staggeringly powerful abilities with no practice or nuance required to use them, especially in the DPS hero lineup.

      @blehmeh9889 2 роки тому +6

@@benismann I always loved TF2's approach to weapon balancing. "Tough love", I'll call it. Sure, when I was a noob in 2012, I got absolutely roasted because I happened to "Find" a weapon right after completing the tutorial, trying to use it, and dying horribly because the weapon was a downgrade for my relative skill level. Like, for instance, I picked the "Loch N Load" as soon as I got it and got myself killed by the enemy again and again because while I was excited to read the stats about grenades traveling faster and doing more damage, I didn't think so much over the part where it said "Grenades shatter on impact with a surface". "Ahh, I'll just hit 'em", I thought to myself, never having played Quake before. I didn't hit a single enemy with that grenade launcher, due to the fact that I had very poor aim and next to no game sense. I later realized that if I had used the stock grenade launcher, my grenades would at least land on the floor near my enemies when I missed. That experience was tough, but it taught me to consider all of my options, even the seemingly boring and standard ones, and it also taught me that when I saw someone kill me using some badass gun, that the seemingly badass unobtanium weapon they were waving around actually had some flaws of it's own compared to what I was using, and that the real badass was the person holding the gun. It didn't matter so much what I had as I eventually realized I can just get better at the game, and likewise I could research the flaws of the weapons to see if I could use them to get the upper hand on enemies who were using those weapons.

TF2 being able to be enjoyed by new players is such a nice thing. I haven’t touched TF2 in years, maybe since 2017 tbh (I would go on and play some rounds with bots in the past years, but it would last like a few minutes before I would leave). It wasn’t until I convinced my friend to try it out where I remembered how fun it was to actually play with other people, and they had lots of fun too. First day I taught them basics, we had some duels and they learned quickly. Not long ago we played with some completely strangers who were totally chill and they had the highest kill count, I was hella proud of them.
I’m excited to continue playing with them

If you look at it, the movements and shootings sounds similar of that from other fps games, but there's a drastically different thing about it.
For once, you actually can DODGE with Wasd, in other games it's either Stand still and shoot for more accuracy or run away in curve to avoid imminent death or just leave the moment you peek around corner.
But in Tf2, you always have the chance to win, so as the other game but in tf2 it's more forgiving and rewarding when you fought back.
You can see the gigantic hitboxes of enemies and focus on their torso only for maximum damage. However, in most fps games we focus on the HEAD which is quite frustrating and satisfying if you did it, but Tf2 managed to do it without needing any"Critical point" .

Fun Fact: Team Fortress originally started out as a mod for Quake 1 (Seriously look it up). Soldier even has a rocket launcher called "The Original" which it's design is based on the Rocket Launcher from Quake. This is also why the Launcher's placement is in the middle, mimicking the weapon placement of classic shooters from the 90s.

@@dragonandavatarfan8865 My pov is that Free is a thin line to balance on for making a good game. For TF2 free is a bad thing because it makes the game TOO accessible witch was a good thing 8 years ago when the game wanted more players. but the game now has... not an over abundance of players but something similar. With all these people come the increased chance at bad apples. combine that with no actual employs working on the game and you get a recipe for mold growth.
Contrast that with DRG where it is a payed game that means that not just anyone can hop on do a little trolling and peace out never to be seen agene. But you can gerente that every one in that community pay'd up at least $15-30. that means no alt accounts (and the save game function makes alts completely irrelevant). Pay to play also serves as a form of quality control.
But I that doesn't mean I'm suggesting that tf2 go back to $20. No. I'd just think TF2 would be better with a priced then with out, (it could literally be $1 for all I care).
ok that was a lot. so here's the short version: Bot hosters have an economic incentive for hosting. if you take away or harshly hinder their potential gains then they'll stop mass hosting. (I hope that made some sense)

@@rsenjoyer7706 I guess i see your point but i also believe that a lot of f2p players in tf2 are probably kids and teenagers from third-world countries who can't have part-time jobs and can only start making money when they finally have a job and until then their parents will never spend a single cent on their kids 'evil video games'. I know it might feel like a very specific situation but trusts me a lot of people in third world countries go through this whole exact thing, including me and my friends, which is why i am generally a bit more open towards free to play because otherwise i probably wouldn't have gave a chance to a great game like tf2.

I only knew about the game because someone in the ACM office at UIC in 2007 was playing. I guess I was a lucky computer engineering student. I was just thinking the other day how no game seems to be as legendary as TF2 [Valve] except maybe StarCraft [Blizzard] and Minecraft [Marcus Persson] for me, there seems to be something so beautiful and artistic about the style of the setting of the game. The levels feel realistic, like you are actually out in some abandoned warehouses in the middle of the desert or some undercover military base out west. There is a nostalgia to the outdoors nature of the game only that seems equivalent to the Simpsons forest, which is like the forests in Oregon near Portland.

I'm waiting for soft matchmaking to be added before coming back, but even then i can't deny TF2 is THE best free to play game out there
This is how you keep a free game successful for so long, you ensure that the gameplay is good and THEN you try to incorporate monetization without touching the gameplay

There's a saying that I like from the Great Bricky:
"Graphics are temporary, art direction is forever."
You can have the most stunning, graphical fidelity ever in a video game, but unless it leaves a mark on you, or the direction isn't good, it's ultimately forgetable.
But games like TF2, titanfall 2, Dishonored, bioshock, Halo, the witcher, all have stylistic choices that help immortalize them in our memories because their Art Direction sticks to us.
Halo for it's stunning sci-fi setting, Bioshock for it's underground civilization and art-deco theme, dishonored for its grungy setting, and unique powers. The Witcher for its branching stories, and beautiful world design.
TF2 is no different, and what sets itself apart from the myriad of FPS's is it's art direction, the stylization of certain archetypes in the genre. The multiple different playstyles and skill levels. The gut-busting humor it has, and comical levels of violence. All these wrapped up together give TF2 a unique art direction that makes people keep going back to it, because its fun.

I kinda disagree on making all games more accessible. Like, I’d hate for something like, stalker, to get easier purely to try and bring in a wider audience because stalker is *meant* to be difficult. If people can’t have fun with the type of game stalker is, maybe it just isn’t for them.

    • @freedantheeternal

That's the problem these days: Too many people think everything should be made for them, and if they don't like it, it's bad.
Goes right up with the mentality of people who defend terrible design because "games are art, and muh artistic integrity," except when it's something those very people don't like.
Though I also don't think Valve deserves all the praise they get. The fanboyism that loves to ignore that Gabe Newell was the originator of the "no one wants single-player games anymore" mentality that EA and others are now pushing, as well as being the ones who mainstreamed lootboxes long before EA got so predatory with them.

Because they have character, they feel completed and they don’t feel like a cheep cash grab, take the new Star Wars battlefront or even battlefield 2042 where they just felt incomplete and needed several patches before the game was even playable vs something like BF4 where despite its graphics the game felt complete and it gave you what you expected ie a game that works and anything else afterwards are just secondary to the core gameplay such as expansions, and not only that but TF2 has always had a passionate and dedicated player base as well as fun and lovable and memorable characters such as heavy or the posh and upper class spy or the loudmouth Boston scout, and what many games tend to become is stale over time and personally most games put graphics and money over actual playability for example look at Garry’s mod a game that’s over a decade old and yet due to its unique style and nature allows people to play and create their own games and mods

I definitivly wouldnt say ONLY VIDEOGAME, but its clearly one of the best well made ones, Portal 1 and 2, Outlast 1, Half life series, Minecraft and Terraria. IMO all of those are at the top, as i consider them well worked around their own difficulties, for example, i find outlast one of the funniest games to play despite it being HORROR based, as it has so much replayability value, you can either hide, run, or just be a general asshole in that game. Sandbox games such as Terraria and Minecraft are just incredible, you can either build a cozy looking house, or an absolute beast of a gigantic dirt shack, you're the own to choose.
By all of this i mean, generally the older the game is, the better it feels to play, because if a game is a couple years old and still is known today, that makes the game atleast good :)

It's kinda weird that you think that Elden ring is for the tryhards when it is probably the most accessible game FromSoft ever made. You can go full sweety gamer mode by using either strength or paladin build and refusing to use mimic or summons just out of sheer principle or stubbornness OR you could go full mage, grind, find OP weapons, use mimics and summons and make the game laughably easy. I highly recommend The Act Man's video on elden ring titled "Why is Elden Ring so Successful".
