Solid advice! Getting caught up in perfecting the details is a stumbling block for many artists, myself included. Sometimes less is more. Thanks Coach!
I took a trip to Big Bear, Ca. last week and found myself taking pics of rocks. People driving by had to be thinking ‘that guy is weird’! Thanks coach.
Greetings and love from Saudi Arabia, I'm an artist myself but I have learned so much from you, I started applying your advice on squinting the eyes but in my case I just remove my eye glasses and there it is, the picture is blurry and I'm able to see blocks of shapes and tones to start with before I put my glasses back on. Thank you so much for all the wonderful advices you share with the world.
Haha. I liked the joke with " the rocks immerge". Best example of how to do them I saw in Edward Munck painting. Another great one is early Kandinsky, possibly from his stay in Murnau, Germany. Basicaly is pretty much what you do here, just a diferent style, line, brushwork and choice of color mixes.
Perfect intro.. 😂 I'm in the middle of painting ocean and wanted to put is seashore with a lighthouse on the corner. I got the ocean in sky and clouds easy; but to quote the teacher of the video.. "How do you paint all those rocks?!"
Here is yet another good tip: Or, just don't paint rocks. lol I really enjoyed this video, very helpful. I love painting red rock formations in the SW like Sedona and also St. George, Utah.
Really great tutorial Chris! This is a great reminder to keep things in a hierarchy of visual importance. Very useful! And you did a fantastic painting man! Great job 👍
I just started a rocky seashore painting and it looks like a paint by number kit! I am so happy to have found your UA-cam video. It will make a huge difference in my painting. I also like your loose painting style. Thank you so much for your help.
I love how you casually drop significant facts like “remember as you paint into the distance the first colours to dip out are red and yellow, so you’ll see mostly cooler tones like blue.”
Hey, Chris! Thanks for posting your videos🙂👍 It would be interesting to see you paint a nocturnal painting, with focus on the moon and the moonlit clouds. Not an easy task to make that moon "pop" and getting the cloud values right. Keep up the great work, Chris. Greetings from Norway Eleo
So I am old at 42 while rockin’ my Facebook? Gasp! Just kidding. You had to know someone would give you a hard time about that. 😂 Seriously, the video was good advice as usual. Your videos are helping me transition from watercolor to oil. I appreciate them a lot.
I just realized I was listening to one of your other videos (from 2 months ago) about social media and commented on this one instead. Apparently I am already senile too. 😂 The dangers of binge watching UA-cam.
Thanks for another informative video Chris. I always hate painting rocks (and trees for that matter), but you did a fantastic job here. I guess one question I have is about the shadows. They seem to have different values within themselves which I think is hard to portray. Any advice?
check out the full tutorial on Patreon lol It's all about minding your values. There are highlights within the shadows but you have to make sure they are lighter but not too light that they don't read as in the shadows. This is why blocking out the the major values first makes it easier because as you work those lighter values in the shadows you know how far you can push them
squint, drawing a not single rock, get rid of detail, see light and dark, blue, dark sienna, mapping the dark shapes, find the darkest dark in the rocks, general shape of the rocks, identify, darkest light, dark to light, shadow and highlights, back and fort,
It does help eliminate details! I find squinting still helps to find values though, something about seeing through eyelashes grays down what you see and helps with the chroma lie:)
Hi, just saw your video (great tips, some of which I already use!), but I was wondering if you could be more specific in the brushes from Rosemary Co. you use. The link just goes to their home page. I'm always in search of good flat brushes!
I enjoyed your video, but i couldn’t understand the link to your full version. I have been trying to paint rocks for the last two years. My friends make fun at me. They call me the “rock lady”. Every now and then I get it right, but I sure would like to see your full version. Can you send me the link. Thanks L Rocamboli
My oil paint gets sticky and dry. I cant get any brush details and dont know whats wrong. I use walnut or linseed oil and wipe my canvas then paint over it. What do you suggest i do? Thanks
You are awesome. From your delivery to your technique, you are an awesome teacher. I look forward to your videos. Thank you.
Thanks! Glad you liked it!

You're such a great and funny teacher Chris. Always enjoy seeing a new upload from you!

Great video I am on my way to paint ROCKS at the beach and now I feel SO CONFIDENT.
I took a trip to Big Bear, Ca. last week and found myself taking pics of rocks. People driving by had to be thinking ‘that guy is weird’! Thanks coach.
It's all the heavy metals in the paint. As long as you don't cut your ear off you'll be ok.

Yet another way to get stoned! Thank You, Chris!

Wondering how you decipher if you will need cad red or QM.

Hi Chris. I have a question. do you have any tips on picking a frame for a finished painting? Cheers
"How do you paint all those rocks!!!!!????? I just want to watch a never-ending loop of that...
rocks. one of the very few things i am good at. I'm near sighted so i just take my glasses off.
It does help eliminate details! I find squinting still helps to find values though, something about seeing through eyelashes grays down what you see and helps with the chroma lie:)
I’m in that struggle painting Peggy’s cove with soooo many shades and tones 🤦🏻♀️
'You don't want curved strokes because rocks aren't curved' 7:42. I see many curves in the finished painting.
"When painting lights start with the darkest light"
for the squinting tip you might try a few beers
It is funny but when I squint my eyes I see more detailed. Really. :) I do see less detailed when I close 1 eye and look with the other.

I'm British and that was actually a good British accent. Bit posher than I talk though lol
LoVe the accent. LOL!

Music at 2:10?
I say old chap!!!
Lmfao the ending hahahaha
Rule #1 and #2, I don’t have to squint! I just take my glasses off.
Me... scribble and polish to rock.
Horrible!
Thanks!
Huh? Could you be more specific? Because I don’t know see anything horrible here.
