  • Hi I had a Toyota Hilux to look at, it wouldn't rev over 2000-2500 rpm, and had no power, the truck had no OBDII fault codes and no relevant Toyota fault codes.
    I looked at live data to get a clue what to look at.
    The MAF sensor PID was suspect, so that gave me a direction to carry out test, and confirm a fault with the MAF sensor.
    (when a data PID looks suspect, I usually compair OBDII on the scan tool against the vehicle manufacturers data PID.
    I may even compair the reading with another make of scan tool to save time chasing unreliable information.
    I have even found OBDII to be unreliable on one scan tool and fine on another, this was a surprise to me because I thought it was always reliable)

    Mine's a 2002 2.5L 2KD engine and had the same problem. The workshop OBD scan tool cant find any fault code too so I think its the sensor reading to the ECU. Thanks for this helpful video

    Thank you Matt, I’ve recently been having this problem with my 2017 4.0 V6 Hilux.
    I’ve installed a PedalBooster which increases the throttle response, usually only started pulling around 2k rpms due to the delayed response, but is now nippy from the get go.
    Do you think that the throttle opening quicker might affect that sensor, and/or the intake valve not opening quick enough in comparison to the throttle?
    Am going to get my sensor checked, would just like your opinion on that matter.

      Sometimes when the engine control module can't tell me what's wrong, I have to look at the data myself, then test the sensor in the usual way. Thanks for watching

    I have a question please help: I have Toyota Hilux 1KZ TE 3.0cc twin cab and its failing to reach a rev count of at least 2000rpm. On diagnostic machine I ma getting the report engine speed sensor circuit sensor problem. Where do I see this and how do I solve it. I have 2 wire on the right side facing the car just below the throttle body area. Please help. Injector pump perfectly working

    Hi mate, may i ask if what is the reading of a faulty injectors? In my case two of the injector are showing negative readings( -1.5mm3s & -0.4mm3s)

      Hi Jefferson, this doesn't sound too bad, they usually all Ballance out when you add them together. It's only done at idle. When there is a faulty injector it will be a lot of difference. If the milage is high and it is smoking and has refused power it may be worth changing all at the same time. Although I'd check the EGR and intake sent chocked.

    Great job as always matt. Could you see the discrepancy between MAP and BARO KOEO perhaps on the serial data? Its something i always look out for.

      I usually look for both to be the same KOEO or I at least look for the MAP to be the same as the known baro pressure in my location again with ign on.
      I had 101kPa baro and 78kPa MAP so this may be using a separate Baro sensor.
      I have heard scannerdanner say the baro can be the same sensor and will only read the baro with ign on engine off, or at full throttle for a gasoline engine, that makes sense for a non turbo.

      @@mechanicmatt871 yeah matt, baro can be read from a tiny hole in the map sensor (so is separate) or from inside the ecu or even from the maf. So if the map changes wrt baro on start up then it has a separate sensor

    I have opposite problem wth same car..2009 hilux..when im boosting, the check engine light will appear..but when slow down, the light dissapear..My engine had been remap, boost controller installed, put harder spring to my actuator.

    Great diagnostic , thanks for sharing this video matt , i have a problem with a toyota prado 120 1KD engine , this car had this dtc P0045 standing out for something wrong with the turbo actuator circuit , i checked everything using a wiring diagram between the turbo driver and the actuator , everything is fine , the code can't be cleared , when i disconnect the Vane nozzle 2 wires connector , i can Clear the code and the car accelerate better , just can't figure out what's wrong with this car , is it the ECM or what ? Any idea bro ?

      Hi does this have a vacuum solenoid to move the turbo actuator? If it has I would see how much vacuum is there with the solenoid disconnected and with the solenoid activated Incase it is leaking or blocked inside. Thanks for watching

    Hi Mat! Got a Prado with similar issues to what's happened to this Hilux, hard start, when it does start and I accelerate it's just throwing out white smoke and it's a struggle to get to 2,500 RPM... No fault codes... Prior to that when it started fine as soon as I accelerate to drive was just cutting off. Any suggestions?

    I have a question, my vans model is a toyota estima emina 1994 model. Im javing problem with its power sometimes it has power problems lowers its rpm feels like your runningout of diesel in it. Lack of power even when running. Fuel injection and nossle tips been calibrated. Change the fuel filter the fiel pump. Even the intake filter. Can you give any suggestions? What to check? From the philippines here

      I am not familiar with this model of Toyota, I would check that it is not getting air into the fuel line from the tank to the diesel pump. I may block off the fuel pipe at the tank and then see if I can pull a vacuum at the diesel pump end with a hand vacuum pump. Maybe even rig up a small diesel container to supply the high pressure diesel pump and see if things improve that way you would know it's a supply problem. Hope this helps and thanks for watching

    Hey Matt..im facing the exact same issue where my map signal is reading 1.0 v where it is supposed to read 1.3 to 1.6 v..did you figure out what was the exact reason because i already changed my map sensor and the reading is exactly the same.

      I have this problem as well, I saw another video that says it could be the actuator valve that needs to be replaced, which doesn’t allow your intake valve to open up in time/at all.
      I got a PedalBooster installed which increases throttle-response, which leads me to believe that this might be the problem with my Hilux
      I hope you got it sorted out by now🤝

      Hi Manuka, it's really hard to say. A few things could cause that. Although I would start by looking at live data for anything that is out of spec. Do you hear an intake boost leak when you rev the engine? Does the map (boost) pressure increase when reved and return to normal barometric pressure with ign on for your area.
      Could be due injectors. It's hard to say without seeing it. Thanks for watching

      Thanks for watching Esteban, yes I was testing at the MAP on this one, I had a look at the live data to find something that wasn't expected, main thing that stood out was the map although I mentioned the MAF while looking through the lists. Cheers Matt

    I have a hilux 2kd. No power idling under 2000 rpm. I've cleaned fuel line, tank, scv, injector pump but still same problem. Need your help...what do u think? Is the problem

      I don't know without seeing it, it's worth scanning for fault codes and looking at live data for something that stands out. don't forget something unrelated like a binding brake.
      If you were in Cornwall I could take a look at it.

    You have a very nice explanation, if the car is on limp mode and can't exceed speed of 100 km per hour, even if you press the gas pedal to the bottom what can be the problem? And what can be fixed?

      Have you any fault codes with your car, it is always a good place to start, then look at live data for something not doing what it should.

    The check engine light is on and the car has low power.I searched in the computer and the result was the turbo (P1251)
    I changed the turbo and the problem is the same
    When i clear the check some times the car goes well but in other cases it goes with a low power if

      Look at the electric actuator on the turbo, check that it is free to move ok and the wire connector looks good.

    hello. I have a code P0047 in my 2015 hilux and it says "Turbo/Super charger boost control solenoid circuit low" and it has no power and only go to 2k rpm. does anyone know what's the issue and what to replace? please someone help me.

      Hi Elon, if I was looking at a car with that code, I would look to see if the turbo is vacuum controlled or electronically controlled.
      If it's vacuum controlled I would check that I had vacuum supplying the vac solenoid and that it had vacuum coming out of the solenoid when it is activated, you could activate it with something like a power probe.
      I would also check that that amount of vacuum would be enough to move the turbo actuator.
      If that looked okay I would then check the potentiometer was changing its signal voltage whilst the actuator moves, that's if it has a position sensor.
      If it was an electric actuator on the turbo it would be similar tests, just without the vacuum testing. Hopefully this helps.

Mine is electronically controlled and the actuator rod or linkage (idk what it is called) don't move when starting the engine or reving the engine. and the mechanic said that my actuator is bad and needs a new actuator but he only look at it and didn't do tests or anything. But according to my research the actuator rod or linkage seized up sometimes and that's what causes it to have no power. Should I just replace it sir? because it's so expensive.😭

      If you could check that it is getting power and ground at the actuator, or try disconnecting it and see if it is the turbo linkage that is seized or the actuator that is not working. Sometimes I manage to loosen a couple of ten mill headed nuts to create a little free play and see if the linkage on the turbo moves freely and that the actuator rod is able to pivot freely too.

      That may be one of a few things, if you have a scan tool with fault codes and pin data it could point you in a direction, check fuel pressure, air flow, boost pressure, what is the condition of the fuel filter, could be to many possibilities for me to say.

      This ended up getting a new boost pressure sensor (map sensor) it brought the live data closer to what it should be. I had checked the fuel pressure at the rails pressure sensor of camera, I used a scope and it didn't have any drop outs when the car ran badly. I didn't show that because it checked out ok and didn't seem relevent to the video.
      Sometimes I like to check other possible causes of low power to rule it out so the customer doesn't get told they need something else after a new part was replaced.
      Also worth checking the turbo actuator is free to move and you have plenty of boost pressure.
      MAF signal would also be worth checking,
      The checks should be done at 2000 rpm if that's where the low power is.
      This is not possible to do a leak off on the injectors because they are in the head and only has one return from the head.
      Although if it suddenly has a large leak of at higher rpm it could indicate that you have an injector fault.
      A very quick and easy test would be a smoke test through the air intake to check for leaks.
      It's usually a mechanical fault when there is no fault codes.

      The MAF fixed this one. Although I have noticed on some scan tools there is a difference in map pressure between obd data and vehicle manufacture data. Thought it was worth mentioning. Thanks for watching

    What a legend, too bad I found out the hard way, 5g later found out it's the map sensor 😅 and the sensors don't like deep water, I don't know who built the kun26 but a 3L/5L turbo diesel was a better idea.

      Try checking for fault codes to see what you get, if no codes have some one take it for a drive with a scan tool and watch fuel pressure, boost pressure (map) , air flow, turbo position. See what is dropping out.

    Hey... So my dad has this Hilux pick up which is 2kd he got it for a cheap price in kenya ,it had a couple of issue it wasn't actually starting and didn't have injectors, ecu and many other parts, so he did manage to restore it but the mechanics ripped him off and didn't complete the job, so currently it starts well but it has no power when accelerated it starts knocking for a bit then it stops when it starts moving....it has a fuel filter warning light

      That sounds like a possible injector fault or a tight cylinder from something like a spun big end shell or a broken ring, if you could do a relative compression test and one cylinder is higher amperage than the others it will indicate a tight cylinder otherwise it's worth checking for fault codes.       Hi Ian, sorry for the long time before I replied.
      I work at a garage and don't get much diag work there, it's code read and order what it needs, sometimes other local garages ask if I could do a diag for them on my way home.
      They have asked if I would work for myself full time, I would like to do that sometime because I enjoy this sort of work.
