  • Rainwater Harvesting Gutters Install (Part 1: Metal Roofing Mistake Correction And Gutter Layout)
    In this video we’ll cover the prep work for putting vinyl gutters on our carport to feed into our rainwater collection tanks. First, I’ve got to fix a mistake I made when installing the metal roofing panels on the carport. I got a little distracted and forgot to let them overhang the bottom edge by an inch or so to allow the water to drop cleanly into the gutters, rather than dribble down the wood underneath the edge of the metal. For this, I made a quick and dirty fix using some metal flashing to extend the overhang by a bit.
    Then we had to think about the layout a bit to get the right slope and positioning of the gutters.
    Come back for Part 2 where we’ll finish up the install of both the gutters to collect from the roof and the PVC piping to transport it to the rainwater collection tanks.
    Thanks for watching, and hope you enjoy!

    I've always believed that the real skill in construction is not necessarily in knowing how to build but rather in being able to fix your screwups.

      You're absolutely right! I've said before that I've spent my entire life trying not to make any mistakes, but now it's time for me to accept that they're going to happen and just deal with them the best I can. Still very difficult for me!

    Brian I thought your improvisation using the flashing was absolutely brilliant. Storing that away in case I need that fix myself. I envy you not having to trench 45 ft to your tank LOL like someone I know.

      Thanks, Don. No trenching, but I do have to hang some PVC to get it over to the tanks. Hope that doesn't cause me too much trouble! 🤞

      @@MidlifePrices Brian will you encase the PVC going from the roof to the tank in some sort of insulated sleeve to keep things from Busting during colder winter days. I saw that happened to Jim in one of his videos.

      @@affordabledesertliving3487 Hmm. I wasn't planning on it, Don. Theoretically, water should never be sitting in that pipe, so there shouldn't be anything there to freeze. I'll have to go back and look at what happened to Jim, but I don't think there should be a condition where water could freeze in that section of pipe.

    Fun not so fun job. It's so much easier with another set of hands and ladder jacks to run a 2X12 through so your not having to climb down every few minutes to move your ladder. BUT most people don't have those type of things. I was blessed my grandfather was a painter. So I was blessed to have ladder jacks and old-fashion wooden expandable plinks when I had to do mine on our other home 20 plus years ago. Now at my age with much more wisdom and a wee bit more money. I hire some younger people I know that do it for a living. Yes I do get the adopted grandfather discount... LOL... Also they remember back in 2002 September 14th. I was 24feet up on a ladder and got knocked off the ladder and spent 4 weeks in the hospital and was out of work for 13 months. My body was broken BADLY to say the least. Now if I get on a ladder even a stepstool I get fearful and physically sick. So I don't do any thing over 6 feet off the ground and I'm 5' 11"... LOL...... As always much love and prayers may you kids be blessed in Jesus name... BBE...

      Thanks, Bobby. Specialty tools are definitely nice when you have to do something a lot, but I'll get by for just doing these things once or twice. Sorry to hear about your trouble. Ladders are definitely dangerous things! Always trying to be careful here. Stay safe.

    Good fix! I agree. No one will ever see the flashing (unless they're on top of the hill.). Heads up - that North-South pipe might get a little heavy being that far out from your roof to your tank.
    I killed 2x Diamondbacks the other day. Caught them listening to Barry White under a tree when my dog sniffed them out,. So they had to go - lead poisoning!

      Yeah, I've been wondering whether the pipe out to the tank will need some support.

    I know you're not specifically a "how to" channel but you filmed a really nice how to video. I like how you are going to feed you tank using gravity and a pretty simple pvc pipe system.... gravity is your friend : ) Do the brackets on your gutters have a channel for screening? I know it's pennies a foot and is something you might want to consider. Another layer of water filtering never hurts and it really helps with gutter clean out later. Even with no large trees around you'd be amazed at what the wind blow up on your roof.

    • @MidlifePrices
      @MidlifePrices  3 роки тому

      Thanks, David! I don't really do the how-to thing on purpose, but it's just kind of how I talk when I'm trying to show what I'm doing. Hopefully people get something out of it. There's no channel for screens. We're in a pretty open area, and not much gets on the roof other than dust and maybe some bird droppings that actually almost burn off from the sun. I don't think we need to screen the whole gutter run, but I'll definitely want some sort of screening at the downspout area. Still thinking about that one.
