This album made every UFO song a 1000x better and they were already great. Love to Love, Rock Bottom, Too Hot to Handle and I'm a Loser all elevated to even better heights on it
minor technicality...
i believe the uk version of sitn
opens with, hot 'n' ready vs natural thing.
not sure what "hot" clocks in at, but, funstuff. U F O
UFO all the way. I love Blackmore and as improvisational musicians, I'd give Purple the nod. However; every song on Strangers in the Night, arguably, is better than the studio version. The songs are concise enough yet still offer sufficient variation from the studio versions as to keep them fresh. Rock Bottom, Doctor Doctor and Lights Out are three of the greatest live songs you'll ever hear....and they are all on the same album! Thanks for holding this competition, Pete! Its been a blast.
Freakin' spot on. Everything you said is right on the money. All of it.
This was so well done and put together. Really appreciate your efforts on this. So, so, so, so, difficult a choice. Thank you Mr Pardo!
Strangers In The Night, my favourite ever live album
I have been totally behind UFO all the way through this competition, and I’m not going to change now. Strangers In The Night is the greatest live album all the damn time, every damn time!!
Agree. UFO, couldn't much better! . But purple is purple.. And made in japan is the mountain of live performances
@MLG, Well, UFO stood up next to the mountain, and knocked it down with the back of their hands.
I’m a bigger fan of Purple but the UFO album has such energy, I’m going for that.
One of the toughest ones for us. Gotta go with UFO’s “Strangers In The Night.” Just a major Schenker fan.
Hard for me too. Vote against Jon Lord? Ritchie? Can't help it. Gotta go with Schenker and my Vinyl love for Strangers.
Every time I listen to Made in Japan I feel exhausted afterwards. It’s the energy and the virtuosity the improv, they bring it right to the edge. It will always be my number 1 ✌🏼
Both are great but I pick UFO! 🎤🎸🎵🥁
Very Close Call; Highway Star is my Favorite Live song but UFO, Strangers in the Night from Start to Finish is my favorite Live Album...so UFO.
I live both bands but UFO Strangers in the night is the best live album all time
Each musician of Deep Purple is incredible on Made in Japan
The best drumming performance on a rock live album ever
youve offered up my # 1 & # 2 favorite live rock albums. ufo, deep purple, in that order. The two best live (imo) hard rock recordings to date.
As much as I respect Blackmore, Schenker smokes through his solo on Rock Bottom for over 5 minutes with no chord changes! That's so hard to be melodic when the chord never changes! He's a musical genius of his own kind. UFO gets my vote.
No doubt. Blackmore is all ego. Schenker in UFO was unstoppable. No one even came close. The second everyone caught wind of Schenker leaving UFO everyone from Ozzy to Aerosmith begged him to join their bands, Blackmore had to form Rainbow and pay people to play with him. LOL Schenker Rules, Blackmore Drools.
UFO all the way 😉
For me it's an easy pick. Though i love UFO, Deep Purple is a clear winner. Rock on Pete. :D
Deep Purple. I had this one pegged as a top ten live album from the beginning. Lots of competition, but they're at the top of it.
A mighty choice indeed! But I'd hit rock bottom before choosing anything other than UFO!
Great albums! Strange kind of woman was one of the first songs I had to learn on guitar, and I hated that song .... haha. For that fact alone I vote for UFO. O yeah and because I never went to pieces with Purple as I did when listening to SITN!
Strangers in the Night...UFO...All the way!!
The toughest challenger so far but UFO is still the winner.
Everyone knows “made in Japan “ is one of the best live albums ever.
UFO all way! Without doubt the best live album ever! Schenker is a guitar god.
Both Amazing Albums. Deep Purple for the WIN!
Interesting to see who are the ones kicked out by Made in Japan
- Led Zeppelin The song remains the same
- Who Live at Leeds
- Rainbow on Stage
- Lynyrd Skynyrd One More From the Road
- Free Live
add UFO and Rush to the list for the supreme winner.....I must say bludgeoning the Who at 70-30 was most amusing.....
This battle couldn't be any closer. Strangers in the Night is the more consistent album, but the high points of Made in Japan take it to another level. Deep Purple for me.
In My Opinion it is not close UFO Strangers in the Night is much better, much more melodic and much more rock. The best album ever Live or Studio. Schenker, Moog, Way, Parker and Raymond.
Deep Purple
UFO produced an utterly brilliant album but Purple were in their definitive period and were captured exactly right. 2 x stellar gtr players with their own issues caught at their peak. purple were just a band of great players with the definitive rock kybd player imo
UFO -STRANGERS!
Strangers in the night is near perfect. Probably the best live album there is really
Hey Pete I cant help but notice that the seas are anything but tranquil here lol. I know Deep Purple are your boys but as I've said before nothing will ever beat UFO and hopefully once they take their rightful place at the top of the podium then (and only then) will the seas be tranquil.
@@apollomemories7399 fuck me. Other than Rock Bottom thos are my 2 favorite tracks on the album. This is worse than Star Wars in the hands of the mouse :(
UFO 👍🏻
Very difficult but if I have to pick one it's Deep Purple. This isn't just music both these albums are an unforgettable experience but Purple just pips it for me.
UFO all day long best live album ever
This is the Super Bowl. Since these are my two favorite live albums of all time I haven't made up my mind yet but I suspect the winner here takes it to the house.
Although Deep Purple's MIJ is superb and a classic, their musicianship unparalleled, SITN is for me the better album because it showcases the best songs this hard working band achieved, and MS's solos are sublime. The album as a whole is exhilarating because of this dynamic.
This is a hard pick but made in japan was a game changer for me both albums very strong
Purple is a winner. Blackmore, Lord, Paice, Gillan, Glover....MKII were a super-group....
Thanks, Pete
Gotta go with UFO on this matchup DP is good but this UFO album is just amazing
“Can I have everything louder than everything else?”....DEEP PURPLE!!!!!!
😆 lolololol great..... PURPLE the loudest of the the LOUD .....
Probably my two favourite live albums and two of my favourite albums full stop. Even though some of MiJ has dated a bit, eg side 4, there's still enough classic material to give it the edge over strangers so I'm going for Blackmore over Schenker although it hurts to vote against strangers in the night
For me personally...Uriah Heep Live '73....my fav live lp ever....but gotta give it to DP here.
Dude Uriah Heep's live album smokes....
Can I vote for both? Toughest choice in the whole tournament for me. Love both bands and choosing either over the other feels like cheating.
Strangers
YouEff Oh! You Eff Oh! As great as Japan is, UFO edges it for me. The DP noodling doesn't reward re-listening as much as a good Dead show does so give me the tight high energy run through the greatest hits any day
I love DP, saw them in 85, but SITN is the best live rock album ever. Hello Chicago, would you please welcome from England, U F O!
What a great announcer!!!
DP Mach 2 at their peak! Sorry, but I gotta go with what I like best.
Made in Japan is in a class of its own Nothing Compares in my opinion
schenker in the night
Always Purple.
Deep Purple Made in Japan No doubt for me.Not only does it mean more to me. It's better it's a powerhouse.
My #1&2 live albums of all time.. with that said which of these albums is the true raw live album? I refuse to take the bait, the best one is the one I am listening to at the moment!!!! Rock on
Made in Japan is just the greatest live album of all time, LIVE written in capital letters - no overdubs at all, which cannot be said about Strangers in the Night. Schenker may be great and more technical, but Blackmore is more original, has more soul and is overall more versatile and inventive player. Jon Lord is still unsurpassed as is Ian Paice. No contest here, Deep Purple is the greatest live band of all time, Made in Japan for the win.
It's the truth !
What a moron. Strangers is known as THE Live album that's not overdubbed. One thing is Schenker was already gone so no overdubbs from him
Sempre gostei de discos ao vivo ou live .
This is a strange one DP winning on here but UFO winning on FB.
As seems to be the case for most of these.
Purple all day long.
I'm torn here purple are my fav band ever it's amazing album made in Japan but I adore UFO and let's face it if I had to pick one live album for me strangers gets this one . However I must say even tho gun to my head UFO wins of the four each one is a winner here cuz they are all classics it don't get better than that four four superb live albums by four of the greatest bands of all time
Oops! Thinking of the wrong match-up...Gotta be UFO!!!
Deep Purple has set the bar as far it goes for Live performances and certainly for live albums, Made In Japan is probably the best live album EVER! Although the songs are from 3 different shows but the recording is genuine with no sort of overdubs or other manipulation. The musicianship of al 5 members is unbelievable! No other band has ever come close!
On the other hand Ufo's strangers in the night is a great live Rock album and also one of the best but is heavily manipulated...
Also from several shows, Lights out has roaring audience sounds from another show, 2 songs Mother Mary & This kids were actually recorded in a studio and agin added audience sounds...
Also there are lot of overdubs in the songs, the only person that did not approve and did not agree to preform any overdubs was Michael Shanker and after this he was out and far away from the band.
With all my love to Stranger's in the night it is far far away from Made in Japan!!!
Yes made in Japan is probably the best ever
Great points and excellent analysis. Exactly why I had to pick Deep Purple..
Thank you for laying out the facts.
Purple, Purple, Purple
No, No, No
@@nicholasthornley9708 yes, and long live Ritchie Blackmore
@@laurenzgraffilpenstein8117
Long live Tommy Bolin. Oh, wait a minute.
@@nicholasthornley9708 That is a great Purple song from Fireball!
@@brucefranklin6295
I know that
UFO,ASK EDDIE TRUNK THAT QUESTION l.o.l.
Well We Wanted This Competition and now We have to Choose Between two of the Greatest live Albums of All Time.....I have just Tossed a Coin To Decide.. Deep Purple Came Up Heads.. So Blame Queen Elizabeth II. Not me.
When Pete started to mention the musicians From each band towards the end..Deep Purple wins hands-down just for that.
That is one of the BEST line-ups of any band, EVER!
In my opinion, there's never been a better hard rock lineup than Schenker, Mogg, Way, Raymond and Parker. They were great in the studio, but on stage is where they absolutely shined.
I am also a big UFO fan they are number two on my list behind purple of course I like a certain sound to music when I listen to it and those two bands are on top of my list.. of course early Sabbath as well also dio era of rainbow.. rush. Frank Marino and Mahogany rush also stand out with his fantastic guitar playing..the top three guitarist in my book are Ritchie Schenker and Frank Marino..
Deep Purple for me, i'll leave it at that.
Just found your site. I was wondering if Tokyo Tapes made in the "live" tournament?
My 12 points go to.......U.F.O one of the best live album ever made ( on vinyl)!!!!!!
UFO!🎵🎸🎤🥁
Strangers in the night Is the greatest live album ever. It just is
UFO
UFO!
Deep Purple all the way. Long live Ritchie Blackmore and his mates.. BUT, I am a huge UFO enthusiastic and I really state them as one of England's greatest rock, heavy acts of the 70s..
Made in Japan is purples best document and I think it's unbeatable.
Deep Purple - Made in Japan. Not even a close one for me.
I wonder how many people voting for Deep Purple actually ever listened to UFO SITN. Ive listened to both and can't see how anyone could choose Deep Purple over UFO. SITN is sooooo much better in every way.
Which are you arguments for this strange statement?
UFO all the way. Rock Bottom. End of discussion.
SITN is a great live album but come on people Made In Japan is the best live album ever made, it is a complete performance by one of the best rock bands ever. Much as I love UFO and saw them back in the 70's along with the Purp's the sum of the parts are not greater than Purple.
Deep Purple has been my pick to win the whole thing!
Deep Purple Made in Japan to move on!
I agree Purple to win it all. No other live album compares period
Made In Japan.
Purple's MIJ all the way. It has no equal.
No drum solo on SITN. It is a better release IMO.
im a drummer and dont care for drum solos. SITN gets my vote too, for other reasons.
like I said from the beginning . sticking to my Guns. DEEP PURPLE MADE IN JAPAN #1 UFO #2 SPACE TRUCKIN'
Purple
Have to go with the legendary MADE IN JAPAN
Love them both but Strangers for me.
Very Tough Match up. Hurts to vote against Mark 2 Purple but grudgingly I have to go with STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT.
Feeling guilty about Purple so i have to go drink...damn tough. Lets go with another..
Gillan > Mogg / Glover > Way / Lord > Raymond / Paice > Parker / Blackmore = Schenker; Put it this way, there's really no competition.
I'll give you Gillan and Paice. But Way was a better song writer, performer and better bass player. He was a finger picker too. Never used a pick. UFO became a far better band when Paul Raymond joined the band. Much of UFO's success is due to his contribution. Also, Raymond played rhythm guitar as well. Lastly, during the late 70s, Schenker played circles around Ritchie Blackmore. Listen to the astonishing 5+ minute solo on Rock Bottom. most all of it is played over 1 chord on the keyboard....then there's Lights out ua-cam.com/video/FhYG6dMRGBM/v-deo.html
Deep Purple is a jazz band in disguise
I've expected Made in Japan to win the tournament from the beginning. I faced this exact decision when I was putting my top 20 live albums together and in the end, I plumped for UFO. Why ? I find it more consistent although Made in Japan has some brilliant highs. I just can't listen to long drum solos and Space Truckin' frustrates me. There are other songs I'd much prefer to hear.
Well said. Song for song Strangers is a better listen IMO. No doubt that MIJ is great, but I always skip the drum solo and Space Truckin'. The remaster added Black Night which was great to hear.
You sir are 100% correct. I don't need a 20 minute version of Space Truckin' in my life, and I don't want to hear the Mule again, EVER!
UFO strangers in the night is my favorite of all times !
Hard one to choose, but for me it's purple although strangers in the night are an awesome recording.
I've always been a fan of both bands from way back... without turning this comment into a long winded novel I'd say Made In Japan.... just my opinion...
I only like Deep Purple in the MKIII and MKIV Formation so I go with UFO 🙂
Crushing first round knock out...opponent never saw it coming. Winner Deep Purple
Deep Purple- made in Japan just might be the best rock live album ever. Purple hands down the better of these two, hell Purple might just be the best hard rock band ever also... definitely one of the big three
Remember everyone, its the best album not favorite band.
S I T N is the winner!
I agree my friend. The BEST Live Album.
I 've listened to Made in Japan a couple hundred times.Strangers in the Night maybe 50 or 60 times. For me,Made in Japan is the best album, with superior musicianship at every position other than guitar, which I rate equal. Mogg is competent, but just doesn't do much for me.
The Battle of Britain! UFO is the WINNER for me. Is there a Doctor Doctor in the house???
Love both of these but Deep Purple is my favorite band, Jon Lord's insane organ and improvisational interplay with Blackmore is the difference for me. Furthermore, while SITN has some great tracks such as Light's Out and Rock Bottom it also has a lot of forgettable filler whereas MIJ is outstanding from start to finish.
Purple came out first. UFO surpassed them on guitar playing and most everything else. And I love most of deep Purple and Rainbow.
Deep Purple for sure.
Poll or no poll, UFO Strangers in the night is the best live rock album of all time.
Schenker>>>>>>Blackmore. Schenker smokes Blackmore.
I would disagree on both accounts. Seen Blackmore 6 times live and seen Schenker 3 times.Seen both in 70's,80's and saw Schenker just 4 years ago. It's a matter of taste.I will say that for the most part Schenker is more consistent. UFO have some really good songs and Purple have some iconic songs.Saw UFO at the show that was recorded in Chicago and saw Purple about 6 or 7 years later. No question in my mind who was the more awe inspiring band.
@@lucasbeer353 Plus a band is more than just a guitarist. Ian Gillan, Jon Lord, and Ian Paice destroy their counterparts in UFO. No way are these 2 bands on the same level.
Both are awesome but Blackmore is awesomer.
Are you high ;-)
Blackmore is the greatest guitar player of the 70s.much diverse, a raw, freaky monster, crazy, a bulldozer, his stage show, his vibe is amazing .. Plus concerto for group and orchestra!
@@johnr7279 wow....ua-cam.com/video/deHM9w4vDcE/v-deo.html
With all due respect for Deep Purple, SITN by UFO just can't be beat.
Both great albums. But has to be Purple.
