Malayali audiences have no issues with mass movies, most of the biggest hits came from malayalam industry are mass movies.... We don't like over mass scenes which we feel funny like the villain fly over a long distance with a small touch from the hero, or a car flies when the hero kicks it... All movies are setting in it's own logical world... If a superhero does like this, then that movie is within it's logical world, if hero is a normal human being, it feels like a cringest scene... The movie needs a proper explanation and a make belief to the scene........ In KGF, all what is showing as mass scenes are feels like believable because of its making... That's called make belief in movies..... Thus KGF is highly appreciated by the malayali audiences, if it was in other so called mass masala illogical genre, then it won't get this welcoming in Kerala........ So if a mass movie like KGF is made from malayalam, then definately it will became a huge success here for sure...... We have no problem with mass movies, only we don't like some over action movies, that's all👍🏻
I think also one of the reasons why we don’t associate Mass Commercial cinema so much with Malayalam movies is because the audience are very questioning in the sense that, if you stitch together a Mass movie with actions that defy our understanding of what is technically physically possible, without being able to convince the audience extremely well that in fact he/she has some super powers, we’ll easily cringe or laugh it off. I mean, I think the Malayali audience can accept Mass more when it is done in other industries by other actors, but when our own actors do that, we can be very sceptical. I think we are quite used to the format of cinema being as closer to real life as possible that when we see something that strays so further away from reality, it puts us off easily. I think it is also one of the reasons why our movies were not quite appealing to us in the early 2000s, when we moved away from the real life narrative formats and tried to follow what the other south industries were doing. Action or commercial or anything, but don’t question the audience’s intelligence!
I feel it is because majority of the heroes - Jayan, Madhu, Mammooty, Mohanlal, Shobhana, Urvashi, Murali, Joju George many more - they came in with almost nothing, risking many things. They were true to their heart - and that reflected in screen. They liked acting so they came, not because of the money or power. Not just heroes, many other actors as well. This mindset along with luck and similarly passionate script writers and directors combined helped Malayalam movies become great. I think it was just a lucky time for all of us.

The budget constrains of malayalam industry is the main reason, and as he said we do not need to make our own mass movies, as we consider Tamil movie as our own and it can be released and enjoyed across kerala in Tamil even without subtitles .. We may not have panindian malayali movies but definitely have pan indian technicians, original ideas. The latest being DOP of Pathan...Sachith Paulose.
As a Malayali and an 80s kid, I have grown up watching several Malayalam films. A mass Malayalam film is a little odd because that charm of Malayalam films compared to other South Indian language films is the subtlety, natural and almost realistic stories. There is no larger than life drama, suspending disbelief, etc compared to say Tamil or Telugu. However, I feel that a true Malayalam mass film should be made but we have quite a long way to go for that because our whole film making perception has to change to defy our core Malayali audience where say they just accept that we can also do it our own way but make it grandiose like say an RRR with strong memorable story lines. The problem is that attempts were made by Prithiviraj on 'Lucifer' and Basil Joseph's 'Minal Murali'... I am sorry to say that both films were below average. Total waste of a concept and plot.... these films could have been great but it just did not click. 'Minal Murali' was partly hyped more than its actual worth. 'Lucifer' seemed to give more importance to the starcast in it than the story and the plot was a mess of ideas. Mass movies do not happen just because by default you are spending millions and throwing in a bunch of legends. I think the best approach to take is not to go with this notion that we are going to make a "mass movie" but more by being free and at the same time being true to our roots like how 'Kantara' did for Kannada (which almost reminded me of Malayalam films).
As a malayali we dont need any mass movies.. may be you want it.. but we malayalees don’t need it.. we all made these types of masala mass early… and now we more intelligent people cant watch mass but troll

That's why they make cult classics like ee.mai. yau, kumbalangi nights, ayyappanum koshiyum, kala, The great Indian kitchen and many other quality movies. Who said Malayalam cinema is popular?? Any statistics? If you are talking about awards, then it is not public opinion. Still a Malayalam cinema can't have a pan Indian release not followed by people from other states.
Yes Sir, you are right in aspects like no Pan-Indian movies similar to RRR or KGF. But having said that, malayalam movies focus more on content and technical aspects like acting, since the native target audience is lesser in numbers and also since it is not a big industry in terms of business size. However, in the last 5 to 6 years have gained popularity among non-native speakers as well, strictly going by the popular opinions of many stalwarts in their interviews from other industries. I am not aware about the movies' popularity vis-a-vis other industries, but more popular outside Kerala alone, which was the case few years back. This is mainly due to the variety it offers by making more films with realistic content. However, art wise malayalam movies used to win awards in national level categories from the time they have been introduced, considering its small market size.

Honestly, I get Malayalies wanting to a good mass movie I am getting bored of watching Telugu mass movies not because they are bad or don't have good production I want variety like big budget fantasy they tried radhe shyam and sita ramam as a big budget grand romance can we have a more big budget movie with more verity
There was a mass movie in malayalam With prthviraj Urmi!
Malayalam is the realwood, originality wood, real acting etc
95% malayalam viewers looking for logical convenice, its hard to entertain malayalees without logics. At the sametime they are not logical priority for other industry movies and enjoys the movies 100%.
Malayalam has most no of legendary actors in india.
I am 100% sure malayalam is no 1 position in the creation of movies that passes decades over time and enthusiasting generations
All other industry is now ruling (both acting and boxoffice wise) new super stars But mollywood still rules Big Ms.

Worrying that all discussions are pointed towards "mass" movies, as if that is the ultimate standard to strive for.
Mollywood 🔥
@@lostworld5667 I think you should read my comments once again. That is not what I talked about. If this is what constitutes a Malayali's "Intelligence, " as you described, then I'd rather remain a fool. Keep on trolling... and as you do, 'RRR' is already sweeping all the international awards! Simple criteria mallu film maker follows here don't underestimate the audience, don't challenge mallu people's intelligence..
So true!! They don’t like to state the obvious within the movie. Instead they allow the audience to come up with their own theories and use context clues to piece together the story.
Lucifer was brilliant film
Who is this man... He doesn't know anything about malayalam movies it's core... He doesn't to explain it's essence...

Unpopular opinion - Malayalam films are not actually popular🙃....
Ok bro , Even rajamouli said malayalam industry has the best script writing in India. Did he say that because it's not popular???
@@dorotan461 So if rajamouli says there is best stories and script then Malayalam cinema is popular....?
Actually Telugu stars and movies were popular in india not because of unique story telling or good scripts.. But because of Sony max and other tv channels from early 2000s made telugu films in Hindi dubbed and the telugu actors and movies were very popular...
After ott shift from audience slowly Malayalam cinemas are popular but not in a big way like Telugu 🤷

We do make shit movies as well. The latest one is "Monster" played by Mohanlal and "Christopher" done by Mammotty. And, guess what? They went to the trash bin after the first day and there are trillions of trolls on social media about these crap movies. The thing is that we do not like stories that don't make sense even if it is done by a megastar and even he will be trolled left and right. The biggest strength is the matured audience. We do like to watch mass mega action movies from tamil, telugu and hindi as well and treat them as entertainment only. But, when it comes to Malayalam, there is no compromise in the quality of the content and the script writers and directors know about it. That's why they make cult classics like ee.mai. yau, kumbalangi nights, ayyappanum koshiyum, kala, The great Indian kitchen and many other quality movies. A simple story line happens in a small village or a simple incident and the rest is in the hands of script writers, directors , DOP, music directors and of-course actors.
We can do mass appealing movies. By mass i didnt mean movies like KGF and bahubali but movies like Kantara, minnal murali, #2018 etc. These are the movies which rooted and at the same time big enough to pull the other lang audience.
I have some expectation on upcoming tovino movie ARM which is rroted to a local fictional period drama
Malayali audience wants realistic movies.. the mass masala movie will never succeed here.. which cheats science.. there are a lot of trolls for this reason many have trolled telugu and kannada here 😂
But now TELUGU industry changed a lot from 2016 they are also doing realistic films thriller, horror science fiction, all genre films and where audience were accepting..

@@WriteChords good movies are flop in Kerala itself. Movies like Mahaveeryar and Nanpakal nerath mayakkam are flop in Kerala. So how movies are going to gain popularity in other states?
