Inspector Wexford - An Unkindness of Ravens

  • From the VHS cover:
"Detective Chief Inspector Reg Wexford thinks that the disappearance of Rodney Williams is nothing more serious than a case of a wayward husband, who has run off with another woman. But when his body is discovered, buried in a wood, Wexford realises he has another case of murder to solve. ..."
The sound is a little muffled to begin with but hopefully clear enough for you to hear, this often happens with VHS tapes compared with DVD and Blu-ray.

I only have to hear the theme tune and it takes me back to England in front of the fire in the winter...me putting the kettle on, my husband saying..."Hurry up Luv , it's about to start." I live in the Andes now and my husband died recently so watching this is bittersweet but very welcome.

I am on a long crawl around youtube of British police shows, there always seems to be something excellent ahead. From Vera to Z cars, Softy Softly, Maigret (done slightly weirdly) and now here. My favourite actor in this series is.... the countryside, the English green. Thankyou for posting, they give a lot of pleasure.

The forensic "details" in American crime series exist just to cover up the poorly constructed plots and flimsy characters; Ruth Rendell was a brilliant author, so the adaptations of her novels would be correspondingly so.

Mr. Goddard, thank you so kindly for bringing this series to UA-cam for our viewing pleasure! ❤ I know that you mentioned a sound quality problem, so I utilized the closed captioning option. However, what I had found is a rather intermittent, incomplete, and sometimes erroneous translation of the spoken word to the written form. This issue has occurred on other programs, as well. Unfortunately, I miss some key words and sometimes entire sentences. I hope that you can improve the closed captioning quality for us! Thank you for all your good work!

I'm usually calling out "Finger prints! Don't touch!" "DNA!" No gloves worn by the police when handling items.
I love how a cup of tea is offered, even in a situation where a medical doctor would say not to eat or drink anything. The person taken to the police station is allowed to sit in the back seat of an un-fenced (Not sure what the gate is called) Such a lovely place to live in that it is not necessary!

I've read all Ruth Rendell's books at least twice, there's no one to equal her! However, and this one reminds me, I always hated how much Wexford favors his pretty daughter over the ordinary looking one. If Sylvia's prickly and not as sweet as Sheila, it's because he's made her feel inferior and made Sheila conceited, "If I had a pound for every man who's made a pass at me..." "Then you'd be rich as well as beautiful," Ick.

Rubbish, Sylvia had her Mum who gave her more attention than she did Sheila. We have a choice as to how we choose to be as an adult. This was made 30 years ago and the book published five years before that. If it had been written today (2021) Rendell and the show's producers, wouldn't have had to dance around the issue (the elephant in the room) of the murder victim being a pedophile, and guilty of incest.
And Rendell, or the scriptwriter, puts in ironic digs against the wives (rightly so) for being anti-feminist. Both wives are incredibly passive , who in the desire for a good man who'll take care of them, find a bigamist and pedophile who tried it on with his own daughters. The first wife, rather than protect her own daughter, pretends the abuse is her daughter's fault. All to make sure the boat isn't rocked and that she can continue her days of watching TV instead of getting rid of the monster in their family.
I enjoyed this episode but it really is annoying to see so many female characters without a spine. But then, I lived in the UK during this period and this behaviour was not all that rare.

Still common today, more than most realise. I was really creeper out by how the mother and son were touching each other so intimately and incestuously. It's a real pity they didn't all just see each other as allies and go public about the weasel. That would have taken his power away and they could have easily had him charged with several crimes. Of course that would have meant they would have to work to support themselves but they would had to anyway. Instead they ruined their daughters lives. And their own really. After all they were all failures really. Real pity the daughter didn't go onto college and become a doctor. Yes yes I know it's only make believe. But truth is as strange as fiction.

I bluetooth it into my stereo system from my tablet. If you have a boombox with an aux input it could work on that, too. I think the device was about $25.

When Inspector Wexford says about Sarah, midway in the investigation
that it couldn't be her because she had her nose in the books and was
headed to med school, he was pointing to the ONE LEAST LIKELY TO
BE THE GUILTY ONE, I had a hunch, but dismissed the idea. Just goes
to show you that I could never make it as a murder detective! Not LOL

I find I can’t watch some shows where the scenes are very dark as I can’t make out what they are saying but haven’t found the scenes in Wexford to be dark, thank goodness!
