Inspector Wexford - A Guilty Thing Surprised

- The following description of this story is taken from the reverse side of the VHS:
Elizabeth Nightingale seemed a happily married woman with many friends and few enemies. Yet, when her body is discovered in a dark wood, Chief Inspector Reg Wexford and his valued sidekick, Inspector Burden, unearth a whole battallion of suspects with their own resentments, their own private hatreds, their own jealous passions. Only the astute, persistent - almost psychic - perceptions of human frailty lead Wexford and Burden to the dark, yet obvious, conclusion that there lurks a very cunning killer waiting to be brought to justice.
Mr Goddard, I want to tell you how much I appreciate this Wexford series. The episodes are superior in every way and such a pleasure. Thank you for putting these together.
Thank you 😊
@@paulgoddard I agree !
I wish every episode had closed captions. It helps me follow along better.
Great shows. Thank you.
What a deep awareness Wexford has of human behaviour. And Burden, so moralistic. Great characters.
Ian really enjoying the entire Inspector Wexford series. Thank you so much for posting Mr. Goddard!
I will watch every one of these because they are in chronological order. Thank you.
I have seen so many of the actors from here in the old Midsomer Murders series when John Nettles Chief Inspector Barnaby. I see that a lot in the English TV series a lot of the same actors over and over again you can actually see them age through the years
Yes, but in fact Americans use and recycle a lot of their actors too. If you watch carefully you’ll see .Hollywood actors showing up again and again in various parts across many different productions over many years.
They are all RSC and the National. John Nettle's wife Joyce is a casting director for the National Theater, she worked on Midsomer with him and knows absolutely everyone. So they get one great classical thespian in every episode, from Bernard Hepton to Simon McBurney to Judy Parfitt.
I have seem Pascoe as a humble P.C. in Frost.
How lucky you are, so!
🍀😂🇮🇪
@@steerpike66 I often wondered how the British films were so adapt at casting believe actors in nearly every role! 😮It’s what sets them apart from American tv where it is such a stretch to believe these plots are happening to these people. I applaud Mrs. Nettles for having such exquisite taste in places actors. Thanks for explaining this
Watching this again. Great series; many thanks for these quality uploads. They never get old. I could watch them over and over if I had time to. Crazy times, but kicking back with wonderful movies gives a sense of normalcy we all need. Blessings.👵😊💖🎶👍
My unending thanks for these series. I love them so. They are some of the best of British mysteries.
Yes.
Have to say that was my favourite one so far in the series. Thanks so much for your posting. 😊
Paul, thank you for uploading these waxford murder mysteries, they're well done well acted and the endings are always a complete surprise!
WAXFORD ?
I like how Reg spouts poetry. Thank you for posting Paul!
Yes, it makes for a nice dimension to his character, that he’s a thinking, reflective man with a sensitive poetic side.
I think Reg is a bit of a poseur, at times...
You'd probably enjoy the Rumpole series, as well. The titular character is also probe to quoting Wordsworth, but he's a barrister (an "old bailey hack") well known for never pleading guilty, his ever-present cheroots, a love for Chateau Thames Embankment (cheap red wine), and taking mostly legal aid cases.
Thank you for this. Always loved the Wexford series and this is one of the best, also I'm a huge fan of Nigel Terry so that was a great bonus. Again, thank you:))

Absolutely Superb Series n worth Watching Again n Again.
Thanks to *Paul* for uploading this. ♥️
Gratitude again, Paul. I enjoy the content of your uploads as well as the content of the commentary of the audience they attract. Hope you and those you love are well.
Yes a mysterious lot who like mystery haha
Paul I think I've told you but it won't hurt to tell you again thank you for posting the Wexford shows. I really enjoy them
Excellent performances by Karen Meagher, Nigel Terry and as Christopher Ravenscroft; good script and very well directed too.
I knew Karen Meagher back in the day..the 70s 😀
I just started watching these, I moved and all I had was my phone, no TV, no wifi, I typed in mysteries and this came up, they are really good thank you, I watched in the past Doc Martin Martin, what a goofy guy, but fun too watch, also Murdock Mysteries, and a few others, some Canadian, some are British, I lived in England for 3 yrs, so I get the humor and their way of thinking, I wish I could go back..well thank you for loading these, it helped, Sue in Alabama
There are some really good PBS murder mysteries on UA-cam (Vera, Poirot, Sherlock Holmes, etc). It's awesome.
I do pay for UA-cam premium so I don't have to deal with commercials, and there is tons of great stuff here.
Many thanks for your wonderful channel bringing us these unbeatable old classics.
Mike’s coat at 1:04:10 is epic. 😂 Thank you for making these available. English detective shows are my favorite.
Thanks so much, Paul. These are simply wonderful and very much appreciated!
Thank you sooo much for this upload. I’m a mad fan of Ruth Rendell, particularly the Wexford chronicles. There’s rarely a quiet moment in the books of ‘Barbara Vine’ Of course, I love these too, but I think Wexford will always be a favourite detective of mine.
It’s amazing to see locations that fit quite well into the books. We can picture Mike and Reg in the little cafe, see the traffic passing buildings hundreds and hundreds of years old....I’m Australian and I doubt I’ll get to England 🏴 unless I win lotto, so the scenery is amazing. Also, there’s a real attention to detail, and a faithful adherence to to quite mundane items mentioned in the books....Mikes widowed, the kids are fighting etc. But homage is allowed when you see that coat. It immediately reminded us of all the times we read what a snappy dresser he was.
You've well expressed what I love about this series and other British series I've been bingeing on! 👏👍
I don't think Mike is widowed in this episode. The kids are very young; the wife is blond-haired. This is Gina, Mike's first wife. His second wife is Jenny; her hair is dark and long; kids are in college.
I love how Wexford takes a tea but doesn't even take a sip from it and leaves it :-) But it's a good episode overall. Thanks for sharing this wonderful series. I'm watching it after an awful day.
He might have thought it poisoned.
I do hope you're better now.
This is a truly wonderful episode, really enjoy it! Thank you from California 🙏🌁😷Stay safe and healthy !😷🏡
Thank you Renata, stay safe too 😊🙂
Rendell, she had observation of curious human (sometimes downright weird) behaviors clocked. A gift to readers and viewers.
You mean "down pat", and I would agree that Rendell was very astute in picking out human foibles with her characterisations.
I wish American schools would teach and reinforce actual English, not this street slang that seems to be ubiquitous in the 21st century. It makes communication between classes and cultures increasingly difficult. 😞
(I just meant that I find it difficult to converse with anyone these days without being misunderstood or not being able to understand, no disrespect intended)
@@msmltvcktl sometimes I use the modern patois, especially when it doesn’t upset the rules of grammar. The urban dictionary is often a referential friend. ;) My favorite character in pulp fiction (the movie) is honey bunny (Amanda Plummer). The description of her in the screenplay: it is impossible to define, just by observation, her wealth, status or class.
I can't understand it, regardless. I am aware of the urban "dictionary", but it holds no value to me, either as a person or as a writer. Most likely, that's due to the fact that I'm presumed to be half literate and fluent in ebonics because of an unfortunate genetic shortcoming. 😞
To be fair, "ebonics" is neutral in comparison to the more racially charged term "AAVE" for one very important reason: the word 'vernacular'.
Rooted as it is in the Latin 'vernaculus', meaning "related to household slaves", one would be correct in considering the term "African American vernacular English" to be the long form of "black slave English". 😳
And that, my friend, is terribly racist terminology embraced by people ignorant of linguistic origins and meanings.
OMG, what an ingenious plot! Thank you for posting!
I am quite pleased to have found this series. I was not aware of its existence. I recognized the Detective Wexford from an episode of Midsomer Murders, apparently filmed many years after this series. Thank you for providing these episodes. From a new subscriber from Central Florida, USA.

So glad you're posting these. I truly enjoy them. I always seem to learn something, like the love of Wordsworth. And I really like the way the writers weave the family life of the 2nd inspector into his personal growth. Every episode is so well crafted. Cheers to all the creators of this series.
As the owner of what's been badged as a Merkur Scorpio, I love it every time the inspector's car is in the shot. Small pleasures.

Top notch, as always, acting and writing, many thanks Paul.
Id like to THANK the ppl who posted comments here; I like reading them.👍😁🥰
I like how the writers are interesting BUT they don’t give away the story.🧐
And I like watching for the specific moments that peaked the certain interest of a viewer. 😎
Thank YOU for your nice comment! Most posters don't give the show away, but unfortunately, I have come across some who do, without announcing first that a spoiler is imminent.
Piqued * the interest 😁
Thank you Paul. I think this was the pilot that aired in two parts, right? I have started watching your videos, but now I am going to watch them in the order in which they were broadcast. I have read all the books, so I am interested in how they work on screen. Hours and hours of fun! Thanks again and Happy Christmas to you.
I like that it is long. The characters can fully develop.
One of my favorite Rendell mysteries ever, I just knew her writing had been televised and so happy to find this.
Very enjoyable. It’s past midnight but I couldn’t go to sleep without knowing whodunnit! Thank you.
Same here, lol! 12.30 when I finished watching it.😊👵👍
This is so funny because as soon as I identify the murderer the suspect is dead! I love my British mysteries. Keep you on your mental toes!
Didn't mean to keep you awake Queen Bee and Melody. This was some time ago so hopefully you have both recovered from the late night by now 😁
Always love the melancholic/heartfelt sound of the Wexford theme also.
Absolutely, I'm already completely hooked on it - authentic, real and beautifully melancholy.
Very good! Didn’t know who the murderer was until the end! Thanks for posting 👏👍😊
Me neither!!✌
There’s always a surprise twist to the ending. Such an amazing writer.

Awesome series, but I wish the episodes were numbered so I could watch them in order. Thanks for posting them!
If you want to watch them in order, just google Inspector Wexford Mysteries and go to Wikipedia. They have listed the episodes in chronological order.
Great show - really enjoyed it - thanks for uploading it, Funny though how the front headrests in the car are removed during the interior scenes but miraculously appear during the external shots...
😅31.49, the mic dips into frame. Love that they went ahead and kept the clip. Makes it all even more human. Love these shows!
Excellent production, Ruth Rendel always a twist in the tail.
Thank you Jack they do don't they 🙂
. It’s so nice to find something decent to watch! Thank you.
Opening: we all wake up and have our bath in full make-up!
Surely. I usually spend an hour doing the full one, glueing the false eyelashes properly, I straighten my hair down then hop I dive in 👁👃👁
Oh, that’s why I don’t look like that when I wake up.
I appreciate the humour :-) But it's stage make-up. Reg and Mike wear it too. Haven't you noticed their eyeshadow? Actors have to be made up, otherwise they look like they've been kept in a cupboard for 300 years.

Boffo performance by Karen Meagher as Georgina. Loved the first interview by the cops. Her hesitancy, slight stumbling over words. The nervousness. Very believable. Good work Karen.

Lord Byron Poetry Excerpt from the first canto of Hunter
"So much he soar'd beyond, or sunk beneath, The men with whom he felt condemn'd to breathe, And long'd by good or ill to separate Himself from all who shared his mortal state. His mind abhorring this had fix'd her throne Far from the world, in regions of her own:"
It's beautiful. Incomprehensible that the poetry of George Gordon Byron is so little known and read.
@@mfjdv2020 He died at the age of 36. Wiki bio says: The figure of the Byronic hero pervades much of his work, and Byron himself is considered to epitomize many of the characteristics of this literary figure. His philosophy was more durably influential in continental Europe than in England; Friedrich Nietzsche admired him, and the Byronic hero was echoed in Nietzsche's superman.
The Byronic hero presents an idealized, but flawed character whose attributes include: great talent; great passion; a distaste for society and social institutions; a lack of respect for rank and privilege (although possessing both); being thwarted in love by social constraint or death; rebellion; exile; an unsavory secret past; arrogance; overconfidence or lack of foresight; and, ultimately, a self-destructive manner. These types of characters have since become ubiquitous in literature and politics. He desperately tried to hide his bisexuality.

Thank you Paul for posting this. I love Rendell and her wonderful adaptation of Wexford. I must say tho, I am not enamoured with Mike. He is stiff, lacks humour and handles witness statements as if he has a suspect in his book. Nevertheless, love the series, warts and all. Again, thanks and cheers from LONDON Canada, July 31, 2020
Just thinking the same thing can't imagine wexford actually putting up with him. Not as if he's a brilliant detective either seems quite niaive and very opinionated. To be honest I dislike him even the actors sour depressed face is too much at times!!
Mike's a good foil for the certainty, charm and assurance of his superior officer.
@@avicennitegh1377 Thank you for your comment! Got to have a contrast in personalities to keep it interesting. One of the reasons I quit watching TV, characters' personalities seemed so "homogenized".
@@nancyhowell4505 that's for sure. The range of personalities, warts and all, keeps me wrapt. I think the Wexford team worked hard at this 😊
@Vicki Jones: Mike is hilariously funny without even knowing it. Actor Christopher Ravenscroft does a brilliant job portraying him. You're right of course, he (Mike) is appallingly stuffy and Victorian, but so much so that I can't help laughing my head off at him. Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !"
Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam ."
Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!"
Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment?"
