The idea that the forward swing should start with the hips squatting and that the pelvis shouldn’t slide (I would call that “Squat and Spin”) is gaining some traction with the popularity of California instructor George Gankas. I will do a video where he explains his ideas and has a “model” student hit balls on Trackman, but here my purpose is to ask why in the world would you want to do that when none of the greatest players in the history of the game have demonstrated that technique? Therefore, I have gone through my bank of model swings and taken the major champions of whom I have stable face on views to prove that in transition, with an iron or a driver, the pelvis slides forward as it changes direction from clockwise to counterclockwise, what Lee Trevino aptly called the “slide/turn”. To simplify the complex movement of the hips and pelvis for my students I have for years asked them to view the hip movement as driving 45 degrees left of the target as the swing changes direction. In reality the right side pelvic rotator muscles start the movement, but many players sense the left knee or hip initiating. It really doesn’t matter how you think about it, as long as the hips gain depth, open and move to the left, pulling the left arm against the chest as the chest stays relatively still. The movement should feel continuous, like a “hula” motion (I wasn’t very good at hula hoops), and the amount of lateral will be determined by the set -up position and the amount of pressure you want on the left side at impact.

Lateral hip on the downswing is most important. Good stuff.

Wish this video was out a few years ago and had read Stack and Tilt. They both would have saved me a lot of struggles. Thank you for this!

Very nicely done. Presented the video evidence and calmly talked us though it. Excellent.

Wow light bulb just went on.I was working on reducing the lateral movement and my ball striking was becoming inconsistent to my detrement. Great video.

I love all the extraordinary players you show here. If anything's to be turning in a barrel, it should be the neck! As shown here, player by player, there's the lateral shift/turn of the hips while the base of the neck stays relatively stationary. Some down movement perhaps, but not lateral. That's how you generate power AND consistency in a nutshell! Great post!

Excellent video as usual. I would add that you want to keep the left knee in front of the left hip as you move laterally. Otherwise you’ll likely stall the pivot and just flip at the ball.

Your analyses are always awesome. I’d like to see this analysis of lateral hip movement compared with any lateral head movement… if any really exists among the best players. Thanks.

In an early book Trevino called that move his 'hula shift'.

It would be great it you could explain why lateral is beneficial? Mechanically.

Thanks for the great presentation, Wayne. it looks like there are four moves, right elbow moves down, head moves down, Lateral shift, and Hip rotation. Based on your experience, which move triggers and syncs the other three? Do you have any drill to bring down the elbow?

Wayne, I love this video, only complaint (not really a complaint either), is that there is no George Knudson footage. He didn't win as much as he should have b/c he couldn't really putt, but I'd argue he had some of the best foot work of all time. Thanks for the content! :)

Wayne, would you agree that ball position at address and ball flight intention will determine the degree of hip slide?

1)Start the transition before the backswing is finished
    2) the left heel is the first move shifting the pressure on the right heel to the left. Also Hogan had an extra long spike installed by a British shoe maker into the ball of the right foot which allowed him he to push off from there

I can only understand and perform the lateral shift via Moe Norman's setup! My body just doesn't repeat the proper weight shift to perform the modern swing! Moe's concepts allow me to generate my maximum power and repeatability with the fewest moving parts! For those who perform the conventional swing, Moe's swing looks awkward but really it is just the opposite! I can fire for all I am worth without strain!

I’ve often thought that David Duval had the finest swing to ever grace the tour. Second only to Hogan.

Turn your left foot open a lot. That should take some pressure off and allow your knee to move laterally a bit more

Analysis paralysis (or paralysis by analysis) describes an individual or group process when overanalyzing or overthinking a situation can cause forward motion or decision-making to become "paralyzed", meaning that no solution or course of action is decided upon. A situation may be deemed as too complicated and a decision is never made, due to the fear that a potentially larger problem may arise. A person may desire a perfect solution, but may fear making a decision that could result in error, while on the way to a better solution. Equally, a person may hold that a superior solution is a short step away, and stall in its endless pursuit, with no concept of diminishing returns. On the opposite end of the time spectrum is the phrase extinct by instinct, which is making a fatal decision based on hasty judgment or a gut reaction.

This video is to refute the teaching of George Gankas who teaches a squat move with little lateral movement, but I also think he does not really teach no lateral movement, he just does not want them to slide at the being of the downswing and wants left knee move towards the target as they wait on the right knee to fire till club is at P5, and not have the right leg fire to fast and let the hips stall out before impact.
Trevino had to have more lateral movement since he aimed so far to the left and Casper played a fade which also requires more lateral movement. Putting a line on the right hip at the top of backswing does not show the true amount of lateral movement, because just turning the hips will pull the right hip way off that line. There should be more lateral movement with irons since it is a descending blow, but if you hit your driver on the upswing you should have just a little lateral movement of lower body.

Advice to his teenager followers to avoid the GG swing and stick with the traditional swing. If you think Tiger had issues with his left knee wait till all GG students end up with Medial meniscus and Ligament issues by the time they reach 30. It's going to be a damn shame seeing them with knee replacement surgeries so young.

it’s not just Gankas’s teaching/promoting little to no lateral motion in the downswing, there are many newer instructors doing this now. I disagree with those who say Mr Hogan didn’t have a hip slide, He clearly did, pull up “Gregg McHatton Blobman” on UA-cam to see an animated movement breakdown of how Hogan slid then turned....

@@wdefrancesco I thought Casper played a hook later in his career but a fade earlier. Here is a Billy Casper quote from 2007 in Golf Digest, “My standard ball flight with the driver was a fade, but it wasn't the type of fade that hit and stopped. It was a low line drive that ran like mad. Bo Wininger thought the ball bounced like a gorilla on the run. The Gorilla. ... I wish that would have stuck.”

most backswings load about 80 % of the pressure to the right leg at the top. the question becomes how much pressure do you want on your left leg at impact? if you want 90 % for an iron that implies a larger shift, but even if you go from 80% to 50/50 with a driver that's still shift, as shown by the driver swings you see in the video
