Used to have the wrong impression that moss was dirty and only grew in places like sewers, couldn't be more untrue. Recently I started having isopods as pets and wanted to create a cool terrarium for them to live in, and I finally discovered how pretty moss actually is. It's like owning a tiny forest, and watching my isopods roam freely on the green moss is just so comforting.
Most large pet stores have Frog Moss or Terrarium Moss that comes in container bags. This sphagnum moss still has life in it and will propagate faster. Some brands of Orchid Moss (where you buy plants) will be able to revive from dry to growth as shown in this video. Most other brands will not propagate from the dried material. This is a great video and has all the simple and basic techniques for growing sphagnum moss - very nice presentation.
I've been searching the internet for this! Yours is the simplest and it's exactly what I was looking for. Great job benji. I wish I can also setup my own sphagnum moss terrarium in the future.
I know this comment is from 5 months ago but just in case you’ve not found it yet, it’s on Amazon. I just got mine in the mail today so hopefully I’ll have luck with it!…🤞🏼😬🤞🏼
I used to fight with my dad for YEARS about keeping the moss in our yard because it was less work to maintain than regular grass and he finally caved and settled for a moss and clover lawn
After my grandmother had passed away' I've been travelling to her home so that I can gather up as much moss as I possibly can. The land is so healthy that the moss is growing in a thick layer. Definitely going to see if I can grow them in a few terrariums soon
I first watched this video three months ago and immediately ordered the same brand of dried moss. I placed a layer of it in a reusable 4"x6" container, covered it with plastic wrap, poked a few holes and once in a while sprayed it with distilled water. It's been 2 and 1/2 months since and I was starting to lose hope when, much to my surprise, I think I see small, living sphagnum leaves/branches starting to appear. Now I'm so excited to see if anything becomes of them. Until this point I've only been picking grass blades out of the rehydrated, once dry moss. Thanks for the video! I'm excited!
Don't expect all sphagnum packages to regrow though, most often it'd just be algae and in many cases the sphagnum is completely sterilized and the spores killed, though if you've some carnivorous plants nurseries/websited that deliver, you can buy live sphagnum moss directly for like 3€ in France, and it's quicker to propagate it and you'll be sure to have some sphagnum. That's better especially if you can't get your hand on Besgrow sphagnum moss, that's kinda hard in Europe, and I've never seen anyone regrow sphagnum excepted from this brand
Just adding this for those in the US. If you want to buy live sphagnum moss, there are a few sellers on etsy! I’ve never purchased from them personally but i see their listings all the time. Worth checking out :)
Damn Benji! This indeed does require a lot of patience. Bought dry moss from Amazon. I am not from a first world nation, so i received a moist brown/dark green moss (initially i was happy, thinking I will see shiny green stuff immediately) but it was dead. In my country the temperatures go 110F+ so, first challenge was to find a good light source minus that much heat, and so I just kept in one corner of the room. Second I had to sprinkle water once in 2-3 days, cuz even tiny bit of opening would dry up my entire container. This happened for 7 weeks and the colour just turned darker and darker and started smelling like a fish tank. Fortunately the place I stay in, the Rainy season started early so I was able to move the setup outside in a shade. I forgot about it for more than a week. Fortunately due to humid weather, the moisture remained and when I took a closer look boom!!! I saw tiny green buds coming out throughout the container. I am a happy person today and I thank you for this.
I knew from the thumbnail that my search is over, I never could find out where those moss trimming videos came from but I always found them to be super satisfining to watch. Thanks algorythm for leading me to this video.

Now that I am starting a Fish Aquarium, I am looking to get the different species of Aquatic Mosses. I also miss having Terrariums around. Great Video. Thanks Dolores York Pennsylvania USA
Great tutorial, thank you so much! I set up several containers with different conditions: one in a little plastic cup fed with artificial light (close to one of my aquarium), and another one, larger which was glass and air tight, lit by sunlight. I let them be, as they where, not doing anything. First, I was feeling like it didn't worked out. But a few days ago, while I was speaking with my brother, explaining the process to him, being sure it didn't worked out, I noticed tiny little green spots in the moss... and I was like "meh... must be algae...", but checking it, more closely, I noticed that new moss, where developing in the jar. Note that, I didn't used the brand you're using, but the same dried kind of product. I also made a tiny layer of rocks and clay balls (not sure of the translation, I mean those thing used in aquarium and planting to retain water). Today, the green spots have become patches and hopefully I'll be able to set up the projects I was looking for my little ecosystems I tend to keep at home. I think patience is the key to success, and if it fails, you can try again with experience learned from before. I'm pretty sure the glass jar was successful because it was pretty humid and exposed to sunlight, not too direct though. I also think even in our households where temperatures are controlled, the seasons has to do something here. I set up the jar and the container, in the end of December. And now in Spring, the moss is getting greener every day. There's probably a lot of comments, like this one on that video, but I just wanted to thank you, because your videos helped me finding some peace of mind when I was feeling down. Keep up the great work you are doing with those :)
Great thinking to try several containers with different conditions! Sort of a scientific approach. Several containers in different conditions speeds up the wait and try again method!
This worked! Same brand of moss (“Besgrow”)from the link. Only took a month to start turning green but has a while to go. Also got a plant light but a different one (Sansi, clip on). Note; the block of moss is a LOT flatter than the one shown in the picture - more like a board-but it’s plenty when it rehydrates. I only took a corner off and it filled a 10oz plastic coffee cup I kept with a lid-works great. I had some left over I put in a vial with the a cork lid and a plant and that one I’ll say is reviving faster.

I was actually going to chop it with a tiny bit of live sphag and make a kind of mix to try to propagate the live sphagnum faster, but maybe i won’t need to do that 😊 Although i do have a teensy bit of the pink sphagnum and I really want to get that going, it’s sooo pretty.

Thank you for the information. After watched your video, just bought the exact same brand of sphagnum moss in your video. Hope that they can grow as nice as those in your sphere.
I did this accidentally. I was propagating my string of hearts, I thought it was algae at first but on closer inspection I realize it was actually the most turning green and having actual new growth. Now I'm researching how to build a terrarium or how to take care of moss, because I have no idea what to do with it. Update: Algae started growing on my moss and kind of took over☹️
If I had to guess, I would guess you can dry out algae-infested moss. Re plant it as shown in this video and use less water this time in hopes to propagate the moss without the algae again. The spores of both should be contained within the patch.
My appreciation for moss just grew. WOW, such aesthetic little plants! If you ever want to learn more about moss, there is a super relaxing and interesting podcast episode by Bryology with NY Times best selling author Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer. The terrarium you made for your moon is so cute! I love how natural the frog looks. My pillow moss is yellowing and I’m worried I’m killing it. :( do you have any moss maintenance tips? It’s just in a Tupperware partially covered by the lid. Thanks for the video. I can’t wait to try this and I think I’m going to start using sphagnum instead of dirt in terrariums now too. ^^
This is a wonderful clean brand of moss. I love it. I am just trying to find out how to repair my Kokedama and if I should use this moss but I can't find anything. The sheet moss I find on Amazon does not seem to be a great experience for many. I just want my Koke to look green and not bald.
In my country, Siberian moss is more popular. Its difference is that it is less moisture-intensive, but grows faster. I usually only picked the green tops and placed them in a container of water. I never changed his water, he could stand like that for an eternity, I assumed that he somehow purified the water. I did not do any air ventilation. But recently, to save space, I threw moss into the same container that I had cut off and had brown areas. And the water instantly became moldy, the smell was terrible. In principle, I think this also works with New Zealand moss; if you then use only green areas for germination, then you don’t have to worry about mold
I also experimented with fertilizers. I added fertilizer to one container for germination, but not to the other. And the moss where there was fertilizer grew much worse.
ive been growing my string of hearts with sphagnum moss for a few months and noticed grass looking things and more green in the moss. had no idea why. now i know (:
First time I tried this I failed and blamed you for giving falsified info. I'm happy to say I was wrong! I have had some plants sitting in wet moss in front of the window and it's actually turning bright green! So it does work. I guess it just needed more light.
Great job on creating the frog! Looks remarkably like one! Thank you for this video too! I love moss. Good to know it can be regrown from dried. I am going to get some and try it. Thank you again! Have an awesome day!

What? The dried sphagnum moss isn't dead? Wow! I have to try! Thanks a lot! ❤
You know what the best part of doing this method is that you can keep live moss in its habits for the animals/ecosystem .
Great job on creating the frog! Looks remarkably like one!
Thank you for this video too! I love moss. Good to know it can be regrown from dried. I am going to get some and try it. Thank you again! Have an awesome day!

Thanks for this guide! I've noticed some of the sphagnum moss in my propagation box had started to come alive after several months and was wondering what the next step was.
