Crazy Camry Cluster: ABS & CAN Diagnostics

  • What is this? A Toyota that's acting like a Chrysler?!?
Occasionally, with no rhyme or reason, this 2007 Toyota Camry throws a fit and the instrument cluster goes bizzerk.
But is it the cluster's fault?
We dive in and definitively prove the fault before loading up the parts sniper rifle :)
    Enjoy!
    Ivan

I was an old school mechanic, I never got into the computerized stuff... I never would have thought an ABS module could corrupt the data enough to mess with the gauge cluster. It's awesome to watch you further diagnose it with a breakout box to further explain to your viewers what is happening and why replacing that module would fix it.
This is definitely one of the better channels I've seen. Thank you.
I am unfortunately disabled, so I I fix cars vicariously through watching mechanics do it on UA-cam. And I still get to learn stuff which is even more awesome.

HERE'S WHAT I DID: 2 months ago it happened to me. Same screwy dash, warm a/c. Got another ABS module from auto junker, and it didn't work either. Lost $200.00 because they wouldn't take it back. Bumped into Module Masters on Google and sent it to them for repair. They fixed it for $200.00 +, and did a good job. Just slapped it back on and it worked. Side note: car ran pretty rough for about a week. Car had to relearn itself, but it's fine now. You can drive it with it messed up. You have to put a G.P.S. app on your phone to tell you your speed....hey it works. Big pain in the butt for several months. Went through 3 mechanics. They all said go to the dealer. Also you don't have to program the module, just bolt it back on.

From the U0073 (Bus Off) it's most certainly the ABS module itself, which has gone nuts. So each ECU has it's own TEC (Transmission error counter) which gets increased for every broken transmission or any garbage send out by it. After surpassing a certain value the ECU enters bus-off mode and forced to shut down and not participate on the CAN bus anymore, to protect the network from distracting and stacked messages, like in this case the ABS module. These cause the cluster to go crazy until the ECU enters bus-off. In some cases ECUs try to recover from bus-off, as e.g. the ABS is safety related. Often times vehicles enter limp-home but in others the module seems to be fine after being restarted for a few moments until it's acting up again.

Have same on 08 Camry. Looking at waveforms, it shows that this is a connection issue, as the voltage difference (good part of signal) is being lost due to intermittent connectivity issue (dropouts.) I read on Toyota forums that someone fixed this by pushing the connector towards driver side and wedging hard plastic between housing and connector. This makes sense as if there is a failure of an electronic part that usually is not intermittent. It is all or none. So, the randomness of it happening, with the exact same behavior, actually points more heavily towards connectivity. I did not see if you had a live feed of "good" wheel speed reading while moving with display dancing (that's what I call it.) If the wheel sensors are dropping, then that could lend more info to troubleshooting. I bit the bullet and sprayed the removed ABS module with electronic contact cleaner all throughout but only heard of this forced position fix yesterday so have not tried it. The cleaner did not provide results. I am thinking of doing what I do for other electronic connectors and that is stick a tiny screwdriver blade into pins and slightly "misalign" them so that there is more forced contact on the pin.

THIS! I was getting ready to trudge through a self-service salvage yard in the 103-degree heat for the module when I saw your suggestion. What the hell, right? The cluster was acting up. I put in the wedge. It stopped. I took out the wedge. It acted up. I did it 5 times and it worked everytime. I recommend Tubers try your fix first before investing time and money.

Hi Ivan those two prongs inside the pump housing are for the brake pressure sensor the prongs clip into the circuit board And tell the circuit board when full brake pressure is applied hence activating the ABS. I think you should look at the old circuit board with a magnifying glass attached to your computerAnd zoom in you will probably see broken or cracked soldered joints. Would be interesting to use the subtraction feature of the scope. Since those are differential signals, subtract them and see if the result looks good. It's a way to pick up glitches that are only on one side of the bus.
Had a CD player once that killed the CAN bus and the ABS was on the same bus and so it didn't work. The CD player was working fine but it was difficult to tell that it's communication with the rest of the car was dead. GM had put safety equipment on the same bus as the entertainment system?! Yes they had.

Had a MK1 Focus a few years back in the UK. Cluster would go nuts at least once on every trip. Engine would also cut out. Pure chance I found a post online advising that the speedo sender unit screwed into the gear box was the culprit, I was very sceptical but had run out of ideas, so I replaced the sender. Car ran like a dream for the next 3 years til I traded it in. Would never have suspected the resolution to that problem.

    • @zoidberg444
      @zoidberg444 4 роки тому

Interesting. My first suspicion with a MK1 Focus would have been water ingress and moisture build up behind the dashboard. My mate had an 02 reg where he had all sorts of crazy gremlins and a lot of the connectors were full of green crusties. We just deleted the connectors and soldered a spliced all the loom together. Cured most of them. He wrote the car off a few years later in an accident. Not bad for a few hours work.

Might want to let the owner drive for a week or so to be sure. What did the ABS connector on both the wiring and module sides look like? Networks can be fussy things. Low voltage and near zero current. The signal is the only clue to the problem. If the connector had pass through wiring for the network, it could have been jumpered and driven to see if the problem went away. I was thinking while it ran good, what happens when you push on the brake pedal? What did the ABS do when the system was running normally, and you forced it into an ABS stop? How well was it working when the system was good? Just throwing some ideas out here. Sometimes an intermittent can be forced into showing itself, like rough roads, railroad tracks, left or right turns, but you were lucky it appeared right away. Nice diag using the Pico! Hope the replacement module works for a long time.

I've seen similar weird behavior when there is no solid connection between the battery negative and the engine and/or when connection was somehow corroded or removed between the engine and the chassis. A lot of times they would complain about hard to move AT shifter linkage.
I always check to make sure there is a solid connection from the battery negative to the engine. It's important to visually inspect the wires because the meter won't always show it.

The weakness of having too many people using one telephone party line, the one that goes mad on lsd upsets everyone.

The fix is to stop using one serial bus for everything.
One wire shorted and everything stops dead, not what i would call clever.
Not sure about optical fiber, i think clashing could still happen when one device ignores the protocol of the system.
      The abs module ignored everything.

I watched this again till the end and saw the bonus video. I have to ask, how in the world can there be shops on Ebay offer to rebuild your own module, if the only way to get to the components to rebuild it is to break it open? This makes no sense. There must be a way to get the circuit board out of the module other than prying it open.

If I had the time to try a simple fix then I would replace that blue electrolytic capacitor and see if that cured it. They are really cheap and easy to replace and VERY prone to failure. That car has 141,xxx miles. Heat and time will ultimately destroy electronic components, especially electrolytic caps.

I have a 2009 Camry with the same problem. It started with the symptoms shown on this video but now I also have issues with the headlights (doesn’t indicate high beam on dash) & when the gauges go, so does the a/c. Is it likely that there are other modules that need to be replaced or do you think everything goes back to the ABS module? Thanks
