I’ve been binge watching your videos tonight. I am happy for you and encouraged. We all have things in our life that need to go, and facing it head on, one day at a time is a good strategy! Even if you have to take breaks, the important part is you go back to it. I found it very satisfying that you got to mop where the tower of clutter once stood. Also, I say about the books, you could put them all out on the shelves and deal with those later. You don’t have to decide right now. But, you could leave them in the box and date it, if you haven’t read them by next year, you can donate them! Just a suggestion. I think books are beautiful on a shelf, so putting them out on a shelf, to look at like art, is okay too!😊

I watch the UA-cam channel A Hoarder's Heart, and she always talks about how important it is to honor your emotions when decluttering, so that you don't lose progress or start to regress. So it's perfectly fine if you have to set some things aside right now, to make decisions later. You're choosing where to spend your decluttering energy on items you CAN tackle. You're making incredible progress!

Facts! I'm 3 years in on a 50+ yrs clutter/inherited/hoard build up. It's still too cluttered despite a hella lot leaving my home so far. My biggest problem is that none of our household drives so we have to rely on asking for a ride to get donations to our local charity shops and to the town dump. My living room is the catch all for all the donation items so we have to live with the build up before we impose and ask external family members to help us. Ah well slow and steady wins the race lol.

Don't feel bad at all for not dealing with the books right away. The first step is to gather like items with like. Once you go through the hardest parts of decluttering, it will be much easier to deal with individual groups of items. You got this!

I think you’re doing really well. You’re talking the major trip/fire hazards in your home first, making yourself safer and then dealing with some of the other stuff like books at a later date. It’s really easy to enter a state of perfection paralysis, where you procrastinate because you know you can’t do it “perfectly” first time so don’t start. Starting small is better than not starting at all. Keep with the baby steps

Yes they can, taking care of loved ones, which I wouldn't have had any other way, does cause you to get behind and things can pile up so quickly. I can definitely relate to this situation. I'm normally a very organized person, but over the years my responsibilities for others became greater and greater. I love all the positive comments people are making on here. Many times, things happen in people's life that is out of their control and understanding this and what that person has been thru goes a long way on helping them get back on track. Spreading kindness and positivity helps so much; judging does not.

Mira, the decluttering is also about doing the work to detach. I have made peace with the fact that certain items I'm going to handle multiple times. I look at each collection and curate it each round, letting go of the least valued with the goal of it diminishing until it fits the allocated space. This concept helps keep the overwhelm and decision making fatigue away as I don't get anxious having to make a decision I'm not ready for. And books are not a beginner category. You did very well letting the first round go. 👍🏻

It's okay to revisit things multiple times. When you see spaces appearing around the room it motivates you to create even more spaces. I've been very slowly decluttering my house for the past 3 years. Things I previously attached to mean much less to me on a 2nd, 3rd, 4th review so it does get easier with time. Just keep taking nibbles out of it and before you know it your whole room will be navigable and clear. It's certainly not easy going through a lifetime of accumulated items but you'll feel so much lighter in your mind as it progresses. Good luck to you I subbed to share your journey!

    #1 you are not alone
#2 know this is a starting point. you are taking action. So be aware that sorting and purging (that’s what I call. “Decluttering”) will take a few times before it will dwindle down to what you really want and need to keep.
#3. All the steps you are doing will very much open up to greater things.
#4 you are taking positive actions so please do your best to keep positive and not talk down on yourself. you are doing great.!
I sincerely hope I didn’t jump in too soon in saying these things but I just want to help. From someone who’s been there done that and has fallen back a few times in her life…and now I’m pressing the re-set button once again.

I have been on a decluttering journey for years. Things are always improving as I get more sensitized to clutter and more organized. My fave motto: don't put it down, put it away. I think letting go of things can be hard because it feels like letting go of potential versions of ourselves. Things are just accessories in who we could have been. Weirdly they often prevent us from those potentials as well. Best of luck in your journey!

Dana K White is at “a slob comes clean” and under her name on social media. I also like her steps. The first is just to find trash and the second is “easy stuff”. She starts with these because they don’t require much thought. Get rid of trash and the easy stuff refers to items that already have a home in another place - take them there now she says. After the first two steps in a space, look for “duh” donations / clutter. That means things that you’d say “why do I still have that, of course I don’t need it, of course I’m glad to donate it.” These first 3 steps are all easy in terms of decision making. Next, for things still remaining in the space, ask “where would I look for this first ?” Then take it there now. And, “if I needed this, would I even remember I had it already?” If not, maybe you don’t need it??? Once you’re down to what belongs in this space, put like items with like. And use the “container concept” - just keep what will fit in the assigned space for that category. There’s more to it but that’s the basics 😊

Wow, you did an amazing job. Don't think bad things about yourself you are working through it now and that is wonderful. I think it's Dawn from the Minimal Mom who says you have to build your decluttering muscles. Do the easy things first, like the trash and recyling. Obvious declutters, but you may be better to put the books to one side and tackle those later on when you have bigger decluttering muscles. Don't force yourself to declutter things you aren't ready to. Might be an idea to have a box or a spot somewhere where you can put items you find that you want to declutter. So whilst you are going about your day and you find something you know you no longer want you can put it there and it's dealt with. Does that make sense? You keep going at your pace and we will be here to support you on your journey. Well done, you are doing great.

Breaking the clutter down into smaller zones will hopefully make it more manageable for you. Here’s an interesting story for you - I had a man fall through my roof and ceiling (don’t ask😂); as both were asbestos I had to evacuate my house. I had just (!!) moved my bookcase into my bedroom.
EVERYTHING in my bedroom was contaminated ALL!!!! my books were thrown out. (I was compensated).

So - moral of the story; you can always get the books you donate back somehow :)

I also recommend asking someone else to remove the books for you. I have to do this, otherwise I just have bags and boxes of books sitting around that I don't want and wont read, but cannot bring myself to get rid of.

We have the same struggle with paring down our rather extensive book collection. One thing I've found is that books are heavy to lug around so you don't want to try to take too many boxes to the donation site at once. Each month I try to put together a computer paper sized box of books that we are ready to part with, I'll take them to our local library or thrift store. At first, it seemed like a drop in the bucket but over the course of a few months, we started to see a real difference. You just gotta stay the course, it will pay off.

My public library has people who will help you take the boxes of books in for donation. So if you are starting with a lot go somewhere like that where you can get rid of a lot while having help to do it. I could never carry in that many books by myself. I've cleared 9 boxes of books so far, and I still have 5 bookshelf units of books I am keeping, as I re-read them frequently. Books are something I won't live without, but having cleared so many out my space feels better and its easier to find the one I want.

While the principal of dealing with every item just once is the most effective in theory, I've found out from experience that revisiting things works better for many people. So don't beat yourself up if you need more time to deal with certain items.
It can be a bit concerning if this happens for every single item, but from what I've seen so far you do let go of some things and you seem to have the will to change the situation so I have faith in you.
I have gotten rid of items after up to 5 revisits. For me, the emptier the house gets, the more aware I become of every specific item and the easier it gets for me to naturally decide if I want it anymore. There are even things that I have kept through every decluttering session and then just see one day and decide to part with them when I'm not even actively decluttering at that time.
Everyone have their own way to deal with things and even this often changes over time, so as long as you make some progress and the house gets easier for you and the little fellas to navigate you are doing well and there is no reason to overstress over the fact that you may not do everything "by the book".
Wish you all the best in your journey and in life!

I find the more I let go the better I feel. I give to a charity who feeds the homeless and provides a program for them. So, I feel nothing goes to waste. The money I spent on items goes to charity so that helps me. I take it right away too. You're doing good. It will be freeing for you. Decluttering is a process that you have to revisit every now and then, so you do not repeat it. My weakness is books. I love books. You will have a booming E-bay resale business. I am amazed how much I have. The more I go through things the more I find. I even fond books I had twice. Yes, give yourself grace, keep moving forward. Say I am getting it done. Keep on keeping on. You can come back to it. I know I need to address my books. I took them all out but back in the shelf and closet they went. I did manage five books to go. I also have a thing for cookbooks I could never cook all the recipes in all the cookbooks, so I did get rid of some but kept a lot for now. I read cookbooks like people read books. Yiks right. I was keeping to sale some things but decided even that to give to charity. I give myself grace and I try to do one thing a day if I am not in that mood that day. One thing will do it. Then wake up and a lot a time and area the next day. If I do not finish it then I wake up the next day. It is working for me. I am with you as you do it, I do. Thank you for jump starting me. I did get rid of a lot of books though. I can go to the library, still have not read a lot of them. Proud of you and me. Peace!

Thank you for sharing your experience. I really appreciate it and am grateful you are willing to share with me. I know what you mean about books and cookbooks. It's crazy because I rarely cook, LOL. But I recently let go of one, and I'm glad I did. I hope it goes to someone who will enjoy it. I've got more boxes to go to donation and hope to drop off in the next few days.

The whole book storage issue is why I have predominantly switched to e-books and a kindle, LOL! Was able to give away three huge book cases and boxes upon boxes of hardcover books when I made that decision. Over the years, I have added favourites to my kindle so I can reread them whenever the mood strikes. You just keep going girl!

In reference to the books, you are not being ridiculous at all. We're allowed to keep things we enjoy. I'm a minimalist and I have "too many" hostess and serving items. Because I like hosting people and setting a nice table feels like art to me. I also have "too many" Christmas decorations. But I put them out every year and it makes my family and I so happy. I can declutter those things, but have a little more in some favorite categories is just fine. It's when we have too much in all categories or it becomes so burdensome that we can't enjoy the hobby that it becomes a problem. Bookshelves are made for books. 😀 and if you not quite ready to deal with those yet, then you are setting them to the side appropriately.

I think it makes a lot of sense to plan rounds of decluttering. In the first round you're rediscovering things and you need to live with them a little before you know if they're valuable for you. Plus even if you have to go through all the books again at some point, it's still so much better now! Progress not perfection as The Carla Project says
