One of the worst examples of this is the episode where Spongebob obsessively tries to get Squidward to come inside his house because "he's never been inside Spongebob's house before" when Squidward had been inside Spongebob's house on several occasions in past episodes.

I can stand the lack of continuity but the only time it has really bugged me was during Karate Island when Spongebob was shown as a loser and Sandy was the only one that could do Karate well even though in one of the first episodes they were pretty even when it came to that and had that constant rivalry.

If there's one thing in "Spongebob" that should have remained in continuity, it's Sandy and Spongebob being equal in Karate. When they first met in "Tea Party in the Tree Dome," they were both Karate experts on the same level, yet in "Squid's Defense," Spongebob says that he's been taking lessons from Sandy for 2 years.

There's 1 thing about Christmas who that nobody seems to relize. Pay closer attention to the Patchy segments, and you will see that Spongebob and Patrick KNEW ABOUT CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR! Patchy TELLS A STORY, about Bikini Bottom FIRST CHRISTMAS, which happened IN THE PAST!
    So the order is:
    1) Sandy moves to Bicini Bottom (Tea at the Treedome)
    2) Sandy tells them about christmas, and they celebrate their first christmas (the events of "Christmas Who")
    3) Patrick says Merry Christmas (Jellyfishing)
    4) Marmaid Man, Barncle Boy and spongebob sing a song that's a parody of Jingle Bells
    5) Spongebob and Patrick are preparing for celebration their non-first christmas (shown in the photoes). Meanwhile, Patchy tells about the events of "Christmas Who", events that happened in the past. Notice that Patchy is actually telling us a story instead of showing us a cartoon, like he usualy does. "They didn't always celebrate christmas in bicini bottom. Who wants to hear the story of Spongebob's very first Christmas?"
    6) spongebob says that claustrofobia is fear of Santa Claus, patrick says "ho ho ho" to tease Squidward (Wishing You Well)
    7) and somewhere in the future, they celebrate christmas again, "It's a Spongebob Christmas"
    And there you go :)
Just dont ignore Patchy, relize that the episode knows the difference between Past and Present
And you'll see that the christmas continuity is perfect :D

Lack of continuity is okay when they don't contrition each other. For example in some episodes, SpongeBob goes to his right to get to the Krusty Krab, and in other episodes he goes to his left. This is really annoying and it shouldn't happen, the Krusty Krab should only be in ONE place. Even the video games have the Krusty Krab in both directions. I'm surprised the animators never mixed up the order of SpongeBob, Squidward, and Patrick's house.

Shows like Arthur do a good job continuing the show since 1996 and developing the characters, environment, and lessons with different episodes while also referencing past events at the same time. Examples are D.W.'s snowball, Buster moving away with his dad for a while, Spanky (D.W.'s bird that died back in season 1), Francine's Jewish heritage, Grandpa Daves change in behavior, etc.

I remember the episode "Sponge-Henge" where Spongebob said " I have never been tardy ONE time in my career." And I was thinking "what the hell is he talking about? He's been late for work PLENTY of times."
I would like to see just a little continuity, it's pretty much like each episode takes place in an alternate universe. And wouldn't fans of the show like just a little reference once in while?

  • @abdullahibouraleh6919

Spongebob should have a little continuity. Not too much though. Also, Squidward is the only character who is one-dimensional today. Patrick is his usual self plenty of times every season (same with Spongebob), and Mr. Krabs isn't getting greedier by each episode. It depends actually. Squidward gets meaner and jerkier by every episode. There's one episode of Season 9 where he actually assaults a customer.

    • @tizyman7120
      @tizyman7120 4 роки тому

In that scene where he attacks the customer i think the customer attacked him first and he was defending himself as the customers are dangerous when they are hungry in these gags and was done to make laugh (which worked for me), the main problem of Squidward is that he became unlikable, he even wants Spongebob to die when in the old episodes he was just annoyed by his behavior and actually cared about him

Not to spoil anything for Season 9b (at least from a story perspective), but they're starting to incorporate more little references to older episodes in the background. A specific example would be Mall Girl Pearl, which has tons of background characters who had major roles in previous episodes, even ones that not every SpongeBob fan would know about like Carl from Selling Out.

And re-doing every episode either in a different manner or as a sequel to that episode! Don't EVEN get me started on the whole Mordecai dating thing. TOO CONFUSING! I still prefer it over most cartoons nowadays because of how great they are and how fast they are produced but personally i think the episodes that don't involve dating or sequels are the best. Originality always wins.

In Sand Castles in the Sand, Spongebob calls the frisbee a small plastic disc that you throw but in the Season 1 Ripped Pants he calls it a frisbee. In Squid's Visit, Squidward said he never visited Spongebob's house but he did in earlier episodes such as I was a Teenage Gary, Spongebob Meets the Strangler, Can you Spare a Dime and Party Pooper Pants. At first I thought it was because Spongebob episodes were on a timeline or something but then Big Sister Sam. In Something Smells Patrick said he didn't have a sister, but in Big Sister Sam it is shown that Patrick has an older sister, not a younger sister but an older sister. It seems like the characters reset in every episode which really annoys me.

Does Spongebob NEED continuity? I don't think so. If the show manages to be good enough on it's own merits, despite how long it's been going on, continuity should not be an issue. The primary factor here is the quality of the show., I think most of us know by now that Spongebob hasn't been what it once was for years, and that is where at least some continuity could come into play. Maybe have a series of episodes that take place in a new land, but could still stand as their own episodes. I know it's not like Spongebob to do that, but honestly I'd rather watch something like that, than watch my favorite childhood characters get flanderized to the point of unrecognizability. Say what you will about Fairly Odd Parents, at least they're trying to put some new forms of life into the show (Poof, Fairy Dog, etc)

    • @beta511ee4
      @beta511ee4 10 років тому

First of all, does this mean that Spongebob will end 15 years from now? Hard to believe that it could go on for 30 years. Second of all, just because Spongebob won 374 employee of the month awards doesn't necessarily mean he's worked for that long. Squidward could have won some as well. Third of all, Spongebob has been working at the Krusty Krab for 30 years since the days of Help Wanted, but the math is incorrect. 374/12=31.166666667, as in, Spongebob has actually worked for 31 years and 2 months. If the new writers were to look at this, they'll probably have the show go for another 15 years, which, unless they are going to make a complete overhaul of the modern episodes and character personalities, would be severely overstaying it's welcome.

I happen to have my own "Square Theory":
In the episode "Frakendoodle", SpongeBob creates a 2-D drawing of himself with which he briefly co-exists, similar to Lizzie McGuire's animated self. In the episode "Squilliam Returns", there is a gag which reveals SpongeBob has miniature versions of himself which operate his brain, which is Animated Lizzie's most apparent purpose. Finally, in "Pressure" SpongeBob is revealed to be able to reproduce mini-SpongeBobs on the outside. When I put the three together, that's when I realized it.......SpongeBob and friends are the characters of Disney Channel's "Lizzie McGuire" in the afterlife!
If true, this would explain several aspects of SpongeBob which are relatable to a teen or pre-teen. For example, his minimum-wage job as a fast-food worker (see "Working Girl") and his fruitless ambition to obtain his driver's license. In addition, the other characters have personalities which can be eqvilated to those of the Lizzie McGuire characters:
Patrick's role as SpongeBob's friend is equal to that of Miranda.
Sandy's interest in science is similar to Gordo's academic pursuits.
Squidward generally believes himself to be culturally superior to most of his peers, as does Kate Sanders.
Plankton is both highly intelligent and an outcast, a la Larry Tudgeman
Larry the Lobster is Bikini Bottom's resident male heartthrob, akin to Ethan Craft.
Gary is what Lizzie thinks Matt is, animalistic and wild. As, such he must be kept on a tight leash at all times.
In addition, there are many episodes which lend themselves to this possibility:
In "Ripped Pants", SpongeBob makes a fool of himself for attention, a common goal of most teens/tweens.
In "Naughty Nautical Neighbors" SpongeBob and Patrick have a falling out, similar to that seen in "And The Winner Is".
In "Boating School", Patrick encourages SpongeBob to cheat on his driving test, just as Miranda tried to cheat on a book report at the end of "In Miranda Lizzie Does Not Trust"
In "Pizza Delivery", Squidward shows an unusual sympathy for SpongeBob, similar to Kate's newfound affection for Lizzie in "Lizzie and Kate's Big Adventure" and to a lesser degree "Party Over Here"
In "F.U.N." SpongeBob bonds with Plankton, such as Lizzie bonds with Larry in "Scarlett Larry"
In "MuscleBob BuffPants", SpongeBob pretends to be muscular, just like Lizzie pretends to be over-feminine in "One of the Guys"
In both "Squidward the Unfriendly Ghost" and "Can You Spare A Dime", Squidward takes advantage of SpongeBob in order to get waited on by him, as Kate would likely do if given the opportunity.
In "The Chaperone", SpongeBob prides himself with making Pearl's prom spectacular due to the failure of his own, a nod to Lizzie's assumed unpopularity.
In "Sleepy Time" SpongeBob's age is revealed to be 13, which is Lizzie's presumed age at the end of the series. In the same episode, the SpongeBob invading the other characters' dreams is a miniature version created from his sub-conscious.
In "Walking Small" Plankton turns SpongeBob into a bully, which is what happens to Lizzie under a similar influence in "Bad Girl McGuire"
In "Squid's Day Off", Squidward tricks SpongeBob into doing all the work at the Krusty Krab, which is something Kate would attempt if she could.
In "Something Smells" both SpongeBob and Patrick become self-conscious about their looks, which many teen girls are prone to.
In "Bossy Boots" SpongeBob is more than eager to assist Pearl in converting the Krusty Krab into a teen hangout.
In both "Grandma's Kisses" and "No Weenies Allowed" SpongeBob fears being called immature, the same conflict as "Magic Train"
In "Life of Crime" SpongeBob and Patrick fear they've becomes thieves, as Lizzie fears of Miranda in "In Miranda Lizzie Does Not Trust"
In "I'm Your Biggest Fanatic" SpongeBob hero-worships Kevin despite him being a stuck-up jerk, as most of Lizzie's classmates (and sometimes Miranda and herself) do for Kate.
In both "Band Geeks" and "Squilliam Returns", Squidward tries to come out on top against Squilliam, just like Kate tries to reclaim her social superiority over Claire in "The Rise and Fall of The Kate Empire"
In "I'm With Stupid" Patrick makes a joke involving mascara. This is important as most tweens aspire for the right to use cosmetics.
In "SpongeGuard On Duty", SpongeBob is infatuated with Larry despite being male. This can be called akin to Lizzie's crush on Ethan.
In both "As Seen on TV" and "Squirrel Jokes" SpongeBob lets fame go to his head, which Lizzie fears will become of her in "Last Year's Model"
In "Rock-A-Bye-Bivalve", SpongeBob learns the challenges of raising a child, just as Lizzie does in "Misadventures in Babysitting"
In "Party Pooper Pants", SpongeBob tries to throw a great party. Likewise, Lizzie has assisted in organizing school events in "Come Fly With Me", "You're a Good Man, Lizzie McGuire" and "Night of the Day of the Dead" She also helped Miranda plan a house party in "My Fair Larry".
Also of note is that in Lizzie McGuire, Lizzie is a live-action character with an animated version of herself. SpongeBob has the inverse, with animated characters able to interact with live action stock footage. This does, however, lead us to the only true flaw in this theory. In "Shanghaied" SpongeBob and Patrick fear perfume, which is in sharp contrast to Lizzie and Miranda who would seem to enjoy the use of fragrances. I must assume this change is due to the conversion from female to male, as well as the fact that the episode aired only two months into the run of Lizzie McGuire.
In summary, character traits, episode plots and the logistics of the series' world strongly suggest that SpongeBob and Lizzie are in effect one being living within two separate existances. The only question that remains is: Can such a theory be proven or unproven?
Care to take this on, Mr. RULZ?

What bugs me the most is when they use a lack of continuity as an excuse to write episodes with no real ending, instead just cutting out on something stupid. Examples include Restraining Spongebob, Dear Vikings, Gullible Pants, Money Talks, and others. It's one thing when they end on a point that won't be addressed in the next episode like a character being arrested or injured, but in a lot of episodes it feels like the writers got lazy and couldn't come up with a good way to resolve the plot so just rush a resolution that doesn't resolve anything or cut out on a lame joke.

The Amazing World of Gumball's The Finale tried to deconstruct lack of continuity and show us what it would be like if actions had consequences in cartoons. The only problem is, by that episode's logic, the only way to make previously incompetent authorities competent was to be give our main characters being punished even more cruel and unusual punishments than they deserve. If I write for Spongebob, I would like the go for the Family Guy Season 16 route of things and have Mr. Krabs and Patrick go to jail for all the crimes they got away with committing, and they stay in jail for 6 episodes from that point forward instead of ending like The Finale did and going too far with punishment. Meanwhile, Spongebob has to figure out how to run the Krusty Krab on his own. That's twice as many episodes as Brian had to spend isolated from the Griffins when he finally had to pay for his pretentious, insensitive behavior. April 20, 2019, 1:39pm

I doubt that would happen. I mean, sure, season 9 is better than the previous 3 seasons, but I still don't think the writers are smart enough to be able to handle that. I mean, they screwed up continuity with "Big Sister Sam" because of Patrick saying in an earlier episode that he didn't have a sister.

Here are some things about SpongeBob continuity that really tick me off. If SpongeBob's pineapple is circular home come it has corners on the inside? There are episodes of SpongeBob where he goes into other cities such as Rock Bottom or New Kelp City I thought Bikini Bottom was the only city in SpongeBob Squarepants.

The only incontinuity that bugs me in spongebob is when they go back and forth with wether he has bones or not. Most of the time hes stated not to, other times he has a full skeleton, some episodes he has lungs, others he has gills. Its more or less irksome because of it. When I a viewer at home knows that he shouldnt because he is a sponge and why hes a sponge. At least they kept it clear that they need water to breathe though except in the newer episodes.
The final incontinuity I hate is just when they have running water underwater.... Season 3 slipped up some times, but often restated they were underwater clearly (Land vs Sea episode). They also stopped using the bubble effects and water reflection effects they did in season 1 and 2 which kills the immersion. Season 4 and later just didnt care at all and had Spongebob nearly drown in a house flooding, WTF.

I was thinking about Spongebob continuity this morning. I was thinking, are the very first episodes, where they introduce Spongebob to the Krusty Krab, the introduction to Sandy, and the introduction to boating school built off of before they went off onto this noncontinuity route? Also, didn't the first five Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy episodes have continuity? I haven't really watched much beyond the first three seasons, so we will see how bad this really gets in season five. It would be good to see some growth in the world of Spongebob.

MM+BB have a very, very loose continuity. Pretty much they come out of retirement in 1, then remember SpongeBob exists in 2, and by 3 they use him as a housesitter. That's about it.

Keep up the good work with this Spongebob stuff. It's a very interesting show to analyse. I always felt the character setup was very good in the series (in the early seasons at least). My main gripe is that Sandy seems to have no connection to Squidward or Mr Krabs and I wonder if they explore that in the later seasons or the new movie.

I agree with you, especially about the Flanderization.
I think a show that does the balance between being episodic and still allowing subtle changes/growth of the characters well is "How I met your mother".
They don't build epic story arcs, but they still keep some form of (small) continuity - "small" because it usually doesn't affect the individual episodes that much.

  • @kartoonfanatic
    @kartoonfanatic 10 років тому +1

You're onto something... I've always thought that major continuity would be the show's salvation: SpongeBob grows up a little, SpongeBob becomes manager or opens his own restaurant and stays that way, etc. But the background characters... say, Pearl graduates high school, Mrs. Puff stops teaching indefinitely or starts dating Krabs again. At least it's something interesting, something more relatable.
The relationships between these wonderful characters is what used to hold this show together despite lack of continuity. And it does only show after so many seasons that the relationships don't matter if the characters are so flanderized that they don't even seem to be aware of each other anymore.

Nintendo has a strict discontinuity policy - no show is allowed to reference its own past, and certainly finales are expressly forbidden from acknowledging in any way that the show is ending - so that they can play reruns at any time in any order (which they rarely if ever do) ... which, honestly, makes the fact that they ran a dramatic, narrative-driven series like Avatar kind of confusing.

IDK I think the newer episodes are (kind of) starting to show some continuity like Mr. Krabs and Mrs. Puff are finally dating each other for example. There are also a lot more minor characters returning besides Bubble Buddy, like Spot, and I think they have been some references to older episodes as well. Honestly, I don't think Spongebob needs A LOT of continuity. I mean to be fair, it is a goofy, random cartoon that doesn't make sense so it's understandable. However, yeah, like you said, if a show is going to be around for a long time, it would be nice to have continuity once in a while or else the show will get a bit boring and annoying. At least that's what I think.

The Amazing World of Gumball actually seems to follow what you were talking about almost a year before you even made this video. The show has dabbled a lot more with continuity since Season 3 when it used to focus a lot more on gags since Season 2. The Finale failed as a deconstructive parody because long story short, at the end the writing sort of collapses on itself when it actively goes against what it was trying to do all along by bringing up previously nonexistent consequences just to reset them when it literally backs the main characters into a corner. Well they never got rid of spot in the end of the episode, and we haven't seen plankton after that (as far as I know), so maybe, and just maybe, spot will be a new character. If not, then I will be so disappointed because spot was actually really likable! A slime dog... Thing... That can transform into various other things, AWESOME! The episode with spot actually made spongebob his old self again. He was willing to help plankton to have happiness, which in turn, he did have. So maybe... Now, to remedy what you were talking about, I would actually be quite interested in writing my own Spongebob Squarepants episode where Spongebob, Squidward, and Sandy call the police on Patrick and Mr. Krabs and make them go to jail for stuff they did before in Driven To Tears, The Krabby Kronicle, One Coarse Meal, Tunnel of Glove, Oral Report, Pet Sitter Pat, Spongebob, You're Fired, and others that I can't name right now. Then they will be forced to learn how to be better friends while Spongebob has to learn to live without them. I could probably make this a 22-minute special if I wanted to. Hopefully it will be a lot better than Gumball's finale, which was 11 minutes long and far too rushed. It also acts like PPG's Town and Out where it uses gritty realism for comedy to make the main characters suffer more than they deserve, except 100x worse. November 22, 2016, 4:58pm

The newer episodes attempt to shove in references to older episodes, like in one where Spongebob mentions that he knows how to deal with sickness because he's had the suds.
While I did smile at the little wink to the audience, it kind of feels like fan service. Like the Bubble Buddy's son episode; though to be fair, it wasn't that bad. It had EXTREMELY funny gags, so it surprised me.
I personally don't mind the lack of continuity because I never took Spongebob seriously. It's just a zany cartoon about a sea-sponge. Taking it too seriously like that is completely missing the point of the show. It would be nice to have a little every now and then, but all it ever wanted to do was be a silly comedy for families, and (for a while) it succeeded in that.

It would be okay if he was just a name thrown around and not a character that was shown (sorta like the "My Leg" guy), but they have shown him multiple times with multiple character designs. Is there more than one Old Man Jenkins? Even when I was little kid I caught this. It's probably the most frustrating thing for me.

I also think the lack of continuity makes establishing things pointless, what's the point of stating the Krabby Patty secret formula is a family recipe in season 4 if the next season contradicts it with an entire special? what's the point of establishing Glove Universe in Glove World R.I.P. if Glove World remains opened? I know the crew wants a story to tell without having to look back on every episode they write and force viewers to watch a previous episode but there are ways of doing it that wouldn't require heavily referencing previous episodes (example: going to Glove Universe without mentioning Glove World or its closure or mentioning the Krabby Patty secret recipe came from a feud without mentioning the friendship of Mr. Krabs and Plankton and Mr. Krabs lack of money when he was young.)

Maybe Stephen Hillenberg never intended for the series to have strong continuity.

BlythePennyBicycle21 I see. Season 1 have perfect continuity like SpongeBob attending the Krusty Krab and Boating School for the first time and meeting Sandy, Plankton, and Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. But was later somewhat abandoned from Seasons 2 to half of 8 I assume. However in Seasons 9, 10, 11, and 12 brought a lot back!

@@cartoongamegirl3335 Though in the case of then, it's still specifically framed in a way for kids of today to understand. For example, Bubble Bass, who was seen in season 1, has become a recurring character for the past 3-4 years, but nothing from his first appearance is brought up. Doodlebob, who was seen in season 2, returned in an episode from 2018, but nothing is brought up from his previous appearance.

I think all episodes are in order. If you say otherwise I'll tell you why it could still be in order.

Tyler S Simple, Mr. Krabs likes to temorarly move the Krusty Krab to people who normally wouldn't go due to living far away. This is why it takes different amounts of time to get to the KK in different epsiodes. I mean the KK has been broken and rebuilt so many times it's easy to transport.

karatekidaustin why in the episode where they go above water (forgot the name) they can go above water just fine but in sandys dome they need a helmet?

Tyler S The episode is Pressure, and it's an EASY solution if you think about it.
Islands usually have water vapor in the air around them since they're close to water. Spongebob and his friends could of used that. I mean think about it, if they can survive off snow in Sandy's Treedome then I think they can survive off water vapor. Wouldn't you agree?

    Gravity Falls has good continuity.

Gravity Falls is a show that absolutely NEEDS continuity, because the show is basically one giant story
