Gold Stacking You cannot I’d watched the film or even watched this clip with any deep perspective. He never called or seen his son and was a terrible father due to his lifestyle. The ironic and deep part of this whole scene is that he flew the plane better than any man or woman in the world could. He bonded with his family and son while sober in jail.
By far the greatest actor i've ever seen. Some actors have played in better films probably, but this guy is so much more impressive. You can see by his movements, his emotions and his voice how incredible he's involve in his role, when he say "alcoholic" you can hear him cry inside like if he's hurt to assume it but you can also feel like it's a deliverance for him. From Flight to Training Day, even in Equalizer in the restaurant scene. Denzel Washington is just amazing.
His admission of being a slave to alcohol and that his judgement was under the influence of alcohol on the day of the crash reflects just how strong of a person he really was deep down inside. His honesty with himself and the NTSB inquiry help him more than trying to cover up his addiction and evade responsibility in blaming the other flight crew member for the 2 empty vodka bottles. Now he can forgive himself, get help, and get beyond his weakness.
As someone who has had an alcohol consumption problem the acting that Denzel does in terms of an “alcoholic holding it together” is perfect. The lucid yet dazed eye movement, the lip fluctuation, the sweat, it’s truly a masterful performance

That’s the way alcoholism works, that’s why this movie is so crazy good. This guy is such a high level functioning alcoholic that saving that crash was a walk in the park while under the influence because his daily inner struggles pulling him apart are way harder to deal with then that circumstances in that situation
This man is my inspiration. I am not talking about the movie but his acting! What an absolute legend Denzel Washington is! I love his acting and for me Will Smith is right next to him. Great freaking actors!!
5:04 This is one of the most powerful statements in the film and the hardest to make for some who is an alcoholic. Admitting they ARE an alcoholic. The first step towards fixing any problem is recognizing there is one.
The lady in red was trying to allow him to go free because of his heroic actions by blaming it on the attendant who died. He couldn't do it, and fessed. I cried btw. This was so moving.
OhHey I'mJulez well yes but i think he felt if he didn’t confess, he would keep drinking and prob end his life or get hurt because of it. him confessing and going to prison to sober up was the best thing that could happen to him
Incorrect. She intentionally used speech tactics that would cause an emotional reaction in him and get him to confess. If anything, she was doing the opposite of trying to let him go. In most cases, if you give people the opportunity to bury themselves, they'll do so. The scene is when more moving when you realize the psychology she used to get the truth out of him.
The way they treated that pilot was disgraceful. He saved a whole jetliner from an impossible situation and should've at the very least been honorably discharged from the aviation service, had his licence rewoked, and had his recovery paid for by the airline. The man was a hero in an impossible situation.
@@yQaT735M "His actions don't excuse being drunk while flying a plane." Um, yes the fuck they do. He admitted he was drunk that morning. And on every other flight he flew he seriously endangered the passengers. I feel for him but you just can't do that when you're responsible for others' lives.
No it's not. It's a movie. It's scripted. It's not real. This movie is highly romanticizing the story, so let it be clear that being under the influence while being in charge of so many people is not something to feel pity about. Yes, that is what this film, and this scene in particular, makes you feel. But don't try to sketch alcohol abuse as something so harmless.

He knew he wouldn’t have been able to live with himself if he allowed blame to be attached to a victim who was suffering with alcohol addiction herself, and who died saving the life of a child. He may have made mistakes but he was a good person. It would’ve been too easy to allow the situation to play out and walk away a free man, but he didn’t. Wonderful acting from Washington.
@C i a n not saying the captain was the sole cause their were multiple failings that resulted in the crash prime the faulty elevator and poor maintenance. However, the captain drinking alcohol during the flight didn't help, even if he was calm and composed, because his judgement was impaired, through I will admit he saved many lives.
@@joshuagrover795 He is a high functioning alcoholic. Therefore, him being drunk on that flight was a non-factor. It was a mechanical issue on the plane that caused the crash, it was him who prevented the crash from claiming everyone's lives.
He could've said "I never saw her drink anything on the flight, so my opinion makes no difference." He would've gotten off with no charges, and the airline wouldn't have to pay a huge settlement. He wouldn't be hired again by the airline, but they'd pay him a big severance for saving them from bankruptcy.
Denzel Washington's acting has touched me in so many ways in my life that I have lost count. There is an innate decency in the man that is revealed in every one of his performances. I know that he is just acting but in my heart of hearts I know that he is an extraordinary human being. The world is a better place with him in it.
Way to go Den-Zèllll . What an amazing actor this is. An otherwise mediocre movie became a remarkable one by two feats: the BEST plane plummeting sequence EVER to be put on screen and superb acting by this charismatic man.
His performance from the time he starts admitting it was him, until the pain in his voice, the facial expressions admitting he's an alcoholic. Denzel Washington TRULY is a remarkable actor. One of the best we've ever had.
I literally just got finished watching this movie for the 1st time and this scene brought tears to my eyes....the fact that he didn't throw her under the bus when he easily could have shows him finally being a stand up man for the shitty mistakes in his life 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
They weren't mistakes. He intentionally chose to drink and with that goes the acceptance of the consequences. In this case, endangering the lives of 5 flight crew and 102 passengers.
I have quit alcohol two years ago and drugs almost six. I am struggling with addiction and sometimes it is very tough, but my life has not ever been better. Be strong brothers and sisters❤
You don't get flustered, it's easier to think because your more calm. Breathing is easier. You don't dwell on things and you can move forward easily. I'd consider myself a heavy drinker, haven't really thought about giving it up even though I should.
He was drunk when the pilot irresponsibly drove the plane the airpocket to hard thus compromising the plane. This was how the whole problem started. If he was sober all would have survived.
Denzel - Oscar worthy clip of confession of being an alcoholic. Great perspective of an activated conscience at the cross roads of the pilot's life. There is still that fundamental integrity though it took a lot to confess. Amazing clip because of the gamut of emotions Denzel translates in the character through the screen to the movie-goer. Brilliant.
One of the greatest few minutes of acting I’ve ever seen from an actor. Devastating to the core and stunning in terms of the range he showed. WHAT AN ACTOR!
This scene is a real message about addiction: at some point, you can't keep living in the dark anymore and you have to come to the light. Imo, the best part of the film was when he was in prison and he said that even though many people are angry at him for his lies, he's happy with himself for telling the truth when it counted. He found Christ, he got sober, and he rekindled his relationship with his son. Powerful.
she seemed to revel in the fact that she was backing him into a corner with her questioning yet when he laid it all out there her demeanor changed, almost to pity. Like she'd much rather tear down a man she saw as a liar instead of condemning a man confessing his sins.
I seen this movie when it first came out and it took me forever to come to a conclusion on what was the right thing to do. I know this is just a movie but what if it wasn’t, what would’ve been your conclusion? YES he was drinking the night before he had to fly this plane (that was wrong). Whether he had a few drinks, drugs or whatever the plane wasn’t a 100% when it took off so it was going down no matter what and that wasn’t his fault. When that occurred he was able to do the unthinkable which saved the lives of damn near EVERYBODY on the plane. They tested what he did to save those lives which had results of no other pilot being able to do what he did. YES he was guilty of the drinking but he didn’t cost nobody they life, that was the airlines fault. The airline should’ve been more than THANKFUL for him because without him everybody would’ve died and it still would’ve been their fault. I think this should’ve been one of them situations where you just gotta overlook the bigger picture and focus on the entire photo album. He didn’t deserve to go to prison...
I completely agree. If I was the government, I would either offer him a high quality rehab, or give him a truck of whiskey and let him drink into oblivion/death, if he wishes. Although that would mean no more piloting for him. :D
Which is why his "punishment" was as mild as it was - the judge even acknowledged that. See, you have to think in wider context. A "front" figure (a pilot, a surgeon, a bus driver etc.) who breaks the rules makes it easier for everyone in the background to break the rules. If the pilot is a drunk, why wouldn't the stewardess be drunk? If the pilot and the stewardess is drunk, why shouldn't the airport mechanic who is supposed to be refueling the plane be drunk? And so on and so forth. Before you know it, you end up with "Russia", where about 10% of drivers at any given moment have alcohol in their bloodstream, their cars are in disrepair, traffic regulations are ignored...
If you remove yourself from the intensity of the scene and focus on Denzel‘s acting, it is incredible. To see him sweat and move his tongue uncomfortably in his mouth. You can almost taste the metallic taste your mouth gets when confronted with extreme uncomfortable situations. We have all felt this at some degree in our lives.
From the greatest scene and best movie for Denzel Washington. everything about it the story, acting, soundtracks. the point of the movie it self the ending. it's just incredible.

The ironic and deep part of this whole scene is that he flew the plane better than any man or woman in the world could. He bonded with his family and son while sober in jail.
Gold Stacking you couldn’t live with the guilt for the rest of your life
Gold Stacking the guilt of pinning it on another co worker to get out of a sentence
Too bad society will never allow him to hold a real job above minimum wage ever again
Oh, shush. I drank it yesterday, laid off, and can't afford health care. Healing lolol
What a powerful scene. I can only imagine the amount of relief he felt after his confession
It may be my favourite performance from Denzel. Flawless.
Both of the Equalizer films are my favorite.
He is far above all the rest as an actor and as a person. He actually has Godly morals.
The lucid yet dazed eye movement, the lip fluctuation, the sweat, it’s truly a masterful performance
an "an alcohol consumption problem" ? Is that a politically correct term for alcoholic now? I just say Im an alcoholic - I dont worry about offending myself :)
@@tellurye You seem pretty offended about their choice of words and it triggered you enough to start ranting about political correctness.
@@Dexrazor You obviously are a sensitive snowflake - YOU were the one who was triggered. I never brought up PC, the OP did. I simply asked if thats what folks are doing now. Obviously I wasnt mad dkhead, since I did lol and a smiley face.
@@Dexrazor That's hardly a rant. Normally a rant would require more words and emotion.
@@tellurye You clearly were the one to bring up PC and OP never did. Since you tried to demonstrate how you would say it without being PC, it’s pretty clear it bothered you at least a little. What made me see you as being triggered about it was that you had to bring it up in the first place when no mention or attempt to be PC was in OP’s comment.
You can call me whatever you like, it doesn’t bother me. This is not me being a hypocrite or being triggered by you because you initiated with an insult which I am addressing, which is different from you addressing political correctness that the OP never brought up.
Plenty of people do sarcastic smiley faces and lols when they’re mad or annoyed about something. Maybe just let someone use the words they want to describe their situation as long as they’re being truthful, even if they were being PC (they weren’t).
Have a good one.
He should have got the oscar solely for the expression he gave after confessing to being drunk at that very moment..Such a class act, must have resonated with so many people...
It was so beautiful when he fully confessed everything. A huge weight was immediately lifted. Salute!
Such a severely underrated movie! Denzel's performance was outstanding. His depiction of alcoholism, denial and enlightenment was absolutely amazing!
Such a gifted man.
Always in awe of his acting ability
4:44 “I’m drunk now”
The way he said it, plus his facial expression after saying it. That’s top notch acting.
I loved Denzel's performance! But I also loved the woman in red questioning him. After he confessed he was an alcoholic you can see her face expressions there was some amount of pity and sadness there, she felt bad for him. I admire how she simply walked away without a word. What an amazing movie.
Melissa Leo is indeed a fantastic actor, she even won an Oscar for The Fighter.
They worked together again, in The Equalizer.
honestly this is a fairly overlooked performance you rarely hear about. as usual denzel killed it.
I swear, Denzel Washington makes turns every movie he's in into gold
As an alcoholic this scene gets me emotional every time.
Denzel Washington one of the best actors in the world.... makes everything so realistic
"I said God help me" goosebumps!
Denzel Washington is such an amazing actor. Whenever I see a drama movie and he is the main character, I know he will deliver.
This scene. He was tired of all the lies. There were no more lies to tell
Denzel Washington is my all time favorite actor 🙏🙏🙏
and years later they both play really really good friends in Equalizer love it
And This is not a first time John Goodman/ Denzel Washington acting together movie they were Detectives partners in " Fallen" as well was the late great James Gandolfini actually a great movie as well
Before that it was "Fallen". She plays a demonically-possessed woman that confronts Denzel in the street with proof of Satan's existence.😮😮😮
@@michaelo1619yep, she, Denzel and John starred in "Fallen".
Denzel Washington has always been a class A actor in my eyes. Love all of his films
He's conducts himself drunk better then me sober
That’s the way alcoholism works, that’s why this movie is so crazy good. This guy is such a high level functioning alcoholic that saving that crash was a walk in the park while under the influence because his daily inner struggles pulling him apart are way harder to deal with then that circumstances in that situation
@Adam Taylor totally mann.. these are all such awesome comments and really shed light on ppl addicted especially to alcohol.
“I’m drunk now” one of his most famous lines ever!.
He is one of the best actors ever. Magistral performance
The way he says " I was drunk.." at 4:35 really hit me hard, he sounds so sad.
This man is my inspiration. I am not talking about the movie but his acting! What an absolute legend Denzel Washington is! I love his acting and for me Will Smith is right next to him. Great freaking actors!!
But doesn’t it bother you that they are both gay boys?
5:04 This is one of the most powerful statements in the film and the hardest to make for some who is an alcoholic. Admitting they ARE an alcoholic. The first step towards fixing any problem is recognizing there is one.
"God help me" there's no better words for any situation
The lady in red was trying to allow him to go free because of his heroic actions by blaming it on the attendant who died. He couldn't do it, and fessed.
I cried btw. This was so moving.
OhHey I'mJulez well yes but i think he felt if he didn’t confess, he would keep drinking and prob end his life or get hurt because of it. him confessing and going to prison to sober up was the best thing that could happen to him
Even if the attendant is drunk, how can she be blamed? She’s not flying the plane
@@Dogscatsbikes
They need to go over all of the evidence. Transparency.
@@Dogscatsbikes They were trying to determine whether he was drunk or not. The Vodka bottles could have been drunk by either of them.
The way they treated that pilot was disgraceful. He saved a whole jetliner from an impossible situation and should've at the very least been honorably discharged
from the aviation service, had his licence rewoked, and had his recovery paid for by the airline. The man was a hero in an impossible situation.
His actions don't excuse being drunk while flying a plane. If he didn't do that heroic act then he'd just be an irresponsible pilot.

Um, yes the fuck they do. If he was sober then he would have not felt okay and then the situation would have been worse, costing more lives.

*he'd just be a normal pilot.
You have no point. Try again, sobertard.
@@yQaT735Msuch ignorance to presume he was drunk. Let alone tipsy, because coke doesn't last that long. It's called instinct.
He admitted he was drunk that morning. And on every other flight he flew he seriously endangered the passengers. I feel for him but you just can't do that when you're responsible for others' lives.
There is nothing more relieving for your soul in the world than telling the truth
Denzel is the very best actor 🇺🇸 American we have. He’s a genius. Even if the movie isn’t good, he delivers a strong performance.
5:00; D. Washington is amazing. He captures the sadness in ourselves when we admit weakness to self control. God bless you all who relate to this.
This scene makes me always cry because I was a recovery alcoholic and the movie affected me so much ! Denzel is just an stunning actor !!!
What a fantastic film and superb acting. Totally gripping.
I love this guy! What talent! God bless him.
Denzel at his best. Possibly the best actor of our generation.
The simultaneous pain and catharsis of revealing your most deep seated vulnerabilities is hard to put in to words.
This is what integrity looks like, just in case if anyone was wondering.
@@TheHastate the commentor was making a point of the individual's ability to not put blame on another person for ones own actions. Weeping Man well said.
@@rikkitiki1666 couldn't have said it any better.
Weeping Man well done
He knew he wouldn’t have been able to live with himself if he allowed blame to be attached to a victim who was suffering with alcohol addiction herself, and who died saving the life of a child. He may have made mistakes but he was a good person. It would’ve been too easy to allow the situation to play out and walk away a free man, but he didn’t. Wonderful acting from Washington.
The one that was questioning him wanted to break down & cry herself
How can anyone felt sorry for the captain's actions? His deliberate actions contributed to the crash, when he should have known better. 😡
@@joshuagrover795 his impaired judgment may have contributed to him taking risks, as opposed to following book protocal.
theMcWOPPER book protocol would have killed everyone lol
@@joshuagrover795 He is a high functioning alcoholic. Therefore, him being drunk on that flight was a non-factor. It was a mechanical issue on the plane that caused the crash, it was him who prevented the crash from claiming everyone's lives.
He could've said "I never saw her drink anything on the flight, so my opinion makes no difference." He would've gotten off with no charges, and the airline wouldn't have to pay a huge settlement. He wouldn't be hired again by the airline, but they'd pay him a big severance for saving them from bankruptcy.
He couldn't so it because it tarnished her memory. He felt guilty using her as a scapegoat.
Plead the fifth
Honor! Would not throw somebody else under the bus to cover for his problems.. Way to step up to the plate.
Denzel Washington's acting has touched me in so many ways in my life that I have lost count. There is an innate decency in the man that is revealed in every one of his performances. I know that he is just acting but in my heart of hearts I know that he is an extraordinary human being. The world is a better place with him in it.
He saved the passengers because he was so cool and drunk. I wonder why he did not receive Oscars for the courtroom scene? He touched my heart
He was nominated. But Daniel Day Lewis Won for Lincoln.
What a film What an actor Denzel needs to live forever to keep giving us this level of acting.
Can his testimony even be considered credible if he was drunk during the conferrence?
Brian Gallas Lol, I think he was sober enough to tell the truth.

I don't love love this movie.. but I keep coming back to this scene because it's truly exceptional acting.
Arguably one of the finest actors of all time.
What a scene .... I genuinely think Denzel might be the best actor on this planet across the last 20 years or so ...
I have quit alcohol two years ago and drugs almost six. I am struggling with addiction and sometimes it is very tough, but my life has not ever been better. Be strong brothers and sisters❤
if he was sober,no one would of survived...
claude stevens hows that make sense
Kurtis Powers If you were a drinker you would understand
You don't get flustered, it's easier to think because your more calm. Breathing is easier. You don't dwell on things and you can move forward easily. I'd consider myself a heavy drinker, haven't really thought about giving it up even though I should.
He was drunk when the pilot irresponsibly drove the plane the airpocket to hard thus compromising the plane. This was how the whole problem started. If he was sober all would have survived.
That all depends on what was in the script. ITS A FRICKIN MOVIE. YOU CAN'T APPLY ALTERNATE PATHS, IT IS WHAT WAS WRITTEN.
Denzell is such a phenomenal actor you feel the energy from his characters
Denzel - Oscar worthy clip of confession of being an alcoholic. Great perspective of an activated conscience at the cross roads of the pilot's life. There is still that fundamental integrity though it took a lot to confess. Amazing clip because of the gamut of emotions Denzel translates in the character through the screen to the movie-goer. Brilliant.
Being an addict myself, nothing compares to the weight lifted off your shoulders when you decide to be honest to yourself and your loved ones.
DW got robbed of an Oscar for this role. Best movie and performance that year, hands down.
He was only one last lie away from returning to his good old life. He couldn't. Conscience is the one true warden of a good-hearted person.
Probably the finest living actor, and a real contender for best of all time.
Powerful.
As an alcoholic, treated and fighting it still , this movie and his acting is something EXTRAORDINARY and touching
Just another performance to show that he is one the greatest actor of our time!
The role he played was just perfect.
All those lies just busted out of him, he could not hold it in any longer.
Denzel just amazing in this movie. Always enjoy watching him ever since St. Elsewhere.
What an amazing, extraordinaire, remarkable piece of action. Mr. Denzel Washington must be one of the greatest actors of his generation.
Stilk tearing up watching this scene.... the desperation and sadness is a killer and Denzel is a fantastic actor because if that.... .
she seemed to revel in the fact that she was backing him into a corner with her questioning yet when he laid it all out there her demeanor changed, almost to pity.
AlwaysOneDeep Very good remarks from you. Well written!! 👍🏽
Gotta punish crime and reward good deeds wherever they're found.
@Charles Beckwith the equipment was faulty anyway that plane still would have crashed
Glory, Training Day and Flight are my 3 favorite Denzel movies but damn he has so many. One of the greatest actors of all time in my opinion.
Mr Washington is always so great no matter what film he's in.
It's weird how a movie scene can connect with you. This scene is what made me realise I have a issue with alcohol. It's made me seek help

Few actors have the ability to make a person in the audience feel something, Denzel has it! When he says I'm an alcoholicI get a tear in my eye! Not many actors can do that!
After the confession, Ms. Black looked at the captain with compassion. What an excellent scene. Denzel is a very good actor.
