    This is the first show I ever watched were I actually enjoyed watching the adds too. A nice single commercial for a product that relates to why I am watching the show in the first place, ie. Cars! Such a change from the usual 5 minutes of drone about different irrelevent products that I never knew I needed. There must be a lesson here for marketing companies.

    I like the prototype. The smoother, more seamless and aerodynamic a car is - the cooler it looks, and the more fuel efficient and quiet it is at speed.

    On car sharing, what about pre-existing scratches, dents, interior damage, etc? I get paranoid when I rent a car and find a dent in it after I take it.

    I hope this time much of the concept content actually makes it into the production vehicle. Don't dumb it down please.

    Im 35 and own a 2014 MKz fully loaded with the wheels and roof. I have to say I love the look of Cadillac but when i test drove the CTS and ATS the ride did not sell me. The Lincoln drives smoother. Lincoln made me feel special too where as Cadillac made me feel like just another person on the lot. To his point when I sit in the Lincoln I just feel good. Not so in the Cadi.

      Cadillac's, specifically their sedans and coupes, are generally being setup with a performance lean. So, the ride is going to be firm, maybe choppier. They have not yet figured out or, as par GM-HQ's course, not being allowed to make the ride compliant for smooth for typical luxury buyers who want to softest smoothest, most pleasant, ride possible. They can do it, the Escalade is a benchmark for large to full-size Luxury SUVs and it is still a SLA Rear suspension.
      I think for the most part, if Cadillac can do those straight luxury load-out sedans, softer smoother suspensions that will not cost Cadillac much to do and in most cases would be little more than a few lines of software, which was discussed on ALAH a few weeks back, they will start selling in big numbers. As it is, they are only strongly appealing to drivers who want that luxury *performance* car.

    True world-class luxury cars are NOT based on front-wheel-drive platforms, and they damn sure don't have front struts performing the required task of ironing out the seams in the road! This is where the marketing department has their head up their ass!

    If and only if the production version of this concept stays true to the concept, then it will sell, and sell brilliantly. But if they water the design down, the detail the materials used in both the exterior and the interior, then it will fail. What i look at here as a concept truly SHOULD be a full production vehicle. But we now live in an age when Plastic has ruled over metal. and it shows. Lincoln can be successful if they make themselves truly high-end high dollar. If watering down remains the mainstay then whats the point. This concept is a winner, and its time such a car comes forth to market from the states.

    The Lincoln Hero Car will be a GT car, since it's not going to be a sports car. We could use more great American GT cars, so good on them
    Cameras in shared cars will compare pre- and post-drive photos to determine whether the cars have been crapped up, switches ripped off, etc.

      ***** I don't think that this is a coincidence and they were resembling the old school lincolns. Lincoln suddenly changed it's identity and design direction to become a true luxury brand and the first thing they looked up to, was bentley. It also has the new Audi concepts design cues. This car in no way looks original.

      Brendan Peery are you serious? This might be a good enough answer to you but it doesn't mean anything what so ever and does not answer that question. This was an issue that was heavily critiqued and majority of people who understand design agreed with Bentley's claim.

    • @brendanpeery2655
      @brendanpeery2655 9 років тому

      you had offered that he hadn't answered. I pointed out that he did. You offer that you aren't satisfied with his answer (which was no) and that's not my problem.
      I don't want to enter into an argument based on whether any of his inspirations had been drawn from other cars that he's seen or worked on because that seems like a discussion you'd be better off engaging him for.
      You posited that he hadn't answered a question that you feel or felt was an important one and I had only offered that it had been asked of him and it was addressed.

    Not only does the new Continental not look like the Flying Spur but the Flying Spur from the rear 3/4 panel looks allot like a 2002 Continental. Perhaps Bentley's former designer thought that Lincoln somehow knew what Bentley's next Flying Spur is going to look like after Bentley is done copying Lincoln.

    I am amused by these predictions of cities BANNING cars. Even the congestion charge in London only worked initially; once people got accustomed to the cost the cars returned and traffic slowed again. Simply put: In a crowded city you cannot have everything and that means you can take a car right downtown but it will be a slow pace.

    I have nothing against the chrome. It looks fantastic. And as long as its chrome-metal it would work great. Plastics and Cheezy woods are a no-go in my book. Wood more than often sucks, though i am for the look and quality of bamboo.
    But if you looking as a luxury car of this level and your looking for wood, then please get out of the 1970's! and god awefull 80's , Chrome has a place when its used in a place of luxury.

    GM is still working on overcoming the bad cars of the 70's and the bankruptcy. Cadillac was doing well by giving us more for our money. They need to do that some more - to pay down the debt they owe their customers for all the bad cars..

    I believe he means in this interview that this car will not compete with brands such as Audi ,BMW or Mercedes Benz more brands like VW or Skoda auto niche brands with smaller or limited markets & ceilings inculding engines. Not that he doesn't want to design more powerful engines to compete. Just Lincoln does not yet have that luxury from Ford yet in reproving itself with Fords and not get assigned to history with Mercury. When sadly only losing money in your parents/owners eyes.

    • @mews56

      In short that it will compete or try to out do Audi BMW & Mercedes Benz in looks but only Skoda, VW & possibly Volvo in the power under the bonnet.Making the best with what they currently have or can afford.

      Frankly I think VW Bentley is only screwing itself up further knowing better. most likely knowing nothing can be done but prepare one's self for the long haul. For design and name arguments like the "Rolls Royce "Phantom Continental era names. Which am sure is known about. Not knowing what to do to secure VW bentley over BMW rolls royces vs Ford Lincoln . Because it is not like Rolls Royce and jaguar are making a fuss over the contintental and mark series names in branding next to Lincoln. This is certainly a story I bet would always sell on the local auto news

    What's killing Cadillac sales is a couple things..Number one,there are many in the upscale crowd that have not forgiven GM for taking a taxpayer bailout,stiffing many people on the former GM stock shares,and then having the govt liquidate at a 10 billion dollar loss after filing bankruptcy.
    You then have the fact that they are using the old pushrod motors when their rivals are all using DOHC power plants that are smaller and make more power at higher RPMs. I get that the pushrod engines are great and I love them as well,but you can't convince the high tech crowd that would probably be the biggest purchasers of the car that a 1950s engine is what you get in this car.
    They should have continually evolved with the Northstar as Ford has done with the MOD motors and everyone else has done with their DOHC power plants and that way you can say you in the current high tech designs.
    The Cadillacs are superb cars as are the new Lincolns that are coming out but people that pay the money for these type of vehicles want the latest and greatest in high tech. I think it's silly but I'm not the one they have to sell.

    • @tericacruse6
      @tericacruse6 9 років тому

      Their is nothing new or high tech about dohc engines. Dohc engines usually have higher center of gravity, weigh more and bigger than push rod engines. I believe Cadillac's v6,v6 tt and Turbo 4 are dohc. I think cadillac is pricing their cars to close to the Germans, so when people see those prices they automatically think might as well pick the German engineering. Cadillac has been making cars just as good if not better lately but the perception is caddy can't make reliable products because not to long ago they went through a time when they we're putting out some very shit cars. I think it's going to be awhile before caddy gains people trust again but I think they will eventually tho.

    • @mikesamra9126
      @mikesamra9126 9 років тому +1

      Terica Cruse
      I get that DOHC are not new but they are much newer and much more mainstream than the pushrod engines,You don't have to sell me on pushrod engines however,I think it hurts the image of Cadillac because many see the power plant as ancient. The only companies that use pushrod V8s anymore are GM and the Chrysler hemi. I teach auto electronics and emissions and I have reps from from many manufacturers come and talk to my students.I'm in Michigan and Ford and GM donate cars to us for the ASEP and ASCET programs and I see the quality in the Ford and GM products but all in all,we have to convince the world that our products are as good or better which i believe they are than the rest of the world.
      Take the Crown Vic..There are tons of them with over 300k miles in NYC that have the original drive train in them and these are hard taxicab city miles. Americans can build cars but we have to be seen as an image of quality and we are every bit as good as the Japanese and Germans but it will take time.

    • @tericacruse6
      @tericacruse6 9 років тому

      I totally agree and i don't think anyone on this planet could call American engines unreliable. The problem with American cars is the package around the engine. I've had 2 Lincoln town cars a 96,2000 plus a couple GM cars and the engines are pretty much bulletproof. I love push rod engines more tho because they are a little easier to work on, the modular engines are great also. Ford,gm and Chrysler have jumped leaps & bounds these past few years in the right direction but it's going to take awhile longer before they can shake the public perceptions of them.

    • @d.e.b.b5788

      jesse diaz Part of the problem is that every car manufacturer wants to sell more cars every year, whle making cars last longer at the same time. Eventually you reach saturation of the market.

      @d.e.b.b5788 9 років тому

      Their styling is polarizing. Either you think it's cool, or hate it, and the people who love it already bought it. At least that's been my experience when I'm with people and I ask them about it. Caddies still have the rep of being either an old man's car or a pimp's car. They were making headway when they went into GT racing, but like Ford next year with the GT, you have to win, not just show up. An example: Porsche 911's are a terrible design. But they've given their customers great support, and lobby the ruling bodies of racing for favorable handicaps. So people still see Porsche 911's as great cars, even though they're not. American auto maker are still living in the past; recent interviews of Ford's execs about the Lincoln Continental show that they still believe 'bling' is more important than the beauty underneath. Right now, neither Caddy nor Lincoln make a good looking car. And that's what's killing them. They just don't get it. One guy on another thread says what they both need is a 'hero' car. One that's big, fast, beautiful, competent, and just works in every way. Lincoln almost had one in the 1990's Mark 8. But in 97 instead of fixing the issues, they just restyled it, and made the grill ugly. Nobody wants an ugly car, especially when it's worse looking than the previous model. A frequent thing I've heard is, 'we don't want to put everything into this year's model, or we won't have any thing to make buyers want next year's model'. So basically they're trying to sell defective cars. They're not putting their best foot forward intentionally. And that's a big problem.

    • @d.e.b.b5788
      @d.e.b.b5788 9 років тому

      jesse diaz You can afford a used one. A caddy that's a few years old is the same looking and engineered car it was when it was new. Remember too, that a new design will always have bugs in it. Buying one a few years later hopefully they've fixed what was initially wrong. I've owned several great cars that were not new. 66 mustang. 76 280z. 86 928. 98 Mark 8 isn't great, but it's very good in some ways. It helps to remember that you're never the first driver. That's the guy who drives it out of the factory into the transporter, then the guy at the dealership who drives it OUT of the transporter, and they guy who moves it around in the lot. So in a sense, remember that every car is 'used' by the time you get it. Would I take a 'used' Ferrari Daytona? In a second. Look around. There's usually ways to get the car you want. If there's no one to finance it for you, you can always finance it yourself: Take a loan out on your pension. That way you get to pay yourself back and put away extra money into your retirement at the same time (you're paying interest to yourself). I did that when I went back to school in my 30's. It's a win-win all around. You get the car you want, you can finance it for as long as you like, and you increase your retirement funds legally beyond what you can contribute every year. Neat, huh?

    As for the notions of the 'American' designs, aside from a hand full of iconic long in production cars and trucks, domestic american designers and their designs has failed thru the years. American design for far too long had been ugly to say the least, Lincoln is a perfect example. too much focus on attempting to please buygone senior generations who are in fact not buying new cars. Designs that dont follow any normalities, shapes and forms that never flow together, lines that have little to no purpose, forms that clash with one another, and absolutely no attention to proportions. American car design was all about faking it. Always was the phrase 'styling cues'. Styling cues are designs that are fake mild interpretation of what once was a full featured real thing, and notably from the past. so styling cues are 1st fake, and 2nd old. and since its not real all you have as a car is a watered down impression of what it shouldve been.

    John:
    Cadillac can't decide what they want to be, a luxury brand or a hot rod. There was a time when chevrolet was the hot rod and cadillac was luxury. Chevy could sell more impalas with a 3.6 v6 or 5.0 v8 with a stick or automatic faster than they could make them. Front-wheel drive not an option. I will not but a hot rod cadillac pretending to be a luxury car. Mercedes pulls off high power luxury which is not a hot rod. Cadillac and General Motors are confused about their mission. They have great product. Waste time cutting corners on the wrong product that has no market. I need to run the general. They are way too confused. Thanks John
