    I'm seeing a few comments along the lines of "The snap was to his left and he just went with it". So that as a punter is absolutely something that is just forbidden, you see coverage players all release towards where you're going to kick, meaning they're not only running that direction but giving their potential blockers leverage on the opposite side. So lets say you're supposed to kick the ball right and instead kick it left, not only are your players out of position, but now you actually just set up blocks. So in no world would a punter just decide to kick it to the opposite end of the field unless it was already planned and as you can see from the first punt in this clip, he punts it right, everyone releases right, then watch this punt and his gunners release to the left further showing it was planned from the start. Next time I'll go into further detail about how I know it's a trick punt.

      As someone who has played rugby and football. A rugby ball is FAR easier to kick than an NFL football. They're much more forgiving, mainly due to the size of a rugby ball. NFL footballs are stiff. And the seams of the ball are very stiff. An NFL punter has 2 seconds at most to catch it, pick his direction, and kick it. It's not as easy as you think. We've had enough Aussies in the league who've played both sports that can also confirm. Brad Wing actually discussed this in an interview when he played for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
      Unless you're talking about "soccer" (football)

      @FranticMonster11 The principal is still the same. An AFL ball is much more similar to a rugby ball. Especially since AFL balls are made from Kangaroo hide which is way more forgiving to kick unlike cow hide.. Hence why some NFL kickers have custom made Kangaroo hide kicking shoes. If it's so easy, why isn't the NFL flooded with AFL players?

    In high school, I was a right-footed punter. Kicking the ball to the left by angling your body like he did is not difficult at all. I have no idea what you're discussing. On the other hand, it's fairly incredible to kick it further than sixty yards.

      Yes agreed. The kick was great but the slight change of body angle is nothing remarkable.

    •  2 дні тому

      It is not even close to incredible for an NFL punter to hit a 60 yard punt.
      In fact this last NFL week there was a minimum of 13 60+ yarders alone, including 3 67s, a 68, and of course this 73 yarder. I say minimum of 13, because in the box scores they list each punters longest punt, but do not say whether any of their other punts also may have been 60 yarders.

    • @ph1shstyx
      @ph1shstyx День тому

      I also punted in high school and agree, I would regularly kick left if i was on the right hash and the returner was cheating further right. The insane part of this punt is how perfect the bounce was, out of bounds at the 1 is the harder part of this punt.
      There's video of punters actually unleashing a punt and they all kick it around 70 yards, but in a NFL game you're trying to balance hang time and distance so you're not outkicking your coverage.

      yup, he's left foot forward because he's right footed, he's not angling his body extra. It's just rarer to see you kick left when lined up on the right hash because there's more field that way, so the coverage would be spread out more. You're trying to pin the returner into coverage. The reason he goes left here is because the snap is to his left, not down the middle, so he has to adjust his positioning.

    Not sure what you are talking about, but this was not a newly invented punt. This is literally what a punter's job is, to punt it away from the returner, and try to pin the team as deep as they can. This has been this way since I've watched football, and that is quite a few years. There is a UA-cam video incident when the Giants had the game won against the Eagles, all the punter had to do was punt the ball away from Desean Jackson, and punted it directly to him. Jackson returned it for a TD and the Eagles won. You can see the Giants coach Coughlin after the game asking the punter WTF he had done that for.

      This style of misdirection to my best knowledge has not been done. Typically the closest we've gotten is punters in the 80's/90's would keep their feet straight down field and try to flip one direction or the other to hide the direction a bit, but never a full face right and try to go all the way to the left.

    I remember Steve O’Neill of the New York Jets kicking a 98 yard punt against the Oakland Raiders. It’s a record that can only be tied not broken in as much as a 99 yard punt would bring the ball back to the twenty yard line. Oakland defense pushed Namath & the Jets back to the one yard line & on 4th down O’Neil punted it all the way & it went out one the Raiders one yard line . That was something to see as well

    •  2 дні тому

      Technically, I suppose a punter could kick one from the one inch line to the other 1 inch line, which would be a 99+ yarder. But statwise it would likely still be called a 98 yard punt.
