  • Learn how to manage asthma for singing. Fortunately for many sufferers of Asthma, our understanding of the two main components of asthma, inflammation of the airway as well as airway constriction, have led to the development of excellent medicinal treatments.
As is often the case with many prescribed medicines, when taken long-term, there can be side effects. The severity of the side-effects caused by asthma medication has also improved significantly over the past fifty years, but if you’re currently taking inhaler medications for your asthma, you should be aware of the potential side-effects on your voice.

I have allergic asthma, and have many severe allergies. I was a trumpet and vocal major in college. All those years singing and playing my horn strengthened my lungs, so my asthma isn't as bad as it could be. But, I struggle with medicines negatively affecting my voice. I get allergy shots, which help. But I stopped taking my maintenance inhalers and only use rescue when I need it.

I had the same problem (but I’m not a voice major) and my voice was so affected by both my steroid inhalers and my uncontrolled asthma. I wasn’t cast for the first time and it really damaged my confidence. Unfortunately I have severe asthma and I can’t stop taking my maintenance drugs.

I cry a lot sometimes but I stopped, I don’t want it to limit me, besides, crying because of asthma triggers asthma attack.

Even though i have a sweet voice (without arrogance), i'm always out of breath when i sing
That's make me feel so bad , if only i could sing without struggling...

I used to sing all the time as a child (really aspired to be a singer) and I'd practice for hours everyday because I knew I had to strengthen my lungs in order to sing because of my asthma ( to the point of I'd sing while jogging in gym class). I stopped singing when I was 13 because I developed this anxiety about making noise (an odd turn of events). Tried singing class for one day in high school and dropped into another class. Then every time I'd try (which would be every couple of months) even if I was alone the sound of my own voice hurt me to hear so I'd stop right away. Well I'm 18 now and my desire to sing is stronger than ever so I'm trying to get myself back into it no matter how bad I sound.
But now I'm realizing one thing childhood me thought that turns out to be true: singing actually DID strengthen my lungs and make it easier to breathe. Since I've stopped singing I get winded immediately (a flight of stairs, too long of a sentence), my throat dries faster (can't talk for long), and I'm exhausted a lot faster.
Guess singing is both apart of me AND my health.

    • @comikachi
      @comikachi 6 років тому +3

Dunno where I was going with this, but the video was really informational! (I also now realize why a singing teacher I had as a child was so insistent on the way I breathe while singing. Thankfully my asthma is minor and I haven't needed an inhaler since I was a kid and I've never had an attack)

Thanks, Dan. This video's an absolute Godsend! I'm asthmatic- (only mildly, luckily for me, but asthmatic, all the same), and sometimes, that makes singing very tricky for me- (especially on a particularly bad day!) I also find that my Ventolin inhaler gives me a very sore throat sometimes. Luckily, it don't affect me singing-voice that often, but it does give me a very sore throat at times. My dodgy breathing, on the other hand, does pretty often, cause me a lot of problems when I'm singing.

Thank you so much for this video. I too suffer from asthma and also sing once a week at a local bar. I do use my Ventolin inhaler as needed. I find what does help me a great deal before singing is going for a run (or jog) I do run regularly , not fast mind you, but still run and I notice that afterwards my breathing is so much better!! I think this has really helped strengthen my lung capacity a great deal. I notice that when I don't run my asthma acts up again. In the wintertime I use my treadmill because the cold air makes breathing much worse. Of course I should add though that feeling nervous before singing also makes it act up and I wind up having to use the darn inhaler. Im still working on that one! Enjoyed your video.

Calamity Jane, me too , i am allergic to cold weather and same as you. When i do run , i can feel i get better breathing and kind of you feeling good. I think you are correct , that running makes your lung stronger and builds your immune system too. I feel the same, but i have been slacking for while , my asthma is coming back and i notice just stroke walking makes a huge difference in your lung capacity. I am running now , and i feel better. Also as you mentioned, the stress also brings asthma , and especially when you need to hit the notes in the lyrics perfect and i do build some kind of stress , you can feel it , it affects your vocal , cause for the lung function changes and induce your asthma instantly. I have start working on this, i close my eyes , calm myself and keep my breathing normal and then start singing. It works good. Thanks for sharing.

    Hey there Dr Dan,
Thank you for discussing this topic today. I don't suffer from asthma, but can empathise with those who do; a challenge in their lives and with singing of course.
It's great that you've brought attention to it, so that singers our there are that much more aware of their management, especially side effects of treatment.
Having said that, the area of asthma triggers can also be assessed and dealt with accordingly.Things like outside weather ( temp, humidity, air pressure, pollutants) and indoor allergens...there are so many triggers and they vary from one person to the next.
Eg. Cold dry air during winter brings on many more asthma attacks than say the milder warmer months..pollen in air during spring etc
Not saying we need to be experts on weather( some are already are🙂!) but if you think about it all these factors can be controlled to some degree, it's just becoming more mindful of them ( even monitor them) and how it individually affects your breathing and hence singing.
Excellent advice to get a good caring doctor and vocal coach to manage asthma issues.
    Look after yourselves 😊😊😊

I've got asthma and I 've been singing for many years, sadly my asthma is not going and I need to try this and that so I can continue with my passion which is singing. My doctor tells me that when you give treatment for asthma what they try to do is to make life as much as normal when you talk about breathing and air of course. Singing and asthma are not a good idea, and what you just said here about choosing which is more important, singing or 'to live' is the best pice of advice I have heard. Cheers from Ecuador!

I don't know, but i have asthma since i was 2-3 years and now im 11,but i naturally control my breath perfectly when it comes to sing and i also can do high notes but can't do until "Female Range" even thought im female lol.Its became my habit and i'm used to it, my advice is,just do like normal people's breath and try being used with it. =]
also lately i didn't get asthma attack but still i have asthma. That's weird actually coz i can manage my breath naturally.
I stopped using spacer after i'm 9 years old. That time when i was 6 i was critical and my face turn into blue,my parents quickly took me to hospital.
=] so to who have asthma, don't give up,YOU CAN SING TOO !!💕💕
Oh and,to manage your breath, breath with your- i don't what to call it is but-- (stomach) lmao.Actually i forgot that i have asthma and i think my asthma gone, but when i tried to breath with my chest while im laying down its still hard.So that,to who have asthma, please forget about it.Don't let the asthma be yours blockage.

I am an asthmatic and I find that I can not sing like I used to and this is bad because I am an entertainer and expected to sing. what should I do I use spacers. I use 3 inhailers. and dry mouth is a definite side affect.

I keep forgetting singing triggers my asthma so I keep thinking I'm a shitty singer because if I get anxious whilst singing, it triggers it.

Rajath Rao this is something that will go away as you get older with vocal training. It’s completely normal. Especially in males.
