  • Singers, learn to manage your reflux with these singing tips. Symptoms include reduced range, raspy sound, discomfort when singing, a continuous lump in the throat as well as reduced vocal stamina. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, then it may well be that you are suffering from reflux.
It’s the absence of the two symptoms, heartburn and indigestion, that lead us to refer to the type of reflux we’ll be discussing today as ‘silent reflux’ or ‘singer’s reflux’ because it's often singers who notice the effect of silent reflux first.
Special Thanks to Dr Matthew Broadhurst from the Queensland Voice Centre for allowing me to use the footage showing Laryngopharyngeal Reflux in this video - www.entdoctor.c...

I am a voice teacher of over 30 years. I lost my voice for 3 or 4 years, due to an "unknown cause", which one of the many doctors that I consulted finally labeled as reflux (he told me that many people suffer from reflux but don't know it, because it only occurs at night - when they're asleep). He wanted me to take Zantax and some nasal spray that I can't remember the name of; but I am very adverse to drugs of any kind, so I began sleeping propped up on on three pillows at night, drinking a large glass of water upon awakening in the morning (yes, even before coffee), and restricting myself to only three cups of coffee before 10:00 AM; eating out at restaurants only once or twice a week (all the rest of my meals, I make myself, from scratch), and doing thorough stretches every morning, as soon as I arise. It has been about 2 years, and my voice is slowly returning, in spite of my advanced age. Patience and perseverance seem to be the key.

Lots of people suffering with acid reflux. First of all I did not know what it was as I cough most of the time with Lots of white mucus all day till I discovered apple cider vinegar and I started to take one teaspoon in a glass of water First thing in the morning and I was amazed my cough subsided and mucus. About half an hour letter I eat oatmeal not with milk ,just mix oatmeal with hot water and eat it.cut back on milk coffee and spicy things. After each meal drink green ginger tea. You will see the difference. Have to change your life style
Make a list which things make you worse and try to avoid it. In evening meal take one teaspoon apple 🍎cider vinegar half an hour before meal. Don't eat late your last meal give time to digest your food before you go to bed. Good luck.

For the past year it has been harder for me to sing high notes and control it. I went to an ENT just one hour ago, and they think I have acid reflux. I hope my voice will be ok, singing is literally part of my identity. They’re going to test me by putting a tube in my throat for 24 hours in a few weeks, wish me luck. I’ve had to expend more effort when trying to sing, so hopefully that didn’t cause permanent damage 😢Hope everyone’s doing well ❤

I’m 16 and when I was younger, I was diagnosed with Acid Reflux. I had taken medicine for a while and decided it was time to stop taking it. My stomach aches and heartburn stopped but now I constantly have an excess amount of mucus in my throat which affects my range and sound when I sing. I often spit up mucus and cough all the time but my parents don’t think it’s a problem. I refer to your videos a lot. For example, I adjust my diet. I haven’t had carbonated drinks in years. I try not to drink or eat dairy, and I swore off coffee a long time ago. But for some reason my throat is still being affected.

My range has been shot lately and my stamina onstage continually dwindling with each show, but I never thought about reflux as a potential issue until a fellow singer suggested it and, with curiously fantastic timing, you uploaded this video! I do drink a LOT of coffee and eat spicy foods on an almost daily basis, so I think this is a wake up call to change my diet, drink more water and cut back on all the stuff that's detrimental to my voice. I was genuinely scared that I'd lost my higher range completely but I think my cords were inflamed from oversinging as, after almost two weeks of rest, I can access my head voice again. In the long-term though, I can see that reflux may well be an unnoticed problem for me 'cause I've experienced similar issues in the past but thought it was just down to bad technique or vocal abuse (since I used to do a lot of experimental extended technique and screaming stuff...badly).
Thank you for another quality video, Doc!

My voice has been RUINED by reflux over the past two months. It's really been pissing me off. I used to have no trouble staying on key, but now I go flat all the time and have the reduced range. I've been dealing with reflux and stomach ulcers my whole life because of a genetic condition that causes my stomach to produce way more stomach acid than normal. I can be perfectly fine all day, and then suddenly my stomach will start fucking itself with acid, be unable to handle it, and force it all the way up into my throat. My voice was just fine today and then suddenly that happened for less than a second and it felt like I just swallowed burning gasoline. Now my voice is going to be ruined for the day. I take medication and regulate my diet, it's just stress. Being a college student, it's just impossible not to be stressed, and the heartburn makes the stress even worse. So tired of dealing with this, and the ulcers

I'm a singer- songwriter with acid reflux. If I wake up in the morning I have the most dry mouth ever, and my stomach always feels contracted. For that I do meditations in the morning to 'decontract' my stomach or to relax other areas of my body that feel tensioned :-) . That sounds very silly but it does work actually. I don't do stomach medicins, only when necessary. 'cause in the long run I don't think they're healthy. What triggers my reflux is too much coffee/tea what causes it to dry, and stress, stress, stress. Managing too much at the same time. Eating too much food at once and eating to fast. I basically have reflux on every meal, so I really need to watch it. I drink lots of water when the dryness occurs, do stress release exercices when I feel it's too much, I also boil my vegetables a lot now, eating sweet potatoes, cause I have gastritis, too. I do the double pillows, slower eating, and sleeping in time cause that causes a lot of my problems, too. I'm always happy when my stomach is making sounds now. In the beginning it was very disturbing to me. Like: "why do I have such a noisy stomach?" And now I'm the happiest ever when that happens 'cause it's such a good sign of my body relaxing :-) ! I'm very much a person that looks at emotional blocks, too, cause they caused stress in my body very much. And that helped me a lot, too up until now, mayb even the most. :-)

I asked my SLP about it and she said I might be engaging my upper abs too much and I should focus on my pelvic floor lifting and zipping up my lower abs where the zipper of pants should be. Be very careful if you decide to go the medical way without proper testing. Most doctors will throw PPIs at you without any serious examination. I was put on PPIs myself for just a few months without improvement (actually getting worse). After a lot of arguing and fighting I finally got them to examine my stomach acid levels and look and behold here I was hardly producing any stomach acid at all and being put on stomach acid suppression medicine making my symptoms worse. What a lot of doctors don't understand is that you can have acid reflux due to having too little acid in your stomach. So yeah be careful, if you have problems with indigestion, smelly stools/farts and you can sometimes see traces of food not being broken down in your stools you most certainly are suffering from too little stomach acid NOT too much. Taking PPIs will help you short term but make things much much worse long term if this is the case.

    • @zjeee
      @zjeee 4 роки тому

@@wideningcarrot6 Believe it or not PPIs is not a universal cure for acid reflux, if it were then acid reflux would not be a problem. Some people get reflux that is not related to acid at all, for example there is something called bile reflux. If you think PPI will solve every patient with reflux symptoms then you are very far from the truth and might end up making it worse for the patient.

    • @wideningcarrot6
      @wideningcarrot6 4 роки тому +3

Never said PPIs were the cure. But “too little acid” in the stomach causing reflux is a Alt med garbage perpetuated by a net 0. 0 researchers of reflux disease. But who pushes the idea that its low stomach acid? Oh Chiropractors? Damn they sound reputable, the same people thinking they can shove a Hiatal Hernia back into place? Come on mate, researchers like Jamie Koufman who dedicate their lives to reflux research and treatment somehow missed the boat and only the Chiros and naturopaths who are comparatively undertrained and under qualified to even perform scientific research are somehow the ones who know what causes LPR? Na not buying it. If you read the research by Aviv, Johnston and Koufman they’ve found the UES is at fault in LPR. They’ve also found a vicious cycle of Laryngeal damage causing the UES to malfunction which leads to more LPR symptoms and more damage to the upper respiratory system. They confirmed this by healing the participants Laryngeal tissues and the LPR resolved. But no, not a lack of stomach acidity, no hypochlohydria. Stop spreading alt-med rubbish and wasting peoples time.

I've struggled with Acid reflux for many years, and I still do. I remember the agility I had back then when I wasn't suffering from it. Then one day I started to cough, it carried on for almost a month, causing me laryngitis. My voice wasn't nothing like before. I started to take lessons, it took me a lot of patience to relearn to sing. I got back my entire range, but not the stamina I used to have. I have to avoid certain styles because I get easily tired. I've seen 4 specialists, I took medicines but nothing seemed to really help. Acid reflux NEVER goes away. Some periods are fine, some other are worse, personally, a mild irritation in the throat and pharynx is a constant in my life. The only way to sing is technique and prevention. Overtime I learned some practices to remove the mucus. Basically I cough silently, the air violently passes through the glottis and removes all the mucus. The most important thing is not to engage vocal cords at all. There is should not be phonation, only air. False cords and arytenoid might vibrate too, creating a sort of silent growl. During this practice I drink and swallow a lot to not dehydrate my VC. This is a way too extreme, but is the only way to restore my head voice, which otherwise would be breathy or aperiodic. This is an alternative to clearing throat which compresses hardly tire and false vocal cords and it may cause hoarseness. When arytenoid are swollen, abduction is compromised then head and mixed voice is a bit challenging. Belting is fine, but only after warming up properly and a good support.

I started to have symptoms of Laryngitis after a little voice stress. The symptoms got worse and worse and my larynx got infected, so I stopped singing. Not only that, I got symptoms of and misdiagnosed as post viral fatigue. Eventually, I went to see a throat specialist who diagnosed reflux. Within 48 hours of starting a dose of Omeprazole, my energy levels started to return. But I was not given any proper information on how to mitigate the symptoms until now. So I've lost out on 7 months of singing, song writing because of this misdiagnoses. I have just started to do gentle singing exercises.

I took acid reflux reducers for a couple months, and I’m doing better. I had to quit because my mom read online that it can cause me to get liver cancer. But my acid reflux is doing better. I’m also a singer so it was very difficult nearly impossible for me to sing perfectly because the acid would come up into my throat while I was singing. But now I feel like it’s doing better. I would also constantly have to clear my throat throughout the entire day just to be able to speak clearly because it would also happen while I’m having a conversation. But like I said I feel like I’m doing much better. The best part is that I can sing normally now, without having to clear my throat all the time and it’s amazing! But sometimes I still have to be very careful about it because since I’ve stoped the medications, it comes back once in a while. But it’s definitely not alas bad as it was before when I was younger.

This is SO helpful! I've been a singer all my life (50 years old now) and I've been so discouraged for the last 5 years because my voice has been deteriorating, becoming phlegmy and raspy, feeling like something was coating my vocal chords, and having a dry cough. When I sing, it feels like there is something blocking the air flow, I don't have the range that I always had and the quality is not there like before. I could almost compare my vocal chords to a dull knife. It still cuts but doesn't have the clean crisp edge like before. If I talk a lot (on the phone for example) I have to clear my throat and my voice is weak and raspy. So annoying!! I went to a pulmonologist two years ago because I thought it was a lung problem. Xrays showed no problem. Dealt with this for another 2 years and went back again today because it's been especially bad lately and thinking again that I have a lung problem. Today he said "I really think you have silent reflux". So, I came home and have been researching and after reading and watching your video I finally think I have figured out what I've been dealing with for years! I just hope I can get my vocals back and that there isn't permanent damage. I do love spicy foods and eat I hot peppers and tomato all of the time. Maybe I'll have to take a break. @@cosimo9197 I am completely healed now and can eat anything I want..no heartburn. After trying many things I quit the apple cider vinegar honestly because it seemed to make it worse for me. What worked is eating soft foods for a few weeks (bananas, oatmeal, mashed potatoes, soft veggies, noodle soups with soggy saltine krackers and, most importantly, for a few months (and moving forward now) I hammered my system daily with probiotics (80 million+), ate fermented foods like sauerkraut and kefir, took digestive enzymes at mealtimes to help break down my foods, ate a teaspoon of high quality manuka honey (UMF 20+) every morning and every bedtime on a mostly empty stomach, and mixed 5000mg of L-Glutamine powder with water and drank it throughout the day or all at once on an empty stomach which rebuilds the lining of your stomach and intestines. During all this time I kept spicy and acidic foods at a minimum (oranges, tomatoes, etc...) and especially rough foods like chips, crunchy cereals, dry crackers, nuts, etc, ate almost zero sugar except for fruit and honey and never ate too late or went to bed full. I am, praise God!, fully healed and I was VERY sick before. I think that a big cause of acid reflux is an overgrowth of bad bacteria in the stomach and the gut. The probiotics and fermented foods and manuka honey will resolve that over time, and the soft foods and L-glutamine will heal the lower esophageal sphincter and the lining of your stomach. I TOTALLY quit the PPI meds and Acid Reflux meds at the very beginning of this process which made it painful and uncomfortable for a month or two but it is important that you wean yourself off of that stuff because it lowers your stomach acid which actually exacerbates the problem for several reasons. You need your stomach acid to digest your food and especially to kill pathogens and bad bacteria in your stomach. Bad bacteria feeds off of undigested food due to low stomach acid and that bacteria gives off gases which causes reflux and belching. The digestive enzymes will help with this while you are quitting the reflux meds and allowing your body to start producing stomach acid again. Anyway, it took about 3 months to heal and another month to be sure before I started eating normally again but I am 100% healed and can eat whatever I want without any reflux. Good luck!

I'm suffering from acid reflux and I'm fed up now. I'm a singer. It got worse from past 4 to 5 days and hence I started jogging in the morning. Hopefully now I'll get better. This has been causing me so much stress. Singing is my life. And also the thing that acid reflux can cause cancer also gives me stress. I went to an ENT and took medicines and felt somewhat better but I cannot afford those medications cause I'm just a student and not working.

I've had two or three bouts of persistent light coughing which was finally diagnosed as reflux that fried my vocal cords. I must have had a combo of things, as there was a hiatal hernia diagnosed later via endoscope. (I fixed it, by the way, using a manipulative technique found on UA-cam). The silent reflux, though, continues. I will say, when I've gone on Nexium plus Zantac, it really stopped the coughing and throat irritation fast... couple of days. However, I also don't want to be drug dependent and I do worry about the long-term effects of PPIs, so I weaned myself from those and tried to compensate with even greater attention to the dietary stuff. That DOES work. I found it hard to avoid those favorite things though and have gradually gone back to all of them. So now the coughing is back a little too. What I really need to do is drop about 20 lbs. All that said, I have a question: Does singing actually make silent reflux worse? Or is it, as you said, just that singers are most likely to notice it first? I ask because something else I do is snore, and I've wondered if singing lessens would help strengthen my throat so the snoring will stop.

Hi Dan! Thank you so much for this video. I was just recently diagnosed with this reflux. As a vocalist I noticed a lot of changes in my voice that were concerning. One of them is feeling like I have a lump in my throat when I sing. Is this something you have experienced? I’m considering seeing a vocal coach to see if maybe I am using incorrect muscles to compensate for the loss of vocal ability. Thanks for your hard work and I look forward to viewing more videos!

My doctors just don't seem to give a shit or realise how frustrating this is for a singer.
I try to manage it best I can with my diet and exercise routines. I get very annoyed because so many of my friends just eat what they like and get away with it.
I suffer constantly with the lump feeling. I have to force myself not to swallow a 1000 times a day. My lower range just disappears into nothing, I get an awful whooping cough too.
I just really wish my body would behave itself.

This might sound a bit weird but I just wanted to share this that, in my case, after the intake of any liquid or at times even food, my nose gets blocked as if i have contracted cold and the voice eventually becomes nasal and singing becomes a bit difficult !!

Thank you so much for your video. I do a lot of singing, leading singing in our church, singing groups etc but have at times had a very hoarse throat making singing difficult. I am currently dealing with this and will be singing tomorrow. I have been diagnosed 2 years ago with Acid Reflux and have lost quite a bit of weight and sleep on an incline etc but I didn’t know about which foods and drinks to avoid. This video has helped me and I may be talking to my nurse practitioner about a possible visit to an Ear Nose Throat specialist.

Thanks for the helpful videos! I've been watching several of your vids as I've been searching like a fiend for a few weeks looking for answers. Annnnnd..... I think I may have found what is happening to me? The last five gigs (three one hour sets) I've had little to no stamina, lost my voice by the last set and the following day I'm sore/raspy. THIS IS NOT LIKE ME. Apart from research, I've been doing voice rest, gentle warm ups, steaming, resting as much as possible, massage, drinking heaps of water and yet songs that are usually easy are a full on CHORE and control is out the window. It feels sort of like trying to sing while holding back massive tears! By the end of the gig I am KNACKERED. (Again, not like me at all) I have the up-nose down throat scope ENT booked for next month (my 1st time here's hoping all goes well)... until then I will avoid ALL the triggers just in case. I love coffee and curry but I love singing much more!!! Crossing fingers I've found a solution as I am this close to cancelling gigs. How long does it usually take for a voice to come back around after suffering this for a few weeks?? Oh, and full disclosure..... I am ashamed to say I had been smoking cigs on and off for the past 4 years or so. :( I quit cold turkey about 3 weeks before all this started so I thought maybe there was a connection as I shake all that nastiness outta me.

I find I still struggle with reflux, and the daily vocal symptoms. I'm hoping with continued lifestyle changes I can wing off my prescription.

Hello sir! I went to the doctor a couple of months ago and I do have acid reflux and post-nasal drip. At first, the symptoms were alleviated by cutting out foods, medication, propping up head, everything in the book but this past week my throat has been sore but not the it-hurts-to-swallow kind but when I swallow I am aware of something. When I sing I don’t feel anything actively but afterwards it is bothersome sensation, kind of ticklish and hot. Hurt is a little far but I am wary of talking afterwards and I am very aware of my throat after singing. I have been known to be very tense when I sing and I have been singing more often lately because I was just cast as the lead in a musical, but I’ve been rehearsing like this for a month now. It feels like I get this feeling, rest my voice, all is well for a little bit and then I get the feeling again and it all starts over. I’m sort of freaking out because I’m worried I’ve damaged voice. My range used to go up to a G6 on a good day but now it only goes up to a D6 (if I warm up substantially). Is it because of my acid reflux or have I actually damaged my voice?

I was so tired of all the reflux symptoms that kept increasing, I decided to go to my family doctor. He gave me Omeprazole 20mg to try for two weeks. He is a bit reluctant to prescribe it for longer because of my young age (23). Although it gives me a range of symptoms, I'm specifically a bit worried about my voice. My vocal stamina is much reduced and, already for quite a while, my voice doesn't really sound clear; it's a bit raspy.. If the reflux becomes manageable, will my voice recover in such a way that it will sound clear again? Or can my vocal cords really be permanently damaged? Thanks! :)

I have seen several ENTs and after scoping me they all say the vocal folds are irritated due to reflux. I was put on a PPI which brought my voice back for 2 years. It has now happened again even though i lead a very healthy life style. I doubled my dosage with no luck. Then went to see a Gastro. He put me on Dexilant which led to kidney/lower back pain. So idk what else to do. I quit coffee, alcohol, sleep elevated, never eat problem foods, dont eat before bed, go on vocal rest for days and still I wake up every morning like I was screaming at a concert all night. I head there can be major complications with surgery. But with all that I am doing how can I be sure its reflux?

Gargle with warm salt water 3 times a day atleast
Don't eat citric fruits like orange lemon grapes
Don't eat tomatto and never eat raw onion
Don't eat spice like maggy pasta etc only use salt and turmeric in foods no other spice
Elevate your head side 6 inches atlease so create a slop so acid don't come up
Observe if diary milk curd lassi creates problem or not if do than leave them also
Never sleep or lay down after meal always lay down after 2-3 ours of sleep
Take dinner early and don't sleep before 2-3 hours after that
Take small meals 4-5 times a day don't take large meals only eat 60% of your capacity
    Eat soft spiceless foods
Take 1/3 little baking soda and drink when you feel irritation and drink every 3 days if possible only little soda not more
It will kill acid in your throat
Take 20 minutes walk after dinner
Don't do hard exercise gym or weight lifting it will create more acid reflux
Don't clear your throat distract your self in some work
Drink small sips of water when throat stuck feel because clearing throat will irritate it further if you don't clear throat and sip water than your throat will heal in 1-2 day
Also don't drink too much water at a single time it will create more acid reflux
I am suffering from LPR from one year so I have tried and observe every thing

    Hello Dr Dan.
So Im a vocalist and over the course of the last few years Ive been facing vocal problems. My current vocal condition is such that any note which I attempt to sing (Even in my comfortable middle octave range like a middle C ) is always 5-10 percent flat from the required pitch. Ive consulted a few different ENT doctors over the course of time. They all repeatedly diagnosed acid reflux. However there has been no improvement over the years. Besides the inability to match pitch, there is even fast vocal fatigue and and very jarring tone to my voice. Any idea what this condition could be? Havent been able to find any information anywhere so any feedback would be really appreciated . Thank you.

Complete loss of stamina, vibrato inefficiency and loss and voice hoarseness and globus/lump sensation are the symptoms. I was diagnosed at the best medical Institute in my country but even they couldnt diagnose it despite my clearly stating the symptoms. i found help on a website. The medical apparatus around isnt competent perhaps. im a tad bit distraught with this condition as i dont know much about it. Any advice with be highly appreciated Sir. Also, is it fully curable? will my voice recover completely and sound as before in terms of ease, comfort, vibrato and eradication of hoarseness? and finally, how much talking and singing is permissible in this phase? I was recently diagnosed with it and I am quite worried because in three months medications did not help. I feel like it is just getting worse. I really cannot cut off all that forbidden foods, I drink only one macchiato per day now for example but cannot cut off everything. How can I know what triggers it?

Ive been dealing with reflux since novwmber if not earlier.. im going to start medication tomorrow jm just wonder if my singing will be the same as it used to be or if there with be a noticeable difference? 👍 only difference i know as of late is the effort i have to put to sing higher notes i used to sing easily and also just that my voice gets tired and fatigued extremely quickly. I get througy maybe 3 songs of sinatra to practice and my voice is tired and weak. Im probably going to stop singing for a little bit. I dont have a rasp but i do have a weak voice.

My question is can singing actually aggravate acid reflux? I find that if I sing after a meal it aggravates it a LOT. Seems after eating I can't do anything except sit, stand or walk upright for at least three hours. Not very practical.

Can you confirm if singing or talking without hydration for prolonged period can cause acid reflux

    • @DrDanRobinson
      @DrDanRobinson  6 років тому +1

This is a tricky one. Yes, drinking water can assist with reflux, but for some people, it can also aggravate their reflux. You should aim to have good hydration levels first, and then see how that affects your reflux.

I did start to get a hoarseness throat and constant throat clearing which might have been a result of acid reflux from stress. PPIs did help along with Gaviscon Advance.
I seem to have it under control now and only get a flare up every couple of months if I've been eating too much bad foods or drinking.
I saw an ENT doctor who said my vocal chords were fit and healthy but my question is. I sometimes get this thing where my voice hurts when talking and certain vowels mo, or and ee hurt to say, feels like my vocal chords are scraping together sort of feel. This feeling /pain did go away for a couple of but is now back mildly since I've had a flare up of indigestion this last 10 days,
Any advice or thoughts on this?
    Many thanks

my son loves singing in fact he has joined some singing competitions. but lately he can't manage to finish singing a song as he said he felt some gas coming from his stomach. At first we thought he is just nervous on one big competition he joined where in he also suddenly stopped at the middle of the song. Good thing he was able to continue but we observe now even during practices at home he will stop at the middle of the song and said that he felt some gas again coming from his stomach. He needs to burp while singing just to continue and you can see that his singing is really affected. There are also times when he felt some excessive sweating on his back and some coldness on his feet . Is this also a sign of silent reflux? He is now sad that he can't even finish 1 song and can't do perfectly what he really loves doing. Kindly please advise.

More research to be done, clearly

Hi Dr Dan, just watched your reflux vid with great interest. I'm on lanzoprozole for reflux although my symptoms are now mainly just a constant acid taste in the mouth and slight feeling of a lump in the throat. I'm due in a studio this weekend to put down some vocals. My voice seems fine- just a little feeling of something in my throat on some notes. Do you think it's ok to sing? I don't want to cause any problems? Many thanks!

Hey Dan I have a problem with singing. Before I warm up, I can't sing above A3 and my voice sounds raspy and cracks a lot. Recently people have found out that I sing and have randomly ask me to sing but when I do, if I'm not warmed up, I can't sing good at all. However, when I warm up (do lip rolls and scales for 5mins) I can sing up to an E4 easy. How do I make it that I can sing good without warnin' up? Because there are ALOT of people I know who can sing amazing when someone randomly says to them "can I hear you sing?" Even if they aren't warmed up, they still sing on pitch and with a nice tone. But with me, I can't sing without warnin' up at all, I sound like an absolute beginner. Why is this?
