  • Can you actually learn to sing from the Diaphragm? I don’t think there’s a singer alive who hasn’t been told to ‘sing from the diaphragm!’ But what does that mean, and more importantly, is it an instruction you should even take any notice of?
    Download Dr Dan's Singing Exercises - drdan.co/pro-onlinesingingles...
    0:20 What is the Diaphragm?
the diaphragm is a rather large muscle, the second largest in your body actually, that literally separates your thoracic cavity, containing your heart and lungs, from your abdominal cavity the lower half of your torso. The diaphragm has a dome shape and is often labelled as having two divisions: left and right.
1:20 Can we learn to sing from the Diaphragm?
When you exhale, the diaphragm is, for the most part, passive. That’s right, at the very moment when you are creating sound, the diaphragm is inactive. When you follow this fact to its logical conclusion, it’s an anatomical impossibility, to ‘sing from the diaphragm.’ It simply can’t be done.
    3:42 Breath Management Exercise
Allow me to give you can exercise that is designed to empower you with a heightened sense of kinesthetic awareness. I often refer to this exercise as developing a biological fuel gauge for the singer. Imagine driving a car with no fuel gauge. You’d literally be driving along fully expecting the car to run out of petrol at any moment. This, in turn, is probably going to cause you to pull into the gas station far more frequently…probably more than you need to.

Interesting thing is, before I learned to sing, I actually found out what the diaphragm was from practicing martial arts. That sensation of "getting the wind knocked out of you" when hit really hard in the stomach, is actually the force of the hit impacting your diaphragm, causing the muscle to go into shock for a few seconds. Which is why you suddenly can't breathe. We were being taught how to control our diaphragm in that situation, using breathing exercises, to avoid such a thing. It's a technique that Russian martial artists are especially known for using. So when learning to sing, I immediately knew what to do when instructed.

I'm a middle school teacher who just broke two ribs in an accident. Tension in the shoulders and upper body meant I couldn't raise my voice. I lucked into finding this diaphragmatic work-around to belting out a good 'settle down class!" Thank you Dr. Dan! I betcha didn't think your advice reached into a non=music class. But then again, when we speak, we really are singing just like the birds but quite a bit smarter, eh?
Interestingly enough, I find the lower my register (i.e. the more Darth Vadar) the louder and more comfortable I can project.

I was taught this as far back I can remember and throughout college... And I went to one of the best music schools in the country for singing. As a teacher, I am glad to say that I wasn't completely off base with the diaphragm when I explain that when you breath you have to relax your abdominal area. I use the analogy of the meal you ate too big and you have to unzip your pants to let your belly fall out lol. In any case, this provides much more application and will make more sense to my students. Thank you Dr. Dan! I was close but now I'm 100% there now :)

You're simply the best! *_* No, seriously. I have an audition at wednessday and I watched your and others singing "tutorials" everyday since months. I learned that deep "runway breathing", a lot about the Larynx positions and so much more. After one year, my singing was "out of the world better" but there was something that kept me away from inhale correctly and i didn't knew what :(.
Now in this video, you told us to try to "hold" the shoulders down while inhaling and that was the biggest change in my overall voice sound. I want to thank you SO much! I struggled with a lot of shoulder muscle tense. I often push up my shoulders in stress situations... and when there are a lot of them it can get frustrating. But this workout really helps keeping the shoulders down even in stress situations. You deserve SO much more attention! :)

This is hard for me. I have shallow breathing due to never really learning to breathe properly. I have a life time anxiety disorder. I want to learn to sing to my dad. I have some important songs with messages for him, loving ones. He’s had a hard long life and I want to comfort him and also be able to join in his love of music. Should I start by just learning how to breathe? Reaching count 5 is actually really hard for me let alone 8!

Thank you for such helpful and concrete tips! I always feel confused and vague when choir teacher tell me to sing from diaphragm. I was like I can't control or manage my diaphragm, but now you mention it's actually our abdominal wall and obliques, it makes a lot more sense! I'll practice the breathing exercise you teach, thank you!

Finally, some sense from a singer

  • @devintheguru
    @devintheguru 4 роки тому +3

LOL, so basically we're singing with everything but the diaphragm. That makes a lot more sense from my experience. I was told to sing from the diaphragm by multiple singers and never understood what it meant. I'm glad you're putting this to rest, lol. I know where the diaphragm is and what it does because I took anatomy, but I didn't ever understand this esoteric technique, lol. Well, that's one singing mystery solved.

my first video of yours. I liked It . Very interesting how so many teachers say sing from the diaphram but there is an even more in depth understanding of it. that breathing exercise makes a lot of sense to me to get a kinesthetic feel for singing.

    Diaphragm sucks! It's sucks air!!!
Belly muscles push air, so belly muscles support voice!
    Pushing air = exhale
    sucking air = inhale
    We sing exhaling!!!
Yes, there are some techniques using inhale like "inhale pig scream", but...

I don't talk about the force I talk about direction. Force is an orthogonal(different) matter.

Diaphragm doesn't pull, it simply contracts. Technically all contractions are pulls, but in this context, it doesn't pull. It just creates negative pressure.
