Really enjoyed your video. I have sang for well over 50 years. My husband and producer used to called me leather lungs. I had a lot of control and power. Then 10 years ago I had Ovarian cancer. I went through chemotherapy. I felt totally exhausted. And thought I’d never find my voice again. I was broken hearted. I always had one song which I call my marker song ‘greatest love of all’ Whitney song. It took me a few years to get my strength back. I knew if I could tackle that… I could tackle anything. Just to add an unrelated note to singing. I’m also a songwriter, pianist and last year I severely broke my wrist, needing a 2 and half hour surgery on my right hand involving a titanium plate. After much pain and determination, I am now playing piano as good as ever. Determination and perseverance is what keeps us all going. Thank you for your videos. And to anyone out there. BRILLIANT! I love the description of this being an "exercise in tension management." So logical. I've been following for a few weeks now and have benefitted from all of it so far - especially the posts on getting a balanced "onset." I kept repeating each exercise around 5 times using the VE tracks purchased. I then located the 4th exercise on VE 3 (track 1) and WOW this is one almighty work out - in a good way. I feel all bouncy as though my body is filled with oxygen, not unlike the 'full of fresh air' feeling after being on the deck of a ferry when the wind just fills your lungs and you could float off into space! I feel like, somehow, my biggest issue with breathing exercises is... my stomach. I suffer from gastric reflux (hiatal hernia) and also tend to get bloated easily. When I inhale, my whole stomach feels tense after a count of 8, as if there was no space for the diaphragm to move, and it keeps hurting until I release. No issues with the exhale count, I can get to 35 easily... I will work to increase the inhale count, but for now, thanks a lot for these exercises!

@@DrDanRobinson Thank you for this and yes, I do have a question. Have you heard of breathing exercise devices sold in the market that supposedly use the "Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT)? They're quite pricey so I was wondering if using these are really necessary or can we just train our breathing muscles without such devices? Also, have you heard of the "blowfish" technique and if this helps with Musicle Tension Dysphonia?
Yes, I have heard of breathing exercise devices that use Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT) and while they can be helpful for some people, they are not necessary to train your breathing muscles effectively. Simple breathing exercises, such as deep breathing or diaphragmatic breathing, can be just as effective in strengthening your respiratory muscles. As for the "blowfish" technique, it is a technique that can be used to reduce muscle tension in the larynx, which may help with Muscle Tension Dysphonia (MTD). However, it is important to note that MTD is a complex disorder and may require a combination of techniques and therapies to address fully. It's always best to consult with a qualified speech-language pathologist or voice therapist for personalized guidance and treatment recommendations.

I am unable to inhale more than 8/10 especially without "over-fill"; better at suspend and exhale for the longer time period [not too long though. maybe only 18-20 at this time] any suggestions?
@@DrDanRobinson as a music learner I always wondered if we had to hold my breath for for minutes to sing a whole para or take breath each time while singing a line too? When I was a kid I used hold my breath for singing a whole para so I always got confused on how to use breathing for singing. I'm no beginner by the way. But I'm curious , so I apply my curiosity everywhere.

Hi! Your videos really helped me with my singing voice and it's getting improved day by day thanks to you. But can you please tell how do I suspend the breath? Do I have to hold the breath in?
I have a question, What should I do if I want to do the breathing countdowns everyday to start the challenge but I got school to take care of, sometimes I'm lazy and head on to games and etc. How do I make more time for the challenge than other stuff?
Dear Sir, The most important muscle of the abdominal wall is not the rectus abdominis is a sit-up (torso flexor). The most important muscle of the abdominal wall for breathing is the transverse abdominis. The other 2 major muscles of the anterior abdominal wall - internal and external obliques tend to have greater effect on depressing the rib cage. I do not know exactly what research you referred to with regard to body type and singing, but if it was Breathing for Singers: A Comparative Analysis of Body Types and Breathing Tendencies Cowgill, Jennifer Griffith. Journal of Singing; Jacksonville Vol. 66, Iss. 2, (Nov/Dec 2009): 141-147., I would be highly suspect of these data. The method used is not validated and for reasons that would take a bit of text to describe. The article by J Hoit and Hixon on speech breathing and body type (J Speech Hear Res . 1986 Sep;29(3):313-24. doi: 10.1044/jshr.2903.313) Body type and speech breathing J D Hoit, T J Hixon PMID: 3762095 DOI: 10.1044/jshr.2903.313) certainly follows those patterns that you described for speech but you cannot assume that the same patterns used for singing and you cannot rely on the Cowgill data. When singing the diaphragm does not slowly relax with expiration. It turns off almost immediately after inhaling and is not activated during singing or speaking expiratory phase. See Hixon, Mead, and Goldman (JSHR 1976) and Bouhuys, Procotor and Mead (J Appl Physiol . 1966 Mar;21(2):483-96. doi: 10.1152/jappl.1966.21.2.483. Kinetic aspects of singing PMID: 5934452 DOI: 10.1152/jappl.1966.21.2.483 Best, Peter Watson, Ph.D.
This looks good I think it can help with my spasmodic dysphonia or muscle tension. For breathing seems to a big problem with speaking reading singing. Y ou have a good knowledge in the voice and it sounds like what I need to do Thanks again. Jim
Thank you for such a fabulous video, I like it too much. I have a question. Can I use this exercises with my 5 years old daughter or may be you will recommend us some another tips and exercises?
@@DrDanRobinson Thanks for reply and recommendation. She adores singing and does vocal exercises for 10 minutes every day, I thought it would be better if she'll add some breathing exercises but if its early at her age of course we will wait.
How do you do to manage the recoil without tensing?
2 роки тому
Thanks Dr. Dan for this awesome excercises. After the first practice I could already see improvenment in my appoggio. In the first excercise I inhale/suspend/exhale , I struggle to inhale slowly, so at 6 count I´ ve already filled my lungs, should I struggle to control it or should I move on having into account that rarely one uses a long inhale while singing?
Probably as a result of playing flute, but instead of just stopping and running out of air, I steadily get flatter and flatter over the course of a song
On the second exercise I’m fairly average (pretty good for someone who sits in a wheelchair). But on the first I struggle to make the inhale phase beyond 5-6 seconds.
so when doing this exercise...while breathing in what if your lungs fill out before the count is over? also when exhaling should all your air be out by the end of the count? or is it okay if you still have air left?
Hi Dr. Dan, great material I really appreciate it! But I have a doubt... Isn't the diaphragm attached to the spine? Because if it is won't it only be possible for it to reach its full potential unless you consciously focus on pulling it back and down toward the spine rather than forward into the belly? Also if your belly expands, isn't it because your gut is pushed down by the diaphragm? Because if that is correct and you push in on the belly, won't you just be pushing the diaphragm back up, and won't that be against reducing air pressure and breath control? Won't it be more benificial to try to keep the diaphragm suspended downward instead to help manage the flow of air? I would really really appreciate it if you could help me clear this doubt :)... I'm really confused about the right method for singing
I am definitely going to practice these exercises (Thanks for the tips!), but I do have to mention that the time signature for the music in the last exercise is 6/8, not 4/4.
Thank you for your comment. I found the time signature issue a number of months back and have since fixed it on my learning materials...but unfortunately, I cannot fix the video once it has gone live.
@@DrDanRobinson That makes sense. I'll record a video singing, notice something is a little off, try and go back to tweak it and find out I can't lol technology 🤦♀️
Yes. There are quick in-breaths between each of the sibilant fricatives. But these should not be actively drawn in. Instead, make sure the release of your diaphragm is teamed up with an open throat that allows air to move in freely.
Finally got to 16 after a few weeks - this lesson is no joke

I am unable to inhale more than 8/10 especially without "over-fill"; better at suspend and exhale for the longer time period [not too long though. maybe only 18-20 at this time] any suggestions?
Just found you- you’re awesome! Thank you 😊
You're welcome @Julie-wr8dj. Thanks for watching.
this 5 bits/seconds increase per week is smart! and also those sibilant fricatives sequence is cool!!! thanks a lot
Glad you like them!
Is the fourth excersize all one breath?
Wow Dan I wished I learnt your technique a long time ago.
I'm in! starting my first day now!
Awesome! Please let me know how you go with the 28-Day Challenge!
This is so helpful! Thank you!
Thank you for another great lesson. What a fabulous, thoughtful teacher you are!
Amazing video n teacher !
Thank you! 😃
Well I guess I got the answer I was waiting for.
What answer was that, Vennela?
@@DrDanRobinson as a music learner I always wondered if we had to hold my breath for for minutes to sing a whole para or take breath each time while singing a line too? When I was a kid I used hold my breath for singing a whole para so I always got confused on how to use breathing for singing. I'm no beginner by the way. But I'm curious , so I apply my curiosity everywhere.
You explain everything so well. GladI found your channel. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
Thank you for all of your great evidence based information and the pleasant way in which you present it. I appreciate that you are coming from both a practical teaching background combined with your academic knowledge of the science behind singing. For the new year one of my primary goals is to improve my mediocre voice primarily through your videos/courses. Thank you and Happy New Year!
Hi, Robert Hammond. You may find my online singing course helpful - drdan.co/onlinesinginglessons. Feel free to check it out sometime. The first module is free to preview!
Dr Dan's Voice Essentials Thank you! I definitely plan on doing it.
I see that this video is still up. I would encourage you to redo it or edit it so that it does not contain erroneous information.
hey doc.
for exercise 1; is it 8 sec for inhale/suspend/exhale, rest for couple secs, than 10 secs for inhale/suspend/exhale
or; just 12 secs. for first week, just 14 secs for second week?
thank you so much.
thank you, I've been working off your sheet now for two solid weeks - really enjoying it. Coming off of Muscle Tension Dyshponia - struggle really, all I can do is breathwork, so I appreciate this you know
Glad you enjoy it!
Superb video this makes me a lot of Changes thank u so much✨️❤️ and iam from kerala 💝🌠

Dr dan u should put your voice essential exercises on spotify so I can listen to them on my phone without having to download all the files
I love the counting to a beat! Great idea! You have my interest and I’ll be watching more of your videos to see what else you have to offer
Welcome aboard!
Sir can u pls make a video on the intro of all the terms related to signing like what is pitch, scales etc so that we can began our 2nd voice lesson. As these terms are very essential to gain further knowledge and lessons
I love you already! 😂💖💖 I'm in for the challenge 🤘🤘
Excellent!
Glad you liked it!
This is awesome..working this daily and other exercises of yours Dr Dan!

You're welcome citlali gonzalez. Thanks for watching.
Hi! Your videos really helped me with my singing voice and it's getting improved day by day thanks to you.
But can you please tell how do I suspend the breath? Do I have to hold the breath in?
Suspend = hold
Thank you so much for the tutorial. I struggle with breathing deeply, I can do 8 to 10 count in but after that I cannot breath deeply.
You're so welcome!
me: do the suspension
my nose: *hEy wAnNA sNeeZE?*
I do not know exactly what research you referred to with regard to body type and singing, but if it was Breathing for Singers: A Comparative Analysis of Body Types and Breathing Tendencies
Cowgill, Jennifer Griffith. Journal of Singing; Jacksonville Vol. 66, Iss. 2, (Nov/Dec 2009): 141-147., I would be highly suspect of these data. The method used is not validated and for reasons that would take a bit of text to describe. The article by J Hoit and Hixon on speech breathing and body type (J Speech Hear Res
. 1986 Sep;29(3):313-24. doi: 10.1044/jshr.2903.313) Body type and speech breathing J D Hoit, T J Hixon
PMID: 3762095 DOI: 10.1044/jshr.2903.313) certainly follows those patterns that you described for speech but you cannot assume that the same patterns used for singing and you cannot rely on the Cowgill data.
When singing the diaphragm does not slowly relax with expiration. It turns off almost immediately after inhaling and is not activated during singing or speaking expiratory phase. See Hixon, Mead, and Goldman (JSHR 1976) and Bouhuys, Procotor and Mead (J Appl Physiol

thanks alot its helping me so much
Glad to hear that!
This looks good I think it can help with my spasmodic dysphonia or muscle tension. For breathing seems to a big problem with speaking reading singing. Y ou have a good knowledge in the voice and it sounds like what I need to do Thanks again. Jim
You're welcome Jim Joanne McInnis. Thanks for watching.
Great content
I'm glad you enjoyed the video The Enlighten Entrepreneur. Thanks for watching.
Wonderful coach!
Glad you think so!
Good coach!
Glad you think so!
Thank you for such a fabulous video, I like it too much. I have a question. Can I use this exercises with my 5 years old daughter or may be you will recommend us some another tips and exercises?
Five years if probably a bit young to be teaching adult orientated technique to. Wait until she is at least in high school.
@@DrDanRobinson Thanks for reply and recommendation. She adores singing and does vocal exercises for 10 minutes every day, I thought it would be better if she'll add some breathing exercises but if its early at her age of course we will wait.
I love your lessons so much.
Ho come I never saw you before?
Your videos are amazing..... Thanku so much... It helped a lot... I can feel that I'm improving... Thanks so much
My pleasure 😊
How do you do to manage the recoil without tensing?
Work towards slowing the inhale down so that you reach your 'full' point at the end of the count. It takes time to master this activity.
Great video, thank you.
Probably as a result of playing flute, but instead of just stopping and running out of air, I steadily get flatter and flatter over the course of a song
This is great! 😊
I'm glad you enjoyed the video Ryan Walker. Thanks for watching.
On the second exercise I’m fairly average (pretty good for someone who sits in a wheelchair). But on the first I struggle to make the inhale phase beyond 5-6 seconds.
Tony, work towards what you deem to be an achievable goal when accounting for your seated position.
This helps me alot thanks
so when doing this exercise...while breathing in what if your lungs fill out before the count is over? also when exhaling should all your air be out by the end of the count? or is it okay if you still have air left?
The aim is to reach 'full' at the end count, and reach 'empty' by the end count. This takes practice!
@@DrDanRobinson Thank you for answering
I have seen many teachers say that to get strength in your voice you need to push in on the stomach and I'm really confused :(

@@DrDanRobinson thank you!!
Hello Dr.Dan. The exercise at 14:03, is that quick inhales between every "sss" ?
Thank you.
Yes. There are quick in-breaths between each of the sibilant fricatives. But these should not be actively drawn in. Instead, make sure the release of your diaphragm is teamed up with an open throat that allows air to move in freely.
@@DrDanRobinson Thank you very much for the reply and great information.
