    Official Apple TV+ Logline:
Rocketing into the new millennium in the eight years since season three, Happy Valley has rapidly expanded its footprint on Mars by turning former foes into partners. Now 2003, the focus of the space program has turned to the capture and mining of extremely valuable, mineral-rich asteroids that could change the future of both Earth and Mars. But simmering tensions between the residents of the now-sprawling international base threaten to undo everything they are working towards.

The coup has really changed the trajectory of where I thought this season was going in the beginning. I expected Eli to be cutting corners, Dev doing something crazy, and labor coming together as a result. The gold rush in space seems to temporarily be on the back burner. Not complaining though, let me know what you think about the new twists and turns.

i found issue with the way poole handled the svetlana incident tho. her decision to hold off on sending her back to russia is reasonable; but why the heck was she allowed to freely roam the mars base? at the very least, she should've been confined to quarters, if there is no brig over there. this would've been standard for any military base (altho technically the mars base isn't military).
there should also have been a base-wide report on the incident, so that everyone is at least informed of the same basic facts. she could also have held a conference/meeting with an invitation to all residents so she can answer any pertinent questions. instead, it seemed like poole kept the info within "command", and that allowed dissent to build within the "lower ranks".
it's also weird that poole's response to sam's very curt remarks was just letting her scoot. why wouldn't poole make sure she clarifies things with sam? especially when sam blurted that the workers are unhappy.
all that said, she's still wayyyy better than ed. i can't wait for ed to get booted already! his rubbish leadership style is what caused basically every single bad incident in space so far. how the heck has he not been called out in 4 seasons; but instead has gotten command of every single most prestigious mission?? white privilege does not need escape velocity to boldly go to space it seems.

The main thing I disliked about this episode was the whole Miles grabbing mars rock scenes. Compared to every other action having gravity and consequence, him just going onto the surface very quickly for no mission other than to go grab rocks just didn't seem realistic or really serve any point besides building character between him and Sam. Before in the series we've seen people get stuck or stranded and it turns into a main episode event, but here it's just seen as oh silly me!! They could've added much more context to this event like some sort of surface mission Miles was tending to where it leads to the rocks. Base also didn't seem too concerned about miles being missing, which could also have been due to them not caring about lower class workers but still it just overall seemed like a very lightweight scenario created with little consequence. Will have to see if it pans out into something more.

Seeing this episode I thought that previously with a regime like Gorbachev's, which was open to capitalism and this contributed to making the Soviet Union in general richer, the risk of it collapsing was low, now with a more closed and less open regime to that type of economy, it could happen that this causes the collapse of the Soviet Union, and we will be presented with images of the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989, but set in the TV series in 2003/2004.

Yes, he was trained. And no, he should not have been able to just walk out like that. EVAs are heavily regulated and monitored. Even if he managed to, somehow, fake a permit for one, the search party involving two EVAs with two rovers - that would put the entire base on alert. Also, you can bet all those suits would have had locators of some sort. And Mile's idea of bringing in a bag full of rocks into the base, again, no. Things like these are heavily regulated due to the cross-contamination and possible ill-effects to the crew.
That COULD be a good plot point and how they eventually discover life, but that won't be the case. They will just treat this whole thing as Miles walking out to get some rocks, that he will bring in, and no one will be the wiser. Only the people involved will know... because... reasons.

The fall of the USSR would be the logical result of the coup. Their economy would tank with returning to "the principles of Lenin and Stalin" and all those minorities in the republics would be rebelling now that they've had limited freedom of speech and economic prosperity for almost two decades.
However, the fact that they've brought Margo into the Soviet space program while the coups in the USSR and Helios happened in the same episode, I guess this is their way of reigniting the space race. So far the show has a race in one season (seasons 1 and 3) and settling down for the next (season 2 and 4), they should have the race to Jupiter by early 2010s in season 5 but with Helios not taking risks and no competition between nations that wouldn't be possible. So they had to bring back Dev and the antagonistic USSR to restart the competition.
That's said, there might be a middle way. The USSR falls, but only partially. Like the Warsaw pact is disbanded and some republics leave but not all of them. Or maybe they all do but thanks to the reforms of Gorbachev, the transition to market economy is smoother and the Russia that succeeds the Soviet Union is up to competition and not a oligarchic mafia state.

1: Gorbachev policies were immensely popular with the people, because it made their standard of living way better. This happened in real life and in the show where we see the common people such as newspaper guy supporting Gorbachev, not to mention it was a coup, so most people wouldn't support that.
2: Gorbachev hybrid market policies would mean that basically any economically important factions would support him, because it would mean the most prosperity for them and the soviet Union, and the hardliners wanna go back to Leninst command economy which would be disastrous.
3: Gorbachev has the support of larger and more powerful factions. Korozenko (hardliners) are only shown to have the support of the police, the KGB, and fanatical Leninist. Gorbachev was shown to have the support of the Red Army, since they were shown to be retaking successfully Moscow as seen in the prison scene. So I don't know how the fuck the coup de tat succeeded? Like yes I understand that the KGB has immense power in the USSR, but Gorbachev had the support of the military and all other important factions. He would have been able to destroy all hardliners, even the entire KGB by force, all the most vital economic factions, and the support of the people.
So like, I kinda feel like the writers couldn't justify the hardliners winning, so they just said they won. Really, the more believable solution would have been Gorvachev crushing the coup.

Yeah it is kinda confusing. Like I LOVED the coup happening, which I could totally see happening… but then it’s like resolved and that’s it. Gorbachev gives up even though he had the army on his side… that’s messed up. Not even a Yeltsin sort of thing regarding break away republics…

We don't actually know what support Gorbachev had. In real life his support from the people and especially the elites really waned as time went on. Also it's Gorbachev. Refusing to recognize a growing threat to himself or the country and once shit hit the fan refusing to use force is very on brand for him. Look at his real-life handling of any nationalism crisis. Even if he had the force to stay in power it's very believable he wouldn't realize what was happening until it was too late and refuse to much about it once he did. Gorbachev crushing anything is really unbelievable

Happy that Miles didn't die! 👍 What a foolhardy thing he did! The Margo storyline is coming along great! My favorite storyline this season! Interesting that you pointed out that the same man (Kirill Semenov) that treated Margo cruelly when she tried to see someone at the main headquarters is the same man who was covering up his responsibility for the Kronos disaster! What an ass! But, his incompetence, lying, and coverup was finally brought to light! I think it makes perfect sense that he's been taken by KGB because they're going to suspect that he's a double agent and traitor. Maybe he's just a cowardly incompetent, but maybe not. KGB will get to the bottom of it through heinous investigative techniques, things that Margo has suffered and seen while in jail. Well, the guy probably deserves it. If he'd been forthcoming about his purposeful errors in the incident report it might have been better for him, not KGB hauling him off. I'm also very impressed with Dani, and her standing toe to toe with Baldwin's pressure to keep his girlfriend on Mars. Dani hit the nail on the head: Baldwin loses objectivity when it comes to decisions involving anyone he likes/loves. Bad decision making! It's why Dani is best suited to be in charge of the Mars outpost. Anyway, I'm very excited to continue with the Margo storyline most of all. Another very interesting piece of information that was leaked: the man that Margo helped and loved (Sergei Nikulov) was in a photo on Morozova's office wall, and she gifted it to Margo , saying that Sergei was a close friend of hers! Hmmmm, I'm wondering if Sergei will be any part of S4 and Margo's life in Russia! Sergei is happily living the American dream, so I wonder if that will change!
And so glad I didn't have to suffer through scenes with Aleida and Kelly (yawn city)

Too big of an emphasis is being placed on the soap opera aspect of the series and the characters. Soviet Union arc is an exception to that. Other stuff, not really interesting - neither story, or characters. But even the Soviet story arc is flawed. They really want to beat down the idea that USSR=Evil, but they do it in a comical way that I can't take serious and then it loses all of the gravity for me. It is a standard problem with writers, when they want to make something so obvious that it turns into a caricature of itself.
First of all, USSR is always displayed as a land of endless winter, cloudy days and rain, washed out colors. In USA, it is always sunshine, color saturation to the max. First of all, not real, second of all, it looks funny after the third time. If you want to make one side evil, that evil has to be insidious, hidden, between the lines. Evilness of USSR in the show is as subtle as a train horn!
Engineer tries to hide the error of his team in the report. OK. Director's response makes sense, not because he made a mistake but because it would really damage the position of USSR as a whole if something like this is hidden and then discovered by others. Neither side wanted that in the Cold War historically, and both USA and USSR went above and beyond from giving propaganda ammo to the other side if possible. What doesn't make sense is the empty chair and Margo's guilt. That guy had a deputy, they'd be taking his place for that department in the next meeting. That empty chair had no business of being empty. And Margo would not have felt guilty - she wasn't allowing mistakes to slide either. His work destroyed an entire program and caused the death of two people, plus his poor attempt at coverup might severely damage USSR and their space program in general.
Of course he is getting escorted out by KGB officers!
What do you think would happen in USA if someone at NASA made a mistake that cost several lives in the international mission, then tried to cover that up? Slap on the wrist? Lower pay? There would be internal investigation, then FBI would get involved - and that person would not work there (or anywhere with similar requirements) probably ever again.
This was actually the FAM version of Mars Climate Orbiter failure due to unit conversion mistake, which in our timeline was the mistake of Lockheed Martin. Though the public never found out the name of the person responsible, just their workplace, I can guarantee you that they were not working there afterwards after the disaster they have caused.
Will that guy end up in Gulag? Probably. But here's the deal, in USSR Gulag is a short version of the name of the government agency that was organizing forced labor. Gulag is the same as US prison industry, just think of a US government having a regulatory body that does just that. And there were special bureaus for scientists and engineers where they would CONTINUE their work, but this time enforced. They were called Sharashka in general, but their official name was "Special Design Bureau", ОКБ. There was no forced labor, there were no harsh conditions.
But guess what will happen with our engineer in the show? Because we need a caricature evil USSR, he will be sent to a land of endless winter to chip ice with a pick while starving to death.
And that is my main problem with the show - they don't know how to write competent and believable enemies of the "good guys". They can't write a serious tension story, and for the sake of artificial crisis, they go down some of the most stupid choices one could make in a certain situation.

I don't agree that Russian Gulags and forced labor camps are the same as American prisons, not even maximum security prisons. in America prisoners have doctors, 2-3 safe meals a day and comfortable cells... in a Russian Gulag I really want to see the rights of prisoners, many die of cold or hunger or lose fingers from the cold, I want to see healthcare in the gulags what is it... the person who made a mistake in the calculation deserves to spend many years in prison but certainly not to die badly in a Russian gulag, even prisons should have a minimum standard of humanity, and I doubt that in Russia in the gulags those standards are very high.

      @Wustenfuchs109 7 місяців тому

@@blacklocke5171 You do know that Gulag is not the place, it is a government agency, right?
Also, you are describing the worst of the worst forced labor camps in Soviet Union in the 1930's up to 1950's, which were very few in number but for some reason (I know the reason) it is taken as a baseline. Which would be like taking the worst prison in USA in 1935 and saying that all USA prisons in 1990 were like that.
Do you see a problem with that statement?
Forced labor camps in USSR and previously in Russian Empire (those were not invented by Stalin, he just took over the existing system... which is also something westerns don't seem to know) were not death sentences in a frozen waste. They were built where there was some infrastructure work to be done. They grew into villages, then cities. They were the primary means of settling the land outside the Russian heartland.
Obviously they were not wonderlands, you went there to serve a sentence (which was max 5 years btw) but they were NOT death camps with extra steps as is the modern interpretation today.
And, as I said, that engineering guy - they would not send him to a camp where there is physical labor at all. He would be sent to a Special Design Bureau connected to his field of research and work. There was no point in wasting an engineer that the state educated and built up. And ОКБ was anything but your twisted depiction of a forced labor camp. You were still confined to an area and forced to work, but those things were more often than not in cities and had scientific and engineering facilities within them. The point was not to kill you but to get the most scientific and engineering output from you as a repayment for your crime. As you said, warm, comfortable, 3 meals a day.
Because unlike some common criminal who killed someone and sent to the middle of nowhere to build a railroad, an engineer wasn't so expendable.
But that's all besides my point which was, when I mentioned USA I said specifically to imagine if USA had a government agency that organized prison industry system. That's all. I wasn't comparing conditions, anywhere.
I was trying to explain that Gulag is not a place, it was a government agency. But the whole thing flew over your head like a jet plane.

      And Aleida.
      Oh, and Svetlana.
      And Tracey in season 2.
I guess none of the female characters screw up except those that do.

I am losing interest. FOR ALL MANKIND seems to be drifting into multiple interpersonal drama storylines over man vs. nature and innovative technology territory. It feels more like a space-based soap opera with alternative histories than man and tech vs the harsh environment of Mars, where it rains solar and cosmic radiation, is besieged by devastating wind storms and has 1/3 the gravity of earth. So many things could go wrong and would go wrong. But not in this series. And there's more... the whole LOWER DECK class culture conflict storyline is just not believable. An HVAC worker taking out a suit for a stroll to look for volcanic rock... the smuggler character who gets the lower workers porn and booze and whatever from Earth. C'mon, all of that has zero plausibility. An operations like this would run as tight as an ISS mission. Not like a West Virginia coal mine or OUTLAND or the Nostromo in ALIEN. I don't want a series on this subject matter to look like so many shows I've seen before. I expected more from Apple. Yawn and meh. But, that's just me.

Edi's character is just a more annoying black version of Elon Musk.

This show has already jumped the shark. One clear fact should be that Ed Baldwin should be grounded because he's been at the center of every disaster since Episode 1. The show sucks. Way too much jerking our chain.
