The fifth episode of For All Mankind’s fourth season finally reveals the fate of Danny Stevens who never returned from Mars. Things have also changed considerably due to the discovery of an extremely valuable asteroid that will be passing close enough to Happy Valley that the M-7 Nations are all racing to come up with a plan to capture it.
The big event in episode 5 is an argument between Dani (Krys Marshall) and Ed (Joel Kinnaman) that's been a long time in the making. After she finds out he's been hiding his medical condition she's forced to ground him and he doesn't take the news lying down.
Miles (Toby Kebbell) may be in trouble now that Ilya has learned his sending Mars rocks home behind his back.
On Earth Eli Hobson (Daniel Stern) has problems with diplomacy. Dev Ayesa (Edi Gathegi) decides to go to Mars indefinitely. Kelly (Cynthia Wu) will also be going and taking her son with her. Aleida (Coral Pena) is left to do the negotiations for Helios and that will take her to the Soviet Union and a possible encounter with Margo (Wrenn Schmidt).

It's nice to finally have an answer about what happened to Danny. Casey Johnson and Shantel VanSanten did a great job in their returns as did Joel Kinnaman and especially Krys Marshall in the big scene. Things are looking up for the second half of the season. Who is going to step up to fly the asteroid mission now? Some small details stood out on my second watch. Ed mentions the argon stockpile and Dev being on Mars could provide the payoff to the labor story. Think of Miles' reaction when he came up in the last episode. Let me know what you think.

Well, I still like Ed too.
Had this been any other show and we started S1 with 72 year old man trying to stay in his glory days, things may have been different. But we’ve been on a journey with this character for the past 34 years of his life. We’ve seen his wins and losses. We’ve seen him being supportive and we’ve seen him be a jerk. We’ve seen his bad decisions but also his good ones (hell, we saw both of these in the first two episodes of S1). You know this character beyond the actions you see him taking now.
Also I find it very interesting that the writers decide to take this turn with a character who has been the lead from the beginning. He has always been flawed but the writers cranked it up this season and have really been highlighting them. It may be frustrating to watch sometimes but I’m so fascinated to delve into the psychological aspects of this character, knowing what we know about him.

Ed did give a little head-nod, which I think was his way of either; admitting the universe hates him, or that Danny was trying to "do right" in the end, not take precious resources and atone for his mistakes - I think of Ed as sort of an old Samurai/Veteran that will push to clear their slate at the end of the day, and respect that in others. Whether that's right or wrong morally, I have no clue, and I do not condone this as an option IRL. PLEASE - if you're in over your head, reach out to someone, anyone, for help - you're gonna be surprised about how many ppl care about you.

This show does a remarkably good job of getting to certain places (or “plot points”, if you will) without feeling contrived. Between seasons, I wondered how they could possibly tie Aleida and Margo’s storylines together in a realistic way in season 4 because Aleida has zero to do with Russia and would never go there for any reason. But her being in the position to go there now, and the circumstances that brought it about, once again speaks to really good writing and this show’s ability to make all of the minor twists and turns make sense not only for the overall story, but with each character. Every scenario/interaction builds upon foundations that that were previously set and this show is at its absolute BEST when it’s written that way. That’s why all of the gut punches in this episode worked. Our anticipation for a Margo/Aleida reunion is because we understand what these characters mean to each other. That final confrontation between Dani and Ed doesn’t work and doesn’t make us feel what we felt without 3 previous seasons of relationship building.
I’m just constantly impressed with how well this show builds upon itself, and sustains characters who feel complete and consistent with themselves, with each other, and in this world.

It's too early. You only get in trouble with IRS if you do no declare your income. If Miles wife fails to declare the extra money on her next income tax form, then they might get in trouble. So, it would take probably a year before that becomes an issue. In the short term they might get into trouble if there is a investigation into Helios employees (eg FBI running a check for possible espionage or Helios running an internal audit after Dev's takeover).

One major issue I noted regarding this episode was that with Ed being removed from his duties, there's no one really left to pilot Ranger 1 to capture Goldilocks. Svetlana was sent back to the USSR and with Ed out of the picture due to his tremor, they haven't really highlighted anyone who can take their place unless they want to trust someone who takes a 10 week crash course to capture it. So, that makes me think that Irina really does hold most of the cards here to guarantee the USSR's position since they may offer Svetlana back to M-7 to capture it, albeit with concessions to maintain President Korchenko's position that the USSR's iridium mining not be affected.
The only way I see that happening is if the iridium isn't brought back to Earth, but rather the M-7 encourages new industries to move to Mars to start a new technological boom on the Red Planet, thus kicking off a potential for a Independence movement on Mars come Season 5 or Season 6 since the workers mentioned they'd have to bring a lot more people to mine and process Goldilocks than Happy Valley currently has.
Also, I think the smelly Helios suit Miles complained about last episode is a nod that it was Danny's suit, thus explaining that his body was brought back to Happy Valley. I think it also affected Ed a bit more than he lets on as Danny looks eerily similar to Gordo's looks (mustache and all) back in S2 on Jamestown when he tried to take his helmet off on the Moon.

This is the kind of episode that people who only watch the show for space scenes complain about, but they’re really missing so much.
I think Deb has big plans for Mars. I think either later in this season or the next we could see a push for Martian independence, as its own sovereign body.
Some kind of inverse of the situation a few episodes ago involving Margo would be an interesting development. The US discovering she is still alive and well in the Soviet Union and demanding her return to the US for trial. And the potential for that to restart a new Cold War.

Being a huge Trek fan, specifically DS9 which Rob Moore worked on, there was saying about Miles O'Brien that goes, "O'Brien must suffer" because every episode that focused on him, he was suffering some horrible situation. For All Mankind I am going to coin the phrase "Ed Must Suffer," because he's constantly getting shafted or painted in a weak/pathetic light. Here’s my question: Does Irina actually know that Margo and Aleida are close? She obviously knows who Margo is and what she’s done and that she did it for Sergi (sp?), but does she know that Margo and Aleida are like family? I don’t know that she’s made that connection, or that she knows that they were anything more than colleagues at NASA.
Side note: Kelly’s speech to Aleida about there being a million reasons not to do something, but she has to find the reason to do it feels prophetic to me. Margo and Aleida’s relationship has always mimicked (in my mind) Margo’s relationship with von Bronn. They almost seem to be on the same trajectories. Maybe this time around it’s Aleida who does something she didn’t want to do but for Margo. Margo will be her “one reason” to do something against the million reasons not to.

The upper bound on the period of a mars-crossing elliptical orbit originating from Jupiter is 6.2 years. It's going to circulate around the inner solar system for millions of years so why is capture so urgent? Even if it can't be captured to Mars orbit this time around they could apply as much delta-v as they have and shorten the period even more

I remember watching season 3 expecting Ed to die heroically during the finale. When the finale did roll around, was surprised he survived at the end. Being honest, the show made the right call because I feel like too many characters have died "being the hero", and its bound to become a trope, so this is a fresh breath of air to slowly end his character by the finale of this season. Hard to tell how many seasons will happen after the season 1 protagonists are gone, they haven't really introduced any characters that will seem to have a long timespan in the series. I'd imagine the series would likely end whenever it's caught up to 2023, or likely 2027 aka whenever season 6 comes out since that'll be caught up to the modern day

Dead Danny sitting in his space suit outside the North Korean capsule did not look like the real actor (Casey W. Johnson) to me. More like a prop head replica of him that appeared overly pale, slim, and waxy. It would make sense from a production standpoint that his actual final scenes with Dani inside the capsule (as well as VanSanten's recorded video message) were already filmed for S3 when these two actors were still a regular part of the show, instead of calling them back in for a few minor scenes in S4 after their exits.

I don't think a cannibalism plot fits into this series. I don't think Amber would have allowed Danielle to host Avery's birthday party and present the birthday cake to her daughter. Especially, if she knew that they gave Danny the same treatment you would to livestock. Provided Danny his own private enclosure, denied him the opportunity to live with the rest and the only reason to interact with Danny was to make sure he's well fed. I highly doubt this is what Amber meant when she said, "Every year it gets a little easier." This season has done nothing to setup the dark secret and not telling Amber. I would think Amber would never want to see their faces again and be reminded of what happened to Danny. There's no hints that Amber will ever be mentioned again for the rest of the season. Maybe another decade or two when Avery is old enough to be apart of space travel.

The sum of 20 trillion is quite relevant as it is the combined GDP of the USSR and the US (as shown in the timeline videos). Obviously, with a constant demand a large influx (supply) of iridium would plummet its price. However, as it is indicated there Iridium has potential disruptive applications in so many industries that it would inevitably increase its demand and make the owners of the iridium rich. It is however a much larger threat for the USSR given their lower technological innovation level and thus they have the biggest incentive to lead the capture efforts to a failure. ***warning: possible spoilers in my comment so beware*** if someone hasn't watched episode 6 (Leningrad) of Season 4.
I thought I really hated the "Danny" character because of all the terrible things he did even as far back as childhood but MILES? I really can't even stand to watch him! He is such a .. well.. can't describe really except he looks like a walking pity party and I just can not stand him! He (his character) shouldn't even be in the series! At the very least they could've written his character a little better or ..IDK. I don't know if anyone else feels that way about him but I've NEVER felt sorry for him and now look what he has done and IS doing to the ENTIRE planet and more! Danny didn't even go that far. UGH I really almost have to skip through his scenes except that there is always some info that I (we) seem to need to see what's going to happen. He is a walking time bomb for everyone and now he brought in a whole crew to help him do it..
I really enjoyed Daniel FINALLY telling Ed off! It was FANTASTIC. The problem is of course now Ed is on the war path and he is now a bitter very screwed up old man with just enough power and ability to alter situations so there's that. Between him and then this Miles guy.. well I can see the series coming to a halt LIGHTNING fast, however they always seem to find ways out or deal with these things.
Margo being allowed to meet with Aleida let alone "work" with her is beyond belief and that's saying something considering all that happened and knowing Russia in the show. I did NOT think the Russians would even consider letting her "out" herself let alone get that involved PUBLICLY! So, that was a shock. Aleida's reaction.. not shocking at all except I did NOT think she'd cave to helping Margo aka THE RUSSIANS as she hated all the crimes that happened previously but Margo's Treasonous actions.
A LOT happened in the latest episode and I truly enjoyed it more than ANY in season 4 so far. I'm just really wondering how it will all blow up (no pun intended). I do wonder what Kelly baby will say when she (if she) finds out what Ed has been (is) doing. I don't think she'd like it at all. Her "perfect" "daddy" doing things like that? hmmm

I think Aleida WILL see Margo, or become aware of her being there. If Irina does 'hide' her valuable asset away during the M-7 conference, it's possible that Aleida will suss it out by simply reading the math and equations that Irina might share at the M-7 to make a point she needs people to understand, furthering her agenda. But I know Margo's presence and her position as Irina's assistant will become known to Aleida. You can see it coming! Here's an interesting thought or two: 1) When Aleida discovers Margo's high treason, she'll immediately jump on her sanctimonious high horse! She'll certainly tell Hobson at the earliest moment possible! No way does Aleida keep news like that a secret. 2) With that knowledge, Hobson could put pressure on Irina to surrender Margo to US custody, just like Irina put the screws to him over Svetlana Zakharova! What a pickle that will be for Irina! She won't want to surrender such a valuable asset as Margo! I don't think she'd protect Margo for 'feelings of friendship and appreciation', only for Margo's value to her and her cause. It's going to be a political trainwreck, push & pull exercise! 3) Will Irina be forced to give Svetlana back in trade for keeping Margo? I say 'nope'. Svetlana isn't an important piece of property to the US, not enough to allow Margo to remain a Russian asset. This storyline is the most intriguing to me. The rest of it, Ed, Kelly, her sick kid, Dani, Dev, Miles, his growing attraction to Massey, Ilya's discovery about Miles' side hustle, Danny's corpse, etc etc are all like B+ soaps in comparison. Interesting soaps, but soaps nonetheless.

I take exception to the idea that Aleida is, or has ever been, on a “sanctimonious high horse”. If you recall, it wasn’t Aleida who told the FBI about Margo giving the designs to the Russians in the first place, it was Bill (which she expressly told him not to do, and then after she found out he did, she told him he was dead to her). Aleida’s not going to sell Margo out. I don’t see that happening. She didn’t do it last season, and in every episode this season, she has remembered Margo fondly and even defended her actions in that argument with Bill. I especially don’t think she’d sell her out without finding out why she gave the Russians the design in the first place. Aleida loves Margo (as a mentor/mom-like figure), so her “outing” her, or doing anything that’s going to hurt her just seems out of character for her personally, and their relationship in general.

nah thinking that the soviets want to sabotage the operation, the US thinks ahead and tries to blow a bit off and divert that part into a new orbit. they can then claim it their own, gore wins bigtime, and Ed will blow up coz it needs to somehow be manually triggered. just my two cents.

Who gets the majority of the Rock? Thats whats going to shape the TV show and the conflicts in the future! If i was the writers i would have wrote out all scenarios with all the countries involved!🤷🏽‍♂️. Wonder who they picked?🤔

Low gravity seems like the last place you would send someone with a weak heart, it could only make it weaker. If it were beneficial they would be floating Alex on epsom salts and supplementing his oxygen. His mother's presence will probably do more for his well-being than the physical situation

What's with the Soviet Union being in a permanent winter... The detail seems out of place... I know it was done for creative reasons but come on... Let Margot have some sun. For context the original "tanks surrounding the Russian parliament that happened in 1991" happened in August and the average temperatures are around 75 degrees.

I said Ed Baldwin was a see you next tuesday after 5 episodes of season 1. Season 4 episode 5 is him at his worst. Threatening Dannielle Poole because shes pressing on him the very serious issue which he is deliberately avoiding. My theory for how Danny ended up in isolation is that we dont see Ed threatening to kill Danny (stevens) and Danny Poole insists on his exile as a way of keeping Danny alive and safe from Ed. Ed Baldwin is the series main protagonist and he is a hero, but id serve under Danielle Poole over Ed Baldwin every day of the week.

I appreciate these recaps. Wishing you continued success. Through these recaps i have stopped watching the show. Its now similar to all other shows. Its political, emotional, and heavy back story driven now. It changed. Honestly becoming predictable as every show. This was one of the last series that i have watched. Good shows either are cancel after a season or two, canceled before the end of the story, or changed to something else. All of this is fluff to stretch the story. I just cant watch this show anymore. However i will continue to follow your excellent work.

They were low on food after the mining accident that happened last season. Mars has grown since then.

The Miles plot line always feels the most unrealistic to me. With how tightly space flight is regulated, even if it is routine, I find it difficult to believe they could smuggle all this stuff to Mars. And then to have something wrapped in newspaper again doesn’t feel real. Really? And of course the one piece of newspaper is of the rocks that somehow are getting through pre and post flight inspection and being smuggled out of wherever the return flights are landing. And then the added weight is ignored. I love this show but this whole plot line is meh.
I will add it was great to see Karen again, not sure why they offed her, and the actor playing Danny did a fantastic job. As Pete said, you kind of felt for him a bit. And no one I’ve talked to about the show ever thought about cannibalism. Hope they leave whatever happened to Danny’s body unstated.

The newspaper wrapping was a stretch but id say a useful tool for storytelling. Remember though that Tracey and Gordo were discussing Traceys illicit channel for obtaining cigarettes on Jamestown. These are I think practical realities to humans. A way would be found to supply illicit desires.
