Propeller Foul on the Ashton 18 locks, Manchester [Ep 55]
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 чер 2022
- Mum joins me again aboard my narrowboat in this weeks video as I head down the Ashton canal at Droylsden and descend the 18 Locks into Piccadilly Basin, Manchester. We get stuck for 4 hrs with a duvet round the prop so spent a lot of time in the weedhatch. A massive thanks to Aaron from the Wooden Canal Boat Society as we don’t think we should have made it, if it wasn’t for him!

Your mum is absolutely right, you have to keep planning and keep doing things, it’s when you stop and give up that you’ll age faster.
My father lived to 92 he traveled to india and Cuba in his 80s. He went fishing in the Amazon in his 70s.
He was absolutely brilliant and never stopped working or planning the next adventure.
🙂🐿🌈❤️
Oh wow what an amazing man ❤️😄🏴☠️
It's such a shame that people treat the canal as a trash bin. Still at least you had help available. Qudos to your assistants, especially your mom. Be well and stay safe.
Thanks Mark, yes i wouldn’t have coped on my own to be honest 😄🏴☠️
Aaron is a star. He hardly misses a trip on the boats and took to boating like a duck to water. I'm not sure if we'd be able to fulfill all the "Thank You" trips booked without his help (That's free boat trips for NHS and care workers and people with mental health issues folks don't hang about book your trip now) . He rang me about waders. We do have some but they're useless for that job, we've tried. Because you have to lean forward down to water level to get your arm under the counter the water just floods in over the front flap of the waders and fills your legs.
Ahoy! Yes Aaron was an absolute star .. I don’t know what we would have done without him to be honest 😂❤️🏴☠️ I completely understand about the waders as I have long gloves but I can’t feel fishing wire in them and when I do down deep they also fill with water 😂🏴☠️
Perhaps avoid waders as can be dangerous, instead a divers wet suit could be the best. Or bring back the stocks, better!
2016 when I last boated, during that year vandals drained the Wolverhampton 21 despite a number of them having anti-vandal locks.
Saying Hi to your Mom, my Mom and Dad are gone I now have grandkids to keep me occupied. Enjoy seeing your Mom and Dad and glad she is with you in these vlogs.
Thank you, they are both wonderful ❤️🏴☠️
Hello Heidi - greetings from Poland.
What a bloody mess! I really felt for the three of you trying to remove all that crap wrapped around the prop. Your Mum and Aaron were fabulous. 4 hours! Unbelievable! How you would have managed if you'd been on your own, god knows.
Anyway, a very picturesque cruise to Portland Basin and onto the Ashton Canal and down the 18 locks into Manchester, mooring up in Piccadily. theTjoys of boating! You were brilliant. A wonderful video showing canal life, wauts and all!
Stay safe please.
Aww thanks Michael …. It was stuck under the boat so really hard to drag it out and hack at it 😂
Well done Aaron for helping with the locks and pitching right in and getting the duvet off the prop! What a great friend you have in him Heidi
Oh Beth, I would still be there now if it wasn’t for him 😂🏴☠️
Totally agree with your mum. I'm 70 and doing as much as I can and perhaps more than I should. Painting the outside rendering on the house at the moment.
Once was told that you're only as old as you feel and at the moment I'm lucky enough to feel like a young'un.
Love the videos.
Aww thank you - be careful though 😉😄🏴☠️
Your moms a rock star. I hear, if you stop moving, you stop breathing. Rock on mom 👍🏽
Yes she is a legend 😄🏴☠️
HAHAHAHA...THE DOGS ARE OUT....love the old buildings and factories...so glad they remain as an important part of our industrial history....that duvet around the prop was a nightmare....amazing the crap people dump in the cut.....
Last time I came through Manchester I got a child buggy round the prop .. canvas and frame but that only took 1hr to get off and not 4 😂😂
I think I have a crush on your mom. Don't tell your dad. Her attitude about keeping active is spot on.
😂😂 she is amazing ❤️
Hi mum. :-) Oh my what a spectacular building/home that was/is at the beginning of the vlog, great history. LOL about your mum's age. She's a spring chicken! I'm 74 and driving a pickup truck and towing my 21-foot travel trailer all over the place every spring/summer/fall. I've had two boats, one for 12 years and one for 18 years, just sold the last one three years ago, a 40-foot twin engine classic wood power boat that I handled mostly alone in the tides and wind here in the Pacific Northwest, and did almost all of the maintenance, the wood and the engines and other systems. Your mum is a gem. She knows what she's doing! "Never give up." Amen. And ... to those people who seem to think the world is their garbage dump ... don't put your stupid shit in the water!!! Or the woods, or anywhere else except in the garbage can/bin. How do we pay back Aaron? What a guy! Glad everything worked out ok, Heidi.
Thanks Ann, yes it’s really annoying when people throw rubbish … my lovely mum is a bloody legend, getting stuck in 😂❤️
Love that beautiful building 💕. Damn those duvets. Some people have no respect at all . You, Aaron and your Mum are awesome, 4 hours. “wetter than a mermaid’s foof!” Lololol
I miss Blighty and crumpets, you can keep the tea though 😜
😂❤️🏴☠️
HA! As soon as the crumpets appeared I could have written the script. An oldie but a goody. I love stuff like that.
😂😂 I couldn’t resist haha
I felt for you and your mum stuck in the rain in a bit of a dodgy area Heidi! You must be proud of mum, the way she got stuck in. I can see where you get your determination from! Hope you all got dry and warmed up afterwards. I reckon you all deserved a glass of Rum after that! x
Haha thanks Vince, yes my mum is an absolute trooper … I’m just so glad I wasn’t on my own 😂🏴☠️❤️
Alway's great to have you Mom around ...Shes absolutely great to have her around when your in need ...She love you' ...takes thoughtful good care of you ...You'll always be to her "Her baby".........Robbie .
Awww yes Robbie I am her baby … I’m very lucky as she is wonderful and just gets stuck in … my dad has MS so although he loves to help with boating he can’t do the locks but he helps in so many other ways 😄🏴☠️❤️
What sort of 🔔🔚 throws a duvet in into a canal ? The mind boggles (or at least mine does ) Good effort Aaron and Mum
Thanks Garry 😄🏴☠️
The mind boggles at the rubbish some people chuck in the cut Garry, i watch these magnet fishing vlog's and some the crap they pull out is mad.
A lot of homeless people camp near the canal but their sites are often trashes by fascist bastards who like to make life difficult for people weaker than them. As a result stuff like this gets abandoned and ends up in the cut. We once picked up a tent on the blade which I know came from a trashed homeless encampment.
You make me laugh Heidi with some of things you come out with "bit of Crumpet" 🤣
Whey hey! You must have a filthy mind as I’m innocent 😂🏴☠️
I love your mom's attitude, never give up . Good on ya mom.
Yes, she just gets stuck in and never gives up ❤️😄🏴☠️
Well that shows what people think about the environment. "Out of sight out of mind".
Good job you had help.
Well done that young man, and your Mom showed her grit and got stuck in.
Yes I couldn’t have coped on my own, I would still be there now 😂😂
Hi Heidi and Mum,just what you don’t need all that crap round your prop that was hard work getting that of your prop good of Adin to help you to get it all off wow it’s sure took a long time ,just look at your mum hands down the weed hatch bloody hell just look at all the crap you got off your prop unbelievable well done all of you ,great blog very interesting you all take care till next time keep safe,John 🌹🙏💕👀😂🤩👏🤗🤗👍👍😎😎
Thanks John … yes my mum is a nightmare - she just gets stuck in and makes me worry 😂 but she loves it 😄🏴☠️ that’s duvet was an absolute nightmare
That was a nightmare I know all to well..I had a houseboat and lived on a lake for 6 years...when our prop had stuff wrapped around we had to get down in the water..glad it was fixed!
I totally agree with your Mum re not stopping , you do age quicker if you give up, your Mum is amazing, my Mum is 87 and she would still get stuck in (well try) ha ha :)
Very true and yes she is amazing ❤️
Well done Mum!! Aaron.. Keep her safe till we get there!!! From a cold South Africa.. Ps... Coming soon!!! Luv ya Heidi!!!, 😘😘
Oooh where in SA? I loved it when I was there …. Bring me a bunny chow when you come 😃❤️🏴☠️
@@TheNarrowboatPirate Centurion Pretoria.
Ahoy me hearty! Was great to meet you by the boat lift over the weekend for our very first voyage of hopefully many more to come and we all look forward to seeing more of your adventures on here keep the rum flowing!
Ahoy! Was fab to meet you guys too … hopefully see you on the water again soon 😂🏴☠️🥃
Ok, going through these I keep three websites open... the video itself of course, the Canal and River Trust site for the maps and, a website of British slang terms and their meanings and it was the dirty bits that I needed the most on this video...🤣😂
😂😂🏴☠️
Wow, a duvet, horrible. Well done all of you.
😂 oh it was an absolute nightmare 😂😂
It's good to travel on a Ship/Boat/RV with your family that makes it more fun and safe + you save money as you travel on food/gas/hotel/motel + no traffic/no bad ppl
Yes it’s great to travel with family 😃🏴☠️❤️
Hello Heidi and mum
Nice to see you both
Disgusting event with the duvet in the canal
It's not a criminal offence sadly with a nice £5k fine attached.
As you said Heidi a very good job you travelled with mum through this industrial heart land.
A stiff rum called for me thinks.
Keep safe warm dry and virus free both
Take the greatest of care whilst cruising both x
Thanks David 😃🏴☠️ we did have a good few drinks once we had showered and got settled 😂🏴☠️
What a bloody nightmare... so glad you had support and just think back on it as that weeks workout 😉 x
😂😂
OMG, what a horrendous trip for you. well done on getting that duvet off your prop.
Thank you 😃🏴☠️
What a nightmare with the duvet, you all deserved a double rum ration after dealing with that 😊😊
Oooh we did 😂😂🏴☠️🥃 cheers!
Day 5 on our first cruise, we had a double duvet with cover in the middle of Birmingham. No one about. Wrapped around prop so took me an hour to push and prod and eventually I managed to pull it through weed hatch. It was more or whole so weighed at least 50kgs. No cutting knife so used pike pushing down and pulling up to loosen it. Happened in late March so it was blooming cold water!
Yes it was cold when we tried to get mine off … 1hr is good going though … the problem with my prop is it’s huge because of the mid engine and the boat is deep in the water with the duvet was wedged under the boat … it took us just over 4 hrs absolutely nightmare …. It’s horrible when people throw crap in the canals 😩
fabulous fortitude our lass !!
Thank you 🏴☠️
Wow can’t imagine how much worse it would have been with out those two. Why in the hell do people put this crap in the canals ? Why the cops catch folks doing litter they need to have the courts make them help clean the canals at least once a month for minimum 6 months then maybe they would think twice before dropping trash or anything ever again. Looking forward to next video. Really enjoy seeing your mom with you. I hope you realize just how lucky you are to have her along. Susan
Yes thanks Susan - that would be a fab idea for those that litter 😄🏴☠️ it was lovely having my mum onboard for a few days she was an absolute star 😄❤️🏴☠️
Hi me Darlin and Mum and Arran ( I hope I spelt it right). What an epic job that was ,you're all now designated bilge rats!!! Always something happening to our beloved Heidi I just wish I was there to help but you had lots of encouragement from across the pond as I taking my afternoon break after slaving away in my potting shed planting out pansies .and other colourful thingeys under direct supervision of "She who must be obeyed" "Happy wife happy life!"
You all deserve a tot for that so I'm off to top off the fridge ,although I don't anticipate it will be there long.
Sleep well tonight darlin ,Happy safe cruising. I'll think I'm on the Sleeper train from Plymouth to Picadilly tonight. just in case you find another duvet or shopping cart tomorrow.
Bye for now Happy Jubilee Luvz ya lots XXX
Aww thanks so much Ralph and I’m glad you got the colourful flowers potted to keep the wife happy and bringing some lovely colour into your life 😄🏴☠️❤️
Your mom is awesome. I see where you get it from. I like your dad too…
Awww they are both absolutely amazing ❤️
Thought I had a rough day today. I’ve fantasized what I’d do if I had a narrow boat built for me and one thing I would want is to have an inboard/outboard for the prop so with a flip of a switch the prop would raise out of the water. Pipe dreams. Well I still have a cart full of firewood to split and WaterWagon hadn’t come yet.
Ooh bet splitting that wood 😃 I don’t think you can get a raising prop on a steel boat only the small fibre glass ones although that would be a fab idea 😃❤️
Love your Mum's attitude!!!!!! So sick of idiots that are self centred and don't care about the environment and others. Really pleased you weren't by yourself. Yes I wouldn't want to be in cities. Take care amazing lady =-)
Aww thanks Lorraine - I’m so glad I wasn’t on my own too as I would still be there now 😂😂
it's so beautiful and lush .ohh a shopping trolley haha we ended up almost capsizing through Wolverhampton on a sofa
😂😂😂 the joys of boating haha
Have a large double rum ration after that afternoon 😋🥃🥃🥃
Oh we did as soon as we had had a long hot shower 😂🏴☠️
Bugger....so sorry you all had to deal with some shxxits idea of fun! 😔 Well earned drinkies all round. ❤️
Thanks Becky, after hot showers and a good meal the rum was out in force 😂😂🏴☠️
Well worth the wait Heidi, you & your Mum, with Aaron's help, certainly earned a trip to the grog locker. Looking forward to next week
Thanks John, I wouldn’t have coped on my own 😂🏴☠️ I would still be there now 😂
I feel quite lucky I only had a track suit bottoms on my ascent (in the same weather, coincidence obviously)
😂😂 oh David, it’s a ball ache isn’t it haha
@@TheNarrowboatPirate And I went uphill in the rain solo! Has so much potential that canal, just needs a lengthsman looking after it !
@@Boating_David yes I agree as it’s so beautiful too .. but not many use it
I like your tea cozy
Thank you 😂
Manchester, I could have guessed it. I remember Narrowboat Will's vlogs from that area, horrible canals, lots of industry, garbage everywhere.
Wrestling with that monstrosity of a duvet, you looked like a magician pulling out an endless string of hankies.
Your jokes are better than mine Heidi, so I'll take a break, this was a very tiring video for me too, phooh, I tell ya!
Great team, btw! Your mum was on it like there's no tomorrow. Drinks for everyone!
My mum likes to get stuck in 😂😂 Manchester is a wonderful city, it’s just the outskirts like most cities, the small minority ruin it for everyone 🏴☠️
If the canal was'nt so shallow, I'd keelhaul them for a refreshing mind reset. Or let them walk the plank if it would make any sense.
Shopping trolls and bedding wetters, aaargh!
Oh bab once again bostin sat watching in our mom's living room about 25 foot from the canal just outside alvechurch xbig luv keep it up weyhey x
Whey hey! Thanks Alan… mums are brilliant 😃❤️🏴☠️
Lots of oil being checked at the dogging spot lol 🤗
😂😂
Bless Aaron & your Ma! What a hassle!
Thank you! If I had been on my own, I would still be there now 😂😂
Love a bit of crumpet. My husband gives me 3 to go to work with. 2 have vegemite and cheese and 1 has jam. Savory followed by sweet.
Can every narrowboat have an Erin? Your mum is a sweety. We had a friend in England whose mum in her 70's found some road kill deer. The mum was found slaughtering it in the garage in the early hours of the morning.
Cheers from winter in Australia.
‘Aaron’ yes he was an absolute star…. I don’t know if me and my mum would have coped without him 😂😂 my mum is an absolute trooper and always gets stuck in … wow well done on your friend with the road kill 😂😂 brilliant stuff haha 😃🏴☠️
@@TheNarrowboatPirate ha your accent kills me.
Sucks you had to go down on the weed hatch.
Interesting vlog though
I really like your mom and her attitude
Have a great week!
Thanks Bryan 😄🏴☠️
Hi Great Vlog always good to show the harder side of boating, Why is it always a duvet? Got 1 round our prop in Birmingham. Looking forward to next weeks Vlog.
Aww no… it was a nightmare as the bulk of it was underneath the boat and we just couldn’t get to it 😂
Another great video. Often walk from Piccadilly Basin to Ashton, so I know the area well.
Duvet aside, it's great that your showing people that Greater Manchester has some stunning views and lush green areas.
Another awesome video Heidi, until next week, keep safe.
Thanks Neil 😄🏴☠️
Great to see you, love your work.👍😃. Off to the White Bear🍺
Cheers Alan 😂 it was so lovely to meet you today - thanks so much for your support ❤️🏴☠️
It looks like I now will not be exiting the peak forest via the Hudderfield narrow. So I think I will be going out on the Aston and Rochdale Due to the fact Standage is only allowing 4 boat a week through it and the first booking I could get was the middle of August. Watching you today, I now worry about going that way.
If I were you Trev I would do the Peak and stay there forever or come back down the Macc 🏴☠️ it was ok Manchester way though it’s just my huge prop picks everything up 😩
Hey ho Trev love your vlog's by the way this can happen on any canal, i have seen other vloggers post anything from quilts ect on there props before now it's a nice section of canal really.
@@Dwhelan62 I have been boating long enough to know expect the unexpected anywhere. I think I will be doing it anyway, as my chosen route out has basically been taken away by the CRT.
Please say a big thanks to all the magnet fishing teams who also clean up all the shite, in the canals and rivers, too 👌🤘💟
Yup they do a cracking job 😃🏴☠️
Cruck hall house! One of the characters in my books (I've written/working to get published) lives in a Tudor Cruck Hall house. Growing up, all his classmates wanted the latest video game or mobile device, and he just wanted indoor plumbing, lol.
Oh wow brilliant!
My heart went out for you 3, what a disgusting item to pull out bit by bit, in the pissing rain not helping at all.
😂😂 thanks Andy 🏴☠️
Love the team work. As always a very enjoyable vlog to watch but..oh the misery you went through. Just back from the UK and our first NB holiday. First day out, we picked up a rubber tube or something. My husband had to go down the weed hatch. I only knew what to do bc of all the blogs I’ve sat through since the Pandemic🇬🇧😃
Awww guys …. I do hope the positive outweighed then negative though 😄🏴☠️❤️
@@TheNarrowboatPirate We had so much fun! Been married to my husband for 35 years and have never heard him talk so much. We met so many amazing people who were all very helpful and very interesting. We will be back. The prop thing was just another story! xx
51 seconds in, and already grinning at the double entendre, love this channel.
Thanks so much Rick 😄🏴☠️❤️
That's one way to "clean" the canal out!!!! Just wrap it around the prop!!!!
😂😂
Well done Heidi , my nemesis was 40ft of 110 volt cable around the prop . Gloves on please … fishing hooks or other sharps .. also well done crew …chin up old girl ..
Oooh I’ve had cable in the past. A nightmare …. The problem with gloves is I can’t feel fishing wire and that’s what I always get wrapped round my prop … plus if I go deep as my prop is huge they fill with water 😂😂
Wow that was no mean feat getting that duvet out, well done all three of you. Great Vlog as always thank you xxxxxx
Aww thanks for watching 😄🏴☠️
wow you will never forget that quilt Heidi your mum is a star.
it was lovely to meet your mum and dad ♥️.
brilliant vlog again my pirate ☠️ friend 🏴☠️ xxx
Aww thanks Mark 😃🏴☠️
Bad luck Babs I don't think your deep draft helps, you must pick up all sorts of S*** off the bottom that most cruise over. Thank goodness you had Mom and Aaron to help and give moral support. Stay safe..
Yes I would still be there now if i was on my own 😂😂
Thanks
Thanks very much 😃🏴☠️🥃 you will be part of the next Pirate crew shoutouts 😃🏴☠️
Hi Heidi, and Heidi's Mom. Crumpets? They're not crumpets, I'm Black Country born and bred and proud of it, and we call them pikelets!. Good to see you pronouncing Aaron's name properly as Airon, not Arron as we hear so often. Excellent video again, can't wait till next week.
Incidentally, it looks like there won't be a Black Country Boating Festival at Windmill End this year as they organisers seem to be having trouble raising enough funds. Let's hope it'll happen next so we can see you and Puddin, and Jackie of course, round 'ere!.
Awww noooo about Black Country as I will hopefully be in the area for it this year … fingers crossed 🤞
@@TheNarrowboatPirate Well, ma wench, it'll be bostin to have you round here even if the BCBF doesn't take place.
A bit of a soggy one there, in more ways than one , keep up the good work, 😁❤👍

Thanks Heidi for a great vlog and well done your Mum and Aaron for helping you out with the disaster caused by less thoughtful people than you three. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Thanks Stevie 😄🏴☠️
So frustrating to deal with other people’s thoughtless discards. Disgusting !!! Glad you got all that duvet off your propeller ❤️
Thank you Jan 😃🏴☠️
ARGH Heidi!! What a nightmare! Worse thing we had wrapped round the prop (apart from some MASSIVE boxers) was something wrapped in a blanket, caught in a bridge hole (like you were saying).
Think it was a cat or a small fox or something. Disgusting and terrifying all at the same time.
Not been as brave going in the weed hatch since! 😟
Oh noooo 😫😫
@@TheNarrowboatPirate needed some rum after that!
Oh no I felt for you there Mrs. I turned right towards Huddersfield. Argh.. what a horrible dump going under Asda. If you need Asad bags and trolleys that's the place to be. Awww Denis, are you loving it ? I remember when I first got a boat, I woke up every day smiling, well I still do 😂😂
Every boaters nightmare! you did really well with it, I am thinking that would have started my anxiety once it got past a certain point, i was thinking last week about famous pirates like Black beard, Black Bart, Captain Kid and one of the few Lady pirates Anne Bonny, and was thinking you should have a Pirate Nickname, or do you already have one? knowing your naughty sense of humour U was thinking Captain Short Beard!
😂😂 I just take it all in my stride … I don’t have a Proper pirate name to be honest as most call me all sorts 😂😂🏴☠️
Hi Heidi, another cracking video, shame about the duvet, what's the matter with people!?
Have you ever been on the (or have any plans) to do the Lancaster canal?
I'm in Preston and it ends less than a minutes walk from my house and has the added bonus of no locks :) unfortunately you have to navigate the Ribble Link to access the Lancaster.
Ahoy, I’ve done the Leeds Liverpool but not the Ribble link as I went into the Albert Dock then up towards Skipton … I may give it a try in the future though 😄🏴☠️
Is that what you call a prop wash ?A great way to loosen the stubborn under stains 😱What a pain in the butt! As bad as getting baler twine round the Knotters (baleing)
