- In this weeks video I upgrade my Narrowboat security after hearing about quite a few boats getting vandalised and broken into. It's such as shame that we need to get CCTV just to feel safe living off grid, but narrowboat break ins and theft of boats is on the rise unfortunately . I got the Reolink Argus PT which saves footage to both the cloud and/or memory card. It does make me feel more secure being able to monitor the outside of the boat from inside or when I'm in the pub!

I'm inclined to agree with Mr Mumford's comment, unless you just want to monitor animal behavior Heidi. The camera will serve a much better purpose installed in a less obvious location inside the boat so that you have a visual record of perpetrators. If i understand correctly, it also has a feature where you may be able to remotely sound the alarm feature and scare off the trolls once they know enforcement is on the way. I wish you well and good luck with your install and doing what you can do!
It’s portable so I can move it about … the good thing about it is it records to the cloud so even if they steal it I’m hoping it would have notified me and took some footage of their ugly mug first 😂😂

It helps to keep a " Rum trifle" under your bunk a lot of those tea leafs
think or assume there's nobody onboard till a barrel meets their nose !
And there's plenty of woods to hide one if a visit from the old beak ensues
even to bury it like a dog with a bone and go and dig it back up afterwards
But whose going to go to the bill and say "well see I was trying to break into
a narrowboat and someone appeared and shoved a shooter up my hooter....." ??
Cameras are good these days but they only see and record people or things
what matters is what happens when someone actually tries to do something
You're great boat handler by the way and a joy to watch at handling old bollards

We keep our dog poo bags outside in a box. I plan on lobbing them at anyone who tries to climb onboard without an invite. Xx

I would also get some light sensors that come on if anyone gets to close to your boat I know that’s hard when your so close to a tow path like you all are

Can you put an alarm system on it like a house alarm with sirens to ward off thieves????
Apparently this camera has an alarm too but I have to trigger it manually I think, I’m still trying to suss it out 😂😂 I’m not sure how a house alarm would work with motion of the water when boats go passed or wiring to the doors etc but I’m sure there may be something

Crime will go worse as fuel prices increase and people become more desperate for money. The public don't seem to realise just how much fuel is going to increase in price. I have Tilley lamps and paraffin stoves 18 months ago paraffin was 30p per liter now it's over £2.50 and prices are rising weekly.

Heidi; I think like some of the other comments, having it hidden or out of the way might be an advantage, the other thing you might consider is a wireless security system with sensers that you can put on doors and windows, they usually come with a very loud siren. It is very sad to see peoples lives being destroyed just because they are having a life that suits them. You stay well and we always look forward to your weekly vlog. Thanks for sharing with us.

We had a nice shot walk and then sat on bench ate an ice cream and watched the boats canoes and kids swimming in the river. Its a lovely spot lots of trees picnic tables ,kids playground ball field and a beautiful big beach house ,boat launch and dock .You can rent for functions very reasonably Its still in the town who look after it well. It was a beautiful day ,clear blue sky and30c in the sun and the leaves are starting to turn.
CCTV wow that's a good thing for your security, make sure its either hidden so wont get stolen .,Maybe put up a notice "You are on Candid Camera....beware of the Python inside he's always hungry.Another thing you should sharpen you Cutlass to repel boarders. aAghhhhhhhhhhh*Grin*

Awww your walk and ice cream sounded beautiful, such a lovely place you live Ralph. Luckily the camera uploads to a cloud so if it does get stolen I’ll hopefully be notified and have the footage of the ugly mugs face anyway 😂😂
Use a breakaway alarm on hatches and doors. I used to when I owned a yacht. They are relatively inexpensive run on AAA batteries and emit a sreatching noise when activated as a door is opened. Enough to wake the dead!

I am glad you got the CCTV ... I agree that it needs to be hidden as best possible and as far from the mooring side as possible so that you can capture the best footage if there is a problem. Things are just things, your safety is what is the most important so the CCTV will make you safer if you moor away from crowds of people -- I hope it has an alarm feature that you can set off. If you have insurance you might want to take a video of the inside of the boat showing anything of value so that you could use that if you have to make an insurance claim for any reason. I keep hearing pieces of Nip n the Air and I am faithfully watching Amazon for it to become available. I know that getting music up and available is not easy and probably costly so I will patiently wait. Take care and watch your Dad fix things for you and your DIY skills will improve.

Extra security? "A Jack Russel and a 410 under the bed will deal with most situations" was the advice once given to me by an old farmer when we were discussing rural security. Not very legal though.

A very large and well-trained dog, left with the boat when away, might do the trick. They even make camera collars for dogs. Though they're mostly for just recording your dog playing or things like that, it might still come in handy. Stay safe Heidi. ;)

I watched your video last week and thought, we have CCTV in the boat so probably won't need external. Fast forward a week. We have just arrived in Bristol harbour and took the dog for a walk. 1 hour later we arrive back to find three youths had untied the rear rope and were climbing all over it. It was 18:34, broad daylight and being watched by at least 30 people! We will now be ordering as you have. Keep up the good work Heidi. Arrgghhhh

I can't give you advice on where to fit them on a boat but on a house they need to be fitted out of reach of the scrotes. By the way, how many double entendres can you fit into one vlog, lol? I’ll never understand people who break things and get enjoyment out of it. I think if I ever got that desperate to steal something I’d do it with as little destruction as possible. Probably leave an apology note. Last night at music I borrowed the guitar next to me and found that if I put a pillow on the left arm rest of the chair and rested my left elbow on it I could play guitar. Mostly I just used the low strings because my left little finger though mobile is very weak and wayward . So the guitar and mandolin are going with me to the musician’s festival this weekend.🥳

@@TheNarrowboatPirate Just got an email from a veteran of this weekend musicians festival about food. She mentioned the record amount of bacon consumed as being 46 pounds. Being nearly a virgin here and almost one of the walking dead I’m happy just to bring enough supplies to keep me in sandwich material for 5 days. If you didn’t live several thousand miles away you’d be invited in person but in spirit is all I can offer enjoy yourself.

Something I've been wondering though, what about piss heads who think it's hilarious to undo the mooring. Bad if you wake up in the middle of the river. Worse if you come back to the boat on its own.

Regarding the overgrown banks, if I were a cynical boater, I’d think it’s a ploy by CRT to force continuous cruisers to stop cruising and stump up for permanent moorings! @@badarttangent7786 yes you can, but on some canals (we’re on the Leeds and Liverpool, where this applies), there are woody shrubs growing out of the stonework that lines the sides of the canal. The roots split open the joints in the stonework and eventually cause the stone to fail, resulting in leaks. CRT is tasked (and paid by boaters) to maintain the canal structures, which clearly they aren’t doing nearly well enough.

I've wanted a boat for years now but have never taken the plunge. Security has always been my number one concern ... being from Liverpool, I suppose. CCTV is an absolute must nowadays. How sad is that? I stepped out of the back door a few months ago and saw foot prints coming from the garden to the door. CCTV went up the next day. I'm going to disagree with those below suggesting to hide the camera. You want it in full plain sight as the camera itself will act as a deterrent. Better to have them notice the camera and walk away than have them get in with you already locked inside. I'm not keen on the memory card being in the camera itself, though. I'd much prefer it to be at the end of a cable that comes inside the boat and would personally look for one that does that. Personally I'd have a few medieval boobie traps scattered about. Break in to my boat and you'll leave with a third bollock, a spiked iron one.
Hey there, yes it’s such a shame it’s come to this …. But the good thing about the camera is it captures to the cloud so all the footage can be viewed from your phone and even if the camera is nicked it would have recorded something and pinged your phone in the process …. The memory card is only for when you haven’t internet which can be often on the canals 😃🏴☠️
Nice one that cameras ok my tip is a couple of Doberman pinchers that will sort the pond life out .cheers stay safe 🙂🏴☠️🦢✌️

Good choice of surveillance camera quality product night vision on it is excellent I recommend them to a lot of my clients for personal security, good audio pickup on those units, another good bonus is that it's big enough to be seen by criminals so they will not touch your property and they will move along at least you hope, I personally run #10 4K PTZ security cameras on my property, be safe girl and once again your content is kick-ass as always your humor to be respected always be you girl 😎🇨🇦💯

I’m sorry Barry but mooring up can take up to 10 min depending if there is a flow etc … I try to show as much as I can but it would bore the knackers off everyone if I did a complete video on just mooring up

Only recently found your channel so playing catch up. Reading through the comments making the camera more secure has been covered but have you thought about a temporary mount on the bow so that you can view on your ipad whats coming towards you on bends and also in tunnels as in one episode I remember you saying that being single crewed make it awkward.
That’s a good idea, but it would use lots of data and it’s hard to see phone / iPad screens in the sun light … hopefully all these overgrown bushes will be cut down soon so it’s easier to see where we are going 😂😂

We have lived in our quiet neighborhood for more than 40 years but this last year has seen a rash of thefts. Mostly from cars and porches but a neighbor had his garage broken into. Its scary. We put up motion sensing lights and are going to put up cameras as well. A far cry from the days of my youth when everyone left their doors unlocked. I know everyone says this but it was true!
I remember them days too … it’s a shame we have to do this now 😞🏴☠️
And we didn't think twice about going into our neighbors kitchen if we needed some tea or sugar.
When I started boating in the 1960's many of the towpaths were just as overgrown - we used to keep a "Scythette" - a small scythe we used to trim the bushes at each end of the boat when we moored.
I’ve never known it so bad in my 11 years on the cut to be honest …. Where I grew up in Acton bridge my school friends dad was a lock keeper and they grew up in a lock keepers cottage … he was so proud of his section of canal and always kept it well maintained and looking neat and tidy. The job has now gone and the cottage has been sold 😕

Safe preferably with another boat .
It can't be too hard to keep in touch nowadays with other boat users and circle the wagons .

Unfortunatly Heidi what you are hearing is sign of the times. It's like Lord of the flys now. Its very worrying, stabbings, rampages in shops, total carnage everywhere. Kids being killed by people who know when they are caught face a great time in prison with all the luxury they need. All the same as for you safety in numbers and no mooring near locks where trouble can start, moor with others then more eyes are watching. Whats great being a CCer you can move on. But try not to get too paranoid I suggest. xx

For Vanlife ..I always put a huge dogbowl and a pair of man's size 12 boots (charity shop) outside the van! Keep safe
Does your camera do 360 degree's or you got it angled to the shore
It’s 360 but doesn’t record 360 at the same time - but you can alter where it’s looking from the app, inside your boat or from the pub 😄🏴☠️

Ahoy Ben, I have it outside but also have a blink system for inside …. The Reolink is fab but I think the blink is easier to arm and disarm etc

So, in addition to very obvious cameras, you might want to consider placing stealthier cameras in more subtle locations perhaps even pointed out the more obvious cameras... Last month someone stole the mail out of my mailbox in the front yard while I was home but working on a computer for a job, and this month someone stole a bicycle that was against the side of the house in broad daylight, I have five cameras outside.... I have no footage of someone stealing the mail but I happened to walk up by the window and see it happen but not realize what was happening, I have footage of someone in a dark hoodie with the hood up of their backside while they're still in the bicycling riding off with it so cameras aren't everything and we live in a fairly nice neighborhood!!!!! 😰😨😧😥😢

Yes safety in numbers, mooring away from towns and listening to other boaters comments about areas. But saying all that I might as well tell grandma how to suck eggs (never really understood that saying lol). Just gut instinct Heidi and you seem to have lots. I'm pleased in a warped way that it's not just New Zealanders who have lost the plot on how to live acceptably and positively. Will we ever get peace again? Love it that I can cruise on the Rum Wench with you each week. My sanity is restored =-) take care.

Hi Heidi, firstly, great video as usual. The CCTV is a great idea. Security is only a deterant so the main point is to advertise that you have security. As you said lots of locks etc. and showing that you have CCTV is the main point. Hiding the camera is kind of pointless... horse already bolted kind of situation. The idea is to make your boat look like too much hard work so they go elsewhere. To show that you are security aware, what other precautions have you taken....? The visual deterrent is the best you can do so well done. It's all about reducing risk, nothing more. I will be doing the same myself.

It might be an idea to put cctv stickers on the outside of your boat as well if you decide to put the camera inside. It might make thieves think twice about targeting you. Once you have camera footage of inbreakers inside your boat they've already done the damage. Keep safe.

Liked this weeks vlog. Camera is a good idea. I bought mine after the last time we got stuff stolen. Since then all the notifications have been cause of birds landing next to the camera.
