Breaks my heart to hear Gene say he thinks this movie may have taught him how to handle old age.

I loved this movie when it first came out. Now, as a son being sole caregiver to his mother with dementia, it hits home. Brilliant performances and a great script. It's a movie that more young people should watch to learn.

I completely agree. It bothers me that my friends find it "too slow". Wonderful movie in every way should be seen by all.

@@spencer10182 I was about 17 years old when it first came out. Even then many in my age group just thought it to be an "old people" movie, which was and still is a shame.

@@mrnocal Fortunately it was a huge box office hit and got Henry Fonda his long awaited Oscar. And yes it is so much more than an old people movie. It can inspire anyone at any age to have strong relationships with loved ones and how we can learn to have love and empathy for our elders. I wouldn't say it's a good film for small children due to the language, it was pretty heavy for a PG even in the early 80s but for teenagers and up it is a definite must see.

As a kid, I loved horror films. Someone told me to go watch "On Golden Pond." I didn't think it would be my kind of movie, but I loved it.
I had never seen Katherine Hepburn or Henry Fonda in any movies before this either. They certainly deserved the Oscars they won.
And that scene where Jane finally calls her father "Dad" for the first time..... One of the most emotional moments in film history.

Amazing to see Henry Fonda near the end of his life. I had seen many of his earlier films and loved them. Now to see him here, you see the long career and life he had and led.

Henry Fonda finally won the Oscar for this one and Katherine Hepburn won an unprecedented fourth Oscar. No other actor or actress has yet to equal this.

I loved the movie. I actually loved the part where the kid was there. He, at first, wasn't into fishing and spending time with the old man, but quickly enough, the idea grew on him, as the two went fishing together. It is obvious that this guy, with his father's parents dead, probably never had any real grandparents (it is never mentioned if his mother's parents are still living), so he could consider the old man his grandfather. I know that spending time with my grandfather was nice and we had great times together before he died. On Golden Pond, for me, was one of the best films ever done. I enjoyed it.

It is a very slow moving movie, which I can understand may turn off some people, even though I cherish it, it does play at a very slow pace. But even so it is good you can appreciate some things in it. Fonda was wonderful in his last and only Oscar winning role and Katharine Hepburn and his daughter Jane were almost equally as good.

I think a lot of critics at the time were pretty hard on this movie; I certainly remember reading Pauline Kael's pan of the movie, accusing all 3 of the principal actors of exploiting themselves, etc. While I think she overstated the point, it's sort of a point, after all. We bring our knowledge of these very famous people to the story, rather than letting the story tell itself.

Cobra shouldve won the Oscar in 1940 for GoW instead of Jimmy Stewart, who should've win in 1939 for Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.
I love Fonda. I believe he is the consummate American actor and a lot of personal.baggage went into this movie. That helps.it hold up a little better and Gene was right..Hepburn really grounds the story. That scene with Jane & Henry on the dock though, that's a great scene.

Meh, it was well intentioned and despite being close to death's door, Henry Fonda does give a great performance. But aside from that, this movie is too mawkish for me and at times it comes off like baby's first Ozu film. Honestly, I can see why nobody talks about this film anymore, despite it being the second highest grossing film of 1981.

This movie stinks on ice. Incredibly stagey, every moment calculated in order to generate a particular emotion, and it's all soft peddled. Yes, I know this is a stage play so you can't avoid a certain measure of sterility but still, everything seemed to be wrapped up in a neat little package. I am sorry to generalize but this film highlights the problem with American cinema, it's afraid to be natural and chaotic as real life.
