  • Video and photo slideshow of our memorable trip to Squam Lake, NH in June 2010. Location for the shooting of the movie 'On Golden Pond' back in 1981 starring Katharine Hepburn, Jane and Henry Fonda and Doug McKeon. A must see movie and one of our all time favorites!
    Includes all the locations seen in the movie including views of Squam from the summit of West Rattlesnack, the marina in Holderness, 'Purgatory Cove' and of course the Thayer Camp itself.
    Amazing music from the movie soundtrack by David Brusin.

    Love your video! I'm a huge On Golden Pond fan. My wife and I got to go to Holderness and Little Squam last year. Talked to one of the workers at Squam Boat Livery and come to find out he was Henry Fonda's boat driver during production. I want to go back and find the house like you guys did! Thanks for sharing!!

      The hike up West Rattlesnake is well worth it too. It looks south across Squam Lake and offers some spectacular views of the whole lake. Wish we had spent more time up at the summit!

    Looks so much like the landscape of our cottage in the Kawarthas (Toronto’s cottage country) about 2-3 hours north of Toronto, where I live. Sadly, my folks sold it when I was 16, it was too hard for them to both work FT jobs, take care of a big house, and a cottage...but I spent every summer of my life there until they sold it....I was totally devastated (I found out later they really sold it because dads health was declining, but was too proud to admit it). Every time I see this movie, I bawl my eyes out (ironically, our cottage was almost an exact replica of the one in the movie). Because it mirrors my life at the cottage, which my father actually built himself on crown land the government was selling off. I’m now 51, it’s been 37 years, and I still dream about it, and miss it more then words could say. Sadly, I was horrified to hear it burned to the ground after being hit by lightning in 2012. I’d always dreamed of buying it back, but now it’s impossible. I thank god I still have both my parents, who are both in their late 80’s, but dammit I miss that cottage. I may be a city person (I now live in the heart of downtown Toronto), but I’m also a nature lover, and nothing made me happier then waking up to the mist rising off the lake, so calm and clear, it was a like a mirror, it’s surface only broken by fish jumping out, to catch the small flies roaming the surface. Opening the window to hear a beautiful, serene silence, accompanied only by a gentle wind blowing softly through the pine trees, and the smells of nature, which I’d breathe in deep, and know utter, total peace, and contentment.

      I don't know how many times we have watched the movie, but it is a LOT! lol. We don't have a cottage. I did as a kid though, but we camp all summer and are smack lakeside almost all the time! Squam is a gorgeous lake. We are from Ottawa so often visit the Kwarthas and have rented some really nice cottage on Red Stone Lake and the Muskokas.

      TJ, your comment moved me hugely and I am so sorry for your loss of this dream. I went searching for the On Golden Pond house myself, after my mom died in 2019 and I needed that feeling of closeness to my childhood, which was lake and nature heavy, thanks to my parent's love of it. I have watched the movie several times in the last year and 1/2 and cry every time...Hell, even this UA-cam video made me cry as soon as that music began. Mom took us kids to see it in the theater, and I remember her crying while watching it too. Anyway, we just bought a rundown, 1940's lake house in Michigan this past fall and I could not be happier...and while it might not be anything close to the majesty of Squam Lake, or the one you had as a child, it is private and quiet and surrounded by nature. We looked for ages until we found the right one, as we really wanted the privacy one gets from being surrounded by nothing but woods and crystal clear water, as opposed to just other houses and boats. You may not be able to buy and relive the same house, but you can possibly recreate the spirit and the experience of it with a different lake. Peace to you and yours.

    To CampADK, you guys have so perfectly captured the "spirit of the Lake." That spirit is so difficult to explain to someone unless they have actually been there, have plied those pristine waters, have seen the white summer clouds turn steely gray with the autumn, have watched the ice lock in the life beneath. But if they watch your vid, they will begin to catch glimpses enough to want to know more and be impatient for summer to make the trip, take the pilgrimage. After watching this movie the first time, I swore I would one day live on a lake in New England. Today, I've got six acres on Lake Wentworth in Wolfeboro, NH. We're about 20 miles from where the movie was filmed. When I'm there, I hear the loons nesting in our cove, and I "disappear" in the music that is Golden Pond.

    Hi, I really enjoyed your video, as the movie was one of the best ever made, and on my personal top 5 of all time. Could you tell me, if you know, if the cottage is on a certain road at Dog Cove? I've heard it was maybe on Center Harbor neck Rd. Thanks ahead for any information :-)

    • @campadk
      @campadk  5 років тому +2

      I should also mention that amazingly my wife spotted what we are pretty sure is the gazebo in the movie at one of the camps in the distance while driving along Center Harbor Neck Rd just south of the 'Thayer Camp'. We subsequently paddled past that camp just southeast of the 'Thayer Camp' and it looks pretty much identical to the one in the movie scene from the photo we took. Either that was the gazebo and it was later relocated or they had an identical gazebo built. The gazebo is no longer at the 'Thayer Camp' location. One of the scenes in the movie shows the dock and gazebo over the rocks in the water by the camp suggests that the gazebo was indeed on the property for the movie and not a different location for the shot. The location matches the photos I took which shows those rocks in the water by the 'Thayer Camp'. The gazebo we found can be viewed in the video at 9:31.

      @Jason Hawkins Hi Jason, thanks! We have been looking for years as even being somewhat local, noone will say a word. When looking on the google map we saw something that says April Lane, so we are wondering if you know if that would be the lane to the cabin? We didn't see a causeway or bridge unless it was hidden by the trees. Hopefully one day we will find the cabin. We have been wanting to rent it for a week or so for the last 10 years lol as they use to rent it out :)

    • @campadk
      @campadk  4 роки тому +1

      @Jason Hawkins I usual just give out the GPS coordinates (via email) for those that might be interested to see it as they paddling by :-) . We are pretty sure we found the original gazebo down the shoreline a bit. Or its an exact replica as we took photos and it matches exactly to the movie. My wife actually found it from about 100+ ft away through the trees while we drove down the road! Crazy! (I have a photo of it in the video at 9:34) Yes the locals don't say much. There is very little reference to the movie if you visit. The boat cruise does talk about it but doesn't go near the 'Thayer Camp' for obvious reasons. You can take the more expensive private tour though with 'Experience Squam' along with the writer of 'On Golden Pond, Ernest Thompson. Expensive though. See www.experiencesquam.com/through-the-writers-eyes

    • @campadk
      @campadk  4 роки тому

      @Jason Hawkins We figured maybe it was borrowed for the movie, or was sold to the camp down the shoreline where we found it, or its simply was one of several/man that a builder made at the time. As I mentioned check the video at 9:34 and compare it to the movie. It is exact the same. True the dock and gazebo were removed after the movie.

So I decided to put 527 Center Harbor Neck Rd. In my GPS & finally see for myself after living a couple miles away from it my whole life not realizing. So I stopped at Winnipesaukee Baygulls & grabbed one of there famous homemade everything bagel sausage, egg & cheese, which was absolutely superb. (& definitely recommend) Then I ventured down Center harbor neck to be delightfully surprised by how beautiful the area is & the surrounding properties. But Once I reached 527 I was disappointed to find a gated entrance 😫...perhaps maybe during the off season or this winter I will venture beyond the gate respectfully to finally check out the infamous spot! 😅
