Henry Fonda wining the Oscar® for Best Actor for his performance in "On Golden Pond" at the 54th Academy Awards® in 1982. Presented by Sissy Spacek and accepted by Jane Fonda.

Henry Fonda's performance was beautiful and perfect! At the time not much was known about dementia/Alzheimer's. The film made me cry as a teenager at the time it came out. It still makes me cry now in my 50s with a mother with dementia. Just a wonderful movie and performances.

So remember, u r not alone in your emotionally powerful lifelong relationship with this movie!!😘👍...for me it’s almost like I’m watching my dad and I as we continue on with our lifetime bond full of too much pain/misunderstandings-yet luckily, always tons of love to keep us very very close. I wish u all the peace and luck and good wishes in the world as u (I can tell) try to bring comfort to your mother. Wherever she is, she never forgot u or your great love for her...and that she loved u back just as much!!🍀💕😊🌸
Reading your comment, specifically when you write, _"with a mother with dementia",_ it occurred to me that dementia sounds a little like Demi, as in Demi Moore, as in ex-Mrs. Bruce Willis, as in the actor who has dementia. Odd, isn't it?
Henry Fonda richly deserved to win the Oscar for On Golden Pond; it was also the culmination of an extraordinary career on stage and screen with memorable performances in Ford's Young Mr. Lincoln and The Grapes Of Wrath, Wellman's The Ox Bow Incident, Lumet's Twelve Angry Men and Ford and Leroy's Mister Roberts.

Last night I watched “On Golden Pond” for the umpteenth time when it was offered on You Tube. So it was especially meaningful to see this video offered for me to view on You Tube tonight. I am 87. My husband will be 90 in February. We’ve been married over 67 years. The first time I’d seen “On Golden Pond,” I’d thought 80 and late 60’s were OLD. Now I have 2 sons in their 60s, and Norman and Ethel don’t seem so old to me.
Henry Fonda knocked it out of the park, again, in On Golden Pond. His portrayal of an older man opposite Katharine Hepburn is a master class in acting. Well deserved.
Wow, what a list of nominees: Beatty, Fonda, Lancaster, Newman, and the the very funny Dudley Moore. This is the kind of calibre we lack in recent oscars.
I know I can look it up, but just for convenience, I wish Sissi had named what films these folks were nominated for. It would have added ten seconds on to the show.
I love that woman....she has an incredible heart! I can't recommend her autobiography enough. It was one of the best books I've ever read, and I've read a lot
Jane Fonda gave the most touching, Heart Felt Speech that I have ever heard at the Oscars. Decades Over Due for the Great Acting Work of Henry Fonda. I admire Jane so much. I don't care about her hair. She is Beautiful and One Great Actress!!!
In writing “I don’t care about her hair,” you actually demonstrated the opposite. Ironically, you did care about her hair by saying you didn’t. You betrayed your preoccupation about her hair by vowing you didn’t care about it. I find that endlessly fascinating.
Just watched "the golden pond". Really beautiful movie and amazing performances by both henry fonda and katharine hepburn. Well deserved oscar wins. :)
I just watched it, too. He absolutely blew me away, from his way of speaking to to every movement he made, how he stood, how his eyes filled with tears in the scene where he tells Ethel he got lost in the woods, his absolutely moving words during his heart attack, and how he hid his face under the hat to not show Jane his tears. But the best scene was with Billy on the boat before the accident, when he said he was alright but his eyes told the sad truth. Overall a performance that completely captured every needed emotion to a t and filled the character with enough life to be both touching and believable. Holy shit, was he great. Along with Paul Newman, the only actor i can come up with to turn his last performance into his best.
I only watched the movie to see Henry and Katharine. Both talented veterans who earned their stripes with such tremendous talent. Also, he is a hero, being a World War II veteran of the US Navy. God bless you, Mr. Fonda, you much deserved this Oscar!❤
It must have been so hard to make that speech knowing that he was dying. But to still have him there and to have been able to share that with him before he died was beautiful and special.

Henry Fonda was part of the best era of Hollywood when they were real stars and not all hyped up cardboard cutouts like most of them today. Not all, but most. That's all I have to say about that.
What a heartfelt speech. My parents are both in their 70s now and I don't know where the time has gone. For Jane Fonda to keep her head together knowing the significance of that moment is incredible. I think I would have fallen apart before managing to say a word.
No matter how good the part, when you are cast across from Kate Hepburn, you know its going to take a miracle to be seen and heard. It does not actually take a miracle, but it takes the performance of your life. Most of this movie I was watching Henry, was moved by Henry, and felt the bittersweet pride of feeling truly loved by others, while in cognitive and physical decline. It was stunning work.
I remember watching this in 1982. I was 6 years old then and this was my Father's favorite movie of all time. My Dad died of cancer in November of 2021. We were always very close. Thank'you, Jane Fonda. This was an incredible gift you gave to your father and it did get him his Oscar. You were way too humble at the time. This film was also an incredible gift to my Father and myself. It's one of my favorite films.
Jane bought the property of on golden pond so that she could give her dad a role to possibly win an Oscar . What a wonderful daughter. If you have a father and daughter who have an impasse one would expect the parent to reach out and make amends . The lesson of on golden pond is that the responsibility lies on the shoulders of the one who is capable of reaching out to start the reconciliation . Instead of waiting for a lifetime Jane reached out and has that memory that no amount of oscars or money can replace. Yes Henry won but Jane won even more . She did right by a father that had a hard time expressing his emotion .

This is one of the best Speeches in Oscar history. I am so touched and moved by Henry and Jane Fonda's performance in this movie. Kate Hepburn is a TREASURE!! Henry Fonda was only nominated for 1 other Oscar for Grapes of Wrath. I was shocked that in his long career there was only 1 nomination. I also loved his performance in Roots, The Next Generations. Going back years, I loved his performance in 12 Angry Men and The Boston Strangler. Peter Fonda's Easy Rider was a Hippie Classic. I loved Bridget Fonda's small part in The Godfather Part 3. Jane is someone I admired so much as a Actress and a Human Being. First Film: Tall Story with Anthony Perkins, a long list of great performances, 2 Oscars, my favorites: Klute and Coming Home. A Great Lady. I call her Lady Jane because she is like Royalty to me.
Fonda has the greatest gap between first and second Oscar nominations - 41 years. Shocking that he was not nominated more often for his performances in MISTER ROBERTS, 12 ANGRY MEN, FAIL SAFE and ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA.
Funny enough, Katharine Hepburn holds the record for the longest time span between the first and last Oscar nominations, at 48 years. She was first nominated (and won) in 1934 and received her last nomination (and win) in 1982. Out of 12 nominations, she won 4 times.
Reading the comments- this was Mr. Fonda's last award-or almost before he died- they all did a great job and was truly a moment to remember- what a moment for him to have his daughter accept the award and give such a beautiful speech- her dress was amazing, he lived long enough to see it-and all ppl can comment on is her big hair?? IT WAS THE STYLE THE PEOPLE-!! GOOD GRIEF!! DO YOU REMEMBER WITCHES OF EASTWICK....??? HAVE SOME RESPECT. .
This was the first Oscars ceremony I remember watching any part of. My grandma tried to explain to me who Henry Fonda was, as this was literally the end of his career and life. When I later saw "On Golden Pond" on television, it resonated with me, because Fonda's character (Norman Thayer) had a relationship with the boy in the movie that was reminiscent of my relationship to my own curmudgeonly (to put it nicely) grandfather. Later, of course, I saw many of Henry Fonda's films (and Jane's and Peter's) and understood his incredible screen presence and authenticity. A well-deserved award.
Great actor Henry And Jsne a brilliant actor too she had a hard time with him Love u Jane going to c u in Bookclub Wednesday here in Australia 🌟🌟💖 You sweetie xx
I love on golden pond. I am not surprised by his win. My favorite scene is when his character is lost in the woods. When he made it he needed to see his wife's pretty face he would still be him. When we are lost I hope we all have the one we can run to especially now
I lived in a little town in AZ. There was one theater and two drive in theaters. If you wanted to see a movie, you had to watch what was playing or drive to Tucson. My best friend and I went to see this movie. It was hard to watch because you didn't want to think about your grandparents dying. We were just 12 at the time. But, I loved the part where she called him her night and shinning armor. She adlibed that line. I didn't know he won an Oscar for his role as Norman.
I first seen the movie on Golden pond on video cassette in the late 1990's. It was a great movie. Henry Fonda definitely deserved the award for his role. It's too bad he was deceased by the time the award ceremony was happening.

A well-deserved award for Henry Fonda for an unbelievable and an awesome acceptance speech by Jane. You can tell she did love her father, but weren't there some issues and problems in their relationship?
To this day I watch this movie And one of my favorite parts is the very beginning when the piano starts it brings back so many many memories. This movie I can feel and smell the past so much just by watching it and i really don't know why but thank you to all that made it.
Henry Fonda was damn good in this picture, as he was in so many others, especially Grapes of Wrath. But Burt Lancaster was damn good in Atlantic City as well. At least he was nominated for his fine work.
Classy and moving. He should have also won back in 1940 for Grapes of Wrath, his Tom Joad was a character of tremendous depth and humanity. Henry Fonda died a few months after this Oscar win, as did Geraldine Page after finally winning Best Actress (on her 8th nomination) in 1986.
All of the Best Actor Nominees of 1981 except for Dudley Moore have won at least 1 Oscar: Henry Fonda: On Golden Pond Paul Newman: The Color of Money Burt Lancaster: Elmer Gantry Warren Beatty: Reds
This is the only father and daughter Henry and Jane Fonda as they won the first and only Oscar of their movie called On Golden Pond as I am dedicating this Oscar winning film to my old school friends who are both sisters as I hope to see them both again very soon to Chris and Hester from Billyxxxxx
He should have won for 12 Angry Men, My Darling Clementine, Ox-Bow Incident, Mr. Roberts and about ten more film. It all just shows much about this award. It is too unfair.

I would LOVE to be able to ask her why a station wagon?! It's the last thing we expected. So her 💕💕
Henry Fonda in On Golden Pond was so great and amazing. He deserved win.
You forgot Barefoot in the Park with Robert Redford, they were both young and beautiful and very funny!
One of the best speeches ever & I luv Jane Fonda sad Henry died not long after
Jane, you did wonderful......I feel your complete love..........
Jane deserves an Oscar for that very MOVING ACCEPTANCE on behalf of her father. I got tears…
Fonda has the greatest gap between first and second Oscar nominations - 41 years. Shocking that he was not nominated more often for his performances in MISTER ROBERTS, 12 ANGRY MEN, FAIL SAFE and ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA.
* Once Upon A Time In The West
@@fabiencoze9829 Yes of course - sorry - my bad.
not everyone has 41 years to wait for the next round to come. His performance in Twelve Angry Men was absolutely outstanding.
Funny enough, Katharine Hepburn holds the record for the longest time span between the first and last Oscar nominations, at 48 years.
She was first nominated (and won) in 1934 and received her last nomination (and win) in 1982.
Out of 12 nominations, she won 4 times.
I can listen to her voice all day.
Not me
What a wonderful speech!! Very nice.
HAVE SOME RESPECT.
.
Golden Pond was a flawless movie, a feel good, feel real, feel love movie.
I wish we had more of these.......
Jesus! Henry fonda, burt Lancaster, dudley Moore, Warren Beatty that's one tough category!
and Paul Newman
her speech was as fabulous as her big 80s hair
Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn were very deserving winners. One of my favorite films.
What a beautiful, eloquent speech for such a loved father, admired actor and lovely performance.
Warren Beatty, Paul Newman, Burt Lancaster, Henry Fonda and Dudley Moore, what an amazing ensemble!
It seemed like Katharine Hepburn and Henry Fonda had been working together forever in that movie. They were magical.
Henry is The God of acting.
Henry Fonda's performance was brilliant and excellent in On Golden Pond.
Great actor Henry And Jsne a brilliant actor too she had a hard time with him
Love u Jane going to c u in Bookclub Wednesday here in Australia 🌟🌟💖
You sweetie xx
Loved the movie,
Well done Jane .
Your dad was the best Hollywood made.
loveliest speech. she really honours all these people x
A really beautiful speech.
One of my favourite actors of all time...You were Amazing.
I first seen the movie on Golden pond on video cassette in the late 1990's. It was a great movie. Henry Fonda definitely deserved the award for his role. It's too bad he was deceased by the time the award ceremony was happening.
Wrong.
The whole movie just made everyone feel good!
Henry fonda was an is Great actor love watching his films his acting an dialogues BRILLIANT anytime fondas film comes on T.v always like watching his films.
Classic hollywood actors that will never be again. Today's actors don't hold a candle to them. Back when award shows were enjoyable to watch.
Wow it was great seeing those great stars from days gone by especially my favorite Burt Lancaster.
Ohhhhh My...that hair! Why did we all think that looked so good?!?!
Jane is a wonderful speaker. I remember seeing this live.
"Why did we all think that looked so good?!?!" It's because we looked similar. ;-)
A well-deserved award for Henry Fonda for an unbelievable and an awesome acceptance speech by Jane. You can tell she did love her father, but weren't there some issues and problems in their relationship?
Like in most families.
robert freedman - yep, her father was patriotic, a true American whereas, Jane was a traitor during the Vietnam war, aka Hanoi Jane
@@robertfreedman6651 Yes I think the troubled relationship was exaggerated to a degree. Look at the children of some others stars in comparasion.
To this day I watch this movie And one of my favorite parts is the very beginning when the piano starts it brings back so many many memories. This movie I can feel and smell the past so much just by watching it and i really don't know why but thank you to all that made it.
Fonda Rules.Greatest actor ever period!!
Henry Fonda was damn good in this picture, as he was in so many others, especially Grapes of Wrath.
But Burt Lancaster was damn good in Atlantic City as well. At least he was nominated for his fine work.
Dave Glo i loved Atlantic City and am also a fan of the great Lancaster.
@@lindas.martin2806 who is that on 1:41 ? handsome
R.I.P. Peter Fonda (79)
Jane Fonda shows so much gratitude
What a woman !
All of the Best Actor Nominees of 1981 except for Dudley Moore have won at least 1 Oscar:
Henry Fonda: On Golden Pond
Paul Newman: The Color of Money
Burt Lancaster: Elmer Gantry
Warren Beatty: Reds
This is the only father and daughter Henry and Jane Fonda as they won the first and only Oscar of their movie called On Golden Pond as I am dedicating this Oscar winning film to my old school friends who are both sisters as I hope to see them both again very soon to Chris and Hester from Billyxxxxx
A long overdue win! He should have won for _The Grapes of Wrath_ for his remarkable performance.
He should have won for 12 Angry Men, My Darling Clementine, Ox-Bow Incident, Mr. Roberts and about ten more film. It all just shows much about this award. It is too unfair.
I watch ON GOLDEN POND every CHRISTMAS. I makes me SMILE.. Some 32 years later.
She's always been the best
I’d never seen that before..I was young but I heard Jane mention her father in the Vogue game with Lily Tomlin and Jane. Well both of those came full circle…love wonderfully actors 🙏🏽🙋🏻♀️👍🏽Mia
I can’t imagine trying to play Norman Thayer, Jr. after Henry Fonda’s brilliant version. It couldn’t be improved.
I was a figure skater when I was a kid and I skated to the music from On Golden Pond. Brings back many memories for me.
Henry Fonda. Warren Beatty. Burt Lancaster. Paul Newman. .....
Poor Dudley Moore seemed like the outcast...
I think this was the first and only time that I remember that the list of nominees was read without mentioning the picture they starred in.
Fantastic movie I never get tired of watching the movie
Henry Fond is the best male actor in my movie watching history.
I can't express in words, how much I love her hairdo.
