- This is a quick and dirty tool review discussing MY thoughts on the two oscillating tools I own from the to big tool brands everyone always asks me about. By no means does this mean one of these two are the best...just the most popular it seems based on peoples feedback.
Feel free to give me your opinion in the comments or recommend the next toolsday tools to talk about....but don't make it about red vs yellow.
I don't want to over complicate these "tool reviews" so by making them quick and to the point, I hope I help someone answer any questions they might have. These are only my opinion and you are able to develop your own if you've used both. Most tools these days don't come down to performance in my opinion, rather ergonomics and what the rest of your tool collection looks like.

Tried using a reciprocating saw in tight areas ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx0vyBwjtx9GGOuiqUVT2sRoYqmDoNT_RI and it wasn't making the cut. Bought this oscillating tool and now I can make cuts in places that I couldn't with the reciprocating saw. Best tool for the job!

First time I used the Milwaukee I gasped 'holy shit' because of how quick and easily it did the cut. I was even more so impressed that it did it without vibrating my hands at all or ringing my ears even in the slightest. I usually dread having to use a multitool because of the awful sound they make and the vibration, but the Milwaukee is actually fun to cut with.
FYI: You can lock the DeWALT trigger on so it can be used without holding it down.

Does its lock at desired speed?
When using this type of tool you are supposed to use it at a slight angle so the blade can evacuate the sawdust from the area. If you go straight down as he demonstrates the blade can't remove the dust and can no longer make any more progress because the teeth of the blade are filled with compacted dust. The reason the Milwaukee succeeded is because of the extra angle the blade rotates, this allows the tool to evacuate dust better but still not as efficient as just holding the tool slightly at an angle so it can properly remove the dust from the area.

*The 3 speed is good **MyBest.Tools** trying to keep to a low speed for a long time with just the trigger is hard.The only negative is I keep bumping the on/off switch when changing blades, not dangerous but annoying.*
I own a DeWalt, but I have a Milwaukee in my work truck. They both do the job when I need them.
I've used both. Dewalt is loud, vibrates a lot, and gets hot. Trigger allows more precise starts in fine carpentry. I like to use the Milwaukee for rough carpentry long hours usage. Not having a trigger makes it hard for real precise carpentry/fabrication

Possibly the best disclaimer I've heard ... being so upfront makes your opinions a hell of a lot more valuable than most other channels. 👍
Too many other channels just read the vendors preprinted script. And it sounds as fake as all heck.
I have both. The Dewalt is my fave. The Milwaukee has a stupid angle so it can't stand up on the battery. The Milwaukee (18) just feels awkward to me and my crew. Great Video as always!!
I have both but the Dewalt with the trigger and quick release make it hella nice. Personal preference. Both are cool.
One of the first things I was told in carpentry, let the saw do the work. That was my mentor when I was much younger, watching me using only 50% of the the teeth on the saw to do a cut, instead of longer strokes to use more of the teeth for an easier cut.
The Milwaukee vibrates less in part because the longer movement requires less changes in direction for the blade. Over 4mm compared to 1.6mm means the DeWalt is changing direction more than double the number of times, so vibrates more.
I use the DeWalt as I run all DeWalt tools, so batteries is the deciding factor.

The 1.6 refers to degrees as in a sweep. My guess is it is a larger stepper motor.
I own the M18 Batetry Platform...
The new Milwaukee designs includes greater vibration dampening of the motor and oscillating mechanism. My M12 Fuel is very smooth with very little vibration compared to my Dewalt and Makita multi-tools. They all work, but I reach for the Milwaukee the most.
I prefer the dewalt over the milwuakee (multi tool specific) if seems to fit better in my hands and it’s quicker to change/rotate the blade. They definitely both blow the ridgid multitool out of the water! I carry four different brands, to have each specific tool that i like the best. Yes, i have to carry four chargers around, and have extra batteries in each brand, but i have a very custom collection, and in my opinion, i have the best of every tool.
Been running the DeWalt this season as I already had a slew of them. Did get a little sore from the vibration but being able to flip the blade around when working in tight places was a huge time saver. Impressed by the Milwaukee's plunge speed though.
I find having the trigger is a huge plus . Same with a jig saw .. you can release your finger the second you want the blade to stop cutting as opposed to having to reach over and turn the tool off

@@RRBuildings I'm just a weekend diy, but I don't find myself changing blades that often that it's makes it a deal breaker. I've used both, like the feel and power of the Milwaukee better. The quick change is nice, but I pick a blade and end up using it most of the day!
It’s the only dewalt tool I own and I got it for the trigger and the quick change. I wonder if the auto mode would provide the same functionality

Same here I'm mostly milwaukee and i have gen 1 m12 multitool. I used the new (the one in video) DeWalt that my father-in-law has and I had to have it. The multispeed trigger and that amazing quick change mechanism its what sold me. I used to have Milwaukee jigsaw and the hold down sucked ass. I now have Brushless DeWalt jigsaw and their blade holding mechanism is amazing just like this multitool. Thanks for great video!
The dewalt has a lock for the trigger, so you can actually hold it how ever you want, funny how you didnt notice that, in your hand. The variable speed is so much nicer, than having to try and fumble for a speed setting, that breaks over time, like my M12 did.
I had the Milwaukee. Overtime dust gets into the variable speed dial ultimately leaving it stuck in just one position. It's a hassle to clean properly after the finer dust gets in there. The quick change too in the Dewalt, which I now have, is so much better and the plunging is easily off set with slight back and forth motions of your hand to achieve the same results as the Milwaukee.
That's good to know that you just have to do additional steps with the DeWalt to get what the Milwaukee can do automatically
Just returned the 3rd Milwaukee backpack sprayer due to leaking. WTF. So far the Scotts battery powered garden sprayer has been better the Milwuakee. Who have thought.@@LegalAmerican4

This was one of the best hardware reviews I've ever seen. To the point and with usage example.
it was terrible. he deliberately left out multiple features of the products that are decision making features. the guy is clearly a Milwaukee fan boy if you watch his other crap videos. he LOVES his Chinese tools.
I use the DeWalt for trimming fiberglass laminates and find that the low power (light trigger) while plunging; keeps it from marring an area by skipping around, then I can go full power for the cut. Different functionality gets different market share for these tool manufacturers.

As a full time Construction Superintendent with a large company a and life time Hands-on Handyman, I totally agree with you that Milwaukee has a much better set up than Dewalt and many other competitors. However, both are top notch equipment, whatever the tool type. This is why I own both brands just in case🤙🏼😃
My wife hates to see me walk into Home Depot 🤣😂 or shopping online for tools.

Spot on review! Used both tools yesterday at a jobsite, side by side.. Same task and MILWAUKEE wayyyyy out performed the plunge cut.. The vibration in the Milwaukee is almost
non-existent while the DEWALT has an intense amount of hand fatigue as well as a very hot handle after several minutes of use. The Milwaukee blade change is trash on this I will say.. I am a DEWALT user but this one underperformed Milwaukee no doubt. Again excellent review.

ergonomics and quick change feature on the Dewalt is why I went with them for their multitool. I've used it a ton a love it.

Ive got a couple of the Dewalts and I find in wood, they need the blades with bigger teeth(lower TPI) count to cut faster ! And it also has a trigger lock.

I personally use the DeWalt oscillating tool I find the variable speed trigger useful for plunge cutting drywall and different situations I'm no tool expert by any means but I've noticed plunge cutting Hardwoods the looser you hold the tool the faster at cuts just my opinion

Yes the loose grip allows the tool to do the work essentially when you grasp it tightly you loose some of the vibration. The opposite however can be said about cutting material not firmly in place. I often go through and Refasten door casings just above where I intend to cut them because if they have any play in them the cut takes forever
I think it depends on your use case. If you want full control of the cuts and don't plan using the tool for long hours at a time then the Dewalt is probably perfect for that. If you don't need full control of the cuts you make but you need to do long hours using a tool to get the job done and worry about injury due to vibration or RSI's then the Milwaukee would be perfect for that. If your older and suffer chronic hand pain and need to get the job done regardless of how long it will take then Milwaukee. I plan on buying the Milwaukee and put it in the same bag as the Dewalt because that will give me complete control over which one to use for what job. So in short Dewalt is good for precision over power in a short time frame, and the Milwaukee is good for longterm use if you want to avoid injuries over time, plus it has the raw power (lots of it) for all types of jobs that the Dewalt might struggle on. Another way to put it is the Dewalt is a DIY'rs dream tool, and the Milwaukee is a Professional's dream tool. You can use both professionally, but they both have their pros and cons. I rather have both of them so I can choose for myself since its a tool I use a lot.

Nice honest review. You hit the nail on the head when you talked about battery platform. Also that quick change on the dewalt is exactly the same as my corded porter cable. The same as mac and Stanley and crapsman which is all TTI.
Stanley Black+Decker owns the brands Dewalt and Porter-Cable. And Kobalt, Craftsman, and probably others. So Dewalt’s quick release is copied from PC. Darn incestuous. yeah, TTI owns Milwaukee tools, made in China. But all are good tools

The more up to date dewalt has 3 speeds and a trigger lock so you can use both hands. What you didn't mention is the dewalt comes with a 'screw' accessory so that you can use star lock blades too. Nice addition by dewalt tbh.

I’m curious what the backside of the cut looks like. Does it bust through/tear out or does it leave a smooth edge?
Ive been debating on getting an oscillating tool and I’m already stocked up with just about every Milwaukee m12 & m18 tool. I’d be mostly using it to cut out receptacles while finishing the interior of my shop.

I haven’t used the M18 tool but I have used the m12. And it doesn’t have same change and auto feature. But I went from that to the dewalt and I stated buying and changing out all my tools to dewalt just because of how much I love the oscillator. Maybe one day I’ll give the m18 a chance but at this point my wife would kill me haha.
I bought the Milwaukee tool 6 months ago and it works well. I have all Milwaukee batteries so that was the main reason I bought that brand.

many thanks to you for an exceptionally well done demonstration, superb detail illustrating of each tools design features. I am contemplating buying one or the other of these tools at this time. I have to say though, that I learn probably much more from reading all the comments. In this case there is no clear consensus of which tool is better. It is pretty much a matter of personal tastes of each user....compelling arguments for and against a tool come down to subjective valuations and I suppose that will always be the case. For me, I value less vibration, a wider angle of oscillation (which translates to improved cutting) and the reputation of Milwaukee for quality. I have the red machines in impacts, drills, right angle drivers, cordless and corded and so have first hand experience with the quality aspect. I do have some corded DeWalt drills and die grinders, they have been good, have worn a few out in fact, but no problems until then, however the fit and feel of the Dewalts, in use, never matched the pleasure in the performance of the Milwaukee tools.
I work with a ton of Makita loyalists they're indifferent to my Milwaukee impactor and drill but they absolutely love my Milwaukee multi tool.

I've got the Bosch GOP18V-28N and I really like it, and it has a very cool accessory called the "GMFDSG Cut Saw Depth Gauge" that you can set the depth of cut, it really makes things like cutting an access panel into flooring without cutting the subflooring easy to do.
How did we get along without these tools in the past? LOL
Neither Milwaukee nor DeWalt is really available here in Japan.

I have the Metabo model CV18DBLQ5 cordless 18vt oscillating tool and it is similar to the Milwaukee in many features and in design. It is my go-to buzz saw. Low vibration. Like the Milwaukee, the Metabo has the auto feature and it plunges better than my old corded buzz saw, which I will not mention. I have upgraded all my cordless tools to the Metabo HPT line. I came from the old Hatchi line of cordless and corded tools. That is where I started my upgrading.

Unrelated to this specific topic, but...I’ve been looking into the cordless Milwaukee nailer to use with my own barn build and in your review video you used 3.5” ring shank nails and I can’t find those online anywhere. Any help you could offer? Love your videos!

I prefer the on button,most of the time, rather than holding the paddle switch constantly. Helps in awkward spots.
Love the Auto I hated it when I first started using the original m12 but once I adjusted it’s really nice for starting plunge cuts. I was bummed the m12 fuel didn’t have the feature but it’s still a great multi tool stays cooler than Dewalt with much better vibration dampening.
One thing so many people don’t realize and a lot of people may not care but you can save a lot of money by resharpening your oscillating tool blades and it doesn’t even take that long. I don’t do it while I’m on the job site because I don’t have time; I just toss the old one in my bag and put on a new one. But at night when I’m watching TV a lot of times when I’m cleaning my boots or shortening my pocket knife or my chisel I’ll take time to sharpen 10 or 12 of these oscillating tool blades, all it takes is a triangle file and about 60 seconds per blade. Since some of these blades might be three dollars to five dollars each depending on where you buy them it’s worth a minute or two to sharpen them.
I believe the new dewalt version has a three speed selector. I have the original version but I bought my father the updated version for Christmas. Haven’t had a chance to try it out but there is three speeds to choose from.

I’m a Milwaukee guy but I think with how many pros and cons both brands have I’d say they’re pretty equal, just pick one that makes more trade specific tools for you
Dewalt has more of the bigger tools that I need, and Milwaukee has the smaller ones that I need in the 12v line lol. Dewalt seemed to miss the point entirely on what 12v is all about lol.

Pretty much, but since I started with Milwaukee, I feel like I should stick with it. Especially with how expensive batteries can get lol
@@RealHankShill it's the opposite for me. DeWalt's 12v Xtreme drills and drivers are perfect for assembly and installation around the house, while the 18v Multi and Sawzall go to team red due to smoother operation. However that is not true of their circular saws. It would be nice to just go with them to keep the battery line the same, but it seems like Makita saws are more attractive. You can see I place smooth operation pretty high on the list. Simply put, a tool I hate using is one I'm less likely to use.
I just bought the Milwaukee! I was on the fence as I just retired my 13 year old Hilti 14 volt system and burned up my Ridgid corded oscillating tool after 4 years of use. I have made thousands of dollars with those tools! so they have paid for themselves many times over. I looked really hard at the Dewalt system to replace those tools and I was not tied to any battery platforms. I did like the blade changing system and the way the handel felt on the DeWalt! but like you have pointed out you have to continue to hold the trigger in order for it to work and I didn't like that. I do have a full set of Milwaukee packout boxes and a Milwaukee 12 volt drill and impact driver for the small stuff but I needed more power for the heaver jobs. My HD had a deal on the 18 Volt Fuel drill and impact driver kit that came with a free 8.0 Ah Red lithium battery! So I decided to keep it all Milwaukee and bit the bullet and bought the Fuel Oscillating tool and drill driver and impact kit and a packout box to out them in as well as an extended warranty
There is an episode on project farm for oscillating tools. Can't remember if it's the tool or blades though. Worth checking it out. Consistently tested.

I am a dewalt guy. But when it comes to these specific tools, I’ll go with my Fein every time.
The Starlock plus blade change is simply the best compared to all of these, even when I judt bought the M12 Multitool yesterday to go in addition to the Fein.
Why is it better? Seems like either does the same thing. I'm curious.
10 years ago when fein was the only option Porter Cable came out with the quick release for blade change. I use the dewalt now but it's just because I've already invested in the yellow batteries.
I wonder why did the Milwaukee when plunge cutting remind me of the call to prayer...? No surprises on the Milwaukee being a better tool I think from other reviews I've already decided that even without seeing that auto feature which is pretty cool. For me the DeWalt takes it for three reasons and that is the easy change of blades, the body of the DeWalt has the smallest cross-section where you hold it for smaller hands, and I'm already invested in the DeWalt ecosystem. Good review though!
I am on the dewalt battery platform but now you can buy any tool and get a changeable battery device to work with all tools. These devices are from Amazon. I will be getting some red tools in the near future! Great vidio!
Yeah, the battery adapters make the tool platform arguments pretty much moot. You can adapt any major platform battery to any major platform tool.
I like this 2 minute toolsday concept. Please keep it up. I find the comparisons and reviews helpful when making purchases.
I have a DeWalt and a Mikita. Both do the job but just like shown here the Mikita plunge cuts must faster. Using the hook style drywall blades you can cut as fast as you can walk with the Mikita. I have one work van equipped with DeWalt tools the other with Mikita by way of employees choice. Interesting video seeing them head to head.
Ultimately I feel like both of these brands are the best. It really depends on your battery system.
I have the dewalt and really enjoy it. I’ve beat the hell out of it and never seems to wear in the tool itself

The Fuel can also run any style blade due to their locking mechanism. Fella I work with uses a Fein multi tool and star lock blades. I can run anything in mine including the star locks, dewalt can't do that. Is the Milwaukee locking system more cumbersome? Sure but I will deal with that for versatility on a job site
So can the DeWALT. it has quick release as well as a nut for any style blade from any manufacture. Milwaukee you can ONLY use quick release blades. make sure you know what you are talking about before making comments about a product.
I've noticed the harder you push on the dewalt the less it cuts. If you just put a little pressure and let the tool do the work it runs fine. I haven't tried the Milwaukee tho.
I think that’s true of any multitool
Multi tools are kind of funny. I currently have an M12 although that's about to change. I can be pushing and it's not going anywhere. Then for no apparent reason the thing will start ripping through the wood. Very odd I say.
It took Milwaukee a wile to come with a brushless tool. Couldn’t wait for Milwaukee brushless, got the dewalt last year, same with cordless sander.

I’m on the yellow platform but I use the $15 Amazon adapter to use my Dewalt batteries in my M18 multi tool because I got it cheap and it’s just a better tool.

There is an lock button to keep the trigger in on the dewalt 20v max xr. You can still use both hands and place them wherever you want. Unfortunately the only down fall to that is being it trigger has to be all the way in for the lock switch to work
The DeWalt has a trigger lock out to keep it running in any position. I'd take the variable speed trigger ANY day

It’s the tool you never think about till you use it once and then you have to get one because they’re amazing and have so many applications!
