Exactly. It's also ridiculous, everything points to Magic Johnson...the only argument people make is Steph's "impact on the game" with the 3s which mean there's no argument. Magic orchestrates the floor by passing the ball right where it needs to be. Steph orchestrates the floor by moving without the ball and killing defenses with it, making the opposing team think about him constantly on potentially being open, and also thinking that his teammates might get open, as well, because of the gravity he's creating. Both the same idea in terms of creating plays, but just with different trademark styles.

This is a really hard one for me. Based on the definition of a prototypical point guard's duties (floor general, primary ball handler, getting others involved, initiating the offense, etc...), I think Magic Johnson is the greatest "traditional" PG. Regarding Curry, like Stephen A said, his movement without the basketball is unbelievable, and he is a dangerous catch and shoot player. Reggie Miller was similar, but he was a SG not a PG. Steph Curry doesn't fit the definition of a traditional PG. He isn't the primary ball handler on the team and to me he is too offense-oriented to be a true PG. He plays more like a SG. But since basketball has evolved so much over the years, I think we can say Steph is the greatest "modern" PG. So now putting the two players head to head, what do you prefer? Traditional or modern?

Position were made for novices…what matters is the effect the player has on his team ….before kerr ..steph played the traditional point guard role …then turned to an absolute beast and so did the team cause they unlocked what his best asset can do for the whole team…tony allen was a shooting guard but he is known for his defense nobody feared him on offense …curry challenged the old school half court pace and turns out that style cant hang with the new era pace …curry getting penalized when he has won 4 chips for playing off ball is crazy 😂😂😂

Magic brought the flare of passing. Michael changed the game for scoring guards. AI gave everyone the street crossover. Ray Allen and Reggie Miller brought in the lights out shooting mentality. Put it together you have Steph's influences. The NBA changing the rules against hard defense to allow high scoring games is why Steph is so dominant in this era. No hard fouling anymore. Sooo its Magic, because his game was transcendent beyond rule changes and eras.
What Stephen did in that 4th chip run solidified it imo the offensive juggernaut he was averaging 30 through out the whole playoffs i think second in ppg in the year was Jayson averaging almost 28 throughout the playoffs but eventually fell due to lack of experience and fatigue but what curry did in the playoffs that year was unmatched

Steph has been my favorite player since 2013. I even jumped on the “Steph is the best PG ever” bandwagon. But the truth is MAGIC did so much with such a short career. Go look up his heroic performance in the finals as a rookie. I gotta give the nod to magic. Now if Steph gets 5 rings it’s a wrap.

Like that stats in the finals vs Boston was mindboggling. The team had 80-some offensive rating when Curry sat on the bench,, and the mark jumped to close to 120 when Curry was on the floor. Magic don't generate such an impact to his team,, ever! And Curry constantly had such an impact on his team and a casual like you somehow don't call him a PG just bcos somebody else playing point forward role got more apg (not by a wide margin anyway) than him. It’s a tough one. I got magic still at 1. BUT Steph is definitely in the conversation. If Steph gets one there still a conversation but Steph edges. If he finds some way to get 2 more the conversation is dead. The thing that hurt magic was he wasn’t in the league long enough. Steph’s game translates when he gets older. He might be the only player with 4K 3s made and the efficiency he does is crazy. So Steph is in the conversation.
Almost all the final the warriors won, step was not the best player in the team.

This is really hard. But Steph will always create space for all other players on his team. If you made an all time team and picked Steph at your PG then Jordan, Lebron, Kobe or whoever you choose as your wing players will have so much space and isolation opportunities more then if Magic was the PG.

I like to ask people a simple question, if you are building an all time team starting 5, are you picking Magic over Steph for the point guard? And I think there's an obvious choice unless you are biased and that's no disrespect to Magic. That being said, some people argue Bill Russell is the greatest bc of his accolades etc so talking about accolades and career that's an argument, so maybe they rate Bill Russell higher than Shaq based on that but it doesnt mean he's better than Shaq. I still have Steph at 2, in my personal opinion, although Steph is a way better shooter, Magic had the ability to lead an NBA team, his skills on the basketball court were phenomenal and what awards he was able to earn while in the NBA solidified him IN MY OPINION as the best PG. It is clear Magic Johnson is the best due to a combination of his leadership, basketball skills, awards, and his ability to make all of his teammates better players.

Larry Bird had six seasons shooting 3Pointers well over 40% each season. If it wasn't for his terrible back injury, foot spurs etc. and him sticking around too long playing too hurt, his stats would be even better. During his unparalleled 3 year in a row MVP run where the Celts won 2 NBA finals including beating Lakers, Bird was in the 42% range for 3s every year.
Magic had big impact from day 1. The Lakers went from missing the playoffs to championships

@@jaydot4956 Exactly. The Lakers were far from bottom feeders when Earvin got there. What Bird did in turning around that Celtics squad in his rookie year, was honestly far more impressive. Magic was sensational, but he basically turned an already pretty good Laker team with a still established #1 guy, into a bonafide title contender.
I really liked the point Gil made about Magic being a point-forward or something to that effect; the man started at centre when he was required to. Bron is a similar player. The way the game is being played today and the direction it's headed in, PG's are gonna have to have a little bit of everything in their bag. Guys like Dame and Trae are also helping redefine the role.
Steph manages to affect opposition defenses in ways that achieve the same results as more tradition ball-in-hand guys like CP3 do; open up the floor, collapse the lane, ruin matchups, control the tempo of the game, get his guys wide open shots and ultimately get these W's.
It's a more nuanced argument than that, but the point I'm getting at is that a great PG has to do and be more than just a floor general. Steph has just evolved faster than I think a lot of folks were prepared for, and right now, he's the apex predator at his position.
All that being said, it's a lot of combo guards coming up who are creating their own niches, finding different ways to be effective on and off the ball. Nikola, Giannis and Joel are doing the same thing at the other end of the size scale. It's gonna be a time when the position listed next a players name is meaningless, and as a fan of the game, I'm here for all of it.

Won a chip as a rookie, played all 5 positions during that 1st chip when Kareem Abdul Jabbar got hurt, made REAL no-look passes, moved like a locomotive at 6'9" with that size as a point guard, and put together 5 chips dominating the league with Kareem. Magic was SPECIAL.
It really depends on how we are defining “point guard” because that definition has changed. Point guards were not called on to score like they do now. So if your using the new definitions then yes steph is the best but if you are using old definitions it’s magic

For me, Steph has an advantage over Magic when it comes to building your best starting five. Not the best 5 at each position, but starting 5 that would fit their games well with each other. Steph's range is such a cheat code, his game can compliment the best of the best. like MJ would better with Steph than Magic, Lebron would be better with Steph than Magic, etc.

When it comes to PG, I think of CP3, Jason Kidd, magic, and nash. When I think shooting guards I think MJ, Kobe, wade, and yes curry. Draymond is the point guard of the Warriors.
Exactly Curry is a shooting guard, that handles the ball due to his size. If he doesn't score his impact on the game is minimal, whereas Chris Paul or Rondo can dominate a game without putting up huge numbers. He's the greatest small shooter we've seen for sure, but he's in a class of his own. I wouldn't say he's a better facilitator than Chris Paul, and Chris could score almost as well. If I was a GM I'm taking Chris Paul on every team except the Warriors. These conversations are just talking points for lazy news days, but Curry is just a unique shooter and that is how he should be remembered. This BEST argument is getting old, because these folks switch their answers any way the wind is blowing.

Chris Paul can DOMINATE a game with 11 points, Steph cannot. He is just another body without his scoring, no different than Lillard or Iverson, or many of the other smaller shooting guards. That is just a fact. It's no slight on him, but his strength is shooting, Chris Paul is a better point guard because he has no weaknesses and is a st team defender. So no Steph isn't the best point guard ever, he's not even better than Chris Paul.

While Steph isn’t a traditional pass first point guard he excels at being one of 2 greatest off ball movement players ever. Coupled with arguably the best ever gravity with teams consistently paying attention to him which in tow gives others easy buckets off double teams. If unassisted assists were a tracked stat Steph would be the nbas leader in this department.

Magic was a SF parading as a PG. He walked so the likes of LeBron could fly. Sure, he ran all the base stereotypical responsibilities of a PG at a high level, but he also heavily benefitted by being the ONLY 6'9 PG in league history. Steph has a similar impact. He runs the team based on the pure principles of a PG but his approach is one of a kind. He is the extension of the coach on the floor, and makes plays for his teammates to thrive. However, he goes against the stereotypical ideals of being a playmaker. Hes not the guy that pounds the ball most of the clock and is looking to make the immediate pass for a score. He doesn't prioritize getting assists to validate being a playmaker because hes truly unselfish. He's fine with creating opportunities for the NEXT pass to be wide open. He promotes ball movement from the ENTIRE team with his gravity. Thats why the warriors have been one of the leaders in team assists throughout their dynasty. But lets not get it twisted: when you are unequivocally the GREATEST SHOOTER EVER, with the ability to shoot off the catch, off the dribble, and from unprecedented range, you have an impact unlike anyone else in nba history. Sure, he played with KD, but KD came to HIM. (I dont see people diminishing Wade for playing with LeBron, so keep that same energy.) And aside from igoudala, the rest of his core has been homegrown, with a revolving door of talent surrounding them. Yet he still led them to relevance and prominence.
Magic is bigger, won more, easily the best passer ever, and helped save and shape the league going forward. But he's also offensively limited, not a great shooter, subpar defensively for a guy with his physical tools, and left some game on the table due to his "extracurricular activities"
Steph is easily the more offensively gifted talent, an underrated passer and playmaker, honestly about the same defensively as magic without the physical tools to supplement (I'd argue today he's a better defender since he's put on muscle) but he was also a late bloomer with his ankle woes.
Ultimately, Steph is more relatable than Magic, and i think that makes him slightly more impactful. It took almost 2 decades before the next "Magic" could grace the floor (Lebron). But in the past 8 years Steph not only broke the mold on whats acceptable in the league today, but directly influenced the type of talent prevalent in the league and around the world. Look at Trae young, Damian lillard, jordan poole, Luka, etc. And look at different leagues from all age groups. The deluded idea that you think you can shoot like Steph has (for better or worse) changed players approach to the game.
It's a toss up on who the GOAT PG is, but there's only 2 candidates. And depending on your preference, you're not wrong.
But don't diminish the other on faulty principles. They are BOTH non traditional and BOTH anomalies.

Kobe was an time great offensive player & an argument can be made that he was a Top 10-20 defensive player in league history. 9x All NBA Defense 1st Team, 12x overall. That's Top 3 ever next to Duncan & Garnett. Whether he fulfills the role of a traditional pg is irrelevant, because he adds greater value to the team with his scoring and off ball abilities. If Steph acted like an old school pg, he’d just be Chris Paul with the greatest jump shot of all time. Steph is far more than that.
Gotta go with Magic here. He did it all in less seasons as well, having to leave the game in his prime due to HIV (Not gonna count the 32 games he came back for years later, in which he still played at a high level)

Truth be told hes in it now. He has the most unbelievable skill set my eyes have ever seen play the game of basketball which is why he would be my first pick overall for a starting 5 and that team would win because of him.
