He instead looks for every chance to showcase his voice. but yeah I think there are far more interesting singers than who everyone is listing though I DO love some Aretha and Etta and M.J. and even Mariah sometimes. Like what about Donna Summer, Shirley Bassey and Kate Bush? What about Ann Wilson and Cyndi Lauper and Cher? MAHALIA JACKSON?!? I mean Cyndi has a whistle register and matches guitar riffs and has one of the best aged voices I've heard and CHER is the ONLY successful pop alto of all time and made history for having a hit in 6 decades in a row. You hear those women sing and you KNOW it is them.
In 2010, when this article came out, Celine was biggest selling female in entire world, above all these women and most men. She is most skillful vocally still didn't made the list
As an avid Beatles fan for over 20 years, I'd never list John over Paul in terms of singing abilities. Paul had a wider range and used a lot of different techniques, but I guess John is more iconic.
I think one listen to Mariah Carey's entire 90s run will change y'all's mind on her abilities. She's more than just a Christmas artist. Not to mention her huge commercial success? ICONIC.
It's just strange to me how people are underrating her now. Like HOW? Mariah, Whitney and Céline. There's a reason she is in this top three. Her vocals at the height of her career was flawless. They couldn't believe she sang so well when she dropped her first album. That's how good she was.

Sorry but saying Dolly isn’t a technical singer because she doesn’t do vocal runs is just stupid. Her pitch, tone, rhythm, and delivery are impeccable.
I agree..she is not oversang or overdo. She just singing what she suppose to sing rather than making weird face during the whole song just to show off vocal ability.

A travesty George Michael is not on the list - not just great as a solo vocal artist, but his duets with Aretha Franklin, Mary J Blige, and Elton John were standout.
Luther Vandross being number 54 is crazy. You ask any R&B fan who their top 10 singers of all time are, Luther will be number 1 on most of them. Amazing talent.

I remember when they released this list. It was pretty much universally panned. Top music critics and fans in general at the time were like "179 experts? In what, because it's certainly not music!" (I'm paraphrasing of course but some of the placements and overall choices are....questionable at best.)
Dude! I finally when to your music and found this gem " IT'S KILL ME". I notice that you do have a great head voice. This particular song frames it well.
I think the term greatest wasn't necessarily used to describe the best vocal abilities or techniques but the legacy those singers left in the world of music. Also, countdown of 100 greatest singers of all time doesn't necessarily mean ranking them from the least to most important or influential, but merely just naming them in this group. My top five (although very hard to decide) would probably be Whitney Houston, Freddie Mercury, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and Michael Jackson.
Really wish Joel and Jonas would listen to a LOT more stuff from the 1960s and 1970s......even 1980s. Their lack of knowledge for those decades is disappointing. I give August props for knowing MUCH more of those eras.
Asking if Ronnie Spector was Phil Spector's wife was....I mean, yes, she was his wife. And Sofia Coppola was Spike Jonze's wife. It's probably the least interesting thing about her.
Well there is more to singing than octave range and pitch and belting, I know. Shocking. That said this list is weird. but people need to stop grooming the thought that only the vocal trinity matter and that they're the best singers because that is subjective?

@@ramonpadilha9987 Girly, are you dense? The title says " Top 100 Singers of All Time" , it doesn't say " Most technical " While I still don't AGREE with their choices . . . Let's not pretend the " Vocal Trinity " are the best singers. They're great but let's not pretend they're untouchable. 1. Do you think it's a coincidence that all these " Huge technical vocalists " are attractive women? No, they were SELECTED. People with larger ranges and better technique are out there and HAVE been. They're just not marketable. 2. Your measurement of what a good singer is probably limited to vocal technique and range. That stuff helps but if you don't have magic in those vocal chords you just don't have it. Luckily those women have some. 3. If all you care about is vocals then you'd be asking about singers like Dimash, but you're not despite him having better technique and a larger range? Why? Because he doesn't have that magic. 4. Let's not pretend like the Vocal Trinity hasn't been shown up by lesser singers before, ESPECIALLY Whitney.
@Blacksky59 A top singer to me is . . . Someone who understands the assignment. They understand the song and what it is. They're not turning anthems into sad ballads or every opportunity to sing into " Let me do every trick I have " A top singer has a variety of colors and textures, timbers to their voice and can weave them in a way that is interesting and not predictable. A top singer can perform live on a level that is comparable to or better than the studio version. A top singer can do more than just what they're known for and can still find ways to surprise you when you were already impressed with them as a singer.
Annie Lenox is actually a really great singer! You can’t tell from sweet dreams, but listen to walking on broken glass or her performance of under pressure with david bowie. She’s incredible!!!
Re: Bjork Due to her style of singing (intentionally singing notes you do not expect) it is easy to not enjoy her on first listen, but she really grows on you the more you listen. Once you start anticipating the notes it starts sounding amazing. At least that was my experience Also this list is arbitrary AF!
I think there are songs she has that are more accessable to those who are mainstream only listeners. " Hyperballad " and " All is Full of Love " for example or a personal favorite of mine " Bachelorette " ? but I love her. but yeah this list is odd, but I appreciate it's not just regurgitating the same list where we just follow the trend of kissing the vocal trinity's ass and pretending that vocal technique is ALL that matters in making a great singer. Vocal standard based on music theory that was theorized and developed from CLASSICAL MUSIC didn't have a place in Jazz, folk or rock in their birth? Why should we force it to now? Singers who have a range and technique aren't instantly untouchable for me.
@@EmilyAndTheDiamonds13 agreed! even though she's mostly known for her incredible songwriting she still has an amazing voice and is very vocally talented (maybe not to the extent that some singers are, but she still stands out)
Finding out this list came out in 2010 makes a lot of sense because I was like where the hell are some of the modern powerhouses like Adele, Demi Lovato, Ariana Grande, Jennifer Hudson, Cynthia Erivo, etc. If you're basing this purely on vocal talent, they deserve those spots WAY more than many of the people who were included (even if some of the listed people do have legend status).
Also Demi Lovato has left next to no impact on pop culture. Cynthia Erivo is mostly known for her work in theater. Neither of them would be included even if this was made today, and rightly so.
Kind of sad Karen Carpenter was at the 90s-line because she definitely deserves to be on the top in there, somewhere. I've never heard anybody sounding like her after her passing.
@@th5841 you didn't use to have to explore though, the cream rose to the top usually. You used to have to be able to sing. Look at the best songs of each decade - they are mostly still remembered today and many are absolute classics.
I love how these videos show Joel, August and Jonas' personalities in relation to music. Awesome video!! It would be interesting to see how they would rank singers.👍👍👏👏🎵🎵
This list is controversial though 😳 Some of the singers that are in the bottom 90-100 should be higher and some should definitely be at the top of the list, maybe ON the list particularly. And the video was made way back 2019 so that says something. And Mariah Carey should REALLY be higher, because in contrary to what Joel said, she is one of the most influential, iconic female singer of all time.
@@MemoriesLP Beyoncé: Mariah Carey was the person that made me want to sing. as a person growing up in the Detroit area, the first person i said would be on the list is aretha fraknlin, although i didn't know she would be humber one.
My three guesses were Stevie wonder, Whitney Houston and Celine Dion and Celine should've definitely been on the list. It seems like they were not thinking of the best singers of all time but which singers are most iconic but even still, only about half of those singers should've been on the list.
I'll come back to this list to learn more about some artists I liked 😊, although I can't believe they didn't include Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell 🤨

I'm surprised Eric Clapton wasn't on the list. I wonder if Joel listens to him bc he said he liked Steve Winwood's voice, and they sound similar, and also have done a collab.
1. Freddie Mercury 2. Bruce Dickinson 3. Micheal Jackson 4. Elton John 5. Ozzy Ozbourne Here’s my list before watching through the rest, let’s see how accurate I am
Very surprised Bruce and Ozzy weren’t on there, also really surprised at the lack of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Louie Armstrong, Dean Martin, Don McLean, Billy Joel, Serj Tankian, James Hetfield, Ronny James Dio, and Geddy Lee
I hope that Rolling Stones specified, when they published this list, that it was top 100 singers of the 20th century, english speaking (basically American or British, though there are some Irish, I think) and of very specific genres.
I think some of these are not the best singers in terms of technique but they're just iconic...I still would have put more modern singers on that ist like brendon urie, chester bennington or even dimash kudaibergan they all have so many great live performances
The list is from 2010 so those people either didn't exist or were still on the climb up. and while I disagree with this list . . . I think The Rolling Stones know that vocal technique doesn't make you an amazing singer on its own. So I don't think they'd put Dimash. Yeah Dimash has amazing range, great technique . . . but he is a terrible singer. His vocal choices are gaudy and for showing off, often damaging the pieces. He typically sounds like he is doing a UA-cam challenge pingponging through vocal styles . . . often entering areas of his voice that while hit perfectly don't make sense to the piece. They sound terrible beyond just " Oh he hit that, wow amazing. " but is not listenable to beyond the "Wow he sings so high " factor. Same reason they wouldn't likely put Idk . . . Kelly Clarkson. Kelly has an amazing technique and voice but for the most part sounds like elevated karaoke. It almost never sounds like it's her song or something from her.
@@iTeacupPanda oh I didn't know this was from 2010...what I just wanted to say is that they just put the most iconic/successful singers on that list and no "newer" singers who already proved themselves to be one of the best. About dimash: I get that, I don't know that much from him but what I heard was really good...maybe it's like you said I can't tell.
@@cringestuff See I actually commend this list to an extent while I disagree with it because they actually DON'T just put the " most iconic / successful " they put a lot of forgotten singers who were middle of the way and got lost in the decades. Compared to other lists where they literally just put Mariah - Whitney - Celine at the top, toss in Sohyang and Dimash and the rest is an after thought. Because channels and lists CONSTANTLY do that and it's LAZY. It's just one big jack off session to the same handful of singers again and again without any thought or unique perspective. It's just the sheep following the sheep.
I was a bit too motivated to guess along with you so I wrote 6 singers ;D My guesses were Freddie Mercury, Elvis, Bob Marley, John Lennon, Celine Dion and Michael Jackson. Also hi to August and August, hahah ;D
Freddy for me as number one. He is known vocal range extended from bass low F (F2) to soprano high F (F6). He could also get up to tenor high F (F5). Freddy himself didn't realize he had a unique voice box and assumed it was his teeth that helped him. Why he never got his teeth adjusted even though he was self conscious of them.
For me this list is about influence. Maybe not greatest in terms of technical proficiency or popularity but a lot of these people have defined genres and how we consume or enjoy music. So giving credit where credit is due is important. If you like modern artist A then there are a plethora of artists who have paved the way for them that deserve more credit.
Definitely is to some degree. Though that is why it shocks me on the placements and even some people like Kate Bush being left out. Kate Bush is arguably just as influential as The Beatles in her own right. 90% of Indie music at the moment wouldn't exist without how she changed the scene. We wouldn't have Florence + the Machine, Marina & The Diamonds, Bat for Lashes, Lorde, AURORA, Bjork, Tori Amos, Annie Lennox, Billie Eilish , FKA Twigs, Feist, Fiona Apple, Sinead O'Connor, Sarah Mclachlan, St. Vincent, Goldfrapp, Imogen Heap, London Grammar, Rina Sawayama, KIMBRA, etc. I'd also say I'm pretty certain Tears for Fears and Depeche Mode were influenced by her at some points themselves. Like . . . I'm not saying that Kate created these things or was the first to do them but before Kate . . . people weren't putting spoken word or literary references in things that would go or were intended to go mainstream. She really pioneered use of the Fairlight CMI and got people interested in the TECHNOLOGICAL aspect of music and using gadgets. That woman started trends. You didn't hear people using falsetto or headvoice in the late 70's and 80's before her. Not in this type of music. Not in some classical capacity especially You didn't hear people BREAKING the formula of arrangements like she did. MANY of the songs of the 70's and 80's were VERY simplistic.

Paul's voice is gorgeous
John's is just okay
0:09 Mary J. Blige
0:21 Steven Tyler
0:28 Stevie Nicks
0:39 Joe Cocker
0:48 B.B King
I think one listen to Mariah Carey's entire 90s run will change y'all's mind on her abilities. She's more than just a Christmas artist. Not to mention her huge commercial success? ICONIC.
It's just strange to me how people are underrating her now. Like HOW? Mariah, Whitney and Céline. There's a reason she is in this top three. Her vocals at the height of her career was flawless. They couldn't believe she sang so well when she dropped her first album. That's how good she was.
@@greatminds1017 She had what, an 8 octive voice plus whistle capability. I remember when she first hit the scene and everyone was floored by her talent.

Seems like these artists were picked for their legendary status & what they contributed to the direction of music more so than their vocal abilities.
then why is Freddie Mercury at 18!!??
I mean, it is a “greatest” singers list and not a “most talented/skilled” list. I think they were going for legendary or iconic status as opposed to vocal abilities.

Chester🎉
Where is Dolores O'Riordan from the Cranberries, one of the best voices.
She sings so angelic like and uses keening, to represent her Irish culture.
What a shame she isn't on the list.
I was just looking for Elvis and he was #3 it makes me happy😊✨
Sorry but saying Dolly isn’t a technical singer because she doesn’t do vocal runs is just stupid. Her pitch, tone, rhythm, and delivery are impeccable.
Exactly.
@@briannab4037 I was about to comment the same thing: Exactly
I think Joel just doesn’t take country singers seriously, even the good ones. He laughed at most of them when they popped up on this list.
I agree..she is not oversang or overdo. She just singing what she suppose to sing rather than making weird face during the whole song just to show off vocal ability.
@@ivanott7196 Making weird face?
IMO George Michael should absolutely be considered one of the best singers

A travesty George Michael is not on the list - not just great as a solo vocal artist, but his duets with Aretha Franklin, Mary J Blige, and Elton John were standout.
I had Elton John, Phil Collins, and Celine Dion on my list. Two were robbed.
Elton was on the list.
Yes where was Phil Collins?!
I had layne Staley
Luther Vandross being number 54 is crazy. You ask any R&B fan who their top 10 singers of all time are, Luther will be number 1 on most of them. Amazing talent.
9:51 Brian Wilson is an incredibly talented singer! he may be more recognized for his song-writing abilities, but he had perfect-pitch and a beautiful voice. I recommend listening to Surf's Up Solo Version.
yes but Carl is the better singer in the band
There’s an updated version of this list you guys should react to. It’s got more modern singers.

@@serixskylark Thank you. 11 years old MJ could outdo a handful of singers on the list.
My three were Freddie Mercury, Robert Plant, and Ann Wilson (lead singer from Heart). Honestly shocked Wilson wasn't on there.
Some of my favorite vocalists of all time...
Loreena Mckennitt
Floor Jensen
Layne Stanley
Chris Cornell
Eddie Vedder
Cristina Scabbia
Brent Smith of Shinedown also amazing vocalist!!

Completely agree. They need to expand their knowledge.
Seriously. They didn't recognize CCR or The Who? For shame...
Asking if Ronnie Spector was Phil Spector's wife was....I mean, yes, she was his wife. And Sofia Coppola was Spike Jonze's wife. It's probably the least interesting thing about her.

@@ramonpadilha9987 Girly, are you dense?
The title says " Top 100 Singers of All Time" , it doesn't say " Most technical "
While I still don't AGREE with their choices . .
@Blacksky59 A top singer to me is . . .
Someone who understands the assignment. They understand the song and what it is. They're not turning anthems into sad ballads or every opportunity to sing into " Let me do every trick I have "
A top singer has a variety of colors and textures, timbers to their voice and can weave them in a way that is interesting and not predictable.
Yes she’s incredible! My favorite is Shining Light.
Yes, love Annie Lennox! Also the lack of Deloris from The Cranberries is shocking. She had such a unique voice!
Yeah, that clip of her definitely did her dirty lol
IIRC, she's classically trained in opera too.
Sweet Dreams glorifies drug abuse. I wouldn't put that song on Top 5 million.
So many icons (including Jonas)
My faves are Stevie Wonder, Prince, MJ, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and Aretha Franklin
Re: Bjork Due to her style of singing (intentionally singing notes you do not expect) it is easy to not enjoy her on first listen, but she really grows on you the more you listen. Once you start anticipating the notes it starts sounding amazing. At least that was my experience
Also this list is arbitrary AF!
Bjork is my favorite Female singer, but she does have some horrible songs. :P
@@SveinJohnnyFedje When you're playing with bending the laws of music the way she does you're definitely bound to have some bad ones. It's a given.
Ye, Bjork is an acquired taste for sure.
As a 46 year old watching this feels like seeing those mega compilation commercials back in the 80s and 90s.
How the heck are Mariah and Steve Perry so low? They're iconic voices.
Roy Orbison was an amazing singer. He had a four octave range.
The clips they picked for him were pretty bad. His performance on "In Dreams" and "Crying" are where his virtuosity becomes apparent.
I very much hope people will loose this "octave range" thinking. Singing is NOT just about range.
Ye, his voice was almost operatic at times. One of the top five best technical singers on my list for sure.
Taylor has an OK voice. She's more of a songwriter. These are her own words.
Yeah, I was thinking this too. Her songwriting is where she really shines.
Talented, and her voice is getting better too
Her vocals are insane aswell! You can really see it when she performs live on tour ❤
@@EmilyAndTheDiamonds13 agreed! even though she's mostly known for her incredible songwriting she still has an amazing voice and is very vocally talented (maybe not to the extent that some singers are, but she still stands out)
@@EmilyAndTheDiamonds13 stop lying she's got so many horrible live performances and her songs aren't even hard to sing to begin with
It seems the singers picked are the iconic voices of their time and genres.
Steve Winwood, Lou Reed, Morissey, Marvin Gaye, Freddie Mercury and MJ would be my choices from their take of 100.
But still. How about Ella Fitzgerald? Frank Sinatra?
It came out in 2008.
She is definitely an aural gift. This list was wack.
Yeah that is sad and even more sad was how they didn’t even say anything about her.

*Rolling Stone's lists were always weird in terms of positions in the ranks.*

I’ve never trusted Rolling Stone when it comes to music as they mostly just focus on the sales and numbers rather than how good the music actually is.
I played as well and guessed Robert Plant, Michael Jackson and Freddie Mercury. Probably the safest options but whatever.
I love how these videos show Joel, August and Jonas' personalities in relation to music. Awesome video!! It would be interesting to see how they would rank singers.👍👍👏👏🎵🎵
How the hell was Freddie Mercury not top 10 on this list?
This list is controversial though 😳 Some of the singers that are in the bottom 90-100 should be higher and some should definitely be at the top of the list, maybe ON the list particularly. And the video was made way back 2019 so that says something.
And Mariah Carey should REALLY be higher, because in contrary to what Joel said, she is one of the most influential, iconic female singer of all time.

The weeknd also
Dimash who doesn't have his own songs

I’m very surprised that Jimi Hendrix was not on the list
The Rolling Stones magazine lists are often weird. Like BuzzFeed of a generation past. 🤣
How in the blue hell is Michael Stipe not on this list? R.E.M has one of the most distinctive sounds ever.
