I'm right there with you!! This is my favorite. Grace Under Pressure was not my favorite, but Neil's lyrics, his drumming, and Alex's guitar setup on this song are awesome. I remember Alex saying at the time he thought he finally got the sound he'd been pursuing for years. Unfortunately they didn't include in their setlist much after the 80's.
you guys always make me smile, cause I remember that same jubilation when I heard these songs for the first time. It has been the music of my life for forty years
Great reaction! My favorite so far and I've been through a bunch of yours. Grace Under Pressure is a very underrated album, but it captures a unique new wave'ish boldness we don't see in other Rush production. A very transitional sound trying to balance back the synths with the rock trio. Tidbit: towards the end, in the last 2 or 3 bars, Neil modifies the pattern with a reference to the previous song, The Body Electric
Perfect example of Alex playing Rhythm AND lead simultaneously and making it sound better than two players. And what are those sounds during the solo? Have you ever heard of guitar? Make a sound like that before? Not very often. Genius.
This is the type of Rush song that needs a reaction. This was one of Alex’s top 3 solos. The other 2 were Limelight and Analog Kid. Check Totem when you get a chance.
Alex: That song is from our Grace Under Pressure album ... This was the last solo I did, a real difficult piece, and it was composed totally in the studio. The solo section starts with that one held note, and I kept thinking, "Okay, what the hell am I going to do?" ... It was a real challenge. I spent a long time on that and was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Again, it was one of those situations where you go crazy-just do something. Each section of the solo led into the next; it ended up working quite well ... It's like it knew what it wanted to be and I just had to allow myself to follow. We ended up co-producing the Grace Under Pressure album with Peter Henderson. So we were working a lot more on that record. We were in the studio for months during a very cold, snowy winter in Quebec; it's a mystery to me why it took so long. We were so prepared and had twice as long as usual to write, rehearse, arrange, and refine the material. We were so confident that we thought it would take us five days. It wasn't like we were bogged down or held up against the wall in the studio; it just took a while to get the sounds ... But in the end, there’s something about the sound and the power and the quality of the songwriting that really strikes me. I really love that record ... I even played some keyboards. I thought it was a really important and unique part of what Rush was becoming.
I saw Rush in 1979 for the hemispheres tour and fell in love for decades. The energy, emotion in Alex’s playing made every solo an event. When albums came out we were always excited to hear what he was going to do. This tour was amazing. I’ve seen them about 38 times. I lost count, but in in the early years I was seeing them three and four times per tour. Alex is the most unique guitarist on earth. It almost like he’s being funny when he plays. He makes the guitar laugh and scream, and squelch. #1 rock guitarist of all time.
People praise La Villa for its solos. I argue that THIS is one of Alex's best ever. He can shred and do everything that all the heavy hitters can do, BUT Alex can also write one hell of a song that sounds good on top of that.
I think it's one of his best too, always puts a smile on my face. Alex said a few times that it was his second favourite (after Limelight). Apparently the solo has a plot, some sort of story that he imagines when he plays it. I would love to know what that is - and also why this awesome song only got played for the second half of one tour!
@jo77866 on the Shred with Swifty podcast (youtube it, it's awesome) Alex describes that solo. In another interview, he described that solo: "it’s got a hip, kind of slinky attitude, a little goofy humour,” Rush rules!!
Because of the utterly LUDICROUS backlash there is about this period, 'cOz kEyBoArDs!', a stunning work of art like this song somehow remains underrated and underappreciated, even by Rush 'fans'. It's just so ridiculous.
I never really liked the GUP album and still don't but this track and The Body Electric were two great songs from the first listen to this day. Kid Gloves is one of my all time favorite Rush tunes.
I never noticed this before, probably because I have not listened to this song in many years, but that solo is very "Power Windows" esque. There's almost always a song, or maybe a solo, or something on each album which gives a hint of the next album's overall sound. And the fact that this was the last solo created for this album reinforces that.
Absolutely love that people are choosing Rush songs out the box for y'all to react to. Several other Rush songs like this. I love every song on GUP. "Enemy Within" is my favorite on GUP. I hope you react to these songs. "Half the World" on Vapor Trails album. "Chain Lightning" and "War Paint" on the Pesto Album. ""Prime Mover" and Turn the Page" on "Hold your Fire album. Thank you, I'm Loving your Rush reaction journey. 🤗✌
After 'Moving Pictures' and 'Signals' came 'Grace Under Pressure'....Their first album not produced by Terry Brown, and many fly by night fans (bad pun intended) dropped off...But G.U.P. is a rewarding listen, and Kid Gloves is a great song from this album...'Between The Wheels' is personally my fav and worth a listen if you haven't already (apologies if you have, soz, I haven't checked)
The entire Grace Under Pressure album was really good. I listened to that album again and again and again. I didn't stop listening to it until I couldn't play the album anymore. The whole time complaining that the weren't like the old Rush anymore. I didn't know it at the time, but I was becoming just as addicted to the new sound as I was the old. Later in their career when they started sliding back to the old, old sound, I found myself complaining that they didn't sound like the old 90's Rush. You just can't please everyone. Rush was truly a legendary band no matter what they played throughout their career; I couldn't get enough of them.
This song was thrown together at the last minute. They needed one more track of a certain length (I think they called it project 3:57) to make the 2 sides of the album equal length (or for the cassette tape, as this was before CD technology. If ai recall, Lifeson came up with it and did a demo, which he played for the other two in Neil's driveway? Not entirely sure, but something along these lines. But it was not written before going into the studio with the others. It was an afterthought. But a great track, mostly in 5-4 time. Who else writes pop songs in odd time signatures? Though Salisbury Hill (Peter Gabriel) is in 7-4, and very cool.
😂Alex AND “The Boys” REALLY started to make the music and the lyrics really hit the spot mood wise in unison around this time, and continued getting better and better with every release forward until the end.🤘🖖✌️🎸🎹🥁🎤🥇🇨🇦🎼
One underrated songs of Rush is Kid Gloves. As always their just bringing down the house. Geddy ripping on the bass, Neal giving another drumming lesson (lyrics poetry)and Alex just destroying it on guitar.
freakin loved that so much. alpha tier and super unique. have I been living under a rock all these years? I'll leave you with a request. You have to react to October Ends ' new song, it's mind-blowing!
This song, to me, is a perfect choice to revisit for any RUSH fan that didn't get it after the first listens. So many RUSH fans don't listen after Signals and it's a shame. I suggest you don't like it? Put it down and go back. You'll be a different person listening with different ears. Guaranteed 🤘🏼💯
I had the honor to see RUSH 12 or 13 times live. Always amazing. To the point of I was in 3 different RUSH tribute bands. Exhausting but a ton of fun!! Glad you are enjoying it!
Another great reaction!! This is probably my "low-key " favorite album...and this being one of my favorite songs. Between The Wheels and Afterimage are two more awesome songs. For a change of pace(and a slight hint to the band's direction), you should check out Red Lenses. It's was very different from what they'd done before. Check it out...see what you think.
This album was released after the signals album where the guitar really took a back seat to the keyboard. Grace under pressure was kind of an apology to Alex from Geddy and Neil and let him be more up front on this album. Great move I’d say!
I love your reaction guys! I’ve been such a huge fan of this band for many decades. This song is an obscure one. Keep digging deep in the catalog. There is so much more to do! Try going back to the beginning and work your way forward. Try Bastille Day or Best I Can.
It’s funny. Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows and Signals is the period where older hard rock and progressive fans dropped off. Keyboards were so much part of pop and new wave, that rockers were turned off, in the same way classic rockers were turned off by diso in the 70’s. Rush were an anomaly. They could take any style of music and incorporate into their sound and if you really bothered to listen, it was still Rush. It was still progressive. It was still three amazing musicians. It was still people who believed in the craft and did their thing. Yep! That’s Rush!
It's refreshing to see people reacting to a different era of Russia's music, don't get me wrong I love the early stuff too but they went on to do so much other interesting material and it doesn't really seem to get covered as often. Plus you guys are absolutely Charming so bonus.

Guys, I'm not sure this song, Kid Gloves, completely expresses the GRIND the band was going through at this time. If you haven't heard it already, you should listen to "Between the Wheels", from the same album, next. That song is what I call "Dark Glory". It's metal, industrial, progressive, alternative, new wave, and a whole lot of getting their YA-YA's out! It will melt you. // ** Oh, you DID do the live version! OK...well, you should do the studio version too. The guitar lead that Alex lays down on the album is so perfect. The song is so good from the studio recording that it bares repeating! :)
I adore your Rush reactions and re-watched each one several times. You seem stuck on mid-80's Rush, which is ok, because it's good - well maybe average for Rush. I am anxiously awaiting you guys to hit early '70s Rush or mid-'90s Rush or even 2010's Rush. You guys are maybe 1/9th or so through the catalog and have so much great Rush to discover. If I had CashApp I would have requested by now. Any other ways to request?
He used a lot of reggae chord structures on that entire album which really gave it different feel over all the other albums. Also there's 4 official videos of tunes from that album.
I will die saying this could have been their biggest hit ever.
I'm right there with you!! This is my favorite. Grace Under Pressure was not my favorite, but Neil's lyrics, his drumming, and Alex's guitar setup on this song are awesome. the guitar tone and solos on GuP are so emotional and full...goosebumps!!1
Perfect example of Alex playing Rhythm AND lead simultaneously and making it sound better than two players. And what are those sounds during the solo? Have you ever heard of guitar? Make a sound like that before? Not very often. Genius.
harmonics, innit. but yes, the solo is the off the wall, and still manages to be melodic as fuck.
How can you not love Alex?
That's Alex.
Alex is the most underrated rock guitarist ever
Truth
Alex, Geddy and Neil ❤ The heart, the mind and the soul. Rush has been the anthem of my life for 40 + years ❤
This is the type of Rush song that needs a reaction. This was one of Alex’s top 3 solos. The other 2 were Limelight and Analog Kid. Check Totem when you get a chance.
Totem
Yes!!
Music is the great de-tox. I can get so emotional about Rush too. Great reaction, thank you!

Thank you Mr Lifeson for your behind the scenes information!!🙏🙏🙏 I’ve always loved this song and album since I first heard it
Rush were definitely on a different level throughout their career.

I agree! My favorite Alex Lifeson solo! I think this solo perfectly captures Alex's zaniness, silliness, and comicality perfectly. Rush rules!!
His best solos are on this album imo and yes he kills it on this one.
So true, Alex can do so much than just shred.
I think it's one of his best too, always puts a smile on my face. Alex said a few times that it was his second favourite (after Limelight). Grace from what I understand nearly tore the band apart and Power Windows is a reaction to that. Take it for what it’s worth.
This is one of my favorite solos from Alex, it’s a fun song to play on drums as well, 5/4 time.😂🤘🏻🔥
Loved this song since the album came out. Alex’ guitar tone is just incredible.
Totally, that is one of my favorite solo's by him, it was perfect!
It's such an earworm song, but a great one to have, the guitar Solo is killer.
Grace under pressure is an amazing album.

Love that you react to the studio versions- you get to hear everything and how Rush intended it to be heard!
After moving from AZ. My first concert in CA was Grace under Pressure. I wore the album and cassette outs
😂Alex AND “The Boys” REALLY started to make the music and the lyrics really hit the spot mood wise in unison around this time, and continued getting better and better with every release forward until the end.🤘🖖✌️🎸🎹🥁🎤🥇🇨🇦🎼
Ttheir song is a perfect example of how metal can unleash a whirlwind of energy.
My first ever Rush concert. I saw them at Radio City Music Hall NYC, great show, awesome album!

Alex was up on stage WITH TOOL last night for Jambi, with A Passage to Bangkok solo/ breakdown in the middle. It's posted on YT now.
whuuuuut? wow awesome thanks! I was listening to Tool on my way home tonight and Rush is my fav band.
Love it! More Rush please…
This is a really great, fun, often overlooked song. I've always enjoyed it a lot. Glad you loved it too.

I wore my Grace Under Pressure T-Shirt out pretty quickly after the concert... it was hard to take off.
I love when you rewind.. I do it also.. great song!!
I always say this because it is true: no band comes out of the break better than Rush. They build energy and pump you up after.
This album was released after the signals album where the guitar really took a back seat to the keyboard. Grace under pressure was kind of an apology to Alex from Geddy and Neil and let him be more up front on this album. Great move I’d say!

Sitting in the cafeteria in high school when this came over the speaker! I hauled hay in the 95 deg heat to get enough cash to buy this album
One of the best songs ever!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ve always thought that this is Alex’s best solo!
You pups are discovering what we’ve known since the ‘70’s
It’s funny. Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows and Signals is the period where older hard rock and progressive fans dropped off. Keyboards were so much part of pop and new wave, that rockers were turned off, in the same way classic rockers were turned off by diso in the 70’s.

GUP is such a unique Album...in the top 3 of my favs for sure
🎸 🐐
A world of difference
A world so out of touch
Overwhelmed by everything
But wanting more so much -
Call it blind frustration
Call it blind man’s bluff
Call each other names -
Your voices rude - your voices rough
Then you learn the lesson
That it’s cool to be so tough
Handle with kid gloves
Handle with kid gloves
Then you learn the lessons
Taught in school won’t be enough
Put on your kid gloves
Put on your kid gloves
Then you learn the lesson
That it’s cool to be so tough
A world of indifference
Heads and hearts too full
Careless of the consequence
Of constant push and pull
Anger got bare knuckles
Anger play the fool
Anger wear a crown of thorns
Reverse the golden rule
Then you learn the lesson
That it’s tough to be so cool
Handle with kid gloves
Handle with kid gloves
Then you learn the weapons
And the ways of hard-knock school
Put on your kid gloves
Put on your kid gloves
Then you learn the lesson
That it’s tough to be so cool
the synth at the end of the song are Geddys foot pedal synthesizers
New NE oblivascaris out.. I loved your original reaction to them! EQUUS! Live! You're the best D!
Definitely one of the highlights of the album. Too bad it's not played during hockey games.
Haven't heard this in awhile. Good stuff.
Alex is the reason I still use a Floyd equipped guitar and chorus/delay pedals.
I love this song. The whole album is amazing❤

They reacted to a live version of Between the Wheels a while back.
@@Newworldman66 yeah, I found that out and updated my post. I want them to do the studio version.
Any song written in 5/5 is Alex’s playground!!

“It’s like Eddie Van Halen”
Just years before Eddie ..
You will never go wrong with a RUSH reaction. If you keep doing Rush reations let people know ahaead of time you will get more views good-job!🇨🇦
I love that the timing starts out in 5/4, 5 beats/5 fingers/ glove....😅
Follow up with Analog Kid, thank me later.
Yes. It's my ringtone
Yes, an old fav.
He used a lot of reggae chord structures on that entire album which really gave it different feel over all the other albums. Also there's 4 official videos of tunes from that album.
I love rush
This song is in the pocket from the jump.
I think Big Money from Power Windows will blow
off your heads. Just the studio version…
Neil was such a prolific writer. The lyrics are clear, but still allow for a level of personal interpretation. Alex is obviously an alien. 😉
He took this solo from a nothing bottom depths to the heights
The song is great, but I came for the guitar solo.
Killer!!!
For the record: Alex was doing this shit before Eddie was doing his shit.
How about the next track on this album Red lenses , very different but awesome melody
I’m telling you guys have react to “the Necromancer “ …..it will blow you away…nothing quite like in Rush vast catalogue
Alex & Geddy For '24.
HOW YOU LIKE THAT LIVE CONCERT ENDING!?!?!
Eddie Van Halen Shit? Yeah but with more creativity.
I remember this song. I skipped it every time.
I did too…….for decades. Then it grew on me……
@@geoffreywestphal5629 it’s worse for me
Tai Shan is my only sure-fire skip on any Rush album, although The Larger Bowl is almost equally skip-worthy.
@@SnowDogisVictorious you don’t like Tai Chan because Geddy gave you permission not to like it.
🤡
I miss my friends.
Great guitar work on this song but I have never liked the way the lyrics fit.
Wouldn't be in my top 20 Rush songs.
