Bought mine 6 years ago as a patrol pack. Abused the hell out of it here and overseas and carried up to 60 pounds of all kinds of equipment with no issues. Now it serves as my get home bag. Plus mystery ranch's customer service has always been on point.

Lots of guys in here complaining about this price. Listen fellas, these bags were made for operators and grunts. Of course you aren't expected to buy a 400 dollar bag to larp in your back yard. I used this bag for years in a recon platoon and its the best bag I've ever had, better than issue bags. Had mine for going on 7 years now and used it on 3 continents. Its good stuff and Mystery Ranch is one of the best companies out there. Go buy some 5.11 and shut up, nobody is forcing you to buy this.

Great review on this pack. I’ve carried one for 10+ years now. A couple of notes:
1.) I strap my rifle to the front of the pack with the compression straps. Makes a great whitetail pack because it is small enough to take in the tree, but you can pop out the waist belt and carry your rifle and a full pack with ease. The more you load it, the better it carries.
2.) Makes an awesome carry-on for air travel. Carries very well through airports, very easy to rip open and get your stuff out for security check, the top pockets are big enough for keys, wallet, sunglasses, cell phone, tickets, etc. Side pockets are good for a water bottle or soda. Plus, it fits under the seat in front of you and if you need anything you can just rip the top lid open, without having to unzip the whole pack.
3.) Nothing carries better than a Mystery Ranch pack. Nothing. Once this pack is broken in and adjusted properly, everything else will feel weird and cheap, especially with a full load.
I really hate that MR moved production of everything but military packs overseas. If you handle and carry one of these and then one of the foreign made packs, the difference is obvious.

I bought one of his packs in 1997 for $300.00 . That’s 22 years ago, an I’m still using it ! Over 2500 miles of hiking with it ! I also bought a new one last year just to get some of the newer updates, that one was only $275.00 . I’ve been looking at this model for a sometime now, and after seeing this review, I’ll be buying this one ! There’s not a lot of reviews on this pack , or any of the MR packs . Thanks Sensible Prepper ! Looking forward to to load out video on this.

Great to see you reviewing this iconic pack, Sootch. I've had a handful of Mystery Ranch packs (Komodo Dragon, Urban Assault, Ravine). They are superb packs for military applications, and their hunting line is also great - but too heavy for backpacking or serious hiking (by serious hiking, I mean long day hikes with significant elevation gain). As you suggested, it would make a good civilian emergency bag because in all likelihood it won't be used often, if ever. My emergency bag that stays in my car year round is made from 1000D fabric - and that's not a concern because I'm not going to be hiking with it. The 3DAP still gets a 10 out of 10 when it comes to cool factor. The tri-zip design is really functional and they are built incredibly well. Having said that, as much as I love these bags, you couldn't pay me to carry one on my back in the mountains. My current pack for multi-day backpacking trips is 58 liters and weighs 2 pounds 11 ounces. The Mystery Ranch 3DAP is half the size and weighs a whopping 4 pounds 9 ounces. Mystery Ranch has a backpacking line, but even those packs are overbuilt. With the emphasis on lighter gear these days, maybe they'll come out with a large pack that's a lot lighter - but backpacking just isn't their bread and butter (even though Dana Gleason came from that world).

    • @SensiblePrepper
      @SensiblePrepper  4 роки тому

Thanks Sly, Yeah, there are a lot of ultra lite Hiker packs out there. I like the rugged design of the MR 3DAP for Emergency situations where durability is a priority. If I was just hiking, I'd go with an Osprey.

Sir, I appreciate your quality videos. I've never been much of a gun guy, but your presentations are always rational, and interesting. I just received my 3DAY Assault CL, which is a bit more of an urban version (laptop storage) but it's an awesome bag. I'm setting mine up as my EDC/emergency bag. I carry a pretty serious first aid/ trauma kit, tools, a thick jacket, bug out stuff and there's still plenty of room for my camera, a tripod and several days worth of food. I use the MOLLE feature so my capacity is really increased. I can carry my old-time banjo! I've no doubt that there's still plenty of room for a sidearm. My only complaint is that being a rather tall person with a long torso, I haven't quite figured out how to use the adjustment feature, but youtube is great, and I'll find something that can help. Can't wait to get out into the woods. Have a great weekend!

Welcome to Montana Sootch ! To all the naysayers complaining about the price ....I agree, the price of Mystery Ranch packs has definitely creeped up there. But, you've got to understand the design, materials, quality, and pedigree. There are lighter packs, less expensive packs, and packs with less durable fabrics. The 3 day Assault is made in the USA to exceed mil-spec. Mystery Ranch makes many packs for different uses in a variety of price ranges. Hard to describe in a post or video. You really need to handle the packs to feel the quality and appreciate the workmanship and design. The packs made here in Bozeman, MT are well worth the money when you realize the dedicated real life people who are making the packs.

Mystery Ranch's best claim to fame is its suspension system that it uses on the packs. That alone is worth a premium, especially if you've experienced it. One thing that I think you missed in the evaluation was that the pack comes in three sizes; so in addition to the adjustable suspension, the length of the pack can be tailored to your height, something that most other "tactical" packs don't offer.
As much as I like it, there are some downsides I see to this pack. First, from a technical design standpoint, it's kind of plain and something I'd expect ten or fifteen years ago, not what I'd expect on the cusp of 2020. The lack of organizational pockets is to me, a strike. Second, while it has the capacity for hydration bladders, there isn't a dedicated hole for the tube. Yes, I know that the one zipper can be used for that purpose, but I prefer something that's a little more watertight than that. Then, placing 3l bladders on the outside wings? That worries me when all that's there to hold it together is a zipper...I would feel better if they added at least one more belt, preferable two, in case the zipper goes KIA in the field.
Beyond that, it's a good piece of kit with the strongest selling points being the suspension/harness and sizing.

$400 you could get a complete Molle system (the big main pack with frame, 2 pouches, as well as the patrol pack with another 2 sustainment pouches and anything else you want to add, like a medic pouch) and it’s going to last a lifetime as well. For like $150 depending on how good you are with finding deals.
There’s also the CFP-90 pack system that has a smaller pack add-on that’s very roomy and people have hauled these babies around for years. That system runs about $100-$150? And it’s massive. Plus there’s forums on modding it if you do so choose. And then the rest of the money add a poly pro set and some Korean wool pants and military boots and your gold for winter. Under $400! (Like $250 total?)
I just can’t justify $400 on a single pack, especially when we’ve been discussing homeless tips on this channel... D: 😫

How would you recommend attaching a tent or isomat to the bottom of the pack? I'm used to military issued packs with clips on the bottom to secure an item but with empty webbing the only thing I can think of is to run some paracord through it and tie it around the tent or mat. Do you know of any products to better secure stuff there?

@@SensiblePrepper Sure will be. Going to be a a tough game. Our defense will be the difference this year although the resolve of Trevor and Travis to do "whatever it takes". The QB run and the passes to Travis out of the backfield are what helps us us on offense. LSU has not gone against a defense as good as ours and our defensive backfield. Isiah Simmons is the most talented defensive player I have seen in years. He can literally play every position on the field and excels in all of them. His weakest spot would be as a defensive tackle, but he has the speed of Travis and the size of a defensive end. I wish they would allow him a chance to play some offense as a TE and also to carry the ball in our Heavy Package on goal line/short yardage. Isiah and Tanner had the speed to run down Ohio State's running back. Our defense played great in the second half and so did our offense. It's going to take 4 quarters of perfection on both sides of the ball to compete with LSU but I know we can do it! Go Tigers 🐅 🐾!!!

The best bag is the bag you know you can grab it and leave quick and not be heavy, and make you mobile and have what you need to go to the LZ.

I mean where does one begin!? drug users & secluded places & criminals in general among quite many other things to be aware of. one that I would do is try to have the most basic but most effective items that I would start with and then build on that as to what I would absolutely need and try to keep it as lightweight as possible also they've got those back sacks they're large enough to hold a tire also like a solar flashlight and solar this and that and the other thing. I want to look up if you were to injure your knee or something if there's some way to tourniquet that situation you would certainly want like a flares, cb radio it also always let others know where you're going to be and when you expect to be back and so on if you were to injure your knee example if you had just enough to write materials you could come up with something that would enable you to keep going on Fwd there's plenty that can be done hand crafted. Also here most recently I thought about continually revised in your survival bags Etc as well as holding regular survivalist meetings and it feels you can also barter your survivalist items and gear depending on the need as you go along to do so

@@Leviathan7.62 Thanks for the explanation. I am in pain management and it baffles me to how many don't get it. Let's just say that should anyone actually experience any pathology in the lower lumbar spine that truly alters their quality of life/function, they would be willing to save their pennies for the best possible choice regarding a pack. Is $400 steep, yep, but one can't put a price on comfort, especially when he/she is dealing w/this issue. I don't own a MR, but I do own other quality packs such as Sabra gear and other cheap packs,IMHO, just don't stack up regarding higher end quality and comfort. If one gets a great deal on cheaper pack that works for them, great and all the power to them. Again, thanks for your post. Happy New Year as well.
